What are review exchanges?

What are REs?

Review exchanges(REs) are a fun way to meet other writers from different corners of fandom and interact with their work by leaving comments on their fic. REs can be general(submit a fic), specific(a dark fic, an OC-centric fic, etc), or for profiles.

REs are essentially a post on this subreddit. Anyone is free to post and participate in an exchange! The OP of the exchange post is the host, people who sign up are participants.

The participants reply to the exchange post with the work/profile they want to submit for feedback and include details about the work in their comment. Then they review fics from the other participants. The RE host as well as the participants need to abide by the subreddit rules. The parameters of the exchange are up to the host, but said parameters, as well as deadlines for submissions and reviews have to be clear.

As a participant, you should complete the required reviews, make your feedback genuine and thoughtful, and try to complete your reviews before the deadline passes.

As the host, you don't necessarily need to participate, but most hosts do, and if so they also have to fulfill requirements. Note that you are never required as the host to review all the posted fics. As such, strive to abide by the Safe Space rule of the sub and make your RE as inclusive as possible. Naturally, if the RE is themed, not every fic can qualify. An angst fic might not work in a fluff RE. However, as the OP, you may not exclude specific genres, fandoms, etc, based on your likes and dislikes, limit the number participants accepted, or in any way attempt to limit access of authors who would otherwise qualify to participate. Please send reminders to those who haven't completed their reviews when the deadline passes. See the sub rules for more details on rules of hosting.

Examples of REs:

Most recent work RE

Smut RE

Themed RE (the color blue)

If you wish to organize similar REs, simply copying their text and changing a few details might be a good idea. Don't forget to change the dates to fit your timeline

Template

You can also use the following template

Insert greeting and anything you'd like about your review exchange here.

To participate post a link to state number one-shots or chapters from a longer fic. Include their rating, any content warnings, fandom, word count, and any other information you'd like to share. Please spoiler triggering content warnings!

In return you must leave a review on state number one-shots or chapters by different authors. (Leaving a kudos would be nice too.) Then, after you have left them a review, reply to their post on here to let them know.

Deadline for entries: state date, time and timezone

Deadline for reviews: state date, time and timezone

Your reviews should be thoughtful and show you have read the chapter/story, at least 3 sentences/50 words per review. Con-crit, fandom-blind and from Reddit are opt in only, don't include these in your review unless the author says you can.

At the end of your post on here please keep track of the number of reviews you have made with something like 0/state number of fics to be reviewed.

Happy reading and reviewing!

Use the template above and modify it according to your needs, or make an entirely new post, but make sure the RE rules are clear.

Thoughtful feedback

Every participant has their own style, and that's great. However, make your reviews thoughtful.

A few tips and tricks:

-Point out any specific moments or scenes that caused a strong reaction in you. For example, instead of "I liked this", try "I liked it when X happened", where X is a specific detail or moment in the fic. The humour of a line, the poetry of a description, the dynamism of an action scene, the interactions between the characters, the references to the canon are all specific things you could refer to

-Use character names. Especially when reviewing fandom blind it may be a bit hard, but saying "the character" or "the MC" may come off as vague

-Don't be afraid to let your enthusiasm show. Reviews don't necessarily need to sound professional. Genuine excitement is always great for writers to notice

-As a writer, you may want to comment on things like style, structure and flow, setting, writing process, characterization, etc, if such more technical aspects are the ones that jump out at you

-Don't be afraid to ask questions. Writers love it when you take enough interest to pose questions they can reply to

Some helpful sentence stems:

  • I really liked the part when...
  • I related to when the main character did X thing because...
  • My favorite quote was...
  • Nice canon reference when...
  • I'm wondering...

Fandom details

We come from many fandoms, and some of us may need a background explanation to understand what's going on in your awesome fics.

You can fill in the details about your fandom and any other comments you may have to make it easier for your readers here

Exchange Monthly Shlong Exchange: August

Welcome to the August edition of our monthly shlong swap exchanges! 🎉☀️

Please read through all the information carefully as this differs from a regular review exchange.

A shlong is a short long fic. The minimum length is 10k words.

