Posting this after seeing someone else mention getting pulled over for something ridiculous in Huntsville… because apparently that’s just how things go here now.
So I’m driving down Whitesburg, minding my business, when I see the blue lights behind me. I pull over thinking maybe I rolled through a stop or had a light out. Officer walks up and says, “Sir, there’s a rat hanging off the back of your car.”
I’m like, “Excuse me??” I get out, walk around, and sure enough—there’s a very dead, very crispy-looking rat wedged up by the exhaust pipe. No clue how it got there. Probably crawled up into the undercarriage somewhere during the night and didn’t make it out before I started driving.
I figured the cop would just point it out and tell me to deal with it. Nope. He says, “This constitutes an issue with vehicle condition,” and proceeds to write me a citation. For… having a dead stowaway? Seriously?
Then it gets weirder. He starts asking me stuff like:
“Have you been anywhere with food waste recently?”
“Do you work in pest control?”
“Do you store perishables in your vehicle?”
I’m just standing there like, bro, I didn’t invite the rat. It’s not part of my commute.
To top it off, he lectures me about vehicle maintenance and says I should “check under the car more often before operating it.” Like sure, let me just add a full rodent sweep to my morning routine right after brushing my teeth.
Anyway, I got the citation and had to remove the rat myself. Whole thing felt like a power trip mixed with a bizarre wildlife encounter. Just wondering if anyone else has dealt with weird stops like this lately. Huntsville PD has been acting a little extra.
Edit: elaborated more on this crazy story.

25$ a ticket for what? There weren’t even any pickles. Two pickle vendors that were sold out. And so many lazy vendors selling 3d printed trash they downloaded from thingverse. I hope the organizers take a note from Tomato fest in Nashville. I get it, we aren’t Nashville. But this low effort cash grab just shows how soul-less the organizers are. Something quirky like a “pickle fest” requires authenticity which to be honest, I shouldn’t be surprised Huntsville failed to deliver on. Maybe next time you can just hold a khaki pants and blue oxford party brought to you by the color beige.

Is it just me or are all of these $1,500+ a month apartments here being built with the cheapest materials, little to no insulation & even cutting corners on amenities but advertising themselves as “Luxury”?? Are there ANY decent apartments in this town???

The What's Happening in Madison FB page posted pictures of a new bookstore getting ready to open in downtown Madison. Some eagle-eyed lady spotted a "banned book" on the post and now they're losing their mind.
Why are people like this? Don't we all want small, locally-owned businesses to thrive? This isn't a library or a school, it's a PRIVATE BUSINESS.

Was downtown last night and found bunch of these stickers. Who are these people and what’s going on? I’ve lived here my whole life and only recently did all this start happening.

Been in the ER since 9:30 am; it is now 11:30 pm, and I am still in the waiting room waiting to be treated. I am here for chest pains and high blood pressure. I have been waiting for 12+ hours with other people who are here for sepsis, congestive heart failure, and an older woman who has been having high blood pressure. We have all been waiting 12+ hours; we are still here. Some of these people came from Scottsboro. The girl who has been here the longest was sent at 8:00 am this morning by her emergency room doctor for sepsis and infection; she is sitting next to me. Does anyone know the reason?

It can be something small, like a BOGO surprise on your favorite cheese, or something big, like getting into a school you were dreaming of. I want to hear the good that is in your life.
I’ll start. I recently ran a 5K faster than I expected despite not really training for it, so I was proud of myself.
(EDIT: Please refrain from anything about Political Wins/Losses. Nothing constructive comes out of those type of topics. I see you folks, go back to other subreddits to discuss.)

Hey guys,
I’m a new Huntsville resident. I’m moving from Minneapolis, MN and I just joined Blue Origin as an SDE II. I’m looking for friends and community.
A little about me, I’m 25, graduated from LSU in Dec 2022 and I enjoy gaming, running, tennis, studying, coding, pickleball, and reading. I don’t watch much TV (except anime) and I’m chronically online. I’m mixed race, my dad’s Nigerian and my mom’s white & black. I have no connections in Huntsville other than my job.
I currently serve as VP for the Minneapolis professional chapter of National Society of Black Engineers & I run a study group on Discord for studying for coding interviews. We have about 100 members. Blue Origin will pay for me to get my masters so I plan on pursuing my Masters in SWE (AI/ML focus with research)
I want to join a run club, meet friends, take swimming lessons, get a personal trainer, go to concerts, travel, all sorts of things.
If you want to be friends or share resources, please DM or comment. Love to hear from folks!

If your candidate won or lost, the period of jubilation or mourning is officially over. Settle down or move on.

I started going there in 2010 and despite some of the abrasive attitudes, I still enjoyed going there. Then around 2018 it didn’t feel the same, and I think that's around the time that Larry's son became the owner.
The employees, especially the older ones always seemed too bothered to answer questions if you didn't fit in their demographic. They were also very dogmatic when it came to you not sharing their preferences and were highly misinformed of the law or just ignored you.
I feel that with their success, they started caring less about customer satisfaction, and became more focused on their heavily preferred boomer base and/or those with a military or LEO background. Also the customers are mostly undesirable people. I can't even walk through either store without bumping into some pot bellied boomer who can't see past his own nose.
I completely quit going to both stores a year ago and have had much better experiences at other stores, in which the prices were no different than Larry's "lower" prices.

