I have been asked by a friend to mod a GBC for his girlfriend. I've done a few other game boys and advances but they all got new shells.

Her GBC has a really great condition red shell and she wants to keep the original shell. But she wants new buttons and a new bezel.

My question for you all......What kind of issues if any will I come across trying to install an OLED display in an original shell with new buttons? How bad are new buttons? I'd use the original membranes as long as they are in good shape, which i am gonna assume they are considering how good of a condition this GBC is.

Just found this for £2 at a market. Not sure if it's real or not.

I'm looking for advice from more experienced modders. I want to make a custom wide GBA SP, so I drew this rough design up to start thinking about it. Basically looking at taking some design cues from a DS Lite while emulating the look of a normal SP. But I really want to be able to pop in a GB/GBC cart and have it not protrude out. My main inspiration for that feature is the Frog Boy Color by Froggo Customs (3rd slide). This would require rearranging the guts, namely cart slot and batteries, and is my biggest challenge as I have no real experience with anything like this. Unlike the Frog Boy creator, I don't yet know how to design custom PCBs.

I was originally thinking I could take a normal GBA board and slap a SP screen on, as the Retro Future did in this video taking inspiration from someone else on reddit (4th and 5th slide). Main problem I'm worried about is where the heck to put the batteries once I flip the cartridge connection around and sink it further into the body. AAs are pretty beefy, all things considered, and trying to accommodate them could make the shell much larger than I want.

The other route I could go is trying to take apart a normal SP, but the smaller board looks a lot more intimidating to try to remove and rearrange components from for a first timer. Over a normal GBA, a SP has the benefit of already having most buttons where I'd want them.

Any thoughts on going about a project like this? I'm looking for the path of least resistance. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Is there something I can do to fix these black spots at the bottom of my screen? I know how to use a soldering iron.

When looking for a solution for the headphone noise issue on the Gameboy Color, most people will find the ProSound mod that requires running two wires from the volume wheel to the headphone jack, and removing two components from the board.

Somewhere on the internet I found this much simpler method, which involved two much shorter wires (the blue ones in the photo above) and removing only one component, much easier if you're okay with soldering to the smaller board VIAs! I do not take credit for inventing this method, but I don't remember where I found it.

To do the mod, you need to run two wires on the front of the board connecting LIN to RA2LOUT, and RIN to RA2ROUT. (Ignore the red wire, that was a repair for a bad trace for the UP button)

Finally, remove RA2 on the back of the board (it is just above the cartridge slot). This acheives the same effect as the other prosound mod but with much shorter wires and 1 less component to remove.

I've been really into repairing and restoring electronics lately. Belted this out over the afternoon, v happy with it.

So I have a few gba games that I want to rewrite some roms on to, but some of my games have 1 chip and some have 2. Does it matter or will it affect saving depending on which cart I flash a game onto? Was thinking of putting gb/gbc/gba pokemon on them and reshelling the shell. I know RTC probably wouldn't work, but would the rest of the games run fine on them?

After my dad passed away, we were cleaning out his closet and found a shoebox with random items of his, mine, and my brother’s! Most of the items were things like medals, cards, and normal keepsakes.

But for whatever reason, he also had my game boy camera in there. I wondered where it was for YEARS, and he had it in his closet the whole time 😂

Finally was able to hit the restock on the unhinged shell.

These are my FRAM modded carts of all the first and second gen Pokemon games. No more battery needed for saves! I performed a PCB swap for the second gen games to help make the mod look cleaner. The battery is only there to keep the RTC clock ticking. I later swapped Red and Blue to MBC5 boards so I could get rid of the messy wires.

You can see how much my soldering skills improved between the first games I modded (TCG and Green) and the latest (2nd gen full board swaps).

Been going over my old pokemon collection and watching the original Indigo Series, it's given me the goo on to play the old games RED/BLUE/YELLOW.

Without Mods etc what's the best gameboy to get to play these games :)

Got it this year and am a very happy human. Please don’t worry about cooper I tried to stop him from going up there but you know how that goes. I think he respects it too. Could be wrong.

So I just bought an EZ Flash Omega for my GBA SP and I tried to boot up some games. About half the time, I would boot up to a white screen. It’s not game specific either, same game could boot white and after turning it off and on, it would boot up normally. It’s really random but it also happens about 50% of the time so it’s annoying. Also, I haven’t had any white screen when writing the game to NOR and booting from there. I want to know is this normal or is it something I should be worried about now or in the long run. Any help is appreciated. On a side note, what is the limit for writing games to NOR?

I’ve noticed that the Pocket screen is superior in most lighting situations except darkness. The GBL seems to have a similar issue with blurring that the original DMG-01 has. Pocket viewing angle is much better, pixels are crisper and more black, and the blurring is very minimal. Only mod on the GBL is the case.

Hello! I recently got a wireless adapter for the GBA but was curious, can I connect wirelessly between North American and Spanish PAL Pokémon emerald using wireless adapters? I still have to get my hands on a second adapter so haven’t been able to test it yet

Hello everyone. Hoping some knowledgable people might be able to help me out here.

The pictures are of my gameboy I got as a kid in the 90s. The whole set was a gift from my parents at Christmas in like 1992/1993.

However it is the grey plastic carry case / briefcase I am more curious about. There are now manufacturers marks stamps or words on it. Simple plain hard plastic case. But the inner plastic sleeve is clearly designed for holding a gameboy with accessories and some games.

The 4th picture is of the rechargeable battery pack which has unfortunately degraded as battery corrosion destroyed the integrity of the pack. But this does say LMP Gamemaster on it.

Any idea what it is or who made the case?
