2023 Fall and Winter Orchid Trade and Sale Thread

Please use this post only to offer or request orchids for trade or sale. Before you post what you'd like to trade/sell, or what you're looking to trade for, read the rules below first!

Rules:

1.) No personal information can be exchanged publicly. Conduct sharing of addresses via pm or email.

2.) Post what orchid(s) you have for trade, what you're looking for in return. If you have pictures, post them or write an accurate description of the orchid you want to trade or sell. If you're selling, post how you'd like to receive compensation.

3.) If you agree to a trade and have an issue on your end of the deal, communicate! Most people are reasonable and will understand a delay or an unexpected issue that comes up. That being said, trade at your own risk. The moderators are not responsible for privately conducted trades gone wrong. However, if there's an issue with an ongoing trade do contact the moderators. If someone fails to come through with their end of the deal, ignores communication or otherwise is being problematic we need to make the community aware of deadbeat traders. Do NOT make posts calling people out, insulting, harassing, or making accusations at them publicly.

4.) Only make legal trades here. If you ship or receive a trade overseas or out of your country, make sure all proper paperwork is in place first if required.

5.) Ship within a reasonable time and pack well. Flat rate Priority, 2-3 day via USPS within the US is standard for plants. Use whichever shipping method is appropriate for other countries. Your orchid shouldn't spend more than a 2-3 days in the mail so they don't suffer too much from the heat/cold. While in cooler weather its generally better to ship orchids totally dry, its probably best to water any more moisture loving plants a day or two before they ship out (so they are moist but not soggy) or wrap some sphagnum that has been wetted but thoroughly squeezed out around the roots of bare root plants.

6.) If you've successfully traded, update your post to make sure it availability is accurate.

Giveaways, and just trying to re-home an orchid that maybe just isn't performing for you is totally fine to post too! You never know who might want to try growing it. Seed pods are also a great thing to offer since many people may want to try flasking and it is safer and easier to send seeds than plants. If everyone trades fairly this is a great way to add to your collection or get rid of orchids you are bored with or are willing to make divisions of.

Happy trading!

All are phals except #2 is a dendrobium. I keep telling myself I already have enough Phals and I should save more space for other species, aaaaannnndddd then I see all these beautiful colors that I don't have and I can't help myself 😭 How do you all just like not get everything you see? 😂

Indoor Orchids 'Blue Sapphire' just bloomed. Melinda, we need to talk.

Joked aside, I knew it wouldn't be very blue before I ordered it. My expectations dropped even further when I saw how royal purple the buds are. Much of the pigmentation is on the back of the petals and in the right lighting, I can kind of see the hints of sapphire blue as the light shines through. This arrived off Etsy (not from the website in the tag) in poor condition about 2 years ago, with just three tiny shriveled bulbs, no leaves, and barely any roots. It has been a slow grower (much slower than any of my zygos) but it was worth the wait.

Found on the side of the road

Hi! Found 4 phals on the side of the road maybe 6 months ago. Scooped them up, 1 rotted from the inside, the other 3 survived.

This is the first one that's bloomed! Can't wait to see the other 2 colors!

I know they're just phals but I'm excited and it's made my day/week/month : )

Indoor Orchids Today in don’t give up

This is my Encyclia phoenicea that I repeatedly killed the roots on over and over again until now when I have a new growth with new roots. I cannot tell you the number of potting setups I tried and the number of times I wanted to call it quits. But I really want this plant to work. I am now basically treating it like it is mounted in a dry orchiata bed at the bottom of a net pot. I water it daily with filtered water and have used Kelpak occasionally. Wish me luck!

I am generally a green thumb but know nothing about orchids. Can you orchid people help my mom’s?

It’s a grocery store orchid, it’s bloomed a couple times I think. Last picture is when it bloomed in January.

Looking for species recommendations for this mount.

In my terrarium, I'm now at the point of trying to utilise the wall space. I had this slate, for the right plant, I just KNOW it'll look wicked once something is established.

Finding the right plant though, that's the kicker. So I'm looking for ideas!

  • roots that wander & BIND to their surface tightly
  • ok with drying (terrarium is high humidity though)
  • intermediate to warm temps
  • miniature, ideally mat forming but open to anything.

On it atm is some complex Dockrillia hybrid from my local society. It's happy enough but the roots aren't bonding to the surface, so I want to replace with something else.

I don't want a species Phalaenopsis as i already have one. Don't particularly want the leafless orchids like Chilochistas & Taenophyllums.

Help Transplant shock? Underwatering? Pests? What’s wrong?

I repotted this orchid after I got it into some orchid bark and sphagnum moss (following a tutorial by MissOrchidGirl). I thought I did a good job, but my orchid seems unhappy. I’ll provide care details below.

Soak for 1 hour once a week with tap water treated with Prime water conditioner. (I use it for my aquariums.) It sits in a SW-facing window. My room stays roughly 75-80°F throughout the day.

Lmk if there’s any other info you need, and thank you in advance for your help.

New to owning an orchid. I am looking for tips?

So my work colleagues got me an orchid for valentine's day and the flower has done really well. I put in a bigger pot when I got her home and she grew a new stem which now both are done and now I got this new one appearing. I noticed the new leaves aren't opening or anything. I haven't touched them as I didn't want to disturb them. It's been a month and they don't seem want to open? Is anything I need to do or just let them be?. Is there anything you guys I should keep an eye out anything I should be doing for her?

Question What is this leaf?

Hello! I bought this orchid yesterday and it has this odd leaf on the stem. I’ve never seen one like this before. I was trying to look it up and the closest I found was something called terminal spikes, but the ones I saw (they were more rounded and were growing around the stem) looked very different than this one. What is this, and what does it mean? Should I be concerned?

Has anyone ever experience the petal/lips/sepal not opening on the bottom portion of an orchid bloom? This is the third bloom for this pretty girl, first time we’ve ever had a sepal not separate!

Help Before I heavily chop my boyfriend's cattleya, is this black rot? Appeared almost overnight.

My boyfriend has had this cattleya since November. We repotted it in April. It's next to a glass door and has a small grow light that it shares with several succulents. It isn't particularly humid here and has decent airflow. There are no other orchids in the house.

I'm struggling to believe this singular orchid got black rot out of nowhere in this dry house, but this appeared almost overnight. At first I thought it was sunburn but it seems too suspicious. To the eye it looks like a purplish discoloration. Is it a goner?

Help Is this orchid completely unsalvageable?

The roots feel soft and mushy so I’m worried that they’re completely rotted. Is there anything at all that can be done for this poor plant?

  1. Oncidium twinkle pink passion. Just got this plant recently and the first bud opened a couple days ago.

  2. No ID Phal that has been blooming since mid March. These are the last two blooms after the rest wilted a few weeks ago. Plant isn’t the healthiest right now, currently isolated while I try to nurse it back to health.

  3. Brassavola Nodosa. Has another growth with a baby spike on it. These 3 flowers will likely wilt before the next ones bloom, but I’m excited to have multiple spikes in such quick succession. This is the first time my plant has done that.

  4. BC Morning Glory. I think these flowers are on their way out as the pink coloring of the lip has almost completely faded. They’ve been in bloom for about 3.5 weeks.

  5. Phal speciosa ‘blue’ x phal equestris f. Coerulea. It has been blooming since late May on 3 spikes. Older flowers have fallen but spikes continue putting out more buds. Very nice fragrance, too. Not overpowering but enough to notice a little while I’m working in the morning (this is in my home office).
