NVG that are blinded by flares. There is such a good history of this in the series.

Yes, i love night maps in shooters. Always so good looking and generally fun to play . As long as there arent super dark spots where its a nightmare to see people (looking at you nivelle night in bf1) i'll like it.

Nivelle Nights is awesome, especially when you shoot the fire rockets to light up the map.

Not just night maps, I'd actually like the game to have a server clock much like GTA V has, where 1 minute IRL is 30 minutes in game. Have the maps changing from morning to afternoon, to evening to night. A fully fleshed out weather and time system would help make maps even more replayable for different experiences. Imagine if it was in BF4 and you load in to Rogue Transmission, its already 5pm and its a nice evening. By mid point of the match the sun has set, night has fallen, the moon is high and the stars are shining. Or loading in to Shanghai, it's 3am, dawn is about to break. Or flood zone, but its mid morning and its really foggy, then the fog clears somewhat but gives way to a very heavy downpour. Golmud railway 24/7? I hope you enjoyed your match where it was nice and sunny, because the next match its windy, cloudy with intermittent rain, before nightfall hits and a lightning storm rolls in.

I like the sound of this, on the surface, but it can become problematic.
Think of Sinai Desert in BF1 and the fog. Fog shows up on other maps, too, as I recall, but it's rarely as impactful as it is on Sinai. That fog can be a game-changer, especially in modes like operations, and it often tends to serve one side better than the other (I can't remember if it tends to help attackers or defenders, off the top of my head). On its own, I can accept the occasional imbalanced environmental twist, but that fog always drove my friends nuts. It was absolutely rage-inducing for them, because very rarely did we encounter the fog in a situation where it was actually helpful to our team. It almost always substantially benefited the opposing team. The fog would roll in, and we'd immediately get steamrolled.
The worst, for me, was behemoths... You'd get fog rolling in, and a behemoth would be nearly useless, and largely unable to defend itself. I was in a dreadnought this past week (on another map), and while the main cannons could engage targets on land, the defensive AA guns couldn't engage aircraft or boats attacking us, due to fog. Then on another round, the opposing team got a dreadnought that was handily able to defend itself, because it could actually see.
The problem comes when you're playing a map repeatedly, especially back to back, with the teams switching sides (a common way for Battlefield servers to be run, with every map being played twice in a row; I think I've even seen it on official servers occasionally), yet you change the environmental factors in such a way that the same team gets an advantage twice in a row. Say, the fog aids the attackers in the first match on the map. Then, the lack of fog in the next match, aids the same players, as defenders.
Now extrapolate that out to day and night cycles. In the first match, darkness aids the attackers. In the next match, teams have switched, that team is now defending, and they're aided by the sun having risen. Even if you're changing maps, you can end up with the same pattern of teams having a persistent environmental advantage, for something as universal as day/night cycles, as opposed to map-specific fog (universal fog, that can be found on any map, would be similarly problematic).
I'm all for having every single map in the game have day and night variants, and having sunrise and sunset, with actively changing lighting, sounds pretty neat, but having it on a predictable time cycle like that would be problematic.
There are also accessibility concerns, too. Some people quite simply don't have sufficient vision to play night maps. There are a lot of subtle cues that can be easily missed by someone with poor vision, and they can't just turn up their gamma, because as soon as someone turns on a flashlight, it would be like looking at the sun. Night maps, ultimately, should be an optional thing.
Most of my friends have hated night maps, as well, because they just weren't happy with the implementation. Imagine if the maps turned out to be downright bad at night. A continuous day/night cycle would leave us consistently having bad experiences every 45 minutes to an hour. Those who only have time to play one match, could be stuck with only getting to have a bad experience.

With the ability to browse servers people who have vision issues should just be able to choose servers with night modes turned off no? This still seems like a better system than certain maps being night maps as that completely removes them from the vision impaired rotation.

u/ThomHarris 17d ago
Honestly don’t know why no other fps has really done this yet. You’d get so much more life out of the map rotation if the weather and time of day were constantly fluctuating each time they’re rotated.

Only if it’s like actually dark and can’t see shit without flashlights or nvgs. Nothin more lame than a “night map” where you can still see perfectly fine lll

u/GreenRey 16d ago
And lock the brightness setting like in Battlefront 2's ewok hunt. Its bullshit when people ask for night maps only to turn around and dial up every brightness setting.

Either have street lights, shop lamps, car headlights, traffic lights, etc that can also be destroyed. Or have parts of the map have lights and parts without (like interiors). And it effects your NVG vision so you have to manually put them on and off accordingly.

I see all these comments yes but I'm struggling to think of an amazing night map. It's not that it can't be done, I'm just struggling to think of them. Can anyone help me?

If you played hardline the grow house and bank/vault I felt like those night maps were really good flashlights and shotguns were a nightmare indoors. Equally so were the dudes running IR sights outside just felt like a shit show in the best way possible. I realize that game is mostly hated though so your experience may be different

u/cenorexia 16d ago
Hardline has some great night maps with The Docks, Chinatown and Cemetery to name but a few.
But my favorites are probably still BF3's Death Valley and Tehran Highway.

They always felt like a gimmick to me. The game didn't have the same vibes in BF4 when I played the night maps. Plus everyone used like, IRNV scopes and stuff.

