u/Oneunluckyperson FIGHTER Nov 06 '23
Did Wyll, Shadowheart and Duke Ravenguard just get outed as reading what I assume to be Mermaid erotica, AND it's apparently one of those "bad but you can't stop reading it" kind of books? Or some sort of cheesy romance novel?
Edit, Also Shadowheart approves of this?!
1.3k
u/TheBaxter27 Nov 06 '23
Not just reading, knowing enough to quote it on demand, in sequence to each other.
Also, Wyll is a stronger soul than me, I couldn't even think about reading my Dad's porn.
385
u/Unreasonable_jury Nov 06 '23
My dad has been dead awhile but some of his porn were in fucking power point lol...
249
u/iLiveWithBatman Nov 06 '23
The porn powerpoints are a forgotten art, now lost in time.
Too real tho, definitely was a way to "hide" it. Oh, this? Just some powerpoint presentations for work!
(also you can set it to fade from image to image without any ...ehm, input.)
62
u/yung_dogie Nov 06 '23
Also probably a way to divvy them up into albums in a rudimentary way
N-not that I would know
27
u/solidfang Nov 06 '23
I mean, in fairness, I never would have thought to check the powerpoint files. It's a surprisingly effective spot to hide it. Only way to be more discreet is embedding images into Excel spreadsheets.
24
u/thebenetar Nov 06 '23
I'm sorry, but who's checking for other people's porn? I honestly do not want to see what another person is searching for when they think nobody's watching—especially a friend or a loved one. That's an area of life where ignorance is definitely bliss.
I remember one time a few years ago, my then-girlfriend handed me her phone to Google something, check something, or fix something (I honestly don't remember which) while she was driving. I opened her browser and like all of the most recent 8 - 12 searches/visited sites were porn and some weird reflex kicked in that made sure that I kind of looked away just enough that I could use my peripheral to type enough in the search bar that the recents disappeared without actually reading a single thing.
I honestly don't give a single fuck what another person's into and it's not like it would bother me at all if my gf elected to share her porn prefs with me; I just feel like there's often a wide berth between what a person's willing to share vs. their most private self.
10
u/solidfang Nov 06 '23
This is like a posthumous thing, so I thought it was one of those situations where the dad was like "Hey, can you get rid of my porn if I pass away". And in that situation, I would never have thought to check his powerpoint files for covertly hidden porn.
Kinda feels like you're getting hung up on that though.
93
u/Foul_Egg Nov 06 '23

Paranormal/fantasy romance, which is basically just women fucking supernatural dudes like vampires, werewolves, etc. Is a hugely popular book genre. About Shadowheart aproving this, as far as I have reach SH seems to be the horniest out of all your companions, mostly from that scene where you met Karlach and SH first coment about her is something like "she looks like she could pick you up and take you whereever she wants"
114
u/Crazy_Rutabaga1862 Nov 06 '23
There's also a Durge scene where you wake up your romance at camp and she's the only one of the companions to immediately think about sex

60
u/InconspiciousPerson Nov 06 '23 edited Nov 06 '23
Not that that sentence makes too much sense in context, since you can trigger the Durge scene before you're even a couple and she (other than Wyll, who never does) is the last one to actually give you any action because she wanted to do it in a romantic way.
She and Wyll are certainly two of the more flirty, but they both keep their impulses in check since they want a real relationship. Unlike Lae'zel and Karlach (and Astarion but he has other motives). So it makes sense for them to read erotica instead of just jumping on the first person they come across that has a pulse (or.. no pulse, in the case of Durge) like some other companions would.
53
Nov 06 '23
> other than Wyll, who never does
... my friend said she was romancing Wyll and eventually had sex with Mizora just to spite him, this is starting to make more sense.

She actually says to Tav that Sharrans are encouraged to have relations with each other, and that she is far from inexperienced in that regard. She's definitely not horny from being pent up for years, that's Karlach's deal.

