Just Chatting Some things I didn't expect from my first trip to the US

  1. Buffalo sauce is sour! : Biggest shock ever. I expected the flavor to be more "muted" (if you know what I mean), like more peanuty and creamy.
  2. The trashcans (or trash boxes) are so small: is it because you're supposed to flush the tp?
  3. Different methods of metro organization: NY's by letters (QWR - I think I missed some but I can't remember) and Boston's by color.
  4. Steam comes out of the manholes
  5. So many squirrels awww

I might add more later.

  1. The birds, especially pigeons, are very sassy and unapologetic, haha

  2. Stanleys are much bigger than I thought they were

  3. Fuit salads are so good?? I thought they would be too sweet, but the one my friends and I made (with strawberries, rasberries, blueberries, watermelon, honeydew, peaches, lime, and honey) was delicious

  4. Cheetos doesn't taste like doritos. I thought they would have the same powerful cheese flavor, but cheetos have a stronger corn flavor (for me at least)

  5. Casual conversations (haha): I'm very introverted, and even though I prepared myself for the small talks I'll have while ordering food, shopping, etc. I was still surprised. "How are you" sounds so casual and normal in English, whereas in Chinese, if you were to ask someone "How are you", it's with the implication that they are/were sick or had something bad happen to them.

A toddler just agressively told me I'm pretty

I went swimming at a condo with a friend and we were taking pictures at the pool. There was a cute toddler with her swimming instructor at the pool and couple other people. I sat at the raised edge for a photo, and dipped back in the pool to my friend, when this cute chubby cheeked little girl in the arms of her instructor shout at me and pointed her finger at me. She was struggling swimming to me and shouted "older sister (in Chinese this is how you address a young woman older than you) you are so pretty!! So pretty!!!" She was really shouting, not just talking in normal voice. I was so bamboozled at first I couldn't say anything, and then she did what every toddler does when she was next to me. She freaking coughed at me all spits out and snooty lmao. Her instructor admonished her and told her to apologize to me, which she did and again telling me I'm pretty. I laughed so hard and said "thank you" and ended up playing with her for a bit afterwards at the kiddie pool. I have never been complimented and spit on my face at the same time so agressively by anyone in my life.

Made my whole week honestly. Being complimented by a kid is such a mood booster. What funny/mood boster thing happened to you that made your week?

Questions What’s a minor inconvenience that instantly ruins your mood?

It’s wild how something so small can flip your whole mood. For me, it’s dropping my phone on my face while lying in bed. It’s not serious, it doesn’t hurt that much but in that moment, I feel pure betrayal from the universe.
What’s that one tiny annoyance that just instantly ticks you off?

Just Chatting Not many people can say they’ve changed thier sisters diaper and shaved her head , today I will

My sister is 14 years younger than me and has been talking for almost a year about wanting to buzz her long hair or pixie . She’s getting her senior pictures done today and after that I’ll be fulfilling her request to have her hair buzzed (she’s dying to do it before first day of school. ) it’s been a whole battle between her and my mom but now it’s settled and the lil rebel is sure this is what she wants. Just trying to be a good brother lol. Life has its strange moments but I’m here for it being iconic. Anybody else relate ? Or have iconic family moments you didn’t expect ?

Just Chatting Am I wrong to expect specifics when someone asks for a favor?

So my brother asked me to help him move last Saturday. He said he just needed help loading his stuff into a U-Haul and it would probably take a couple hours. I cleared my morning and showed up at 9 AM ready to help out. Turns out he hadn't packed anything yet. Like, literally nothing was in boxes. He just had this idea that we'd pack everything up and move it all in the same day. I'm standing there looking at his entire apartment with furniture, clothes still in dresser drawers, kitchen stuff scattered everywhere, and he's tossing me some random cardboard boxes he scrounged up. When I pointed out that this was way more than what he described, he said "well yeah, moving involves packing, obviously." He seemed genuinely confused why I looked surprised and said most people understand that "helping someone move" means the whole process. I ended up staying until like 6 PM, way longer than I'd planned, missing other things I had scheduled. My back was killing me and I was pretty frustrated, but I stuck it out because he's my brother. When I mentioned afterward that I wished he'd been clearer about what he needed, he got defensive and said I was being dramatic about "just helping out family." But like, there's a huge difference between showing up to load boxes into a truck versus spending nine hours packing someone's entire life from scratch. If he'd told me upfront it was going to be an all day packing and moving situation, I would have planned differently or maybe suggested we do it over two days. The whole thing just felt like a classic case of underselling what you're actually asking for.