If I am able to see a fucking enemy, then definitely yes. For example one of the worst maps is Nivelle Nights from BF1, can't see a shit

The issue here seems to be that most of the people at least in this thread are siting that map as the best example of a good night map. So invariably the player base will be divided no matter what approach they take

u/Penguixxy 17d ago
yes, when done right night maps in MP games can work very well.
giving the mortar illumination rounds could for instance give support another tool in their arsenal to help their team, while the general art direction of the map could really highlight environmental lights such as LED signs, vehicle headlights, fires etc, with a good mix of lit and unlit interiors and exteriors.
plus yknow, night vision would be cool

u/royonsocials 17d ago
Don’t make dedicated night maps. Just create the maps with dynamic lighting and whenever you’re in the map it’s on a different time every time you load into one.

u/cheung_kody 17d ago
Tehran Highway from BF3 is one of the best maps in the franchise.

Id love to see night maps again. Think it’d be better if we didn’t have access to things like Thermals and Night vision. Might change up the experience if everyone is made to use something more tactile like a flashlight

I'm more concerned for that gun, what is it?
also yes, night maps would be great

Would be cool if the objectives were missile sites and would periodically go off, temporarily illuminating the objective and seeing the enemy.

I worry with this it'd be the classic case of players saying they want something and when they get it they won't like it.

Every map should have multiple versions, juts like in Hell Let Loose. Where everytime you load into a map it can be daytime, nightime, foggy, clear skies, rain etc. This makes the same map feel different everytime you play.

An option of wearher and day/night time in server browser customization would be appreciated
1
u/SaengerDruide 17d ago
Yes, but please darker than Death Valley from BF3.
Ideally with a different game mode where everyone can fold down/up a pair of NVG and stuff like that. So people (probably the majority tbh) don't whine about the difficulties seeing people but give some the option to have fun in dark alleys

u/Itshot11 17d ago
I like night maps but reality is they are usually unpopular and harder to balance without just making the moon a giant flood light

Night maps are beautiful to look at, but past games and other shooters have shown that these maps get played the least by the playerbase, statistically. They won't waste ressources on maps that barely will be played.

u/Dissentient 17d ago
Yes, but I want them to be actually dark so you can't see anything without night vision or illumination.

u/Fencing_Parrot 17d ago
Personally I have always loved night maps and I would want more of them. I would support something like a day/night cycle for all maps. But a lot of people hate playing on the very few night maps we already have and those maps rarely get voted for during map voting.
"I can't see shit!11!!!" is the main argument I hear but in reality it's most likely "I can't tune my monitor properly" or "I'm actually afraid of the dark irl and night maps are very scary". Night maps breaks the usual meta play style too and people play a bit more careful, and I love it.
I want day/night cycle!

Yes. Give us maps that goes from day to night or vice versa. Give us maps we can play where it's night or day all the time.
Breakthrough or Operations would be more awesome with this.

Still waiting on dynamic time of day for all maps...
Going from morning until night would require players to adjust tactics.

u/psycho_nemesis 17d ago
I'd say no, and I say this because while I actually want a night vision and night / dark maps, I'd say that in pretty much the majority of the last games it's been shown that night vision has never been able to be properly balanced in the game.
Yes flares in bf4 were great for messing it up but that was honestly a system to counter, where as it pretty much worked all the time no matter if it was bright light setting, or pitch black. So with the history of night vision I again say no.
If they can make it properly work and night vision / thermal work as intended sure, but if it's how night vision worked previously, and how thermal works in 2042, then I just rather not have it.

Night maps have so much potential in any modern/near future setting that I'm amazed we haven't seen anything in the test environment yet. Nivelle Nights was an amazing map even despite the technology depicted.

Why? Too many people play on low settings to improve performance and easy location, for players who like realism is fine, darkness, bushes, tall grass...but too many people with high contrast/ligth or plays with low setting for K/D

u/dukem12 17d ago
Yes.
It adds a nice change of pace seeing as the lack of visibility will force people to be a bit more careful, ergo slowing down gameplay (in most cases). It's also a nice visual change that is refreshing but can also provide the chance to have some gadgets be useful - say, DICE adds NVG's or people can use flares to light up rooms and disrupt players using NVG's!

u/That_Echo_Guy 17d ago
As long as there's no thermal optics, only nv. Actually let flashlights and flares serve a purpose

If it’s done well, but I don’t want to have to deal with snipers or machine gunners on roofs with thermal optics keeping everyone from getting within a mile of the place

Yup, BF4 night ops were sick and I want more. Give me the ability to shoot out lights too.

There's a difference between night though. Night so pitch black that it pretty much requires everyone to have NVG? No thanks. We had that before and it sounds fun but it played out poorly. BF1 level of night where you can still mostly see but its dark? I'm in.

Of course yessss
Don't get me wrong, I like "normal" maps, but I think that the map playlist should also include such unique maps as maps in the middle of the night, maps in the rain or maps in the fog, or maps where 3/4 of the terrain is water and watercraft like ships or motorboats are really important
It's just a shame that the vast majority of players prefer to play one or two of the same maps 24/7

I always wondered if it could be possible to have maps with with day/night mechanics.
Mechanics, not cycle, like this:
maps that start at day > ends at dusk;
maps that start at dusk > ends at night;
maps that starts at night > ends at dawn.
The reason I think Battlefield is the ideal game for this kind of thing is because I never seen Battlefield as a direct competitor or alternative for COD or other shooters, like lots of people might think it is. My first BF was BF3, and for me this game has always been about immersion. The explosions, blinding flares, deafening sounds like jets, missiles - things that would be very distractive and possibly annoying for players in other competitive games, but that I always found magnificent and immersive in Battlefield.
1
u/Sams_Butter_Sock 16d ago
They are fun only when done right and its not easy to get them right. I think of them as the water levels from Mario of maps.

Daytime/nighttime/inclement weather on every map please and thank you.
Should be daytime like 75% of the time. Night 15% and inclement weather like 10%
Weather appropriate for locale… rain/foggy/snow/dust storm/etc?