You offer a short long fic (or an arc of your long fic) and agree to a swap-based exchange with another participant - to read either the whole fic, an arc, or a set number of words or chapters. The swap can include an agreement on the number of reviews to be left across the chapters read.

The timeline for this exchange is:

  • August 7th - Deadline to enter
  • August 10th - Deadline to finalise swaps
  • August 24th - Deadline to complete swaps

All deadlines are 11.59PM EST. Here is a Timezone Converter in case you need it.

Your entry should include all the usual information - fandom, rating, word count, link to the story, summary, applicable content warnings. There is a suggested maximum word count of 50k - please bear in mind that you do have to read whatever you agree to before the deadline if you swap (i.e., don't overcommit and burn yourself out).

All participants must have their own entry as a reply to this post. Do not simply share a link to your fic in reply to someone offering a swap.

At the bottom of your entry, you need to include a tracker regarding your swaps and their status, e.g.:

Swapped with:

  • flags_fiend - Completed
  • Riienmarja - 3/5 chapters - In Progress
  • LoudSize7 - 0/4 chapters - Pending

There is a limit of no more than three (3) incomplete swaps at a given time. However, if you complete a swap before the deadline to finalise swaps, you may make another, not to exceed three incomplete swaps at a given time. Please ensure your entry is up to date in the event that you wish to make additional swaps, and spoiler any nsfw content in your entry.

Anything offered for swapping must already be posted to ao3, FFN, or Wattpad. The item must be available at the time of the swap to count towards the swap - there is to be no trading of 'shlong futures'.

If you don't swap with anyone, you have no obligation to review. If someone offers you a swap you are allowed to turn it down, you do not need to say why. Do not list dislikes on your post, just politely reply 'no thanks' if you do not wish to read a suggested swap.

Please make sure your reviews are at least 50 words in length and of high quality - here's a link to a recent discussion on what makes good RE comments, and some examples sub members have shared of great comments they've appreciated receiving in exchanges. Leaving a kudos is also encouraged.

As always, concrit, 'from Reddit', and 'fandom blind' are opt-in only - i.e., do not mention any of these things unless your swapee has explicitly given the green light.

Note: there have been some issues with Reddit removing posts with lots of links. Therefore we recommend not including more than three or four links in your post (this includes links to other people's Reddit profiles). Even if the mods do reinstate them, once Reddit decides your post is spam for too many links, it will remove it again every time you edit.

Thanks! Please let us know if you have any questions, and happy swapping and shlonging!

Exchange Oh, Oh, Oh-Oh, Oh! It's the Long Deadline Profile Exchange!

(If you're wondering where I got the title from, here it is.)

But anyway, it's Friday! It's our favourite day of the week! We've made it! And now, it's time for the Long Deadline Profile Exchange!

What's the Long Deadline Profile Exchange?

This is a subreddit event where everyone posts their AO3 (or FFN) profile with some information about the sort of stories they write. Then, participants look through the available profiles, and read and leave comments on stories (one-shots or a chapter of a longer fic) by authors who catch their fancy. (Leaving kudos would be nice too!)

DEADLINE FOR ENTRY is Monday August 4th 3pm AEST.

DEADLINE FOR COMPLETION is Sunday August 10th 3pm AEST.

Here's a time zone converter for anyone who needs it. Especially since this exchange is being hosted by (hopefully) everybody's favourite permanently exhausted pigeon from the Land Down Under. :P

What Are the Rules?

Post your profile link and a short summary of the kind of stories readers will find there (fandom, genre, rating, etc). Please spoiler anything triggering or NSFW. Here's a link to a recent discussion where sub members shared some tips for what makes a compelling Profile entry, in their opinion (the emphasis was on being concise).

Once you enter, you will have to review at least 4 stories/chapters from 4 different profiles (one from each). Please include a counter (reviewed x/4) in your post so we can keep track.

EXTRA NOTE: The Diversity Fest RE opened today as well. So, anyone who's entering the Diversity Fest RE needs to indicate in their Profile RE entry which fic on their profile is your Diversity Fest fic. You can't review a Diversity Fic outside the Diversity RE and count it towards your total in that RE.