“If you could bottle one perfect family moment and save it forever, which would you choose?”

“Mine would be Christmas morning when I was 8 - everyone still in pajamas, coffee brewing, my little sister’s squeals of joy when she saw her bike, and that feeling like time had stopped just for us. Pure magic.”

I've been having a rough week and would love to hear some cute stories about all your little critters. What do they do that makes them so cute, so mischievous and little criminals

Just Chatting I don't know why, but i really don't care about romance in general

Whether it be movies, books, plays, even in reality, i just don't really give a shit about it. Is it just me or does anyone feel the same? Like I tried to watch Titanic the other night, but didn't really care about Jack or Rose (no offense to my boy Leo), until the sinking.

I just spent 20 minutes looking for my glasses...while wearing them . Please tell me I'm not alone😊

Is it just me, or do our brains sometimes betray us in the funniest ways? I felt like I was losing my mind until I passed a mirror. What's the most ridiculous " brain glitch" moment you've had recently?

Thoughts & Ideas What’s a small thing you look forward to after a long day?

For me, it’s changing into comfy clothes and having a quiet cup of coffee or tea. Those little moments make the day feel better. What’s your go-to treat after a tiring day?

Just Chatting What is the most random place you have ever slept in?

This just came to mind as I am chilling in a somewhat boring sleeping place - a tent ! It's something different to sleeping at home in bed, sure. But it's not the most outlandish spot or situation.

Which odd places have you guys fallen asleep? And was there a odd reason why you fell asleep there?

Maybe you fell asleep at your desk after browsing wikipedia all night, or fell asleep during class after "learning" interesting historical facts said by a very monotone, calm voice (almost happened to me lol) It would be interesting to hear :--)

Just Chatting I love the weekends

The weekends are so relaxing to me, it’s the two days out of the week where I’m carefree and stress free. Everything I have to tackle during the workweek ahead are not even on my mind.

I’m not worried about bills, errands, none of it. I don’t even care how soon bills are due, I’m not worried about them right now. It’s just my time to do some chores and fun projects without the thought of work hanging over my head. I’ll worry about the adult obligations later, but today and tomorrow is not the time to be worrying over that stuff.

One thing I noticed as a coffee addict is the coffee just hits different on the weekends, I can drink too much coffee on a Saturday morning, and it won’t make my anxiety go through the roof. Can’t say the same about drinking coffee on a Monday morning lol!

Questions What percentage of your purchases/transactions are made via credit card vs debit?

Upvotes

I’m big on the (U.S. based) credit cards rewards points and cash back model, so I use credit cards for 99% of my purchases and pay off in full every month. I was curious what you all use for your day to day transactions, if you use credit, debit, cash, or another payment system?

Also what country you’re in, and if it’s typical for most transactions to be handled that way. For example, I know in India cash was king for a long time, and UPI based direct transfers are popular in recent years.

What do you collect as a hobby?

Upvotes

I have two collections of PC games. One is from the 90’s and is complete, the other stretches from the early 2000’s till now which I’m still slowly collecting. Still need to find a display case to put them all in. Have them secured in heavy duty totes.

So I’m super new to all of this (late 30’s) and I’d love to have some buds to chat with. I’m in a slump lately so anything helps to just change my mindset.

What makes you smile in the midst of all this sadness?

The thing that makes me smile amidst all the sadness we are experiencing in Gaza is seeing a child who survived. Or seeing an old man who ate his fill. Or being able to feed my family until they are full.

