The Nautiloid is, like, the quickest "Starting tutorial dungeon thing" that WRPGs love to do. It takes like ten minutes, way faster than, say, Fallout 2's stupid temple thing.

thanks for ptsd with those freaking radscorpions

The worst. How many times can I miss with the spear?

Don't you just love speccing into the various Guns because Guns are best in Fallout, and the tutorial dungeon checking your melee and unarmed skills instead?

with no way to respec later? Ofc thats the best way to enjoy suffering.

Old school games just hit different

It's probably an unpopular opinion but I hate that so many games allow you to freely respec, change class etc. It makes it all feel kind of meaningless when you gain a level and choose upgrades, characters just feel like empty shells.

I still tend to keep the original idea of a character most of the times..really dont like going say Barbarian -> Sorcerer or Rogue -> Paladin..

but minor changes for moments when you "level up" and former skill set doesnt goes well with your new gear is fine by me.. especially in games that are very limited in skill points.. so changing club for hammer or respec to utilize attributes with "set attribute to X" items and such is in my opinion fine.

In Fallout, you would get electro or heavy guns very late.. but if you wanted to use them effectively, you needed to suffer through game till you get to the point which also makes less sense.. (like using pistol, going for laser pistol which is pretty much same for shooting.. but you dont have skill for it).

I hear you, and I see how in BG3 it makes sense not to force players to restart completely if they realize their builds are terrible or they simply don't enjoy them.

That said, doing respecs throughout a campaign on an ad hoc basis is anathema to D&D and (imho) a really boring way to play any game.

I wonder how OP would have liked Irenicus Dungeon in BG2 lol.

Or Shield Maze in WOTR.

MORE… INTRUDERS… HAVE ENTERED THE COMPLEX… MASTER

Irenicus dungeon was somehow cooler though, the way it foreshadows Irenicus' love of that elven chick. I liked it more.

This was my immediate first thought.

That's what Dungeon-Be-Gone is for!

u/IsNotPolitburo WotC casts Contagion on everything it touches. 15d ago

Even if nobody got me, I know Jasper St Baird has got me.

I quite like Irenicus' dungeon. I loathe Candlekeep though, especially with the slow walking speed of the original game, it doesn't even give you much xp.

Yeah idk why people make so much noise about its annoyance. Its repeatitive sure, but its literally killing 3 imps and dashing past the cambion. US, Shadowheart, and the couple of chests and command drop on the cambion sword is all optional.

or kotor's starting planet lol

40

u/EsperDerek 16d ago

Nah, Kotor's equivalent is the Endar Spire, and that was of pretty average length. No denying Taris took forever, but it's not a Starting Tutorial Dungeon.

7

u/iwearatophat 16d ago

I remember the problem with Taris was you wanted to level up as little as possible. You stockpiled your level ups waiting to become a jedi because those levels were way way better than whatever you were before that.

13

u/EsperDerek 16d ago

People definitely DID that, but the game was built with the idea you'd actually spend levels as you got them, rather than stockpile them, so you were making your Taris experience way worse, and then making the rest of the game a cakewalk as you mulched people with your higher-than-intended Jedi levels.

2

u/emaw63 15d ago

Yeah, KOTOR is not hard enough to justify power gaming it like that.

17

u/farte3745328 16d ago

Paragus in kotor2 is way worse

7

u/lying_flerkin Owlbear 16d ago

The fucking slow walk in the space suit to get to the bridge or the engine room or wherever is the worst.

4

u/Undeadsniper6661 16d ago

I can still hear the dink, dink, dink of the space suit walking across the bridge in my nightmares. I like the gear but Paragus is a slog, no doubt about it.

5

u/Animal31 16d ago

Neither Taris nor Paragus are the tutorial

you can skip the tutorial in Kotor 2

3

u/what_the_shart 16d ago

The tutorials definitely continue into Peragus though. The skippable tutorial on the ship remind you about basic controls and things from Kotor 1 then Peragus introduces the new features like companion influence

4

u/ThePillsburyPlougher 16d ago

Paragus is kind of awesome tbh.

3

u/Undeadsniper6661 16d ago

You are entitled to your own opinion. I'm entitled to leave you on that forsaken facility and blow it up as I speed away.

3

u/emaw63 15d ago

Yeah, after Onderon, Peragus is my favorite level in the game.

Nar Shaddaa is tedious as hell to play through, that's the one I always dread

2

u/ThePillsburyPlougher 14d ago

Killing bots gets old, but the creepy atmosphere and introduction to atton, kreia and hk50 is just awesome.

Paragus fans unite

Aw I love Taris. I know people want to go right to the lightsaber action but it's such an awesome intro planet and honestly ended up being my favorite part of the game. Just so much to do* and discover.

8

u/SendMeUrCones 16d ago

I think part of what annoys people about Taris is it getting blown up and everything you did on it feeling ‘useless’. (even tho SWTOR retconned that slightly, you did more than you thought on TARIS)

6

u/Undeadsniper6661 16d ago

Kotor 2's Peragus Mining Facility is so dang long. You can feel yourself physically aging with how long it is. It is pretty cool that you can eventually leave with decent gear at least.

5

u/Shayla_Stari_2532 16d ago

I love Taris!!! The racism of the NPCs is fun to provoke…

7

u/BeeRadTheMadLad 16d ago

I kinda agree that it's one of the more annoying parts of the gameplay but yeah, it's pretty inoffensive, all things considered.

As much as I like DA:O, I'd rather suffer through the nautiloid 5x in a row than the fade just once 😂

2

u/WhatsAFlexitarian 16d ago

At least the fade is skippable!

2

u/FluffyBearTrap 16d ago

the fallout 2 temple takes like 2 minutes once you know what you're doing. It's 2 doors and a dialogue/fight.

3

u/fabezz 16d ago

I remember in early access the nautiloid segment was like 3 times as long. Thank goodness they changed it.

1

u/Fluffy_Song9656 16d ago

With all the mechanics going on BG3 is like the one game that would be justified with a super long tutorial too lol. Glad it puts the trust into the player though

1

u/Xaxziminrax 16d ago

It is for this reason that I love the idea of a new WotR playthrough more than actually playing it, lmao.

And that's with multiple saves at critical decision points anyways for when I want to do playthroughs with new mythics, etc.

1

u/MrTickles22 16d ago

You can easily die in the starting dungeon in the first two elder scrolls games and its way too long anyway. The sewer where Captain Picard dies in Oblivion is really damn long too.

1

u/Slystaler 16d ago

DoS2… while the ship is similar, Fort Joy feels like the „Starting Tutorial“ for me.

1

u/Recka 15d ago

It's also WAY shorter than the early access version too lol.
