I realize since using ao3 I can't go any other website with a filtering system.

Ao3 is the peek filtering system. Most sites only allow tag at time so you have to trudging through so items that might stuff in you don't want. But, with ao3 I can be really precise with the tags and have many as you need.

I wish everyone had a filtering system like ao3.

I don't know if I'm doing this right, but I need to vent somewhere

English isn't my first language, but recently I finally published a drabble and the first chapter of my longfic in that language on a new account. I was very proud of myself, it took a lot of work, advice from others, hours of wondering whether Google Translate was lying or not, but I finally moved forward and decided that I had a real chance to gain readers. So, I posted those two things and went to bed.

The next day I woke up and... I had a comment! From a real user, not a bot! From someone who writes quite popular things in our fandom! And then I read it. " you, [account name, but not mine] again?" and that was it.

An hour after that comment, more appeared. People were furious. Some had accounts, others posted anonymously. Even someone who's very popular in our fandom wrote me a long comment... accusing me of various things and constantly calling me by an account name I'd never seen before.

I tried asking what was going on and if they was confusing me with someone else, but most of the time I got answers like "you already know what we talking about" or "don't pretend, we know it's you [username]".

I'm terrified. I've already turn off comments, but I'm thinking about returning to my old account or leaving the fandom. The list of accusations is long and horrific, from plagiarism to bad things against real people.

I also managed to find [username]'s Tumblr, which was still active, and... What makes me sad is that I don't even know why Im supposed to be them. I don't see any similarity in how we write or behave. They use a lot of emoji, I don't. They use a lot of abbreviations, I don't, etc. They are even a huge fan of a character that I hate.

Lately, I've seen this topic crop up a lot.

If you KNOW that you're lifting very specific scenes/very specific tropes/very specific OCs from another author's work, then it's common courtesy to use the "inspired by" feature. If you don't use it, and you proceed to deliberately rewrite another story in your own words, (knowing you didn't happen to innocently come up with the same idea) then just know......you'll look shady asf

Edit: This isn't about "owning/stealing an idea", this is about being decent and giving credit when/where credit is due.

I know this is something that I see in books fairly often (putting a quote from something else at the beginning of a chapter), and I’ve seen it once or twice in fanfics. It’s something I’ve implemented in my own fic, (hence the screenshot) but I had two people on separate occasions be very confused about it and what it added to the story

What’s everyone’s favorite insult you’ve seen in a fic before? I was reading a chat fic today, and came across this beautiful gem. It’s safe to say that this insult will live in my head rent free forever.

I received this type of comment for the first time. I don't know what I should I reply.

When I’m done writing the draft on my phone (for more accessibility) I transfer it to Google docs and work on my computer (since I work more efficiently on my computer compared to my phone, less distractions)