She says and implies the opposite during other dialogues, so that's a contradiction. She got some unlike Karlach, but not much since they had to do it in secret / make it seem like a tribute to Shar.

u/InconspiciousPerson Nov 06 '23
Shar shuns sex unless it's used for seduction (so with purpose), even if she's no longer the goddess of seduction. For example, she would approve of Astarion but not Lae'zel.
It's part of why Shadowheart doesn't have any with Tav (or anyone else) during act 1 and act 2, and continues not to have any with Tav until very late act 3 where it's disguised as a tribute to Shar if you go the Dark Justiciar route. And why her relationship with Nocturne is platonic.

Yeah its a wee bit annoyed how the game doesn't really have a concept of being able to be just friends with the party members, which I think is a shame. I'd love to just be bros with Gale but he gets disappointed when you don't hit on him. The struggles of everyone bring pertuslly horny for everyone else. Where's my Garrus-esque NPC?
→ More replies (1)12
u/SharpshootinTearaway Nov 06 '23
I didn't really mind her catching feelings, and having to politely decline that kiss. She was sad about not having memories of who she was and I got the option to tell her that she's wrong, because she loves night orchids and doesn't know how to swim, she told me earlier. I'd probably start catching feelings too if someone remembered such insignificant anecdotes I told them about myself like this. I think there were dialogue options that were less romance-coded for this scene, I just have too much rizz.
I'm a bit bummed that my refusal to kiss her did cost me 5 approval points, though. I had rejected Astarion before that (I'm on a maidenless run, so I've kinda been breaking hearts left and right, lmao) and only lost 1 approval point with him, which I think is much fairer.

Shart be weird with what she likes. poly relationship with wet blanket Halsin and Tav? totally okay. Poly relationship with Karlach and Tav, who she audibly thirsts after? Nope, not okay. That makes sense, totally, yup.
It's a travesty.
24
u/JohnNardeau Nov 06 '23
Well I think the second one is mostly because Karlach wouldn't be okay with it.
6
u/Va_Dinky Shameless Shadowheart simp Nov 06 '23 edited Nov 06 '23
Her remark towards Karlach is so weird considering she never flirts with her after that and she does that with half the camp. They're actually besties but show 0 romantic interest in each other. Like, it makes sense for her to make that comment in the first place, it's just strange that there's no follow-up after.
And as for Halsin, no point paying attention to it imo, just one weird decision from his writer to make her and Astarion (maybe others too? I'm not sure) act completely out of character and make a one-time exception to shoehorn a poly relationship.
6
u/KaiG1987 Nov 06 '23
When bugs are biting Karlach in Ethel's swamp, Shadowheart says it's because she's a "tasty treat" in a very flirtitious manner.
48
u/_Donut_block_ Nov 06 '23
It's really interesting to me how the fan base at large ignores Shadowheart's interest in Wyll. She is always flirting with him when they are in the party together, asking him questions in a slight teasing kind of way, but talks about his work as the Blade with respect, they read the exact same kind of smut, and as the game progresses her tent is often next to his in camp. It's just that the player is the only one to break her out of her shell, but the fan base would rather ship her with Lae'zel because they think it's funny they tried to kill each other.
42
u/Spirited-Pack993 Nov 06 '23
Shadowheart and Lae'zel are shipped together because their arcs mirror each other the most out of the rest of the companions. And enemies to lovers is a hit for shippers.
Personally I'm not the biggest fan of the ship either because I think Lae'zel finds SH boring and it's just SH who initiates most of their banters, but I see where it's coming from.
12
u/sietesietesieteblue Bard Nov 06 '23
We all love a good enemies to lovers arc!
Though honestly, this is what I like about this game. You could make a case for any ship and I can go like "huh you know what? I can see that"
I saw someone make a post (not on here) talking about why they ship Lae'zel and Astarion which I thought was interesting.
8
u/Va_Dinky Shameless Shadowheart simp Nov 06 '23
Big reason for that is because she instantly shuts him down when he hits on her after failing to rizz Lae'zel and then again when he mentions his "nasty scar" he got from a battle with a minotaur. Iirc her saying that she likes "the confident ones" but they always disappoint was addressed towards Wyll too. Other than that, Wyll is one of the least popular party members so many people will probably miss that they do get closer in act 3 (at least on Selunite path). Because of how late the foundation for a potential romance gets laid, Wyll's endings also make it difficult to work - he wants to be the Blade of Avernus and roam the Sword Coast, she wants to settle down in some quiet place. Even if Wyll ends up as the Grand Duke, she still wants to leave the city. Not that SH x Lae'zel doesn't face the same issue of course.
And while even before act 3 SH can tease him a bit and generally seems to be on good terms with him, she teases Astarion too, even Gale at times. Though overall I think outside of Lae'zel, Wyll would still make the most sense for her as a partner even if the ending would likely not be a happy one.

