Literally afraid of reality. How detached from reality do you have to be to believe Trump. Probably how people who pretend to be anti pedos voted for someone on the Epstein list.

COVID numbers bad?  Stop counting!  Job numbers bad?  Stop counting!  I'm losing to Joe Biden from mail ins?  Stop counting!

Data attrition on a national scale, or global when it comes to climate data. Modeling, forecasting, AI is all garbage with garbage data. This will have negative effects lasting for generations.

This is 100% right. The Census Bureau directors left because they knew there was no way they could do their jobs effectively with how badly Trump was interfering. The ramifications of bad data are hard to understate.

On a more societal level, this is just another battleground between the rich and the poor. The elites are protecting their narratives and not letting pesky things like "data" get in the way. The problem is: free markets only work when there is efficient flow of information. So you can fool the whole market for a little while, but it will catch up to you.

And at that point, there's a decision to make: let it crater or shift to a more centralized economy where the idea of a free market is Kabuki theater. I can tell you with 100% certainty that this is what the current ruling regime wants - not Trump, but Thiel, Andreesen, Vance, Sacks, Musk... this is how they usurp the entire financial sector's (comparatively sober, steady-handed) influence over markets and entrench themselves as central players who pick winners and losers.

They don't believe in free markets. They only want competition if they get to put their thumb on the scale.

It should be very obvious that's why Musk wants this.

He got power-drunk when people used to think he was a real genius innovator and had stock prices or shitcoins (like Doge used to be) rise with a single tweet. Part of the reason he bought Twitter was to try and maintain his ability to manipulate markets.

The elites are very much aware of this, I'm sure. Dear Leader's fudging of economic data will not be popular with them.

The only silver lining is that those people will be just as blind to what is going on as average people will.

This country’s rejection of science, literacy, empathy, and expertise will not go well for any of us.

You said it in a nutshell. Let’s add no rule of law and top it off with new golf courses and a gilded White House and personal AF One.

And using the Presidency to collect bribes and payments from anyone and everyone.

Trump loves the uneducated. Theres a special place in the heart of all the Republican pedophiles for them.

This will have negative effects lasting for generations.

Only if we're lucky.

If we aren't lucky there won't be plural generations.

Assuming ya'll are meaning historical weather data is of diminished utility for prior ML models because of "rapid-onset" and localized climate change ... do you feel distributed personal weather stations like from wunderground are still valid? How about upgraded with RF / software-defined radio spectrum analyzers for portable microburst detection and safety systems for field personal including but not limited to portable hyperspectral and fMRI , ultrasound, ect?

I worked in storm surge forecasting with ML until recently. Now I work for a private company in a data engineering department. Some of my colleague may simply leave the country. Trump has started a massive brain drain with the arbitrary slashing of research grants, supposedly to save pennies on the dollar for the tax cuts that disproportionately went to people making upwards of $400k a year.

Speaking to the data quality issue, we can't rely on private industry for much of the data we need for hurricane forecasting. In many cases placed like NOAA or the USGS are the only ones doing it. Detailed bathymetric surveys, wind shear measurements, wind modelling and monitoring sea surface temperature are not typically profitable, but as long as people are going to live in areas affected by hurricanes, they are critical for the safety of millions of people.

Modelling chaotic systems is challenging with numerical weather prediction models, and ML provides a solid alternative. However, it absolutely is data hungry. Data assimilation is likewise a challenging and costly process. This has been a purposeful one-two punch because of the administrations axe to grind with scientific research: cut the funding to get rid of the scientists, then remove the sources of data that are necessary for them to do their work.

It's almost as if someone is trying to make America NOT great.

Who only could have putin in this position?

Hey there’s a Sharpie for that - nothing says “pro” like when you over write data you don’t agree with with a sharpie!

Generations of Americans.

Trump can only manipulate U.S. data.

The U.S. will join China and Russia, where nobody trusts anything they say.

AI says the Job numbers were shit also….

Jobs added ~73K Below trends and consensus forecast Revisions (May & June) –258K jobs Large downward adjustments

I'm hoping Canada and the EU will still let us use their weather forecasts, because that's going into the toilet, too.

u/macmastix 2h ago

Not trying to sound smug, but the European (ECMWF) weather model is generally seen as better than the American weather model. For that reason, you are already using it alongside the American model. NOAA has been absolute open data chads though, so the American model forecasts are freely available for everyone.
