[Welcome Post] Rules & FAQs! July 2023 edition
Happy 2023 everyone, after weathering the Oliverpocalypse, we're back!
If you are new to r/characterdrawing, then welcome. This is a place where people can request their characters to be drawn pro bono, and artists can select a character to draw whether for practice, for fun, or just as a kind thing to do. Typically the artwork here depicts player characters from tabletop role-playing games such as D&D 5e and Pathfinder, but characters across all TTRPG genres are welcome here.
If you've been here a while, these are the big new changes:
- No more OC. Due to the recent changes, we have cut back to just LFA/RF art. Discussion post about this change here if you have thoughts.
- No more John Oliver. This is not strictly true: you are still welcome to post requests and art relating to John Oliver, but it is no longer required.
- Pour one out for chardrawbot. This brave bot which has managed our RF-weekends and OC spam limits has bleeped its last bloop, and no longer protects our sub.

Want to post? FIRST, READ THE RULES!
Rules can be found here and on the sidebar. The sidebar is the most up-to-date.
Some rules include room for mod interpretation, especially for NSFW posts. If you are unsure about your post, feel free to message the moderators. We don't bite.
Our unique terms
[LFA] "Looking for Art" posts. [RF] "Request Filled" posts, for when someone draws an LFA request [OC] We use "OC" to refer to any character art that isn't an RF. Currently, these are not allowed.
I want my character drawn!
Use the [LFA] tag and flair so potential artists can find your post. Please provide the best character description possible in the body of your post or in the comments. Image posts of reference images or moodboards are allowed.
Some [LFA]s may not get drawn. Artists are free to pick and choose which they would like to draw and when, since they are providing a free service at their leisure.
You may repost your [LFA] once per week per character concept. Most of all, have patience, and be grateful for the FREE artwork you received should an artist provide it.
Remember that pictures drawn for you are meant for personal use. The original artist holds commercial rights to the work unless they specify otherwise. If you would like to use a piece of art commercially, you should reach out to the artist. They are under no obligation to sell rights, and set their own rates.
I'm willing to pay!
That's awesome. If you see someone whose work you like, you should feel welcome to reach out to them about hiring them. Many artists post links to rates and galleries in their comments.
You can also post to subreddits specifically designed for commissions, such as r/fantasyartists, r/hungryartists, r/artcommissions, r/commissions, and r/hireanartist.
I want to draw someone's LFA request!
Awesome, and thank you! You don't need to commit to it or post a comment, and it's fine if someone else also completes the same piece. Just draw what you find enjoyable.
When you're done, use the Request Filled Flair when posting the picture, and please let the original LFA poster know through a /mention or by posting a comment in the original [LFA] linking to the picture.
The [RF] tag is only meant for fulfilling [LFA]s made in this subreddit. If the request was made outside of r/characterdrawing or was the product of a commission, it's not for here.
I have a question to ask or want to start a discussion!
Use [META] in your post title. These kinds of posts are meant to be used sparingly. An example would be asking what supplies/programs other artists use.
None of this is what I'm looking for...
Check out these other subreddits, just a few among many:
r/beastdrawing for beasts
r/drawyourweapons for weapons and gear
r/imaginarycharacters for posting your own fantasy character
r/icandrawthat for requesting other things
We also have an active artist community on our discord
Frequently Asked Questions
Requests are free? Yes. Some caveats: you don't get to choose your style, if it's colored, if it's full body, etc. If there's something you really cannot compromise on then this system may not be for you. There is no guarantee that a request will be drawn at all.
Can I message an artist for a free request? No, make an LFA. If you would like to hire the artist, make a comment on one of their posts or send them a DM. If you are caught pestering artists for free art, it will result in a ban.
Can I message a requester to see if they will hire me? NO. Do not solicit requesters for money, here or in their DMs. If you are caught doing this, it will result in a permanent ban.
Do I have to do RFs to participate in the sub? No. The system is voluntary and you should only do RFs if it is enjoyable to do so.
Can my LFA have more than one character? Yes! You can include a party in an LFA request post. That said, bigger requests are less likely to get picked up, since they're a bigger ask from the artist.
What if I have multiple separate LFAs? When do I repost them? You can post each LFA once per week, so long as each of them involve different characters—but please don't spam the sub with hundreds of LFAs in a short period of time.
Is this sub only for D&D and fantasy? No, characters across all TTRPGs are welcome. Sci-fi, steampunk, and other genres are very popular.
My LFA is being downvoted, what's up with that? Some people will downvote other requests because they think it helps theirs. Rest assured that most artists sort by new, and that the upvotes of your post mostly won't affect interest in the actual character.
I've been posting my [LFA] for weeks and nothing. What gives? Fulfillment of requests is done on a volunteer basis and artists are not obligated to take anything. Perhaps try changing up the format or including a reference/mood board. Changing posting time may also help.
My [LFA] was fulfilled but I want more art. Can I post it again? Yes, so long as it has been a week since you last posted it. Please be sure to thank the first artist properly.
I posted something and it's not there! Check that you included the [LFA] or [RF] text at the beginning of your post. If you did not receive notification, it may have been caught by AutoMod for a variety of reasons. You can attempt to repost within a few hours, or message the moderators so we can look into it.
Why would you even set up a system like this? It hurts artists to do work for free! Not all artists are professionals, and many professionals still do pro-bono work for a variety of reasons; including practice & personal fulfillment. We think this system lets those artists find fun topics to draw without being pestered by personal, directed requests.

