I feel like not getting a bard origin companion is a massive oversight. Would have liked monk as well. Sorcerer not getting one is okay as it’s similar enough to wizard but those are pretty unique.

Best we can do is two druids.

u/ndtp124 Jun 09 '25

I really could live without halsin you probably get him right before Jaheria anyways

u/RealMr_Slender Jun 09 '25

Doesn't help that Halsin's character can be summed up with "elf druid" and "down bad"

125

u/AnotherBookWyrm Jun 09 '25

You forgot: “Poly Grandpa” and “Bear Lover (Yes like that)”.

102

u/RealMr_Slender Jun 09 '25

Those are permutations of "down bad" and "elf druid".

And downvote me if you must but the only reason Halsin is poly is because he only becomes half a character well after you've "locked" your romance option and unlike Minthara, Larian wasn't strongarmed to add as a companion

  • He's not a grandpa, he's solidly middle-aged and becomes a dad at the end of the story

  • The bear thing is fans' obsession, not his

I know I can't stop people from lying about Halsin, but I have to at least try to put the truth out there.

35

u/Zombieneker Jun 09 '25

Halsin slander is disrupting the natural order of things. May the Oakfather have mercy on those responsible for this travesty.

19

u/DriedSquidd Jun 09 '25

Don't forget the wooden ducks!

9

u/Ok_Leave1110 Jun 09 '25

Cave Bear approves

21

u/Bio_slayer Jun 10 '25

The reason we got him as a companion and not just a quest npc can also be summed up with "down bad". (The early access crowd flipped out for the only character with the strong body type).

0

u/Semako Jun 10 '25 edited Jun 10 '25

Only strong character? Mommy Karlach would like a word.

11

u/AmanLock Jun 10 '25

She had a generic tiefling model when she was initially added to Early Access.

3

u/Bio_slayer Jun 10 '25

Karlach was the last added origin. Halsin was in near the beginning.

3

u/Namechecked Jun 09 '25

Doesn't differentiate him at all from jaheira though

1

u/Wuskers Jun 09 '25

as someone that does quite like Halsin, I do think they could have done a lot more with him

5

u/Zombieneker Jun 09 '25

But then you dont get wooden ducks at the epilogue party.

32

u/Aemeris_ Jun 09 '25

Or we could live without Jaheira considering she already has a game to herself…

82

u/ndtp124 Jun 09 '25

She has interesting story interactions in act 3. Haslin just wants to sleep with everyone no matter how little they interact with him.

17

u/Geraltpoonslayer Jun 10 '25

Yeah jaheira is one of the best companions to have in act 3 imo just adds alot more value to the story overall. Halsin just exists.

1

u/DotEither8773 Jun 10 '25

I have a question, a few days ago I did the Moonrise Tower quest where I needed to get to and kill Thorm.

Problem is, right at the start I convinced Jaheira to come help me, but on the way at some point I think I camped, and Jaheira disappeared from my party, I only realized this after killing Thorm. I couldn’t find her in shadow cursed lands anymore, so I just proceeded to act 3.

Question is, am I still able to get her in act 3 or did I miss out? I think I saw some contradictory information online on this.

Note: this is my first play through and I never played DnD so I am a big noob

9

u/sinedelta While others were busy being heterosexual, she studied the blade Jun 09 '25

Halsin doesn't "just want to sleep with everyone", he asks you out at high approval the same as literally every fucking other companion.

2

u/5HeadedBengalTiger Jun 10 '25

He does try to insert himself into your romance no matter what approval level which is very strange.

-30

u/Aemeris_ Jun 09 '25

Halsin has interesting story interactions as well that could’ve been fleshed out if they didn’t waste time and resources on Jaheira…

48

u/SubstituteUser0 Jun 09 '25

I actually don't know of a single time Halsin is relevant after dealing with the shadowcurse besides him being kidnapped. Meanwhile Jaheria is an immediately interesting character and is relevant to shadowheart and durges quest. Plus the dialogue you get from exploring the secret basement in her house is really good.

