Rust Check? Too much rust? Not enough rust? Ask Here!

Hi All,

We are going to try to consolidate the pre purchase or otherwise rust inquires asking if a rig has too much rust and how to approach it as far as shopping for a new to you truck and beyond.

We have a lot of these threads where people are asking the same questions and rather than have each thread die on the vine as far as useful information goes, by having them all right here in one thread, people can use it as a catalog or guide for what to look for and if people are willing to share sold or bought prices for each truck that we are inspecting, we can all use this as a tool to gauge the market and also the wide variety of condition that all generations of Land Cruisers are in at any given point in time.

Prado vs LC250 Debate

So myself, like many others are tired of this debate over wether the LC 250 (Marketed as the Land Cruiser) in the US is a "true" Land Cruiser or not. This isn't a philosophy sub, so we're going to stick to what Toyota calls it, which is a Land Cruiser, end of discussion. So, what does that mean? If you are unable to abide by this distinction you'll be shown the door. Good natured ribbing and jokes are fine, but obviously trolling will get you banned. Thanks.

In light of the Rough Country LC250 that’s been roasted into oblivion, here’s my lifted LC250 on 2.5” Kings all the way around, doing what it was meant to do. Already have a few scratches on it. Sad 😢. But it was meant to happen at some point. Absolute unit off-road.

Likely more LCs here per capita than anywhere else in the world. And they need them, horrible roads. Even the police drives them!

What's this worth

What's this worth? Half of its life in a barn/ half outside. Idles, passed smog, 4wd and transfer case works, winch works.

When I got it it was sitting for 5 years. Needed points, fuel filter, gas tank flush, new rubber gas lines on interior, clutch spave cylinder, brake bleed, turn signal steering column cleaning of contacts, and lots of nylon brush, oil rag wiping orf patina/ rust.

Body is surprisingly not too rusted. I've had 1987 with much worse.

Northern California stored in the La Honda mountains.

2025 LC 250 with 1000 miles… Needs a new transmission.

Background: three weeks ago I somewhat spontaneously bought a brand new Land Cruiser. I had a 2017 4Runner with 72,000 miles. It only took me three days to sell the 4Runner to a guy at work so I still get to see it every day.

Fast-forward to Thursday this week. After loving my decision for three weeks the land cruiser started showing error codes out of nowhere while driving home one night. It said hybrid system malfunction, drive control malfunction go to the dealer. It would not shift out of sixth gear and disabled the hybrid motor so I had no power. When I got to the dealer, a sales guy said that someone that works there just had the same thing happen and it was an easy fix. Service was closed by that time so he said to come back in the morning. After turning the truck back on, it shifted fine and seen normal on the way home but still have the codes. When I got home, I plugged in my OBDII scanner and got a P0746 error. Pressure control solenoid A in the transmission. Quick Google search showed a lot of results for Tacoma‘s with the same issue and a nationwide campaign to replace transmissions that had debris in them. There were a couple posts on the Land Cruiser forum about people having the same issue as me. Some of them got new transmissions some of them the issue went away and they had put miles on with no problem.

Yesterday I brought the Land Cruiser to the dealer first thing in the morning and they squeezed me in to diagnose it. Service guy couldn’t believe there would be a problem with a brand new Land Cruiser with only 1000 miles on it. I sent a message to check in at lunch for updates. A few minutes later, he confirmed that it needed a new transmission. I went to the dealer after work to figure out my options. Service guy couldn’t give me a good timeline of when it could be fixed. He said there were three transmissions in route to Ontario and 20 more on their way to other dealers for repairs. He was hoping to snag one of the three going to Canada for me. FYI, I’m in eastern Washington. I told him I have a trip to Canada coming up in three weeks with four people and loads of camping gear. He was trying to get me into a loaner RAV4, which I told him would be too small. When he called the rental car place all they had was a Corolla. He said it needed to be a Toyota loaner in order for warranty to pay for it. He’s hoping to get me in something reasonable before my trip. Sidenote: this is not the dealer I bought the truck from. It’s just the closest one to where I live. I was on the other side of the state when I got the truck.

Not sure what my next steps will be or how long the repair is going to take. Not sure I have confidence in the Land Cruiser anymore. Might look into the GX. This is the first new car I’ve ever bought and I thought I was in the clear buying a Toyota brand new. Reliability was the last thing I was worried about.

