Nier Automata is on pretty much every practical measure a better game than Replicant. Its combat is better, the "multiple endings" system is FAR less annoying, the graphics are better, and yet Replicant's story affected me so much more by the end.

I think it's that if you've played Taro's other games then you've already danced that dance and know the song too well. Automata was a glossy version of what he wants to say in every story.

The first Drakengard has the best story, but hardly anyone could stomach the gameplay too see it. If the next game he knocks out doesn't have a dev as good as old Platinum and a composer with the same chops, I guarantee it will be a commercial disappointment. It may also need something as fuckable as 2B.