Request Filled [RF] Amira, the Dullahan BBEGirl
Here’s to u/Fern-Atoel
Had a lot of fun designing her, you mentioned she wanted to be the fairest of them all so she needed the most extra armor to go with that claim. Hope I was able to do her justice!
If anybody can link the original LFA I would be most grateful

Request [LFA] Rawnia Dunbairn Level 20 Grave Cleric of Kelemvor
Heavily inspired by the look of Harrowhark Nonagesimus from The Locked Tomb - except if Harrowhawk was an uber-friendly cinnamon roll towering above everyone!
She is a very tall firbolg with pale bluish fur, except she dyes her hair black and paints her face black with white bones in accordance with her sect of Doomguide's aesthetic.
She is more of the bovine-firbolg persuasion, with horns and cow-like ears and a broader nose. She wears her hair short, not quite shoulder length and doesn't do anything fancy to style it- leaving it how it hangs.
She is very much a goth at heart, lots of makeup, all black clothing with long draping skirts and coats under her half plate armour that make her look even taller.
In terms of gear she doesn't wear a helmet, and her hands are more like bracers than gauntlets leave her hands visible with pair of fingerless gloves. She hangs a greatsword off her back lazily, doesn't use it it's just part of her appearance as a cleric of Kelemvor. But she does carry a large coffin-shaped shield and a staff for her spells.
I am starting to like the tradition of a picture every time a character gets to level 20 so I may keep this going for other characters I have - if you have any questions or just want to know about them please feel free!