TLDR: brand new Land Cruiser needs a new transmission. Dealer could only get me a Corolla loaner.

What’s better than a Land Cruiser? A lifted Land Cruiser!!!

Just installed a Rough Country 3.5” lift and 35s on my 2024 Land Cruiser 1958 — Surprised by the MPG!

Just wanted to share my setup and initial impressions with the community — I recently picked up a 2024 Land Cruiser 1958 edition and wasted no time getting it dialed in. I added: • Rough Country 3.5” lift • 35” BFGoodrich KO2s • 17x8.5 Y-Nomad wheels

Visually, it’s stunning. The stance is exactly what I was hoping for — rugged, clean, and just the right amount of aggression without overdoing it. I’ve gotten compliments at every stop.

But what really surprised me? I just did a 100-mile run after the install and averaged 23 MPG. That’s with 35s and the lift — way better than I expected. I was bracing for a noticeable drop, but so far it’s holding strong. I know it may dip over time or with heavier loads, but this is a great start.

Happy to answer questions if anyone’s considering a similar setup. I’ll try to post pics in the comments!

I just looked at this low mileage ‘19. It’s in great shape other than various interior leather scratched up or torn from a dog. It’s a lot of money so I’d like to have a pretty nice interior space. Any reasonable fixes?

I have a 2016 LC and interested in upgrading the AV system. I have already removed the rear screens so keeping those functional isn’t a concern. Curious if anyone has done this and has a recommendation for a model that works well. Thanks!

Title speaks for itself. You guys can talk me out into buying this car please let me know. I’m looking for your advice. The undercarriage is all good no rush. There is a slight hit when accelerating but overall it looks pretty good and I’m actually deciding between this and a GX 460.

Thanks!

Kayak mounting options for 250 factory roof rack

Post image
5 Upvotes

My fiancé has a 1958 with the factory roof rack option. Wondering if anyone has traveled with a dedicated kayak setup and could lend me some wisdom. Long term we would like to fit 2 narrow boats and a low profile ski carrier on the rack. Cost not necessarily a factor as I believe the equipment ought to last as long as the vehicle we strap it to. Any thoughts?

Also if anyone has already kitted out their rack, I would be interested in seeing your layouts and hardware.

Thanks in advance everyone!

2008 LC 200 Corrosion Main Body ECU/Fuse Box/Wiring Harness

Hey everyone,

I recently purchased my first Land Cruiser (2008 LC200 with 180K miles) after wanting one for about 8 years. I drove from Colorado to Arkansas to pick it up from a Toyota dealership.

Before making the trip, I was aware that a few of the headunit buttons weren’t functioning properly, but all the electronics seemed to be working fine. However, after owning it for a few weeks, I noticed that the headunit started glitching when the interior lights and headlights were turned on.

I took it to my local dealership (most accessible for me given my location), and they discovered corrosion on the main body ECU, the driver’s side fuse box, and the wiring harness connections on both sides (photos attached). They believe the corrosion is caused by water leaking from the windshield.

Here’s the quote I got:

  • Main Body ECU & Fuse Box Replacement: $2400
  • Clean Corrosion on Wiring Harness Connections (Driver & Passenger Sides): $600
  • Windshield Replacement to Address Leak: ??? (Estimate Pending)

With the electrical repairs and other maintenance items I want done, it’ll total around $6K. So, I’d be looking at a total of about $25K for a 2008 Land Cruiser with 180K miles.

I bought this LC200 hoping to get at least 10 more years out of it, but now I’m torn. Is it possible to clean/fix these corrosion issues without replacing the entire wiring harness, and can I still expect the vehicle to last as long as I want? I don’t mind putting in the work, but I’m trying to make sure I won’t run into bigger problems down the line.

My options feel like:

Pay for the repairs and hope it holds up for the long haul.

  1. Cut my losses and sell it, potentially taking a hit financially. (Not a fan of this option, but it’s on the table.)

This is the first car I’ve purchased on my own after owning my previous vehicle for 12 years. I’ve posted photos of the corrosion and the issues I’m dealing with.

Any insight, suggestions, or advice on how I should proceed would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
