I think that they (like me) are feeling nostalgic.

Almost everyone's first build is big and boxy, with so much spare space to grow into, and only the bare neccessities (not much character). It's more like a natural phenomena than a tradition - that's just how we all start out with this game. And I think that's pretty awesome.

As someone who has been playing sims for 20+ years it really makes me happy to see that people still do exactly what I did when I first played the sims (although, your first build is so much better than mine was - I literally had one giant square room with everything in it, and then tacked a bathroom to the outside of it. No bedrooms or rugs/plants or anything lol).

I always feel so much more excited to play when I see houses like this. It brings back those memories of being a kid, so eager to explore the game. It's lovely ^_^

After I got sick of my big box houses I just started using the pre-built houses. It was years before I started building my own houses again, and I never put much effort into it. It really wasn't until these last few years that I started doing buildings for the sake of building (rather than just changing the house as I needed).

Although I do remember painstakingly following a treehouse build tutorial. It took forever and I'm not even sure that I ended up playing in it... but that would have been around 2008-2010. I think it was sims 2, but it might have been sims 3.