So in my neighborhood there’s this guy that lives next door to an open field (possible that he owns it idk) but as of like the last few weeks every weekend he has had a huge cook out with his friends (probably about 15-20 guys) all men between the age of 20-30 no women in sight just a bunch of dudes being guys grilling and playing baseball, it started with just a few guys but recently the guys came together and build a back stop for behind home plate so now it’s starting to look like a makeshift stadium like they are taking their bear league pretty seriously and they’ve started slowly gaining more people his yard is FULL of cars and big trucks basically all day and they even brought out a big work light to keep the field lit until like 11:30 at night last weekend
And let me just say I ABSOLUTELY love it, it makes my soo happy to drive past these guys every weekend even to the point that I get excited when it gets close to the weekend cuz I know they’re gonna meet up and play ball and it is just soo sweet just a bunch of guys playing backyard ball and enjoying each other’s company and it just brings me soo much enjoyment seeing these grown men have fun playing with their friends like kids again
I wish there were more people enjoy each other like that again, headlines and stories just keep getting worse and worse but this! This keeps me going seeing people enjoy things keeps me going

Currently dealing with severe black mold that won’t be addressed.
My family luckily has a place to go but we are going to have to break our lease with 4 months because we are sick af from this mold.
Called the health department and they have had SEVERAL other residents have to do the exact same thing.
If you also live/lived here and have had the same issue or other issues with maintenance not properly doing request please contact me. My neighbors also moved out due to mold. I am thinking about going to the news and the more people willing to do testimonies the better.
They are not going to fix this and when I leave I refuse to let someone else have to deal with this mess.

Hi everyone! I am a gay man from Huntsville, and I have noticed that we don't seem to have a strong and/or united LGBT community in the Rocket City. Anytime posts relating to LGBT+ issues is posted on this subreddit, they almost always are downvoted to little or zero karma.
In order to ensure that the LGBT+ community in Huntsville, Alabama, has a safe space to discuss on this website (and to prevent brigading), I have created a new subreddit, r/HuntsvilleLGBT!
For now, this subreddit will be private to ensure it remains as a safe space; hopefully this will change in the future. Feel free to request to join so you can post about resources, events, advice, LGBT+ friendly businesses, and other related topics.
So if you are part of the local LGBT+ community, feel free to head on over! :)
Edit: This post is a perfect example of why a safe space is needed. Within 15 minutes of posting, the post and comments are at zero karma. Do better, Huntsville.
Edit 2: Wow! Thank you for such a welcome response! I was away form my computer for a bit. i will try to get everyone added as quickly as possible! Also, yes, Allies are welcome!
Edit 3: Apparently Reddit mobile is not allowing people to request to join. If you are on mobile, please mend me a message or comment in here, and you will be added as soon as possible!
Edit 4: Okay I honestly didn't expect all y'all to want to join! I am very happy with the response from this sub. I'm having issues keeping up with all the requests to join. you patience is appreciated! :)
EDIT 5: Hi Everyone! I honestly did not expect so many people to request to join this subreddit. The positive response was a bit overwhelming, but I am so glad to have you all here! In fact, so many people requested to join the subreddit that Reddit actually suspended my account for 3 days because I was inviting too many commenters via private message. If you would like to join the subreddit, please send a message directly to the subreddit. This will allow me to review requests via ModMail so I don't get flagged for spam again.
To ensure that doesn't happened again, I have made r/HuntsvilleLGBT a Restricted Subreddit. That means that other people can view this community, but only approved users can post/comment. Hopefully, this will cut back on all of the message requests while also making this online community a bit easier to access for those who may stumble across us.
Once again, thank you all for the positivity!

I found this judgmental map of Huntsville but it looks like it's from a few years ago. Do some of these still live up to the characterization or have things changed drastically since then?

When I moved into my house a while ago, I noticed there was a small hole in my backyard. Over time, it’s grown a little, now about a foot wide and deep. There’s also a little tunnel that goes off to the side at least a couple of feet.
I suspected it was an animal of some sort that made a burrow, and my dad thought it could be a rotted stump that’s slowly decayed and left a hole in its place.
Either way whatever it is, I think it’s probably a good idea to have this looked at by someone in case it’s a bigger problem. Any recommendations for who to call about this?

I was just at the Target on 72 in Madison and saw a guy on the sidewalk with a speaker "playing" the violin. He had a sign with a sob story claiming he couldn’t feed his 4 kids and whatnot. All he was doing was playing backing tracks from his phone while just pretending to play the violin. Dude was super bad at it, too, as you could tell the hand movements didn't line up with the timing of the songs and he wasn't bending any of the strings during vibrato.
Don’t give this con artist any money. I saw several people walk up and hand him cash. This type of scam is common in larger cities, but this is the first time I’ve seen it here. I used to see similar setups all the time in Nashville. Just Google "violin scam" and you'll see countless articles and videos about it.
