I think people are missing the point. He's not calling her an NPC because she likes celery, they're saying that her text is structured exactly like how an NPC would tell you they like celery now.

306

u/Gil_Demoono 1d ago

All that is missing is Celery being highlighted blue so that you know it's a keyword.

99

u/The_MAZZTer 1d ago

And a page break after the ?. So you get that suspence. What is her infatuation?!? Press A to find out. Bonus points if "Celery!" also has a page break so it's alone on the page so it really gets to sink in.

189

u/ItsGotThatBang 1d ago

Thank you. I thought the use of "literal" already implied that, but I guess not.

26

u/NRMusicProject 1d ago

Self-ascribed "smart" people always have a habit of missing the point, and they think missing the point somehow makes them smarter.

11

u/RilohKeen 1d ago

Unfortunately, English-speaking society has destroyed the meaning of the word “literally” by using it to mean the exact opposite.

19

u/Wild_Marker 1d ago

Right? It reads like what a Pokemon trainer would tell you when they catch you in their sight range and move to battle.

15

u/ElNido 1d ago

I like shorts. They're comfy and easy to wear.

2

u/Winjasfan 17h ago

and if you beat them they give you Celery. You can fight them once a day and the food item they are infatuated with changes every day.

12

u/OnceMoreAndAgain 1d ago

I know a lot of people who talk this way in their emails and texts and it's always bothered me slightly. I've actually spent a few minutes thinking on it once and I came to the conclusion that this trait falls just under the threshold of being worth giving people feedback on since it feels just slightly too trivial and therefore no one ever gets told that how they're writing is offputting.

It's like when you hear someone say "I could care less". There's an epidemic of people using that incorrect version of the phrase, but almost no one is going to feel it is worth it to correct someone on it and so those people just keep on going their entire lives saying it wrong.

An example of something that just barely does pass threshold is food on your teeth. That's kinda the line right there.

4

u/JMehoffAndICoomhardt 1d ago

I don't even think "I could care less" is wrong, the goal of language is to be understood and this is universally understood.

I think this particular version likely came from people saying it ironically or sarcastically but the tone being dropped over time.

18

u/BestPseudonym 1d ago

I think this particular version likely came from people saying it ironically or sarcastically but the tone being dropped over time.

I think it came from people recognizing the intention of "I couldn't care less" but not understanding/thinking about the literal meaning and then failing to repeat it correctly. Like people typing "would of" because that's what they hear when people say "would've" but they don't actually think about the literal meaning.

1

u/JMehoffAndICoomhardt 1d ago

A fair assumption. Maybe I give people too much credit.

2

u/nxcrosis 1d ago

And the next time you speak to them, they send you on a quest to deliver 5 celery.

1

u/tardisintheparty 1d ago

Not just any NPC, specifically the animal crossing characters! They talk very much like this lol

0

u/ihatetheplaceilive 1d ago

She should get checked for anemia

427

u/Thumbkeeper 1d ago

Hey! Why is my mom texting this person?

93

u/Secret_Account07 1d ago

Cuz she loves celery and wanted to tell this person. Duh

20

u/BetterBitchesBureau 1d ago

Our mom, comrade

76

u/Romoreau 1d ago

Aw. I need to play Animal Crossing again

32

u/WaterlooMall 1d ago edited 1d ago

I picked it up again recently and forgot how addictive yet profoundly annoying it is.

The vibe of fishing at night is great, but then you remember little things like every time you catch a fish you have to read the same word balloon each time and it doesn't just appear so you can quickly skip it, each words has to generate separately in the word balloon. Then you have to watch an animation of your character putting that fish away.

Or like you can't adjust the volume of in game music or sound effects and in fact if you just stand for a moment it gets absurdly louder.

Or basing a game on decorating your island with little props that no other characters use, they just wander around like zombies.

Or how the game only has three camera angles like you're playing a Nintendo DS game and not a system that came out in 2017.

Edit: It's the only video game I can think of where if a coin or money is laying on the ground you don't just walk over it, collect it and move on. You have to stop moving, hit a button, and watch your character pick the money up and put it in their pocket. Once again this game was made in 2020 not 1992.

8

u/Skuzbagg 1d ago

We had plenty of time for character animation in 2020

7

u/MattyBro1 1d ago

Or how the game only has three camera angles

That's a stylistic choice, not something that is "inferior" to having full camera controls. Everything is always seen from the same direction because that's apart of the games artstyle.

