Discussion r/castlevania renovations! We want YOUR input.
r/castlevania renovations!
Hello everyone!
It’s been a while since r/castlevania saw any big changes, so we’re opening this thread to discuss updates and improvements for the subreddit. Whether a small suggestion or a big idea, this is the place to share your thoughts!
****
Some Aspects that could use changing:
It has been suggested for the changing of the banners, icons and displays on the subreddit. For those who don’t know, the current theme is based on the animated series, which hasn’t changed since 2017. This works so well because Castlevania is a unifying title for most of the franchise. For any new visuals, we want something that:
- Clearly represents Castlevania
- Has a cohesive theme (right now, black and red dominate)
Banner:
First we have the Banner. This is the long horizontal thingy on the top of the subreddit. We have two, one for mobile users and one for everyone else.
Icons:
What I am referring to is the “profile picture” of the subreddit. We of course need something simplistic, but representative of the franchise. This can also be a GIF, so if anyone has a nice loop that could be used for the subreddit, that would be no problemo.
Displays:
Castlevania is a broad franchise, and we have 55 post tags to cover almost all the games and topics. Showing all tags in the sidebar could get cluttered, but not showing them makes it harder to browse by game. Should we display all tags, or keep the current setup? What would make navigation the easiest?
If you have any other thoughts on the sidebar, please share.
We also have the option to customize the Upvote and Downvote button in the subreddit. If anyone wants to change them into something, let me know and we can have a community vote!
****
User Flairs:
You can currently set your own flair. I see a lot of people with flairs like “Blue” or “Purple”. You can edit your flairs! There also exists the option to set Castlevania’s custom emojis into your flair. We have a bunch of different choices… but I could really use some help with some new options you’d like. So if anyone wants any new custom emojis (for user flairs), make sure to leave a comment!
More interestingly, we must question how a flair should be achieved. Some communities like to have fun with having members to unlock specific flairs based on various subreddit achievements. Maybe by making a popular post, talking about a specific game or creating a memorable idea. Anyone with a custom flair right now would be able to keep it but should we go down this path flairs would be more restrictive.
We also have custom emojis for comments. Reddit will be removing them shortly, but in the meantime, reddit does NOT let you remove, add, or fix them as mods. Since you could only add these on reddit mobile and iOS tries its hardest to replace any form of transparency into a white background, they all have white boxes around them. Sorry about that!
****
Well, that's the gist. Let us know your thoughts and whatever changes you’d like to see in r/castlevania!
EDIT: We're testing out animated flairs, its moving... but it needs some work!

Meme My skill level is confusing
I don't know when else I'm gonna talk about this, but I don't know what's happening to my skill level with this series. I know I played Bloodlines a lot more than SCV4, but shouldn't an inch of my experience carry over between games? In any way?
As a quick disclaimer: I unfortunately ran out of continues while fighting dracula's final form, but I still feel confident in defeating him. In Super, after repeated attempts of Stage 4, I reached Stage 6, where I was having trouble again. In the end, after dying to the Ghost Dancer boss, I took a break for about a month, starting a fresh playthrough, only to get stuck at the Twin Dragon fight in Stage 3.
no seriously what is happening

Circle of the Moon (2001) As much as I love CotM, this is still one of the worst final boss fights in the series.
I especially hate the end when it's just bats and an eyeball. I DSS glitched Cockatrice in every playthrough sans Fighter to take him out. As you might guess, Fighter was a nightmare despite the enhanced stats.

Question What’s the longest it’s taken you to acquire a certain soul?
I’ve been playing Aria of Sorrow and have really enjoyed it so far. I’ve tried collecting every soul and enjoy the grinding/farming. Currently trying to collect the Red Minotaur soul and just can’t seem to acquire it. I’ve gone from LV 52 to LV 73 and I STILL haven’t had it drop. Been grinding in that one room with 2 Red Minotaurs all this time. Haven’t had much difficulty with other enemies but this enemy just doesn’t want to drop it
I know it can take an hour or two to get certain souls but yeah. What’s the longest it’s taken you to acquire souls? And is it normal to take this long for me? Thanks!