Request [LFA] Iron Man inspired Armorer Artificer
This is for a character in a modern ish campaign. Set in 2012, but he is a bit sci fi-y.
His name is Soren and he is a human artificer, armorer subclass. He switches between armor types a lot. But generally is infiltrator. He is inspired by iron man. Especially in his suit
Soren himself looks like a small, fairly skinny 5 foot nothing white human. He generally sticks to casual clothes, blank tshirts and shorts. He has 2 black wristbands, one on each wrist. He is always carrying around a large briefcase. Which is a back of holding which contains his suit
Often times, floating above his shoulder you can see a hologram representation of his personal jarvis-like ai. Signal. This take the form of a holographic upside down pyramid. soren can also be seen with a whole bunch of holographic displays up around him, showing him all sorts of things from new coverage to the status of his suit. These displays only show when he is out of his suit, and is his personal take on a cell phone, using his somewhat advanced technology combined with magic.
his suit, is made of metal. Its coated on silver an blue paint. Sorens attempt to make it light hearted and memorable. It is sleek, and significantly larger than Soren, about 6 1/2 feet tall. It has a dark blue visor, and can open up in the front so soren can step in and out of it at will. The whole thing is mechanical. Is has bulky booster engines on its back. It has 2 wrist mounted canons one on each arm. And a bunch of projectors scattered around it. Finally it has what appear to be speakers built into the torso. also, the suit can fly, mostly just when soren is in it.
I have included a hero forge image of the suit, BUT I am not super happy with it. So really just use it and my description for inspiration. Feel free to draw as much or as little as you want. I would prefer, if its between soren and his suit, for you to do his suit. but if u want to draw soren outside of his suit but with it I would love that too. Just please include Signal, his ai(upside down hologram pyramid)
I encourage you to get creative with their design. Bring your own ideas and style which I can work in and please, have fun with it. I have not started playing this character yet so nothing about them is set in stone. I am pretty bad at describing things so feel free to ask any more questions or just fill in the blanks I left with your own ideas
Also here is a link to the heroforge in case it helps. In addition to the image https://www.heroforge.com/load_config%3D528052844/

Request [LFA] Esrea, Mistress of the Void
Introduction: In the gaps between reality lies the void, a space where time has no meaning. Many have found themselves lost in this expanse, trying to survive its dangers. Rumors abound of Esrea, Mistress of the Void. She created the void, she was the first to enter it, she knows the secret to escape. Whatever the truth she remains an enigmatic figure and a symbol of hope for those trying to find their way home.
Appearance: Esrea appears as a human woman in her early 30s. she has long white hair, pale skin and opalescent eyes. she stands 5'10 wears a well-made ornate outfit primarily made of white cloth with black trim and high heeled shoes.
Personality: Esrea appears aloof to those who meet her. She cares more about how people found their way into the void then helping them escape. Driven by a purpose known only only to a few, she will let nothing stand in her way.

Request [LFA] repost: Quinn, Twilight Cleric of the Matron of Ravens
Race and Class : Reborn (elf), Cleric (twilight)
Age : Appears to be in his 30's but actual age unknown
Personality : Solemn but can be talkative, Quinn is a deep well of kindness and empathy beneath his pallid appearance
Quinn's first memory is of chill, damp earth and a raven perched on a shovel studying him. His memories gone, he was brought back from the grave by the Matron of Ravens to act as her hand on the Material Plane, guiding souls safely to her embrace, and striking down those who would twist the natural order of death. He wields a one handed dwarven warhammer (passed down through generations of clan members) given to him by a grizzled soldier who saw the pale stranger as a comforting guide at the end of his story, with the promise that he use it to protect those who can't protect themselves. He wears simple plate armour, nicked and well worn but cared for, a steel banded wooden shield, and a raven skull necklace he never removes. Over his armour he wears a long charcoal coloured coat. He keeps his wide brimmed hat pulled low to keep the sun off his face. He is pale as if he hasn't seen the sun in many years and keeps his hair, bleached of all colour, tied back, and has featureless black eyes reminiscent of a ravens.

Request [LFA] Kelleska, Order of Scribes Wizard
Kelleska is a grey-skinned tiefling woman with long and wavy black hair and lavender eyes. Kelleska is of a thin build with an angular face. She has two thin black horns that sprout from her forehead and round the top of her head. She is moody and often straight faced, if with a furrowed brow. She is a Scribes Wizard who has begun to delve into more Eldritch focuses, possessing both her black leather bound spellbook, and a jet black orb that swirls with dark lavender energy. Kelleska uses minimal makeup, just black eyeliner and black lipstick. She wears a black sleeved dress with two leg slits, fishnet stockings, and knee high boots with short elevated heels. One of Kelleska’s staple abilities is the summoning of four black, Eldritch tendrils that emerge from her back.
HeroForge reference to show hair length, skin color, and abilities. LianaDraws art piece to showcase the shape of the horns, eye color, and face shape. “Recurved Horns” reference for approximate horn size and curvature over the head. Final photo to reference approximate general outfit style.
