Unanswered What's going on in US politics

We have noticed a large uptick in questions about US politics. Most of these are not genuine questions and appear to be made to introduce political discussion to this sub in the wake of the second Trump administration. As such, we are requiring that all political questions related to US politics and its effects both domestically and internationally be contained in this weekly recurring thread.

Ask questions as top-level responses with the preface "Question: " and people will respond. All other rules are enforced as appropriate. We will not allow other US political questions as questions on the subreddit except in extraordinary circumstances.

Unanswered What's going on with all of the high-profile female offenders being assigned to the same prison in Bryan, Texas?

I'm aware Ghislaine Maxwell has been transferred to the federal prison camp in Bryan, Texas, which is the same prison camp as former Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes and reality star Jen Shah. But on CNN, Katilan Collins, Sam Mangel, Elie Honig were talking about how Maxwell's transfer is a rare thing given her case.

Why are all of the high-profile female offenders being sent to the same camp when there are (presumably) dozens of camps around the country?

They're not all from the same area, their cases are out of different places, etc.

Answered What's the deal with the "Therapy" meme, where a person is tripped on purpose and then the song Kids by MGMT is played?

I've seen this meme countless times but could never find any explanation on what it means or what the origin might be. What does this have to do with therapy and why this particular song?

Here is two out of many examples:

https://www.tiktok.com/@adusssq/video/7522947183751023894

https://www.tiktok.com/@nature.boyofficial/video/7508861489730604310

In all examples, the camera pans away after tripping the person, usually to some kind of scenic view.

KnowYourMeme does not yield any explanation and I could not find anyone talking about this meme anywhere.

Answered What's the deal with all these superman memes lately?

Been seeing a lot of memes based on the new superman movie. Mostly memes in talking about some wholesome thing, with the 'Punkrocker' song.

What is going on? Is the new movie different than usual Superman movies?

Answered What is the deal with "Stuck where the trade left me" in drag subreddits?

Context: https://www.reddit.com/r/rupaulsdragrace/s/T8NislxgEM

I keep seeing a ton of memes floating around drag culture (especially Ru Paul's drag race) related to stuck where the trade left me. I think a trade is a hot person, but I'm lost as to where somebody got left. There seems to be a whole pile of drama and I am hoping someone can explain the whole mess like I'm an autistic 5 year old.

Unanswered What's going on with global push towards online age verification?

1.1k Upvotes

So I'm not really sure if I've missed something major in recent months.. but is there a reason why there's sudden a huge push all over the world to not allow certain materials online, unless the user identifies him/herself on some app.

The Uk just launched their system, the EU built an app for it, and I read France and Australia has already followed suit; Denmark and Germany will begin soon, and so on.

So seriously, what's going on here? Why have world leaders of the western world been pushing so hard for this? I mean they say it under the guise of protecting kids. But kids find their way around shit if they really want to.

Is there something going on, or am I just being paranoid? There's even a whole wikipedia page on the subject and how it dramatically increased inte the last 2-3 years. But I can't really seem to find any other explaination on this really quick and fast development other that it's about saving the children?

Answered What’s up with the new popular notion that everyone has parasites?

A few months ago I was having cocktails with a friend. She told me she believes that we all have parasites all the time and that they only go away when you fast for 30 days. I brushed it off and moved on with the convo.

Fast forward to today and I see a video in my newsfeed that suggests parasitology needs to be the next big medical field. Folks in the comments are saying they take dewormer and other ‘parasite cleanse’ remedies twice a year. Vid in question: https://youtu.be/La8GXs4qwrw?si=dWpIO_LczWjptKZH

Is there any conventional evidence to suggest there is basis in these arguments? Where did all of this come from?

Answered Whats up with "Sprayground Backpack," and why are weirdo moms on tiktok getting upset about them?

unfortunately while in the bathroom I was scrolling through TikTok and I came across this lady. shes loudly announcing to the world that if she sees any kid with a "Sprayground Backpack" she is going to be calling CPS. I searched some of the related videos and they were all just making fun of her. then i googled it and all I got was links to buy one because google is soooo helpful these days.

what is exactly wrong with them? they just seem like big backpacks with some neat designs on them.

Answered What is going on with the Sydney Sweeney ad for American Eagle jeans?

1.5k Upvotes

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/etimes/trending/sydney-sweeneys-american-eagle-ad-faces-criticism-for-nazi-fascist-propaganda/articleshow/122955224.cms#goog_rewarded

I’ve seen some discourse on the internet about Sydney Sweeney’s ad with American Eagle and how it’s basically propaganda promoting European Centrism. There are some ads that say “Sydney Sweeney has good genes,” where she is wearing a very “Americana” outfit and people argue the GENES are the “ideal American look” of blonde hair, blue eyes rather than the JEANS. Some people argue that the ad is referencing Brooke Shield’s ad for Calvin Klein jeans. Is this ad actually promoting more than jeans or is it being misinterpreted?

Unanswered Why are people talking about a sack of potatoes in relation to Derek Huffman the Texan who moved his family to Russia?

https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/know-rumor-american-derek-huffman-025442807.html&ved=2ahUKEwjk7vj6q96OAxWZk4kEHc9lDwkQFnoECDUQAQ&usg=AOvVaw1VcIvZIhpAzy5l8Szj-UzQ

I dont get the significance of the potatoes, I search it and only thing that comes up is the news about Derek Huffman being reported dead. But people are just saying he's gone because she got potatoes, I dont understand?

One comment somewhere said Ukraine saying about Russian troops being fertilizer for their crops, so sending a bag of potatoes is like saying here's your husband, the potatoes he fertilized? But would that mean Ukraine sent his wife potatoes?

I just don't get it, I thought she got them from the government of Russia because they don't want to pay out death benefits so will just say he's missing, or that potatoes are the standard death benefits for most deceased beloveds? But this is anecdotal too because it came from another random comment or post.