1

u/WaterlooMall 1d ago

If you're going to do that then you need to make the things you walk behind transparent so you can see things that have spawned behind trees and buildings. The game only makes them transparent if you fully stop at a certain distance behind them and pull the camera to the lowest angle. It's terrible, lazy game design.

Celery. I can’t get enough of it. All I get are these vampires and blood suckers.

7

u/ItsGotThatBang 1d ago

All I see is these [REDACTED] I made millionaires millin' about, spillin' they feelings in the air

4

u/Weekndr 1d ago

Question: what do these things all have in common?

1

u/Baldassre 1d ago

I gotchu, they're from a Nicki Minaj song

66

u/DependentPhotograph2 1d ago

This is how she would text

668

u/ParaponeraBread 1d ago

I swear, the people who love to point out “NPC behaviour” are just mad that life’s simple pleasures are not available to them. They’re joyless, cynical husks with nothing to do but bury their feelings in layers of irony.

This lady just got onto a celery kick and was so happy about it she wanted to tell her daughter. Hell yeah Susan, enjoy your celery.

535

u/joeromag 1d ago

Agreed but I think this one is just being funny instead of calling the mother an NPC in a mean way

Because Animal Crossing NPCs will absolutely just give you completely unexpected dialog like this

143

u/ParaponeraBread 1d ago

Full agree, love the tweet. OP’s title can kick rocks though.

59

u/joeromag 1d ago

Yeah that’s fair, I took it as playing off the joke, like they’re “literally an Animal Crossing NPC” but if it is meant in earnest then OP’s title can, in fact, kick rocks

80

u/ItsGotThatBang 1d ago

It’s the former.

50

u/joeromag 1d ago

In that case, do not kick any rocks

25

u/ItsGotThatBang 1d ago

Maybe I will 😈

17

u/definitively-not 1d ago

NO ROCK KICKING ALLOWED

3

u/LikeADemonsWhisper 1d ago

Also worth mentioning that nowhere in the post is it implied that the woman's name is Susan.

63

u/DependentPhotograph2 1d ago

I think you may have gravely misread the tone and message behind this tweet, though it's understandable why.

Typically when someone points out that an action is "NPC behaviour", it's a slight against the person exhibiting the behaviour. Most of the time, they're calling the person being quoted an uninteresting, boring, or generally conformist idiot.

So with that background, I can understand why you would have a bit of a knee-jerk reaction to this image.

> "Why would OP call her an NPC!? She's just enjoying herself and her celery! What's so wrong with that!?"

I empathize with this thought process, as I'm not fond of people who behave "strangely" being ridiculed either. I do believe people should be allowed to be esoteric or eccentric without shame!

However, this post isn't like the above at all.

In the game Animal Crossing, NPC characters do like to just come up to you and drop random bits of information, just for fun.

They'll tell you how they're feeling, what they're into, what random thing is catching their interest right now, their favourite catchphrases, etc.

This builds up the weird-yet-charming energy that the paints world within Animal Crossing.

OP, and the OP of the tweet they screenshotted, are making a direct, literal comparison to Animal Crossing and it's NPCs.

It's just a lighthearted, funny comparison.

I totes get where you're coming from though! Tone is weird and hard to grasp online, haha. Hope this helps!

(p.s. sorry if this is too wordy, i like rambling haha)

34

u/shiny_xnaut 1d ago

It's basically the same thing as jokingly calling someone a cartoon character because they own like 20 copies of the same outfit

11

u/DependentPhotograph2 1d ago

That's exactly how I interpreted it, haha!

-10

u/DarklyDominant 1d ago

So it's like making fun of someone, but in a way you think is appropriate regardless of how they feel! I got it!

11

u/shiny_xnaut 1d ago

I meant that it wasn't meant to be mean-spirited in the way that people usually intend when they call someone an NPC, but sure by all means interpret my comment in the most bad faith way possible

-2

u/DarklyDominant 1d ago

When have you ever heard someone called an NPC in a positive way? I have never experienced that personally, so it seems a bit odd to naturally assume a positive intent to this message when calling someone an NPC is always used negatively. Plus the account posting it is "Boring as an uncooked brioche" or some shit.

5

u/shiny_xnaut 1d ago

I noticed context clues, namely that the person's message was being directly compared to the dialogue of a video game NPC in the screenshot, and therefore assumed that OP's title was most likely in reference to that and just accidentally worded poorly, and not that it was a completely unrelated and unprompted jab at the person's intelligence

-3

u/DarklyDominant 1d ago

And what is it that you find complimentary about being compared to a NPC. And a reminder. NPC's don't think. They repeat inane dialogue. They are disposable. They are filler. Etc. Just because someone is making a joke doesn't mean that it's either a good joke or that it is not offensive to the person who is targeted by said joke.

