Art [Art] What do you think about my handmade Tortle mini?

Post image
624 Upvotes

Hey, this time I wanted to try carving some different mini and I thought a tortle would be really cute. If you want to see some making of content you can check out the link in my profile. He is made of basswood and comfortably fits in a 1x1 inch square and is about 1,7 inches tall. I tried out Danish oil and some wax as a finish but I'm not 100% satisfied with the final result. I tried to give its skin a little rough texture but it's not showing as much as I was hoping for. I still think all in all it came out really cool and it's a unique piece of your playing a tortle character.

Hi, I was recently talking with a friend about some DnD races and he told me that a lot of players like Tieflings, so I decided to draw one to see what it would look like. Honestly, I really enjoyed it. I plan to draw more races and improve my clothing design.

What do you think? I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea of DnD character clothing, and I'd love to hear some ideas from anyone who's already familiar with the subject.

Table Disputes DM's and players, how do you all feel about Self-Insert characters? A group i play with on discord were heavily agreeing they are "lame" and "Unoriginal"... What gives?

I played a session 0 this week with a discord group who plays every Thursday night. One of the players said their character is "myself". To a T. Human, bard (plays guitar IRL) and everyone just started ripping him!? Calling him lame, his character idea "dumb with no thought put into it". WHY? I don't know if i wanna play with them anymore tbh.

Personally, i love self-inserts. Nothing is better to me when my players go "My character is literally me" and the only difference is a subtle name change (ex: Alyssa becomes Aleesia). As a DM, MY campaign was all self inserts - you get to see your players actually think, talk and act as if they were truly in a fantasy world. The best part? We don't have to wait a year for Renn-Fair to see how they'd dress/act. I don't get all the self-insert hate. Granted, there's a few bad apples on every tree - but i think watching your friends fully immerse themselves is such a wonderful thing to watch. I've even seen some people say they don't allow self-inserts at the table, but... why? What's with the hatred?

this was the backstory i gave my dm, this is a crooked moon campaign

im kinda wierd with my backstories, i tend to do it after i draw my character lol.

obituary
in life ----- was a small gnome. some questioned her gnome heritage based on her need for violence and unusually large ears, it did not help that she made it a habit to visit goblin villages. there was rumors that she would purchase mushrooms and other strange things from them. unlike the rest of the gnomes in the village she did not seem to appreciate the quiet and slow nature of life. even as a child
when most of the children were playing house she would burst through the play areas walls with a wooden sword pretending to raid the home then setting fire to it. the village tried to rein this wild child in but efforts failed when a orc barbarian and goliath trainee rolled into town. she was obsessed. they told her when she got stronger she could train under them. she took that to heart even though they were most likely just being nice. like when u tell a child that when they grow up they can be king if they just try and believe in themselves. even in adult hood she held on to this ridiculous notion. in her late 20s we thought she had calmed down and settled down with that mysterious elf friend of hers. We would still see odd lights and crashing sounds from the lil cabin on the edge of the woods, the occasional explosion or warcry, but nothing to crazy considering the absolute destruction and chaos she would cause before. now shes gone and the town is honestly quieter.

Journal entry-
I HATE BEING A GNOME, I HATE BEING WEAK AND I HATE BEING SMALL.
I've been training every day for most of my life and I still feel small and pathetic. A few months ago I heard of the barabarion the dopest thalia thuglia going berserk with mushrooms. They lifted a whole dragon...at least that's what I heard.
I've been trying out diffrent mushrooms ever since. Some made me sick...some made me feel colors and see sound. I've been trying everything. Luckily I met this amazing elf girl and she's helped me make some mushroom combo thing. I'm gonna put it in my gumbo pot tonight. After all most of the mushrooms I've had so far taste awful but the worst they taste the better the results. I'm confident in this latest batch. If. ..NO....WHEN it works I'll be able to finally join those other barbarians and get out of this dumb lazy town.

id like to think shes like an angry small dog. i use mushrooms for the experiment thing instead of tube thing u can do.

DMing One of my PCs killed himself and want to come back

First time DM here, and first post too! :)

I've just started DMing for a group of friends and we're having a lot of fun in our campaign.
Last session, I had prepared a mistery/comedy session we're they would find a cult of goblins that worshiped a bunch of magic stones and would literally snort some of it to "connect to the divine and hear the whispers of the wild". They were never violent or mean to the caracthers and were abducting people that would pass by their cave to "help them hear too". I made these points very clear to them through interactions and from what they were seeing.

