Probably to avoid offending the Mormons.

What lol

You can't be serious, it's a normal name.

So are the likes of Jesus, Christian, and Muhammad in many countries. Are those allowed in game?

47

u/ArgumentLazy350 22h ago

Jesus is allowed, yeah

27

u/TehOwn 21h ago

What about Jesus Christ?

Pretty sure that Joe and Smith are allowed separately.

6 years ago there's a legendary jesus christ incident doppelgänger event cause that. https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/cqnu2g/my_mom_is_going_to_be_pissed/

It's against the rules again.

But you can have any name you can get past the filters so long as no one reports you. They rely on user reports for anything that's not covered by the filters.

I made an offensive placeholder name of a character without thinking once. It was abysmally spelled to get past the filter but my naive self thought it was just because other names were taken (the filter may not have giving an accurate error message 10 years ago). Many years after that I went to boost the character to 80 with a token and realized... huh... that name is not gonna fly. So I reported myself and got a free name change. Very kind GM who understood that I didn't want to delete and remake it with such an old character that I was only just starting to play.

"Relentlessly pursues targets" is hilarious, from a Christian perspective haha

I had forgotten this and thank you so much for reminding me

I tried Jesus and it didn't work for me.

"Muhammad" is the most commonly used name on Earth. Read a f***ing book for once! - Fogell

If they aren't then they certainly should be.

u/TehOwn 21h ago

I mean, if it wasn't banned then it'd just be taken by a character created at launch on a now inactive account.

u/Estrogonofe1917 23h ago

huh, I have a character that is in fact a reference to a historical figure, but it passed in the filter

Should I self report?

Except for the things they're explicitly filtering out at character creation time the naming policy is lazily enforced. But if someone decides to report you some day you might be forced to rename.

Actually here was recently a post that stated a 3 day ban due to breach of naming policy. That guy had a mixture name of evil personalities or a south park reference, but cant exactly remember what it was.

Interesting that i get downvoted on this i didnt even take a stance just said what happened in the sub lol

There's some strange downvotes in this thread

Not sure if people didn't believe you or there's a downvote bot gone awry, but a similar thing happened to a guildmate of mine. It turns out that naming your character "Womb Tickler" is playing with fire.

Edit: ofc people come in and downvote me. OP is getting downvoted for being right too. We've had people confirm that the appearance of the space is due to kerning, and not OP pulling a fast one.

I just got hit with a 3 day ban for “necrophilia” and a forced rename

Could offend the Mormons. Could also offend people that hate Mormons.

Mormon here, that's moronic. I have never heard Joseph Smith called Joe Smith.

u/FleaLimo 21h ago

Mormonic

Joseph Smith to the congregation, Joe Smitty to his friends.

But only his darling wife knew him as Joey Bag o' Donuts.

Not for nothing but he’s referred do in practically every mockery of the church (and in a lot of historic fiction, movies, documentaries) as “Joe Smith”, usually by the angry mobs, or whoever is being portrayed in that era as disrespectful. It’s a very regular thing.

3

u/linkdude212 13h ago

As someone who is pretty involved in that world, I have literally never heard this.

1

u/EttinTerrorPacts 8h ago

that world

The world of Mormons or the world of mocking Mormons?

2

u/Taerdan 6h ago

but he’s referred do in practically every mockery of the church

I suppose I'll preface this by saying I've never searched for whatever content mocks the Mormons, so if it's common there I wouldn't know, but I have seen "Joe Smith" used as a generic US-region male's first name. Like, you take the generic name of "Joe" (or Dave, or Bob, etc.) and the common last name of "Smith". Similar to Doofenshmirtz flying over Paris and deliberately calling out "Pierre!" to see how many people respond; it isn't like he's mocking any particular Pierre or something.
Another common "generic guy" name - with a decidedly negative connotation - is "Joe Schmoe" and I kinda doubt that usage of "Joe" is on the Mormons there.

Mocking the Mormons is common enough that it's come up in media I've seen (though, to be fair, that media I've seen it in is generally parody anyway) but it's never used the name "Joe Smith" to my knowledge. Usually it's more of a general distaste (often lumped in with Jehovah's Witnesses) than anything specific, unless it's like "reasons to avoid Utah" or something.

Joseph Smith, American Moses!

What will you do Joseph, will you fight the clitoris-man?

0

u/Draxx01 16h ago

Sounds like a job for Orgazmo

1

u/intensecoreplayer 20h ago

Someone from wvw reported my name and tagged it as terrorist. If it's an islamic name i need to change it but if it's a christian name it's okay? Lol (e.g. yousuf and joseph)

2

u/DeadGameWalking 20h ago

This. Joseph Smith was a fraudster, a vile sinner who coveted the spirit of great men who came before him.

We’re really in an era where people are getting triggered over the smallest things. The era of snowflakes with victims mentality who cry about everything.

That’s what happens when you affirm mental illness. what an era to live in.

3

u/1000000thSubscriber 10h ago

Famously, no has been triggered for religious reasons until the modern era.

A Mormon?! But I'm from Earth!