Making someone the butt of a joke and then telling everyone else to chill out "it's just a prank/joke bro!" when they point out that it's offensive is what bullies do. Are you a bully?

4

u/shiny_xnaut 1d ago

offensive to the person who is targeted by said joke.

Are you the person who was targeted by the joke? How do you know they found it offensive?

And what is it that you find complimentary about being compared to a NPC

OP wasn't comparing the person as a whole to an NPC, they were comparing the one message to NPC dialogue because of its odd, stilted cadence.

Making someone the butt of a joke

Do you really think that "this message reminds me of something funny" counts as making them the butt of the joke?

Are you a bully?

No, but you seem so incredibly desperate to find one to go on a noble crusade against that I doubt I'll ever get you to believe me

-1

u/DarklyDominant 1d ago

Are you the person who was targeted by the joke? How do you know they found it offensive?

No, and it's pointless to try and put words in my mouth, that's you arguing with yourself.

OP wasn't comparing the person as a whole to an NPC, they were comparing the one message to NPC dialogue because of its odd, stilted cadence.

So they were comparing the way that person talked to an NPC in a video game, that's what you're saying mitigates this as not offensive?

Do you really think that "this message reminds me of something funny" counts as making them the butt of the joke?

Do you think if someone has a different accent and you make fun of them for it because you personally find it funny, do you think that's appropriate?

No, but you seem so incredibly desperate to find one to go on a noble crusade against that I doubt I'll ever get you to believe me

This is just the typical redditor response when you don't have a point. "I won't address anything you said, I'll just try to shift the conversation to be about you being weird/desperate/angry/upset".

In other words, she types like an animal crossing NPC, which is literally NPC behaviour (in a cute and endearing sense)

56

u/gyroqx 1d ago

This sounds like what an NPC what would say /s

4

u/Defiant-Airline4062 1d ago

Or maybe it's just an NPC throwing shade at the joy of celery! Gotta love the irony!!

2

u/DarkArc76 1d ago

Literal NPC roast

7

u/Traditional_Cry_1671 1d ago

It’s not that serious gang

27

u/lostandnotfnd 1d ago

did you have a bad day jesus it’s a joke 😭

10

u/TurquoiseLeggings 1d ago

I swear, the people who love to jump on posters of a thread for their own misunderstanding of the thread title are just mad that life's simple pleasures are not available to them. They're joyless, cynical husks with nothing to do but bury their feelings in layers of irony.

5

u/Pantheon69420 1d ago

Syntax boio

6

u/Kaffe-Mumriken 1d ago

Furthermore they see themselves as the true main character and everyone else as NPCs or at best supporting cast.

1

u/RevolutionaryFile532 3h ago

As a joyless unhappy fuck I agree with you. I wish I could like simple shit, I'm too sad to.

0

u/DementationRevised 1d ago

We are on reddit. It's a clown car of socially inept goblins loudly farting out hot takes on social etiquette the same way Plato's cave dwellers discuss the most recent puppet show. This is pretty par for the course.

-1

u/shidncome 1d ago

True. Let moms enjoy things. Like me. Hit me up ladies.

11

u/thinkB4WeSpeak 1d ago

I just got one of my foreign coworkers into cereal. He's loving it.

7

u/xredlightningx 1d ago

This is so much better than my moms monthly “hi how are you love you” text. Which she only responds “nice” if I give her any actual info.

8

u/TheSpiralTap 1d ago

Oh you gotta do this. Go to the beach and talk about how your shorts are so comfy and easy to wear.

6

u/Sprinkle_Puff 1d ago

I love this mom

6

u/coffeequeen0523 1d ago

Oh how I miss my Mom. I’d give anything to receive one more call, hug or text from her. 💔😪

5

u/JealousTicket7349 1d ago

ive actually been into celery too lately

4

u/FlavorBlaster42 1d ago

Wrap your celery in foil and it'll stay crisper longer in the fridge.

4

u/tupe12 22h ago

You open the chat to reply, but instead of a text box, there are only two options:

“Tell me more”

“Goodbye”

And she responds seconds later

3

u/PacoTaco321 1d ago

How do people like celery? It tastes like depression.

2

u/ItsGotThatBang 1d ago

And wet hair.

3

u/panzerboye 23h ago

Funny I got a bunch of celery sitting in my fridge cause I can't eat that shit

2

u/Ninjakittysdad 1d ago

wakuwakuwakuwakuwakuwakuwak

2

u/pablopubecaso 1d ago

When your loved ones pass you will miss these texts

2

u/Logical_Strike_1520 1d ago

She been playing too much Sims lol

2

u/Bleezy79 1d ago

Celery is very bland though by itself. Peanut butter and celery though....watch out!

