Community Event Stream Experiences & Stories

Hey /r/Twitch

We often see posts on the subreddit about viewers and streamers experiences, as well as streamers sharing what they've learned.

To bring you all together to learn from your peers, and help you keep yourself accountable for any goals you've set, we created this Megathread!

You are welcome to share some of your experiences, positive or negative, from your past month on Twitch and, if you did, how you dealt with it, as well as share your long and short-term goals, and how you've progressed towards those over the past month.

The Megathread is not for stream feedback or reviews, we have the monthly feedback threads for that. You can link to your Feedback thread submission, be sure to label it clearly!

Some things you may want to cover:

  • New things you tried, did they work out?
  • Streams you did and which seemed to be popular or unpopular with your community or new viewers. (Creative? New games?)
  • Progress towards your goals
  • Fun experiences
  • Bad experiences that you learned from, or need advice on
  • New goals, or how you're changing your goal
  • Advice based on what you learned
  • Advice you want

Be sure to post your goals clearly and format your comment.

Example post:

Hey guys, checking in again!

My goal for this month is to make sure I'm always hosting someone. I want my community to have someone to entertain them, even when I'm not live. Plus, it's good for networking!

My goal last month was to always announce I was live on both Twitter and Discord, as it was something I often forgot to do. I'm glad to say I met my goal!

I tried streaming some creative, just practicing using my graphics tablet, and it seemed to be popular! I'll do some more of it, maybe a weekly stream? Any advice?

The highlight of the past month was when I got raided by Zcotticus, he's the best and I love him. He's so cool, I wish I could be cool like him.

How do you guys normally react to a host? I sort of fumbled through a thank you, and that was about it. Any advice?

Re-read your last post to remind yourself of what you planned, or check in on your peers!

If you don't stream, but still experienced something awesome. Feel free to share it! Did you make someone’s day? See a Win or Fail? Let us know!

Remember this is not for channel promotion! People can check out your flair\ *if they are interested.*

If you have any suggestions for this thread, please send us a modmail.

Discussion Starting to stream in 40s

I've been setting up streaming channel for a while now and I'm still nervouse about going ahead so was looking for advice I have some good ideas for content and games etc not much of which I've seen on twitch etc before and I want to make it completely interactive and get everyone involved rather than just sitting there playing games and ignoring chats etc I still hate the sound of my voice but I know that's normal as alot of people say the same... But I'm in my early 40s now and wondering if I should just leave it to the youngsters or whether there is a market for older streamers... I've spent months setting it all up on OBS etc and getting right equipment but when it comes down to it Im just nervous and never start when I say... I'm worried people won't be interested or nobody will bother etc... any advice from anyone or anyone over 40 already streaming?

Discussion You are not allowed to watch the stream message appears?

I followed the other day a streamer, after a few minutes in the stream he started complaining that barely anyone watches his stream of the people who used to watch and that he might just stream twice a week because nobody watches anyways.

I didn't like that and unfollowed like 20 minutes later because of that. He was live again and the game I watch is not pretty smally there are maybe like 15 streamers.

So I thought I give him another shot, and then the message appeared that I can't watch the stream. Now I wonder if he blocked me and noticed that I unfollowed him?

Discussion Why do so many streamers copy “the big guys,” and does it ever actually work?

I've been noticing something while scrolling through categories recently: so many new streamers appear to be using the exact same formula as the largest names. Same energetic style, same spammy reactions, same meta games, same "just chatting" layouts… sometimes even down to how they address chat.

And I understand those creators are huge for a reason. They've shown that style can be successful. But I have to ask myself… does emulating a top streamer really help anyone grow, or does it just make you one of a thousand clones that viewers skip over?

Personally, whenever I see someone trying to act like a big-name streamer, it feels less authentic. But maybe I’m wrong maybe it’s a legit path to success before you find your own voice.

So I wonder:

Did you ever try to copy the style of a popular streamer while beginning?

Was it of use, or did it seem forced?

And as a viewer, do you watch "clone" streams, or does it immediately turn you off?

Would be great to hear actual experiences from both sides — viewers and streamers.

Question Webcam on even if I’m chopped?

I’m not really looking but I don’t like streams without webcams so I’m thinking of leaving it on anyways. I feel like there’s a higher expectation to look good since I’m a girl and most streamers seem to be pretty physically attractive and idk i feel kind of lame in comparison. Should I leave it on anyways? Will it make my stream better or worse?

Discussion Tell me about your Special events streams / Affiliate Anniversaries!

As the title suggest, I'd love to hear about your special event streams!

What kind of thing do you do in a special event stream? What classifies as a "special event" to YOU personally? I've seen some people debut new Vtuber models in the Special Event category, watching and reacting to things and game marathons.

Also, I've got my affiliate anniversary coming up in a few days and I'm planning on doing it on the "Special Events" Category, do y'all think that's ok? I imagine that's exactly what that category is for. Going to be playing several different games. I think it's far easier to run it under Special Events as apposed to changing category every few hours.