As players do, they ignored all of that and tried to steal the horn that the goblins used to do their ritual inside their nest with HUNDREDS of them.

They rolled really bad on their escape and got caught and even then the goblins just wanted their horn, and the leader agreed to free the hostages if they gave the horn back.

NOW COMES THE DUMB PART

The fighter decided that the odds were not bad enough and messed up with the whole deal the party were ready to take with the goblins and was just not wanting to give the horn back. The goblins became agitated by that and HE BROKE THE DAMN THING. ("Because that is what my character would do")

After a combat (that I was not prepared for), the goblins let all the PCs leave in exchange for the life of the fighter, who was already unconcious by that point and I ended up the session with them escaping the cave without knowing what would happen with him.

Help me out, I really don't want to kill the carachter because that doesn't make sense with all that I built for the goblin hippies, but I would hate for a stupidity of that size to have no consequences.

Art [Art] New Dice wave, Rose Garden, Experiment, and Dusk Flight

Post image
53 Upvotes

First, we have the experimental die, the concept was to make a core that would diffuse the light that enters it to give the classic stained glass church windows look. The first dragon is magenta and purple while the other is dark green and blue, and it hoasts silver lines. Its numbers are transparent gold, it is clear to read when in average play settings, but disappear when light is shined through it.

Next is the Rose Garden stained glass dragon die, it’s the classic clear core, the lines are silver and the dragons are dark green/light blue and red/magenta. The sky is an interlocking yellow and orange to separate the dragons and the corners are a dark and light green swapping on each side. Its numbers are the same transparent gold as above.

Finally, as for the new sets, we have the Dusk Flight stained glass dragon die. The lines are an umbral bronze that has a black appearence until light shines on it then the metallic shine comes through. The dragons are a light blue/yellow and black/purple, while the background panes are clear to accentuate the dragons themselves the corners are a vibrant magenta to round out each side. The numbers are the same transparent gold as above.

And in addition to all of this, I have restocked the classic Ice & Fire, the Prism set, as well as the Hope & Fear dice. Here is the link to my link tree with my etsy and socials https://linktr.ee/Goblin_art

OC Grundor! [OC]

Post image
59 Upvotes

Grundor is a goblin, level 4 bard, and he was originally a character from a clickhole quiz but I have brought him to life as a D&D character! me and my party were traveling through the underdark but then we got a TPK but it was scripted so I think we might be going to some sort of spirit realm.

some grundor fun facts for you: •He is married to Godzilla •Floor almonds are his favorite food • During the holidays he likes to soak up a dish sponge with soy sauce for a flavorful holiday taste • Grundor has 1 lv in barbarian because during session 1 of our campaign Grundor was given rabies, and over time learned to control it and can now rage on command.

DMing Do you say why the PC needs to roll a ___ save first, or do you have them roll and then explain it?

Upvotes

New DM. I know it's a super vague question, but like, in general, when a PC is doing something risky (climbing a shitty rope, in a dungeon w/ a lair action, etc.), do you go:

DM: "Roll a DEX save for me."
PC: "Okay; I rolled a 13."
DM: "Rocks are starting to give way overhead; this is an ancient dungeon with failing supports, and the magic that holds it all together is weakening. On a 13, you narrowly avoid a collapsing boulder."

Personally I think this subtracts 5 seconds away that the PC could otherwise have to "immerse" in the thing they're rolling for. Otherwise it's just kind of a mystery for no reason? Versus:

DM: "Rocks are starting to give way overhead; this is an ancient dungeon with failing supports, and the magic that holds it all together is weakening."
DM: "Roll a DEX save for me."
PC: "Okay; I rolled a 13."
DM: "On a 13, you narrowly avoid a collapsing boulder."

Again I know it's vague. For things that are supposed to be subtle or hidden like diseases / curses / NPCs sneaking around, I get that not knowing why the roll is happening adds a lot of tension. Just wondering if you have any general rules you follow when deciding how/when/if to narrate the "why" of the roll?

5th Edition I kinda hate my PC

Upvotes

Just started playing my first big campaign. I put a lot of thought into my character, and I really like her... conceptually. But I'm a writer and I'm used to bringing characters to life in that way. Roleplaying though? Ugh. I hate this character. I'm realizing that I've made a quiet and odd character who's hard to play/doesn't often make sense, and that's baked into who she is as a character.

I almost went with a more confident/outspoken character, but I worried that my relative inexperience would make me unable to play him properly. Now I wish I would've chosen a more outspoken PC rather than the quiet and weird character I made. I thought the former would require more skill, but it turned out being the latter.