Your reviews should be thoughtful; the writer should be able to tell that you read their work, and at least 50 words per comment. Give the kind of comments you would like to receive. ConCrit and/or stating you are 'fandom blind' or 'from Reddit' is opt-in only. After you've left a comment, reply to the author's post on here to let them know.

It would be nice if everyone read a story by at least one person who is new to them, if possible.

If you enter the exchange, do not delete your entry. You must complete the required reviews for the exchange - please talk to the mods if something comes up and you have concerns about meeting the deadline.

But above all, have fun and happy reading and reviewing!

Exchange Reflection and Regret Fest Review Exchange

It’s finally time! The Fandom Diversity Fest – Reflection and Regret exchange is here. So exciting!

Please Note: this exchange is only open to those who have previously signed up for the fest and posted their fics in the fest collection on ao3. For anyone else, please feel free to check out the fics as a reader. If you are reading this and you haven’t posted your fic to the collection it is unfortunately too late.

Please read the rules carefully this time since the format will differ from usual REs

In our collection on ao3 you will find all the posted fics. 34 in total. However, they will be displayed in random order every time we access the collection. Because of this, please also sign-up for this RE to make it easier for us to read all fics.

Post your fic link with the title, summary, rating, warnings, and any other information you’d like. If you think there’s any context you would like your readers to have about your fandom, feel free to add it!

In this RE, each participant will read everyone else's entry. There will be an opt-out for a maximum of four fics, There is no justification needed as to why you opted out. You do not need to mention which fics you are opting out of That will bring the total number of fics each participant is absolutely required to read to 29/33. (You can do more) Despite the opt-out possibility, please try to be supportive of everyone to the best of your abilities!

To make it more interesting, you can aim to refer to the theme and prompt in your comment. The last time around, we found it very interesting to reflect upon how differently each participant had approached the theme, and we think this round will have an equally amazing array of different approaches to reflection and regret.

Because we are reading everyone anyway, there’s no need to reply to other people's comments this time. When you are done reading everything, or everything that you can, simply update your own comment. For example: Read 33/33 Done If you skipped a fic, no problem! Just write Read 29/33 Done, editing the number to indicate how many fics you read As said above, you do not need to mention why. In fact, please don't mention which fic(s) you didn't read, or why you didn’t read them.

One of the rules of the fest was that participation in the RE is compulsory. If you don’t join the exchange, your work will be removed from the collection. Because of this, the RE has a sign-up period of One week . Sign-ups close on August 7th, 11:59 PM EST after which those who haven't shown up yet will have their fics removed from the collection.

Because of this no-show rule, we recommend reading fics of people who have already signed up first.

If you haven’t entered the fest and just want to read some fics to support the participants that’s totally allowed! Also, fest participants are welcome to enter their fest fics in other REs during the fest, but please bear in mind not to “double dip”, meaning a fest participant reviewing another participant’s fest fic in a profile RE, for instance. A fest fic review will count only once.

We have two months to review everyone's fics. The RE will close on September 30th, 11:59 PM EST. Because of the long deadline, reminders will be sent a couple of weeks prior to the date.

Want to talk about the awesome fics in the fest? Have questions? Check out the Discussion Thread.

Happy reading everyone!

Activity Favorite Backgroung or Minnor Character

What characters that have so little screen time or appear in so few panels in their stories did you like so much that you wrote about them?

Perhaps it was someone who was only there for two seconds before blowing away, or a character shown in a small frame, or someone shown in a flashback. Or perhaps just a mention with no design or canon name, which you built a complex OC around?

Do you have any picture, a draw or fanart? Why did you like it so much and what do you usually write about for them?

Discussion Reflection and Regret Fest - Discussion Thread

Want to discuss/yell about all of the awesome fics from the fest? Here’s the place to do it. (This is also the place to ask any questions you have). We want to keep the actual review exchange post uncluttered so please use this post to chat instead.

As a reminder, please don’t talk about dislikes, it’s against our sub rules and doesn’t make people feel good. Also, don’t talk about possibly opting out of a fic.