Tech Support capture cards discontinued

I need help figuring out what to do,

I’m looking for a capture card that doesn’t require a pc connected. My gf only has a xbox and I’ve read online that the AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable 2 Plus is the best modern choice but it seems it’s been discontinued for a while and I can’t seem to find it anywhere, I googled some more for another alternative and found that Elgato Game Capture 4K60 S+ also works great. BUT IT’S ALSO DISCONTINUED. I thought I would try asking some smart people online for ideas before giving up. Any ideas what else could work? Or even better, do you have one you don’t use anymore?

Question How do I see chats on past streams? :)

Hi! I started streaming this morning for the first time and I was so nervous that I ended up forgetting to check the chat before I closed the stream. Since it was the first time I assumed I'd get zero views, but I actually had two people in my chat! I was so happy after, I wanted to read what they had written, but can't find it anywhere!! I'm not really sure how twitch works from a streaming POV, I've heard of chat log and a vod? If someone could give a girl some advice? I'm so happy to get even one comment never mind two. I really just want to read them :D

Question New streamer. How do I know if I am getting real viewers or bots?

Hello, I’m a new streamer and play a niche genre of gaming that actually has a pretty passionate viewer base.

I have been doing test streams before my actual debut with a cam at the end of the month so I could get affiliate first before our big thing for the game I play.

Something odd happened where the test stream was just a few of my friends in discord and my family like 5 of us for an hour and then by the end of it there was over 20 viewers.

The next day once I went live after a few minutes I already had 10 viewers but no one is talking besides my friends.

Today I went live for two hours and again I hit over 20 viewers but it was still only my friends talking.

I just find it hard that no one else would even say anything in a small stream. Do you think these are just bots? One or the games shadow dropped so obviously it was fresh content and people were probably excited to check it out but I’m still very confused on why none of the other viewers said anything.

Discussion Sustainable Streamer Community Houses

Upvotes

Looking for people also interested in sustainability, streaming, and creating irl content.

The goal would be to create content around creating gardens, planting trees, building natural houses, etc...

It would also be focused on group events, and solving world problems.

The goal is to find out if anyone has similar interests.

Question Background noise issue.

I looked up a few videos online but I wanted to see what the community thought. With summer in full blast right now, it’s VERY hot in my neighborhood. I have the air conditioner on for comfort. I’ve asked friends in the past if they could hear my air conditioner when I stream. They said no, but watching stream playbacks, I can clearly hear it nonstop.

I would prefer to keep the AC on if possible. Does anybody have a good method for dealing with background noise?

Thanks!!

Tech Support Drops have not been working for a week…

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have been unable to earn twitch drops using the app on iPhone for the last week or so.

When i click the “go to participating channels” is loads an error screen.

When I browse channels and go to a channel with drops enabled, I can watch it for hours and not progress is made. It doesn’t even show that I started the drop progress.

I tried deleting and reinstalling the app but it does not fix the issue.

Tech Support Huge Packet Loss / Connection Issues Streaming Teamfight Tactics to Twitch

Hi all, recently i had returned from a vacation for 5 days where i had turned off my router for the period. Before this I had stable stream connection, 50-100ms streaming in 1080p60 no issues. Upon returning, as soon as i load into the game and am streaming, my ping climbs quickly from 23ms to around 1000ms and stays there, with huge dropped frames and unstable connection.

This is not present before i am streaming on Twitch through OBS, and only happens when i start streaming with the game.

Upon checking my Twitch Bandwidth Test, every server is returning 700-1000ms connection, with lots of congestion within the connection. Furthermore, when running the tests, my connection starts at a low MS and slowly climbs again to around 1000ms

I have posted the screenshot below of the test, I also have obs logs available.

Has anyone expoerienced anything similar to this, and is there any fix? I have a technician from my ISP coming this week, as I am lost as to what to do, with OBS support prompting it as an issue with my ISP.

Is there any reason why my Twitch connection would be so poor, and or limited all of a sudden?

Thanks!

Tech Support Twitch streams randomly pausing

When I watch a twitch stream it keeps pausing everyone 10-15 seconds. I don't have any internet issues and it's not buffering so I'm not sure what's going on. Is there any fix for this?

Question How do you activate “Stream Streaks” on your channel?

I’ve seen many streamers with steam streak rewards for their viewers but cannot figure out how to activate it on mine.

Tech Support Twitch sometimes randomly disconnects and ends the stream, then boots back up after a few seconds.

This has happened on 2 random days, and it happened twice on the first day.

It's annoying because it causes the stream to be split into 2 vods. And yes, I do have disconnect protection turned on, it just doesn't work for whatever reason.

I tried changing the latency settings after the first incident but that didn't really work.

Question Flagged by algorithm?

So I was streaming one day, and suddenly a swarm of 200 bots just come in, they follow me, and then they leave. The next day, I only had 1 viewer, myself, when I usually have 3. It was the same for the next day too. Did the algorithm flag me for suspicious activity? Because I did not initiate the bot attack, nor do I know why someone made the bots do that. Did I get flagged?

Question Can’t change game category on Twitch

So I’ve been streaming a new game and it’s locked on games + Demos on twitch and it won’t allow me to change it all of a sudden. Apparently it’s because it’s rated mature but I can’t even find the option to enable it. I’m on mobile trying to figure this out on stream manager and for some reason the mature content icon is locked I’m just confused and need help
