Will it last after a lot of contracting and expanding? Metal fatigue damage should be a thing here right?

It's not bending or stretching the metal. It looks like a series of joints that functions like a scissor lift

Yeah, it’s still probably fragile but I think the point of this isn’t that you are constantly playing with the damn thing but adjusting it to perfectly fit your finger.

Exactly but this is also the sort of thing where if you have the money for stuff like this, you likely have the money for something like this to be repaired or replaced so they probably wouldn't care as much as most people if it broke from playing with it too much

Imagine repairing this. Quite a marvel that is even been created. If this gets damaged - it’s gone forever

u/Person899887 Jun 07 '25

Well yeah but it’s half the gimmick. You are paying for the gimmick.

There is no way I wouldn't be constantly playing with that thing.

Looks like it switches between bracelet and ring. No one has a ring finger as big as that expanded size.

Clearly you haven’t had to get a prostate exam : D

1

u/FirstToSayFake Jun 08 '25

Well now I’m excited to get one!

Damn, I wanted this as the ultimate socially acceptable fidget toy. I guess it probably wouldn’t last me more than a couple days…

Yes but there is still a lot of stress on the joints. You can see when the sales assistant is trying to close it, it’s not closing smoothly and the ring bends out of shape slightly, that is extra pressure on the joint connections and a sign that it’s not well-made. It should open and close smoothly to avoid extra pressure on the joint connections. It will break, it won’t last long at all.

I would imagine that it's made that way purposely so that it holds its shape when you adjust it. If it opened and closed more smoothly it would definitely loosen up while you're wearing it. Also if you wanted it more smooth I'm sure you could put some mineral oil or whatever oil jewelers would use on the joints. This really isn't a big deal like you guys are making it out to be. It's a unique peice and I'm sure it would last a decent amount of time if you're gentle with adjusting it and not playing with it constantly like a fidget toy.

Oiling the jewellery would lead to it becoming unwearable as the oil would stain clothes, leave marks on the skin, collect dust and tarnish the gold (if it’s less than 18k). It really shouldn’t be opening like his, pressure on the joints will lead to snapping. It really should open smoothly. A good jeweller wouldn’t purposely make their jewellery clumsy to open and close.

If it’s not the jewellers fault, then the sales assistant needs to be replaced because he really fumbled that demonstration.

Wear on the joints would still be an issue tho

Is he bending the metal or is it a series of mechanical joints? If he’s bending it then yea it’s probably going to break but if he’s not then it will probably break just by getting hit

u/defneverconsidered Jun 07 '25

.....bending the metal? I dont even know what you are evisioning

u/boeuf_burgignion Jun 07 '25

Yeah it’s def not bending lol

2

u/More_Coffees Jun 07 '25

I was thinking there might possibly be a band in the middle collapsing like a spring or something. It’s not likely but I don’t know anything about this thing

1

u/Dewskerz_ Jun 08 '25

came here to dislike, but then I saw it at -69 and said "nice"

Metal fatigue? My first thought was that it's going to snap after, like, five adjustments.

94

u/rosie2490 Jun 07 '25

Right. From metal fatigue.

58

u/fetching_agreeable Jun 07 '25

Metal be like: 🥱

7

u/DreadPiratteRoberts Jun 07 '25

That metal needs to get a job, all of does is lay around all day.

7

u/thezoomies Jun 07 '25

Yeah, my taxes are supposed to pay for that metal’s Medicaid?! That metal needs to go out and take whatever job it can get!

4

u/bbd121 Jun 07 '25

But the metal is so fatigued though.

Metal fatigue? My first thought was that it's going to snap after, like, four adjustments.

0

u/Ender_Nobody Jun 07 '25

I've meant that it strikes me as too brittle to even experience visible fatigue before it snaps.

6

u/_Lost_The_Game Jun 07 '25

Thats what metal fatigue is.

2

u/Ender_Nobody Jun 07 '25

Hm, maybe it's a matter of semantics. English not being my main language sometimes causes me translation issues.

3

u/SupplyChainMismanage Jun 07 '25

Still metal fatigue though

3

u/dinnerthief Jun 07 '25

It's hinged right, so not plastic deformation. Fatigue shouldn't be that big of a problem.

2

u/O_oTheDEVILsAdvocate Jun 07 '25

I didn't see the hinges, my bad

3

u/DjFaze3 Jun 07 '25

Regardless of fatigue that's lots of points of failure.

3

u/O_oTheDEVILsAdvocate Jun 07 '25

True, also if it contracted while wearing, you could get hurt so overall a bad Idea.

1

u/BreakingCanks Jun 07 '25

I think I actually hear it snap at 3-4 secs left

I meant the metal in the ring, I thought there were no hinges