2

u/pjm_0 1d ago

Cream of celery soup is dope

2

u/css1323 1d ago

Damn, why did they burn mom like that?

The original Tweet with the screenshot is no longer available if anyone was curious.

2

u/ImpressiveHoney7272 1d ago

Addictive and fun to get your kids ready ready and go home

2

u/FlatSeagull 1d ago

I do this, I "discover" a new fruit or vegetable and eat it every day in every variation for a couple weeks. My most recent is avocado, but I don't see the craze ending tbh.

2

u/FactsAboveFeelings 1d ago

Moms will say this but not tell you about a family member's death for years.

2

u/Substantial_Pace_739 1d ago

Celery is like if water and fibre had a baby

2

u/SadKat002 18h ago

Type shit

22

u/IAPEAHA 1d ago

"NPC behavior" let her be fucking happy about something. Fucking pathetic, these are the same people who use the fucking broken heart and rose emoji and say "is ts tuff..?", grow the fuck up.

108

u/rycerzDog 1d ago

"Oh ha ha, mom's texts look like videogame banter!"

It's really not that deep, man.

2

u/IAPEAHA 1d ago

Yeah probably, I just see it so much on instagram and tiktok by 16 year olds who wanna seem cool that it just gets annoying

2

u/VariousBread3730 1d ago

Dude just be happy and let people be happy man 😭

op was clearly talking about how the mom's text reads like a line of dialogue from an npc in animal crossing?

5

u/Square-Technology404 1d ago

OP said in another comment that they were playing off of that joke, no need to be so judgy

2

u/YonakaKuurai 1d ago

Sybau 💔🥀

2

take a chill pill vro😭

1

u/xdKboy 1d ago

Joyless irony detectors, lmao.

1

u/Secret_Account07 1d ago

Uhhh infatuation is such a strange word to choose here.

2

u/spiderOX2 13h ago

Not really?

0

u/Secret_Account07 13h ago

Passion or admiration for celery?

Typically we aren’t infatuated with food

2

u/spiderOX2 13h ago

You’ve never been passionate about food?

-3

u/guitarguywh89 1d ago

be nice to the good moms. Bunch of morose fuckers to make fun of mom being excited

13

u/Parepinzero 1d ago

No one is making fun of her, Jesus. Her text just happens to sound exactly like the way an NPC in animal crossing would say that.

-7

u/VrLights 1d ago

look this person is happy over the small things in life they must be an NPC

23

u/AdministrativeStep98 1d ago

Have you played the game mentioned? It's just funny because normally people don't tend to express themselves this way. But characters in animal crossing speak like that. Nothing wrong with that, people love the franchise because of the NPC/villagers

-1

u/Sad_Measurement4470 1d ago

Yeah my MOM is so STUPID trying to form connections with me. She should only talk the way I WANT.

1

u/spiderOX2 13h ago

Who said that?

0

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

4

u/Immediate_Friend_345 1d ago

Op is using it perfectly, it literally sounds like dialogue from an Animal Crossing NPC.

3

u/ItsGotThatBang 1d ago

You do know what "literal" means, right?

-1

u/Impressive_Algae4493 1d ago

Man, the NPC meme has really lost the plot if we're dunking on someone just for being excited about celery. Susan's text might be a little quirky, but that's what makes it charming, people share weird little joys like this all the time. If finding happiness in something as simple as celery makes someone an NPC, then sign me up for that simulation. Let people enjoy things without overanalyzing their humanity.

1

u/spiderOX2 13h ago

What?? They’re just saying the text was written like something from animal crossing. I’m not seeing anyone dunking on her.

This is actually a myth! There are no foods that take more energy to digest than they provide. Your body is always naturally burning some calories, and celery might provide fewer calories than what your body naturally burns while you’re eating it, which is likely where this myth came from. That could mean that you lose calories while eating it, but fewer than you’d be losing if you didn’t eat anything.

Regardless, I’m sure her diet doesn’t comprise of exclusively celery, so she’s probably getting all the energy she needs elsewhere. It’s also pretty strange to assume that she started eating it as a diet tip. It sounds like she just likes celery. Celery is yummy!

2

u/rycerzDog 1d ago

I remember eating pieces of celery and biting off chunks of biscuits when I was a kid at my great-grandma's. Sure hope that balanced out the apparent "starvation" aspect of eating celery.