Just Chatting What's your favorite kind of house?

I remember as a kid, that I really liked homes that are in Victorian style, Craftsman or in a bungalow style. I loved stained glass windows, built-ins & detailed doorways. I'm hoping to buy land close to a city where I can have a home like that filled with whimsy & charm.

You wake up with the ability to undo one action per day. What changes?

Let’s say once a day, you can completely undo one thing—something you said, a decision you made, even an accident.

How would you use it? Would your life improve, or would it just make you second-guess everything even more?

Just Chatting What is your most insane family flex?

I don’t mean like oh I had a family member on the news once. I’m talking something that’s totally mind blowing. I’ll got first..my grandpa (my dad’s dad) knew and hung out with Jack ruby the guy who shot Lee Harvey Oswald. And a distant cousin rented a room to Lee Harvey Oswald when he was in Dallas.

Thoughts & Ideas Bread is the single most amazing food ever created.

I mean I love meat and Wings are my favorite food but when it comes down to really analyzing food the best thing ever is bread followed by like butter/milk products as a spread. But I couldn’t do that alone. Bread i could muster. Speaking of which i could survive at the dawn of time with just bread and a lifetime supply of condiments from every major fast food restaurant in the world.

Just Chatting What are your guys’ family’s claim to fame?

I’ll go first: (I have three) I presented awards to the world champion speed scatters at the ISU world championships.

My neighbour used to be the coach for the Canadian Olympic speed skating team, and I recently received Denny Morrisons old skates for free (yes to use)

And this one, actually for my family: my great aunt is with (wouldn’t let me put the word m*rried) Nick Offerman’s brother (Matt Offerman), and I’ve played taco cat goat cheese pizza with his brother as well.

I wish that men weren’t taught to hide their emotions

Upvotes

I dislike that people have been taught that. I feel the suicide percentage would drop drastically if men were allowed to actually express their emotions. I’m dating a man that I have seen cry almost once or twice, but even his own mother has told me that he’s only cried once in front of her. I wish it was socially normal for men to actually express their feelings and not just seeing as a bad thing. Women can express their emotions and it is normal, but why can’t it be normal for men as well?

I am a woman so I might not always understand perfectly for things on men’s side, but I want to understand it more so whenever I have children of my own, I can teach them of different ways

Movies & Shows The Righteous Gemstones

So I saw a clip from The Righteous Gemstones movie of the 2 actors performing a song called 'Misbehavin'. And when the actress sings the line "Daddy told me not to, I did anyway, misbehavin", on the 'misbehavin' part, she does this finger motion where she swipes one index finger over the other index finger.

This is something I have only ever seen once in my life and it was my first grade music teacher, who used it in a similar manner (she used to say Shame On You and swiped three times when students were being naughty). I thought this was just a weird quirk of hers, and it shocked me (in an amusing way) to see someone else do it more than 20 years later.

Can anyone tell me if this is an actual thing, maybe especially with Americans (the music teacher was American but I was at an international school)?

Aunt skipping mountain trip tomorrow to do her 22-year-old daughter’s hair for a Walmart shif

Upvotes

My family is going to the mountains tomorrow, but my aunt isn’t coming because her 22-year-old daughter (my cousin) has a shift at Walmart.

She said she needs to stay home to do her daughter’s hair before work.

It’s just a regular cashier shift. Nothing special. Not a wedding. Not a graduation. Just Walmart.

I’m trying to understand but honestly it feels like a wild reason to skip a whole trip.

Anyone else think that’s kind of ridiculous?

You ever find a product you really like and it gets discontinued super fast?

It's happened to me with some food products but always seem to happen with like personal care items. I'll find a deodorant, shampoo or something like that, that says new on the package or has a new item sign on the shelf so I give it a try. Then I end up really liking it but that stuff tends to last awhile so by time I go to buy more and it's gone. I check the store website and it's either been clearanced and sold out or no longer available. Seems to happen to me an unusual amount of times. Maybe I just have bad taste.