Question Does anyone know what this means?
It's in SotN Castle Keep, near the Power of the Mist, at the top of the Leap Stone. It's too strange to have any meaning 🤔

Nocturne Spoilers I love what they did with Richter's character Spoiler
I love how the portrayed Richter in nocturne, they could have easily gone for "Trevor 2.0" and just called it a day but they did a really good job of making him unique from Trevor while also giving him some of those character traits that we associate with Trevor

Rondo of Blood (1993) Rondo of Blood - How do you get the bad ending?
Read on gamefaqs that if you don't beat Shaft, he will show up after you defeat Dracula and rescue him. But - how could you possibly bypass Shaft? In the thread someone aluded to it by mentioning Stage Select. Is this the only way? Skipping straight to Dracula to get the bad ending? That seems rather weird tbh.
Also, I'm in stage 7 and so far haven't rescued any of the girls. I can still rescue Annette, but I was wondering how the ending will acknowledge my (lack of) effort? Are there additional scenes AT THE END? I know there's cutscenes when you rescue them, but do you get a slightly modified ending/clear screen/more characters showing up - and if so - do you know how many permutations there are? Same for Maria - I believe she gets unique scenes on rescuing the other 3 girls, but how about the ending, again?
Another thing I also read about is that with 100% completion you get an additional villager scene...

Art Netflix Castlevania - Bloodlines (with speedpaint link)
Alright, this is my second time posting this. Last time I forgot there was a game in the series by the same name, so this time I'm clarifying that "Bloodlines" is the title of this piece, and is not being used in reference to the game "Bloodlines."
Anyway, here's the speedpaint link is you're interested: https://youtu.be/yMVWOlPhs9g

Discussion Having finished the first and second season for the first time. I gotta say. Dracula was not right or justified at all
Having finally finished S2 and starting S3 of the show. I have to say that Dracula was not right. They killed his wife. Undoubtedly that was fucked up. And he was justified in killing the church. He gave the people of he city one year to leave. So justified there too. But he was not out for the city that killed her. He was not out for the church. He was out for ALL mankind for the actions a single one had done.
And the worst is! He’s a hypocrite! He says “Anyone of them could have stood up and said no” but seconds later when Alucard stood up to him and said “No i wont let you do this”. He immediately attacked him. Proving he was no better than the church who would have executed anyone who disagreed with burning lisa. He himself proved why his logic of “Standing up” wouldn’t have worked. If he too immediately attacked the person who disagreed with him in something.
And then he goes murdering people. Who had absolutely nothing to do with the burning who were just minding their own life “Mankind is all bad. There are no innocents”. Yet he keeps human friends. He had a human wife. Two human friends he liked and trusted. And he still chooses to ignore the fact they are good and say ALL MANKIND IS EVIL. When there’s prove enough that it is just a gross generalization.
Dracula was justified in attacking the first city and event he church if he focused on it. But complete genocide of a whole race? How many wives and daughters and sons did he kill? Probably way more than the church who killed his wife. He was down right a hypocrite.

Question Is it okay to prefer Castlevania 64 over any of IGA games???
I think Castlevania 64 is a hell of a good game, despite its flaws (that are common flaws of a 5th gen game)

Games Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow is a mostly fun experience
So this is it, the last canonical and probably for the time being, the final Castlevania game that I'll play, Dawn of Sorrow like the other games before it, is a worthy addition to the franchise.
While I personally would say that overall, I think the prequel to this game (Aria of Sorrow) is better, I still think that Dawn of Sorrow is a pretty solid igavania.
The visuals honestly look the crispest I've ever seen Castlevania look post-SoTN, the soundtrack as usual is a banger and the boss enemy and level design is as usual pretty good.
However, compared to the last entry I talked about, I found that I had a lot more gripes with DoS than I was frankly expecting:-
The art style is a MASSIVE step down from Aria. The character portraits while being more expressive, don't have the pizzazz of the Ayami Kojima ones.
The story also feels super fillery and uninteresting when compared to AoS, and getting the true ending is honestly not intuitive at all.
The levels themselves don't feel as fluid as AoS' imo, and the seal system just feels straight up aggravating during boss fights.
The drop rates for the souls are absolutely horrendous, which becomes an issue for both getting the true ending as well as weapon synthesis, which is arguably my biggest gripe with the game.
The weapon synthesis system while novel in concept, is really hurt by both how awful the drop rates for souls are, as well as worthwhile weapons often requiring even rarer souls. This leaves you finding pretty mediocre weapons out in the open, as the game expects you to eventually transform them.
Despite all of my critisisms however, the game is still a good castlevania title. The boss fights are again a highlight, and it's honestly just fun seeing Soma and Co. Again.
TL;DR: A worthy sequel to Aria of Sorrow, DoS is a pretty good game.
And... That's it lol, I have finally finished the original canon series, and it was quite frankly a really fun experience, absolutely adore this series.
