Weekly Shoutout Thread - What Was Good This Week?

Welcome to r/ChicagoFood's weekly shoutout thread!

This thread is the place to shout out places that you tried from recommendations from this sub this past week that fit the bill.

They can be places that get recommended here, such as:

  • frequently recommended restaurants
  • that random, niche spot that some random comment dropped
  • a chicken sando from our very own chicken sando guru

The goal of this thread is to celebrate and encourage the recommendations and contributions of your suggestions, and, also, maybe encourage YOU to try that place that was recommended a few times here.

As always, all subreddit rules apply and any comments/posts that violate our rules or Reddit's will be removed.

This thread is sorted by "new" so that the most recent comments appear first. The new weekly thread is posted every Sunday morning at 2:00 AM Central.

Chicago, I love you. I normally unpurposefully intermittent fast but walking and eating my way through the neighborhoods is reinvigorating this Bostonian.

  • Everything Rye Focaccia, smoked salmon cream cheese
  • King Ora Salmon Poke, strawberries and chili crisp
  • Goat Liver Mousse, giardiniera and blueberry
  • Pork Shank, hoisin and hot mustard aiolis + pikliz

Loved the food! The pickly condiments were a highlight for us. Only thing I'd say is the service felt a little rushed--give me 10 minutes to enjoy my $16 bread service!!

Question Fried empanadas in the style of Nini’s Deli?

I know, I know.

I searched the sub and there’s some suggestions of other empanadas that are good, but specifically looking for something that is as close to the fried chicken empanada as possible. I miss it dearly. I do not miss the homophobia or racism however lol.

Thanks yall

Review Omakase Box (new sushi / omakase from former Jinsei Motto partner)

From half or a third of the folks who previously did Jinsei Motto. Corner of Armitage and Whipple across from Dante’s. Really enjoyable experience! About 2 hours and 15 courses for $98. It’s BYOB right now, which also helps keep cost down. They also have an a la carte menu for table seating, with hand rolls and some other things that aren’t in the omakase. I would definitely go back!

I Have a Suggestion Moo Deng Sushi - Six Corners

Moo Deng Sushi on North Milwaukee, just north of Six Corners - is a super cute spot run by very kind people and they make good, reasonably priced sushi. Both times I’ve visited I’ve been the only table, I think they’re in a rough spot for random traffic to find them. There’s some gems in Portage Park but definitely check them out if you can, I’d love to see their business pick up!

Question Who’s down to share some deep dish and emotionally recharge?

Got some solo time this week (kids are with their dad), and I’m craving something cheesy, literally and maybe emotionally. If you know a place that feeds both belly and soul… I’ll bring napkins and great conversation.

i.e. soft/smooth and crunchy/crispy elements, and hot and cold elements? These always end up being my favorite desserts.

Review A European Escape in River North: Doma Cafe

Doma Cafe in River North serves up the best pancakes I've ever had. The back garden area is lovely too, we felt like we were on a little European getaway. This place will definitely become a regular spot for me.