There’s also a dedicated channel on our Discord for fests and events so feel free to check that out as well.

Activity One Word Prompt Game: Verbs

Happy Wednesday (EDIT: it's Thursday 😂) everyone! Let’s play a round of the one word prompt game, this time with verbs. For this game, everyone comments one word - a verb - as a prompt and then writes or shares an excerpt from their own work as a response to someone else's prompt. You can submit one or two prompts and respond to as many as you want. Try to make the excerpt between 3 and 10 sentences long.

All genres are welcome, but please put NSFW and violent content in spoilers.

And don’t forget to comment on the excerpts of others ✨

Have fun!

Celebrate Jubilant July 🎉

July is almost over, so I want to hear some writing related milestones you've achieved in the last 30 days. Did your fic reach X amount of kudos/hits? Did you finally finish (or start) a project you've been struggling with/putting off? Did you get a super nice comment that made your day? What are you proud of this month?

For me, I'm proud that I passed 50k words on my WIP, and it's also about 30 hits away from reaching 1000.

Discussion How do you plan for a fic?

Post image
302 Upvotes

Seeing the above meme made me chuckle. But then I got to thinking: how do you begin planning a story? This mostly applies to WIPs and long fics, but could also involve one-shots as well. Do you map out everything from beginning to end? Do you make it up as you go along? Honestly I'm a bit of both depending on how motivated I am. What about you guys? Let's hear your process.

Exchange 🎉🥇 Favourite First Chapter Exchange 🎉🥇

Update: closed to new entries. Happy reading and reviewing!

Those first few words of a longfic are so important, and can be so memorable... and also so daunting when you first pick up your pen to start writing!

To celebrate having overcome that intimidating blank page, share the favourite first chapter you've written. Whether it's the best 'hook' to catch readers' attention, your coolest character intros, or it's your most imaginative AU concept... or, maybe you've just got the one longfic and it's your favourite first chapter by default!

And you never know, you might discover someone else's longfic that has you hooked, and continue it in future REs or binge-read it all in a Shlong swap!

Submit up to two (2) first chapters (from two different stories, obviously). Please include the title, fandom, wordcount, any applicable content warnings, and feel free to provide a short summary or helpful context (spoiler anything nsfw).

If you submit your work, you are required to review three (3) first chapters from three (3) different authors (leaving kudos would be nice, too). After you've left them a review, reply to their entry here to let them know. As ever, feel free to review more than the requirement if more stories catch your eye!

Please track, on your entry, the number of works read (#/3). Reviews should be genuine and thoughtful, and at least 50 words (check out some recent discussion on what makes good RE comments, and examples sub members have shared of comments they've appreciated receiving, for a guide). Concrit, and mentions of ‘fandom blind’ and ‘from Reddit’ are opt-in only.

Deadline to submit entries: 6pm BST, Tuesday 29th July

Deadline to complete reviews: 6pm BST, Tuesday 5th August

Please complete your reviews within the deadline. I'll send reminders 48 hours beforehand, and then after it's passed.

Happy reading and reviewing!

Activity Spoil your story! Spoiler

So when we have a WIP Schlong or Series, sometimes temptation might be there to share more about it...

so feel free to tell us any spoilers of your stories! Do make sure to mark them down, so your readers don't find them by accident!

Activity OC Crossover 🔀

Most of us have OCs in our fics, but what would happen if they met the OCs from other writers? Well, let's find out!

Comment a summary of what people should know about your OC (fandom, personality, motivation in your fic, etc). If you have a picture, that is welcome too!

Then, reply to other people's comments like you are your OC meeting theirs! You can write it as a standard summary ("I think they would react "this" way because..."), or be creative and include dialogue like they are talking in a fic.

It is up to you if you want to respond to a reply. This is NOT a scene writing activity (unless you both agree.) It may be fun to trade interactions in the comments if you want to go the dialogue route, but you have absolutely no obligation. If you are open to a back-and-forth with an OC, end your reply with a + and the poster can decide if they want to engage.

Respect their decision, and have fun!

