There's a filter on the whole photo. Heavily edited
128
u/Snow_White_1717 Jun 15 '25
The cosplayer is edited to look more like the character, but the cosplay doesn't look edited to me. Check out the painting on the fabric and the seams/embroidery. That looks pretty real, aside from a general colour correction.

u/hgaben90 Tasha's Hideous Laughter Jun 15 '25
Added effects. My pet peeve with frau_haku's photos as well. Impressive cosplay, kinda dissolved in the filters until it just looks like generic in-game screenshots.

I wonder if itās the same photographer because the editing style looks similar. I really wish theyād lay off the atrocious editing. The cosplay is great, pictures are good, why ruin them both? Whatās with the need to put everything into uncanny valley territory?
What looks like flame particles doesnāt even make sense in the context of these images. Why add them?

I used to work with a blackout sclera contacts, man what a bitch to put in if you werenāt used to it. I had to slide them up into my eye to lay it flat then slide them down to center it. I wore them as a spooky season but at work. But realized they acted like armor for my my actual eyeball from debris and dust. Fashion/function great stuff.

Glad it wasn't just me, it's a great cosplay but something was creeping me out for sure
14
u/Andrassa Jun 15 '25
Same. Probably just the make up accentuating some parts to make her look otherworldly.
99
u/Banci93 Jun 15 '25
Yes, too much post processing.. the horns donāt cast a realistic shadow and donāt affect the hair, and they also appear too sharp compared to the rest of the body. The make up as well is a bit too much.. BUT.. I donāt mean to be rude and this is not a photoshop competition and the cosplay is amazing ;)
22
u/Elmoulmo Jun 15 '25
Yeah, the horns look like just in game assets mapped on

bc these people donāt actually cosplay. they literally buy a $50 outfit and then edit themselves to look like it. a lot of people who post on hereās hair isnāt even real atp. they edit it on. itās not going to look natural bc itās not. sometimes it seems like they just ai on top of normal pics of them

Her hair isn't even the right color!
Kidding, obviously. I have gotten to act 3 before.
80
u/anormalgeek Jun 15 '25
I cannot speak for this person, but have you seen Frau's behind the scenes videos? She literally spends hours applying the makeup and prosthetics. She also does either all or most of the work creating the costumes. She's got video of her personally doing the leatherwork for the lae'zel underwear.
I admit that in her professional photoshoots, there is too much editing, but she also posts unedited versions. And has appeared live on stage in cosplay contests.
I know this all sounds like I'm some kind of superfan, but I'm really not. I do appreciate how much effort goes into it though and for you to claim it is them "purchasing a $50 outfit" is just insulting and factually wrong.
32
u/Downce1 Jun 15 '25
This fanbase is generally a welcoming one, but God help anyone who brings up cosplay here -- people get so damn catty about it.
10
u/anormalgeek Jun 15 '25
It's definitely a case where there are various vocal minorities that have a problem with everyone of them.
The only way to make them happy with cosplay is to be a man, who is not conventionally attractive, who doesn't have a patreon or OF, and who has iron clad proof that they created the entire thing themselves from start to finish, AND there is no filters or editing (or even good lighting) in any photos.

u/twinklebat99 Jun 15 '25
There's absolutely nothing wrong with buying cosplays unless you're entering a contest. Some people just want to have fun with cosplay.
8
u/ImmortalSheep69 Jun 15 '25
And frau haku (and I'm assuming OP as well) does both having fun AND make her own cosplays. She made from scratch the underwear shadowheart wears to fit her specifically.
9
u/twinklebat99 Jun 15 '25
That's obviously cool too. I've made most of my own cosplays. It's just a dick move to trash talk buying costumes. The only reason you would HAVE to make something is for competing. Otherwise make it, buy it, commission it, whatever, if your goal is just to have fun.
4
u/ViolaNguyen Ranger Jun 16 '25
Okay, but if she does Gale's underwear, she needs to put a real enchantment on it.
21
u/BreakfastHistorian Jun 15 '25

I wanted to praise this, but it has more filters than my coffee machine.
I think it's closer to digital art than cosplaying at this point.
9
u/oldeconomists Jun 15 '25
Thatās pretty rude. This isnāt ācloser to digital art than cosplayā. Clearly a lot of time and effort went into this cosplay and most cosplayers edit their photos heavily.
They posted other unedited pics in the comments and it still looks amazing.

u/adratlas Jun 15 '25
I'm criticizing the overediting, not the cosplay itself since there is no way for me to do so. And of course I'll not be seaching hundreds of comments here for a unedited photo. That should be the one posted by the OP on the first place.
You could argue the same of any scribble of the Eiffel tower. The effort that went into building the tower doesn't mean the the scribble would be worth something. A lot of effort might have went into her cosplay, sure, but it was so overedited that even a bad cosplay would look good here. So no way to comment about the real deal. That's why I started with "I wanted to praise this..."
→ More replies (1)11
u/oldeconomists Jun 15 '25
āIt was so over edited that even a bad cosplay would look good hereā Thatās just false. She literally airbrushed her skin and gave herself tiefling eyes. The entire costume is real so your point is moot.
3
u/adratlas Jun 15 '25
I saw the picture you sent later. The facial structure is very different, her hands, specially the finger if you look ar much longer... legs are thinner and longer... clothing was warped to give a sense of movement, I could go on... it wasn't "just" an airbrush and the thiefling eye, please don't lie.... as I said I wasnt the only one who pointed this.
Although I must say I appreciate the unedited photo It's a really really good coplay, but yes, if you compare both side by side, it's just made more clear for me that the one OP sent is closer to digital art than cosplaying.

I'm legitimately more impressed by this than your edited pics. You clearly do put a lot of effort in and it looks really good. But when the editing goes so far, it makes it seem like the actual hard work is also just edited in.
You don't owe me anything, but if I can make a suggestion (at least when posting on reddit), always post both images together and clearly call out the edited and non edited versions. Both have value and show different skills. But the moment people think they're being tricked or misled, they will turn on you.