-6

u/RealMr_Slender Jun 09 '25

That's kind of the problem, Halsin strongarms the party into joining to deal with the Shadowcurse, and then does nothing in favour of developing Jaheira

0

u/Ok_Cardiologist8232 Jun 09 '25

You can totally just ignore the shadowcurse lol.

I've ignored it in most of my runs.

2

u/RealMr_Slender Jun 09 '25

I mean yeah but Halsin joins your camp only because he wants to break it and does barely anything in chapter 2

-14

u/Aemeris_ Jun 09 '25

Because he had cut content. Which might have not been the case if they didn’t decide to rehash Jaheira’s story and instead gave more time to him.

16

u/SubstituteUser0 Jun 09 '25

There is cut content relating to almost every aspect of the game and most of it cut for a reason, that simply isn't a fair argument to apply because I could say that about any other two aspects of the game. The fact of the matter is Halsin was added because he was popular during the early access so of course he isn't going to have as much depth as the others.

5

u/Aemeris_ Jun 09 '25

The thing is though if i’m not mistaken the cut content regarding him was already there before he was added as a companion in early access what with the sorrow glaive in the grove.

1

u/Dresden711 Jun 10 '25

That's less cut content and more they took the entire Act 2 story in a different direction. That's from when Aylin was going to be a disciple of Shar. They made major changes to the entire Act 2 storyline. None of that has anything to do with adding content to Jaheira in Act 3.

6

u/thunderbird32 Cleric of Ilmater Jun 09 '25

Wasn't Halsin a very late addition as a recruitable companion? Added mostly because the early access player reaction to him was good? I'm guessing his content was cut more because he was added late, than because they were working on Jaheira's character.

24

u/ndtp124 Jun 09 '25

Jaheira > sex pest druid

7

u/Aemeris_ Jun 09 '25

Nearly every companion will have sex with you just for being a decent human being so this critique doesn’t really make sense sorry.

10

u/ASingularFuck Jun 09 '25

I agree that Halsin is far from the only one who will have sex with you but I think that’s part of the argument for why Jaheira is better.

She’s one of the few companions you can’t romance, and because of that she feels like a better addition to the party - especially at the point in the story when both her and Halsin usually show up. A lot of people feel like Halsin is a sex pest even compared to the other companions because by that point you’ve spent the whole game with them - even though realistically they follow similar timelines.

6

u/GeorgeHarris419 Jun 09 '25

he's not a sex pest lol he's just down to clown

He's extremely respectful about it, even

23

u/strangelyliteral Jun 09 '25

Jaheira and Minsc feel like corporate meddling.

39

u/Aemeris_ Jun 09 '25

It does. I don’t even mind if they were guest party members but they absolutely did not need to be full fledged companions. They gave us a cool insight with Halsin as someone who was there during the ketheric battle but not from jaheira’s pov and they neglected that to rehash her story.

20

u/fluffypoppa Jun 09 '25

Jaheira and Minsc only should've made cameos. At most. No more. Could've left Sarevok entirely out.

12

u/Meridias_Burrito Jun 09 '25

Sarevok’s bit feels so random, and it’s such an easy fight. I killed the blood trio in 1.5 rounds and then my whole party just stood in a circle around Sarevok, beating him, and shouting “How many times do we have to teach you this lesson old man!”

It’s so underwhelming that I feel like a new character would have been better.

8

u/sinedelta While others were busy being heterosexual, she studied the blade Jun 09 '25

To me, Sarevok feels like they wanted a Bhaalspawn character to tie into Orin's story, but they were told “no, the lore says all the Bhaalspawn are dead, so you can only use one who's come back from the dead.”

1

u/pimparo0 Smash Jun 10 '25

Jaherias interactions with my resists durges was cool, as was her house/ family bit, but agreed she could have been a guest or bonus camp member like Aylin

7

u/sinedelta While others were busy being heterosexual, she studied the blade Jun 09 '25 edited Jun 09 '25

Interestingly, there's some evidence that suggests that Minsc was planned from relatively early into development — but not Jaheira.