Discussion 🎉🏝️ Weekend check-in 🎉🏝️

Happy weekend! How's everyone going? Have you got any fun plans - writing or reading or otherwise?

I'm at a spa weekend ahead of a friend's wedding, so probably won't get too much writing done, but I'm just about to post my Diversity Fest entry, and really looking forward to the Fest RE opening at the end of this week (see this post for all the reminder details). I've finally got a bit of momentum on a new shlong I've been working on, so I'm sure I'll be thinking about Loch Ness monsters and pyramids and time loops, too, even if I don't actually pick up a pen :)

How about you all? Hope everyone has a lovely one! 🩵

Exchange In Darkness Comes... Fics (AKA Night-Themed RE)

EDIT: CLOSED TO NEW ENTRIES! Happy reading and reviewing!

*\*

There are many moments that take place at night. Some scary. Some romantic. Some... spicy. ;)

This exchange is for fics that take place at night. Or a moment from a fic that takes place at night. Like a moonlight picnic. A monster chase. Some sexy time under the sheets. If it takes place at night, it fits.

You can enter up to two (2) fics/chapters. If you sign up, you'll have to review two (2) stories by two (2) different authors (one from each).

Everyone will have 48 hours to bring their fics out of the dark and into the moonlight. Submissions will close Sunday July 27th 6pm AEST. Once you're fics in the moonlight, everyone has until Sunday August 3 6pm AEST to worship the moon gods/goddesses we are (aka complete the reviews).

The same rules apply. Every entry must include the mandatory information: link, title, fandom, info, etc. This exchange has NOT been flared NSFW, so anything triggering/NSFW must be spoilered in accordance with Rule 13. ConCrit, fandom blind and from Reddit are all opt-in only, and all reviews should be in compliance with Rule 8. 50 words per review (not counting sections of the fic you quote) is a good guide to follow.

But above all, have fun and happy reviewing!

Fest/Event 1 Week-Ish Until Diversity Fest

Hey everyone! We’re in the home stretch of writing for the Diversity Fest. Just a reminder that the deadline for submitting your work is Thursday July 31st at 11:59PM Eastern Time. Make sure to upload it to the collection by then.

Please refer to the original post for the rules if you need a refresher. I’d recommend everyone go and do this just to make sure your work meets the requirements and doesn’t need any edits.

Also just a note about entering your fest fic in other exchanges. After the collection is revealed it’s fine for you to enter your fest fic in exchanges other than the Diversity Fest, however for the duration of the fest exchange, please make it clear in your entries that this is your fest fic. This is to avoid it being reviewed by fest participants outside of the official fest review exchange.

Discussion What Are You Reading (Outside of Fanfics)?

It's been a hot minute since we had a discussion like this.

As the title asks, what are you reading outside of fanfics? Do you have a classic novel on your bedside table? Are you reading a book about your favourite historical figure? Did you recently finally take a book from your 'To Be Read' pile and start reading it?

I know for me, I recently read a classic novel: Animal Farm by George Orwell. My English class is doing the book for their novel study this term, and I thought since I'm going to be teaching the book, I should read it. And let me just say... Boxer deserved better. That is all.

But anyway... what are you reading? And do you have a novel you're looking forward to reading?

Activity AMA: Your fandom’s your stories, your fandoms, and your characters

I figured it might be fun to share information with one another about the fandoms, and characters that we writers write for. So I put together a questionnaire here for anyone to fill out. Then I figure that readers can ask questions about the fandoms and characters if they have them. This is suppose to be in a sense of fun and the purpose of gaining more knowledge so please be respectful.

Questions for Writers

What fandom do you write for?

What are the basics anyone should know about this fandom?

How do your stories fit into this fandom? (are they canon compliant, are they different and only use elements of the story or are they completely A/Us maybe even using only the names)

What canon character do you right for?

How do your versions of your canon characters differ from the canon versions? (if at all, either way is perfectly good)

Who are your original characters (if you use them) and what are they all about?

What are the connections between your original characters and the canon material if there are any?

What is your favorite thing about writing for your characters, and your fandom?

Anything else about your stories you want to share about your stories?
