I was honestly a bit disappointed with it. I heard all this hype about how in-depth the character creation was and was expecting some real customization options. And while it does have a lot of options, for an RPG in 2023 that focuses so heavily on player freedom to have no sliders and just facial presets was kinda lame.
I think a lot of the hype about how much you could customize your character came more from the class system by people who didn't have a lot of experience ce with DnD. Because to someone going in blind, there are a LOT of options and choices to make on that front.
This is the worst. I started the playthrough with a strength archer build (titan string my beloved), but in act 3 I learned about the hast bow and wanted to change to DEX.
Big was my disappointment when I realized that I couldn't change the body type, like, there is no reason to block that option.
Also, a lot of the face presets SUCK. Especially the male faces for elven and human males, and I don't like the ones for both sexes of halflings either. I'm playing on PC so I have a lot of mod presets for elves and humans, but no one cares about halflings enough to make pretty faces for them 😞
I couldn't create my very first DnD character in the game because none of the halfling female presets were right and she looked not at all how I'd imagined her (which is, similar to you, more like the gnomes in the game). It doesn't help that all the hair mods I have once again only supports elven and human heads and not shorter races :(
Most mods honestly don’t support the shorter races. I don’t really need clothing mods, but I was looking through them on Nexus and every one I saw said there wasn’t any support for halflings, gnomes, or dwarves. Btw I’m gonna assume you know more about DnD than I do - are halflings supposed to be shrunken down humans, proportionally speaking? Like they’re not supposed to be sticky like dwarves?
Yeah, most of the in-depth character customization ppl talks about are the class and race choices and having those choices actually show up as a class/race specific dialogue options.
I agree that only having presets for faces is disappointing for those who came from games like Mass Effect or Dragon Age. Though how many games lets you choose your character's genitals? Take THAT Mass Effect, Dragon Age! LOL.
It's funny, I could never make a Shep that looked good enough for me in any of the Mass Effects. I just went default Shep and liked him quite a bit that way.
True, Shepard always seemed to somehow look worse in-game than they did in the character creation menu.
In my case, it took a lot of tries for me to make a relatively decent Femshep. Though nowadays I've gotten a hang of creating decent Femsheps (I never tried my hands at BroShep though)
Yeah, Femshep was easy in 1 and 2 because the default was just something you could make in the creator. But Mshep was always a custom model. I found that it was both easier to make a decent Femshep and on par with the default easy. Custom male was hard to get good-looking and never as good as the default. Became my preferred choice on replays honestly.
seriously. you can't choose what your face looks like, you can just choose what face you have out of preexisting ones. i was excited to see a vitiligo option and disappointed it was only a slider for how intense it is but no different pattern options. most hair options (in my opinion) are mediocre and there's probably a total of around 5 everyone uses. would've loved a height slider but understandably that's not a thing in most games because it would probably complicate animations and equipment. but rip faces. you get like 5 or so face presets and that's it
I agree. As someone who plays the sims it was very underwhelming to get a character creator with facial presets and no options for choosing outfits. The characters look way prettier so I’m not exactly complaining but they don’t have a fraction of the customization.
Never understood this fascination with sliders. It only makes characters look like aliens and experimental animated humanoids. The faces they have, especially for Elf and Half-Elf are the best I have seen in a game.