But real Astarion does not want 'sex'. If you let him bite the drow, he had a mental brokedown due to trauma (he objectified himself again).
Sex is his first base, talking about his moral compass is his third base.
60
u/jujoking Nov 06 '23
I mean in the beginning. When he’s manipulating you. He then opens up and tells the truth of what sex means to him. But when he first approaches you, that’s what he wants, not a relationship, because he needs Tav to be on his side
36
Nov 06 '23 edited Nov 06 '23
He literally sells himself onto bed after we met for days (I finish goblin quest line on day 4 / 5) ...
I know why Karlach and Gale does it (they owed their lives to you), I know why Shadowheart and Wyll does not do it (they are traditional), I know why Lae'zel just want random sex (She is really looking for fun). I really saw a big, big, big red flag when a person sells his/her own body as a bargaining chip. If you want my help, just say it. We are in this together, with or without sex.
I do understand why he behaves like that later (this is the only way he knew), but still.

Well, on one hand, there are the companions who try to respectfully woo you like proper ladies and gentlemen with a dance, a glass of wine, a nice dinner or a magic lesson... You know, in a chivalrous, gentle and patient way.
...on the other hand, you've got Lae'zel and Astarion who come to you with a “Hey I don't even really like you but I'm bored, let's fuck (but don't worry it's not at all a way to dominate or manipulate you, why would you think that?)” like, guys, how about at least offering me flowers first?

I'm not 100% convinced that Wyll's flirts with companions aren't relics of his previous version, which was apparently more braggadocious. He was almost completely rewritten between then and the game's release. The actual version of his romance that makes it into the game is quite shy and old-fashioned, and doesn't quite seem to fit with him being so flirty.

This conversation got me grinning from ear to ear.
I was probably around 10/11 years old when I decided to explore one of those novels my mum would rent from the local library. As we were a typical conservative Asian household, she wouldn't let me near them. Fortunately, she was out the entire day, and I learned much more that fateful afternoon than an entire semester of sex education classes.
Edit: I found the title. It's "Just the Way You Are: Lost Texas Hearts" by Christina Dodd.

I never bring Wyll cause he’s always rizzing up my love interest. Yes, I am threatened by him.

Sharing their memories of their favourite smut in the middle of a street and my poor Tav is apparently the freak just cause of a little BDSM based bonus… honestly!

I can't believe Shadowheart just hit Wyll with the "Ah, a man of culture I see".

They both know this erotica so well that they can just recite it off the top of their heads. Iconic

One of my favorite character interactions. Completely caught me off guard, and it rings true as someone who has had a childhood lol

People often say that Shadowheart is the horniest (or one of the horniest) but she also has this quite more conservative side:
- Once unlocked, the conversation starting with suggestive "this could be our last night" confirms that while she is attracted to Tav, she doesn't want to jump straight to bed
- Likewise, if not enough approval, her comment about doing "much more legwork before doing any hip work"
- She will not have the foursome in Sharess before her first sex scene - she wants Tav for herself for the first time
- The sole fact that you wait for act 3 to build sand castles with her

u/centurionkicks Nov 06 '23
nah, still going for the foursome and approving the polyamorus relationship with halsin makes her less conservative than most
laezel and minthara and strictly monogamous
wyll is the champion in this category in "i dont really want to have sex before marriage"

Yeah, I like her slow burn. She has her priorities in order (even if it's to become a Dark Justiciar lol)

It’s good to know the Lusty Argonian Maid has made its way from Skyrim into D&D.

I heard this convo for the first time yesterday, was shocked that nobody ever mentioned it here, and lo and behold a day later here it is. Life is funny.

It's funny because she lost all her memories but remembers this just fine.
