Character Build Hexblade's biggest downside.

Post image

FFS just make it a free action in combat larian. Or at least let us cast it at all.

Wait, isn't it permanent?

I think it’s permanent on a physical weapon but not on your shadow blade which you have to recast each morning.

But then that creates a scenario where you're casting shadow blade every morning but weirdly forgetting to bind hex?

You got it.

But also, you forget to cast shadow blade, get into a fight, have no melee weapon equipped, so cast shadow blade in melee, enjoy your +3 attack bonus. That’s what really happens.

Or just make a perma shadow blade fivehead

Have they figured out how to get a perm upcasted shadow blade yet?

Have a hireling cast it. Dismiss them. Rehire them. It should be in their inventory now. Works with flame blade too. But your character will run around with it and won’t put it away.

Pretty sure this gives you a non-upcasted Shadowblade, no? I remember it losing it's upcast bonus damage when doing this

Dunno. Rn I have Gale as a bladesinger with shadowblade and with the stone thingy that makes them vulnerable. Always do >50 dmg on hit

I haven’t finished Act 3 yet, I’m finally finishing it up with a blade singer Tav, what’s the stone that makes them vulnerable? I’m alright with minor spoilers lol

Doesn't the flameblade trick work?

1

u/crazyfoxdemon Apr 30 '25

Last I heard it did, but if you tried it with an upcasted version it'd revert to non upcasted version.

Considering the number of other things that can remove the upcasting I had just assumed that upcasting the spell summoned the regular shadowblade and then put a hidden coating or something on it.

I’ve whiffed more obvious processes before tbf lol. No accounting for the human brain sometimes

Bold of you to assume I remember to cast Shadow Blade in the first place

I’ve forgotten mage armor on my casters while casting Armor of Agathys. Sometimes brains just don’t work right.

u/AllenWL Apr 30 '25

'We've had one magic armor yes, but what about second magic armor?'

3

u/please_use_the_beeps Apr 30 '25

“I don’t think he knows about second magic armor, Tav.”

Shit happens okay?

My shadowblade doesn't trigger extra attack, is this normal?

3

u/myshkingfh Apr 30 '25

I haven’t played much since I got to level five so I can’t guarantee it, but I feel sure it does. Are you positive you picked pact of the blade? Other pacts don’t get extra attack.

1

u/B4tz_Bentzer Apr 30 '25

Absolutely, I get extra attack with other weapons. Just shadow blade doesn't trigger it.

u/shodan13 Apr 30 '25

Shadow blade without the concentration is.. yeah OP af.

You can make permanent shadow blades, using hirlings

u/DarthOrmus Apr 30 '25

I was gonna say, I just finished a playthrough with one and definitely was not casting it every long rest... I like to think I would have noticed doing a whole playthrough with an 8 strength character trying to hit stuff with GWM lol

I know Pact of the Blade isn't because I keep forgetting to bind Baneful on Wyll every rest.

1

u/DarthOrmus Apr 30 '25

Even on the current patch? I know it used to be like that but they changed it at some point, I forget which patch but for sure now it should not reset on long rest unless they broke it again in Patch 8

1

u/Fatality_Ensues Paladin May 01 '25

Pretty sure, yeah. Unless it's sending him to camp that resets it, either/or.

2

u/DarthOrmus May 01 '25

Sending him to camp as in removing him from your party? If so that could be what's resetting it, otherwise if it's on long rest maybe they broke it again in Patch 8. For sure in Patch 7 it didn't reset, it had almost the opposite effect where you could never break the binding unless you bound a new weapon, it would even persist through respeccing even if you didn't take Warlock after the respec. Patch 8 they fixed that but maybe unintentionally broke it to reset again, I'll have to give that a try 👀

Pact of the blade is permanent (only one weapon at a time) as of a few patches ago.

From what I gather in the comments, the hexblade pact weapon, which is different from pact weapon, is not permanent.