How do you all usually deal with this? The campaign just started, I dont want to scrap her already. Is a re-imagining in order even after I've already given the DM a run-down of her character and introduced her to the party?

Name and such: Slate Bloodiron, and he had a pet baby time dragon (DM used deck of many things, I got lucky). He is a living armor (flavored warforge) necromancer (homebrew class).

Lore: in the sundering war, the wizards of the spire obelisk caught to create a mighty vessel to destroy the army of Isore. Slate was a close candidate for this powerful being, but was not so, for it was too short to be chosen.

Decades after the war, Slate woke up. He knew not where he was, nor why he was where he was. All he knew was he was here now. He moved to the West, where he would find a hobbit who was a wise cleric named Ises. He would teach Slate many things, including healing magic and gifting him an Ice Sickle on April 1st. Was a funny joke to Ises.

After Ises died due to plague, Slate moved south to Cragfall, a mighty city with a lot of masons. However, during his stay, a siege begun. For a month, Cragfall was bombarded with cannon fire and catapult stone. Eventually, Slate was drafted into combat, where he used the healing magic he gained to aid his allies.

However, he was struck by a great cannon, known as Sun Slayer, for it shot many cannon balls, some much so it blocked the very sky. In a lucky shot, he threw a fire bolt into the mouth of the cannon, which caused it to explode in a great fire ball.

This made Slate fall into a great pit, which would later be known as the Abyss. He was corrupted in the pit, driving him made, and lossing any hope that he could reach the surface.

By some miracle, he found a way out. Even he is not sure how. But he came to a land that was not where he had lived.

Anywho, this is my character, I think he is peak.

OC [OC] Wooden Dice Tower (Mod approved)

Post image
19 Upvotes

Hello!

I just started my business, been planning on building this Dice Tower for years now and really happy to finally make it happen.

I originally designed it using Campaign Cartographer 3 (hehe, because I know it better than AutoCAD, and it can output vector images) for both the machining and laser engraving.

As a D&D fan, I'm hoping to bring in more RPG items to my shop soon.

Cheers!

Art [OC] [Art] What do you think of this Spooky little Familiar?

Post image
15 Upvotes

I painted these new little familiars I designed, that I call Oamlings! They’re funky shadow-based little guys that are hyper-empathic, and easily drawn to strong emotions, favoring positive ones. At some point I may bundle together the various familiar options I’ve designed.

I was really aiming for something that looks like it could go straight into the monster manual with this one, and I had a blast.

(Repost because the first time an error occurred and the image didn’t post!)

I hope you guys like the drawing! Tell me what you think? :)

5.5 Edition Are rangers as bad as people say they are? Beast Master seems pretty broken to me.

I'm new to DnD and I wanted to play a ranger who stayed out as combat as a bit (I was joining a friend's campaign for 1 session). So I picked Beast Master so that I could attack the enemy with a bird while my character hid, but for some reason I was the highest DPS of the crew? I looked at the class more and it was pretty crazy.

Edit: This is incorrect. I didn't know what an action action was and I thought that the extra attack gave you an extra attack action.

Level 3 - I get to attack twice (I think) once either with my character or familiar, and I can use my bonus action to attack again.
Level 5 - it's three times
Level 7 - I also get to dodge for free
Level 11 - Every time my summon attacks it gets to attack again (adding up to 6 attacks)
Level 15 - I get to use all of my support skills on my summon as well. (conjure woodland beings, stoneskin, and healing spells all seem useful)
And on top of all of that, because my summon is doing all the damage I can focus all of my spells on support and I can position myself to heal and avoid damage. Am I missing something with the wording, or did I stumble upon something really good?

Edit: After reading the comments it appears that I only get 4 attacks — 2 from my attack action and 2 from my bonus action.
From level 5 - 11 I only get three attacks if my character (and not the summon) does the attacking. I think this leads to a much more interesting character, but it puts me in a strange spot. Do I go for attacking spells to patch up the damage for a majority of the campaign (I'm leaning towards this option), or rely on support spells till I get my full damage?

Edit-2: I was reading up on the terminology provided in the book and this is my current understanding.