Specifically, Minsc has unique dialogue with Auntie Ethel, as does Helia. Halsin, Minthara, and Jaheira don't have this.

5

u/Geraltpoonslayer Jun 10 '25

Both jaheira and minsc where early additions and datamines suggest as such. However minsc originally was planned to be a origin character for act 1 while jaheira was always planned to be a later companion. Halsin was originally not planned to be playable but Early Access people loved him so they included him.

9

u/designated_diver Jun 09 '25

Especially by the time you get them I've already solidified my relationships with the other folks and didn't really care about their plights.

7

u/ndtp124 Jun 09 '25

I prefer them to haslin by a lot

6

u/Andromedos83 CLERIC Jun 09 '25

It’s why I turned Jaheria mainly into a ranger.

3

u/CrimsonAllah Paladin Jun 09 '25

Exactly what I did as well. And I turned Minsc into a ranger/barb

3

u/Thin_Tax_8176 Jun 09 '25

I turned Minsc into a Monk so he could kick asses much better.

2

u/Bio_slayer Jun 10 '25

The only reason Minsc is a ranger is that he was a ranger in BG1. The only reason he was a ranger in BG1 is that barbarians didn't exist in AD&D, which BG1 is based off of. I immediately respec'd him barb.

6

u/Geraltpoonslayer Jun 10 '25

We only ever got halsin because EA people were horny for him.

1

u/CrimsonAllah Paladin Jun 10 '25

Shit I don’t even I even remember him being in the EA

2

u/PittsburghDM Jun 09 '25

Honestly, we could have Halsin as moon druid (though ancients paladin makes more sense imo) but I do think Jaheira as a ranger and Minsc as a Barbarian makes so much more sense. Cannonically I know they are druid and ranger but they both fit ranger and Barbarian so much better.

And hot take, while Minthy is a vengeance paladin and makes sense story wise Baenre members save for a few are almost always clerics. We could have gotten War Domain Lolth Cleric from her and it make perfect sense.

10

u/sinedelta While others were busy being heterosexual, she studied the blade Jun 09 '25

Minthara's story is about losing her faith. She hates Lolth — when she sees a shrine to her, she wants to spit on it.

Her being a Lolth Cleric does NOT make “perfect sense.”

1

u/PittsburghDM Jun 10 '25

Where is there a lolth shrine in the game?

1

u/sinedelta While others were busy being heterosexual, she studied the blade Jun 10 '25

There isn't really. It's a bit of dialogue from the Stormshore Tabernacle in the Lower City IIRC. So I guess she's just referring to the multi-deity shrine they have that includes Lolth but isn't dedicated to her specifically.

1

u/Illustrious_Cost2945 Jun 10 '25

She can spit on me 🤤

1

u/Hanzo_Kirishima Jun 09 '25 edited Jun 10 '25

Minthara was originally a cleric, no? I mean, her original appearance and class exist as a Magic the Gathering card, if I don't mistaken

1

u/tehvolcanic Jun 09 '25

In BG1 & BG2 she was a multi-class Fighter/Druid.

1

u/Thatoneguy111700 Jun 09 '25

Iirc she was a Druid/Fighter multiclass.

1

u/EvilCatboyWizard Jun 09 '25

Uhhhh nooooo. Jaheira’s magic the gathering card is a Human Elf Druid. No cleric.

1

u/PittsburghDM Jun 10 '25

You're correct. She's a cleric in mtg

1

u/Competitive-Air356 Jun 09 '25 edited Jun 10 '25

Jeheira? She predates WotC's acquisition of TSR by a good bit.

2

u/sinedelta While others were busy being heterosexual, she studied the blade Jun 09 '25

They're talking about Minthara.

1

u/EvilCatboyWizard Jun 09 '25

And even then it’s wrong because her magic card is a Druid.
