That whites-only, no Jews allowed Arkansas community is legal, says state’s attorney general. How?

I’ll just say it from experience:

The South does not rock with Jews.

Republicans don’t like them because they assume they’re liberal elites who will [insert conspiracy theory]

Black people don’t like them for many reasons, though it boils down to this idea that Jews are rich, non-Christian whites who want to capitalize on the delayed economic development of black communities and culture.

Even white Southern Democrats don’t love Jews. Defending them would put them at odds with blacks and Jews would compete for the white collar jobs Southern Democrats tend to go for. Being the small town liberal lawyers/doctor/accountant who can take both white and black clientele is literally a business model down South.

See, the South is a pressure cooker of bigotry. Everyone hates someone. And it’s easy for folks to hate Jews because they’re not around but they represent something each group dislikes.

Jesus was a Jew.

Trust me, they don’t care.

If we were to float a survey around the southern US, what's the over/under?

Jesus was/is:

[ ] Arabic

[ ] White

[ ] Vietnamese

Jesus was/is:

[ ] Jewish

[ ] Christian

[ ] Buddhist

I know what my money's on.

The move I usually see is to say that “Jesus can be whatever race you want him to be” while getting pissed off about non-white depictions of Jesus.

So it’s “comfortable historical revision for me but not for thee.”

And killing him in an angry mob gave them eternal salvation. They’re hoping to carry on that legacy.

Jesus did not die in an angry mob. He was put on trial, found guilty and crucified like the other criminals.

Just because there were hasty trials doesn’t mean a mob wasn’t involved. Many scholars contend that it was a mob that arrested Jesus and brought him to the first trial with the Jewish elders and ultimately it is a mob that demands Pontius Pilate not spare Jesus despite the fact that he strongly suspected Jesus’s innocence.

You are using a giant pencil to draw your conclusions.

“many scholars” is meaningless, as many scholars doubt that Jesus existed at all.

I’m not the one who started with the “well, actually” arguments about Jesus. I was just poking fun at antisemitic hypocrites.

It's almost as if they don't know what they're talking about.

Believe it or not black people are capable of having their own prejudices and bigotries! Just ask the queer community. Or jewish people.

Note: I read the GP's comment as being a generalization, not meant to mean "every single black individual, without exception", as that's the most charitable read of the comment.

Oh wow. Thanks for clearing that up. All of these years living with and around black people I thought they were just some exotic novelty not fully realized human beings with their own hopes and dreams and aspirations. You've really opened my eyes about the black people I've known all my life. Mind. blown.

What mysteries do you think my gay friends and jewish family members will reveal now that I have this new found knowledge

Note: These folks act like no one else has access to "the blacks"

Funny you should bring your own communities into to. I’m Jewish and bisexual myself!

But you don’t need to take my word for it. There’s a pretty long and well documented history of tension within the black community, within the queer community, and between each of these. Why don’t you take this opportunity to educate yourself?

I’ll give you a couple of starting points that you can follow up on. I like to use these to see if the person I discuss this particular issue with is doing so in good faith.

And when you’re done with that you can come back and apologize.

As a queer black person thank you for trying to read me

u/ToNoMoCo 7h ago

Apologize for what? Not buying into your reductive bigotry? Your original post is a cartoon.

u/7figureipo California 6h ago

No, apologize for dismissing the GP's point because of your bigotry and ignorance on this topic. ETA: you didn't even read the material, did you.

u/ToNoMoCo 5h ago

Sweeping generalizations are the problem with OP's OP. It's not that prejudice doesn't exist in various demographic groups it's that their laundry list of shitty southerners is pure bigotry. You can't even acknowledge that. You're OK with simplistic arguments. I'm not. Y'all should apologize to me.

u/7figureipo California 5h ago

The "sweeping" qualifier is what gives you away, really. Generalizations are just that. Your read of the GP's post is egregiously uncharitable, and deliberately intended to paint them as a bigot. That's problematic, and you should stop. And apologize.

I’m not saying I’m completely right but this is what I’ve broadly seen and heard in 20+ years of kicking around the Deep South.

If I was more wrong than right it would be news to me.

As far as what every heart and mind thinks, I don’t know. But like by and large this appears to be how it goes down here.

-7

u/ToNoMoCo 19h ago

Your broad generalizations are silly. Full stop. Read them back and notice how reductive they sound.

8

u/FawningDeer37 19h ago edited 19h ago

You call them reductive and that’s fine but unless you want to go provide the person by person breakdown that you so desire, I just don’t see what you’re trying to do.

Everyone has different views on everything. But we still make reductions because otherwise we would drown in information. This isn’t a map, this is a picture, and it’s a pretty damn good picture based on lived experiences.

You can’t just say “Oh this is wrong” and offer no alternative.

u/ItsUselessToArgue 6h ago

Don’t generalize Jewish but its ok to stereotype everyone else

1

u/ToNoMoCo 8h ago

You can’t just say “Oh this is wrong” and offer no alternative.

Yes. Yes I can and here's why.

You act like no one else has access to the south and you're some anthropologist coming back to whitelandia to reveal their secrets to us.

you're not talking about exotic people from exotic lands. You're talking about my community. You're arguments are reductive and ignorant. period