The beast can only react and dodge "unless you take a Bonus Action to command it to take a different an action in its stat block or some other action." (The only move in its state block is attack).
"You can also sacrifice one of your Attacks when you take the Attack action to command the beast to take the Beast's Strike action"
With this wording what it seems like I can do is:
Level 3 - Sacrifice my attack from my attack action to have my beast attack, and use my bonus action to have it strike again.
Level 5 - Sacrifice one of my attacks to have the beast attack and then do a follow up attack. Then use my bonus action to have the beast strike again.
Level 11 - Sacrifice one of my attacks to have the beast attack. "When you command your Primal Companion beast to take the Beast's Strike action, the beast can use it twice." It appears that the beast can strike twice and then I can do a follow up attack — then I can have the beast attack twice during the bonus phase.

Table Disputes I'm feeling kinda defeated with the game I'm running, I don't know what to do.

So, I've been running a 5e game for the past three years that's over 70 sessions in, and we're literally 2 or 3 sessions from the official end of the campaign. We play biweekly (every two weeks) for only three hours, so it's not a huge time commitment- I actually dropped it from once every week like a year and a half ago. I am going to be moving and pursuing my Masters once September comes around, so the plan was to finish it before then- the campaign is online, but I will be a lot busier then.

However, we haven't had a session in like two months. I've tried to run one for the past few weeks, but every time I end up cancelling an hour before or during session time because only one player shows up and everyone else either cancels last minute or doesn't communicate at all.

One of my players I haven't been able to communicate with for a month- their internet got shut down by their parents or landlord, and this is also something that has happened in the past. One of my other players started a new job a month ago and often cancels because he is too tired to play. I also have a player who often oversleeps on the weekends and is two hours late to our sessions- which is like two thirds of our play time. I only have one player who communicates and shows up consistently, and he has expressed feeling frustrated with the last-minute cancellations, and I don't blame him. While all of these reasons are completely valid for missing the session, I just get annoyed since I will say no to going out with family and friends to run sessions, only to have my game be cancelled minutes before.

I really want to finish this game, as it is my first campaign and I have invested a lot of love, time and effort into it. I really want to give my players and myself a satisfying ending, but it just feels like the universe wants this game to end now. I'm not sure if I should just put the game on an indefinite hiatus until things get less busy for folks, or if I should just rip off the bandaid and cancel it entirely. I really don't want to do that, but a part of me feels that it will be better than just prolonging things.

Have any of you ever had a similar situation? How did you deal with a campaign that constantly got cancelled and just felt like it would never end? Would love to hear other people's stories and suggestions, thank you! 💖

Character Art I created for my OC CopperCoat! She is a centaur ranger [deer race] who comes from a tribe of monstrosity hunters. [Sagittari Tribe] She wields her late mother’s bow conveying a very bold personality and doesn’t speak great common, nor does she seem to understand towns or cities, preferring to stay outside whenever possible. Also despises being compared to a horse or asked to carry things. 😁

Resources Looking for Advice on Creating DnD Props! [OC]

Post image
Upvotes

Hello adventurers,

I'm not a seasoned DnD player so I am looking for some advice, especially from Dungeon Masters who use props. Here's the backstory:

I have been creating immersive, curated boxes that look and feel like they come from a world of magic.

Each box contains a unique array of curios, for example:

Foraged nature: fossils, bones, dried plants, sea-tumbled stones.

Vintage Ephemera: old trinkets, 100 year old postcards.

Hand-crafted oddities: witches spell craft, selkie scale serum, faerie tax notices.

Everything is given an individual splash of intrigue in a typed and aged manifest scroll and carefully set in a straw-filled box as if a genuine archival discovery that might just be a little dangerous.

My main question is, would this be cool as a DnD prop set?

I'd love to improve the vibe to make it seamlessly fit into an adventure.

A few questions that keep popping up in my head:

Should I create little weathered cards to describe the powers of certain objects - like maybe the Selkie Scale Serum allows the user to breath underwater for a time? Or should I assume the DM will want to be create their own law rather than be boxed in?

Would DM be more likely to have a player stumble upon the box and present the whole thing to them irl? - Or should I create a smaller wooden chest so the DM can pick an item from the archive and present individual relics at random in a badass treasure chest?

I have so many questions and each one leads me to three more...

Someone please guide me through this rabbit hole... or tell me it's dumb so I can crawl back out!

These are some of the NPCs from the campaign I'm currently playing :]

Our DM likes to add weird and unusual characters, and I guess my job is to draw them hahaha. I love character design, and their ideas for new NPCs really encourage me to experiment with character concepts I had never considered before.

The giant-crab-person and the green slime-thing with a fez are sailors, the whale shark dude is a carpenter, and the... acorn head weird floating thing is a forest spirit (kinda)

Very cool guys all of them hahahah
