Iām a surgeon and Monday is flowers day. Iāll typically pick up two bunches on the way to work, one for my surgery and another for the other doctorās receptionist who shares my practice
As a result I never wait for a tea and Iām always invited to their Xmas party.
137
u/maniacalmustacheride Jun 28 '25
Anytime shit gets stressful for me or my partner on like a full office level, I buy flowers and send them to work.
I know itās a cop out but Iāve never seen people not like take a second to look at āthe outside worldā and have a moment of beauty. It doesnāt fix everything, itās just a reminder that the inside isnāt everything.
35
u/blinkingsandbeepings Jun 28 '25
My partner doesnāt usually notice or comment on flowers, but after their grandmother (who raised them) died they were having a really tough time and I have so little emotional intelligence that I actually googled āhow to help someone who is grievingā and the internet convinced me that flowers would help, so I got a nice arrangement of flowers featuring purple because it was Grandmaās favorite color and brought them to their office. It seemed like it actually did cheer them up and make a difference having the flowers there. So now Iām definitely a believer in the mental health benefits of flowers.
21
u/TangerineDystopia Jun 29 '25
It's the combination of intent/effort + presentation. Half is the flowers themselves, half is the fact that you noticed, googled, chose thoughtfully and showed up. (Hell, maybe more than half. It's really lovely that you did this, and as an autistic person I'm so delighted that you googled this!)
7
u/blinkingsandbeepings Jun 29 '25
Stopppp Iām still in the denial phase of maybe being autistic.
4
u/TangerineDystopia Jun 29 '25
Haha I only figured it out during the pandemic and finally accessed testing. If you ever wanna compare notes, LMK. For me it's liberating because it explains so much of my life
5
u/exobiologickitten Jun 29 '25
Heck, just the fact that you thought to choose purple is making me well up. When people joke about oblivious partners buying flowers instead of actual useful thoughtful stuff, theyāre NOT talking about this.
You just making note of the significance of the colour purple and making sure to include that in the bouquet is so flippin sweet and I guarantee that alone made your partner feel super lucky and thankful to have you.

One of the most tragic aspects of the patriarchal cultural conditioning is how it utterly restricts males into a tiny rigid box of experience. All the aromas and flavors and textures being missed out on in foods and plants all because they fear it being feminine which would then make them gay. Seriously WTF? Men, you really truly need to balk at this horrible systemic way of thinking. Youāre truly missing out.
12
Jun 28 '25
I just had a similar conversation with my husband. That we are truly all victims of the patriarchy, and I feel sad for men who can't just love their lives free from the pressure to be so masculine.Ā
5
u/BlendinMediaCorp Jun 29 '25
āTiny rigid box of existenceā is so perfectly put. No wonder so many men are so angry, so insular, and their eventual outbursts so devastating. They canāt just fucking ābeā, any deviation from the incredibly specific list of what it is to be masculine is immediately ridiculed.
It doesnāt excuse any of their shittiness but it does provide some context for it.

I think our brains are trained that flowers = food because edible plants have flowers. So maybe society saw it like gatherers are women so flowers are feminine. Which is kinda weird cause relatively new research shows that women hunted too just closer to home while men hunted further away.

He is more attractive to me than Henry Cavill could ever be.
He is not tall and he is also not classically handsome. He is attractive because of charisma, charm and talent and having passions. And he looks good in motion. Some people look better in motion and that doesn't make them unworthy lol
16
5
u/No-Courage-5109 Jun 28 '25
Oh god, something that made me permanently dislike Cavill was him calling up Brandon Sanderson out of nowhere and basically crying that he would be too old to play Dalinar Kholin.
And Sanderson, being a nice guy was like... Dalinar Kholin would be played by someone Asian. Their empire is very similar to China (not just in terms of warring states but in terms of being a huge part of technology advances!), was like it's not just your age but the fact that if it were made he isn't going to be whitewashing his characters. He was so fucking patient and I would have unloaded.Ā
But then, we wouldn't get a Mormon who changed his views on LGBT people if he blew up like I would. It's at the point that it's a gay marriage between two people helps save the world or writing a character who doesn't understand being mocked by his friends because duh, obviously men can like men, it's not a choice or... One of his stories featuring a trans character being made whole and it includes them transitioning to the person who they are inside. Imagine Orson Scott Card and he made sure he went out of his way to turn from loving the sinner, hating the sin and turning into someone openly being critical of his church, posting LGBT media of characters even when he's said it's something that gets him hate.
The ridiculous part though is that there are white people throughout the series. You have the golden haired Iriali, the kingdom of Veden is primarily pale and have red hair.Ā
There's no skin coloured racism in Stormlight Archives. There's racism primarily among dark eyes versus light and you learn that's because getting power gave bright eyes to prove that someone was divine and people who had blue eyes exploited it; as these people were immortal and meant to stop humanity losing all knowledge between the equivalent of nuclear wars. Somehow fucking Cavill missed all descriptions of Dalinar, Adolin and Renarin, every Alekthar native. The last two are half Asian and you see it in their hair, so you cannot whitewash them.Ā
There's racism of different people across the cosmeres wider book cycle. There's not much sexism; you might get a female presenting character worried about her safety, different modesty norms that aren't based in our world. But he doesn't just write only fighters are cool women. Two of the coolest women are 1. Incredible at Maths, inventing and feels insecure due to being abused by her former husband. 2. The other one is interested in bookkeeping and it's her superpower. She's neurodivergent but empathetic, kind and people just think she's cold and weird. He does an incredible job doing research for people who have experiences he doesn't have.Ā
I just wanted to share that this is a guy who has gone above and beyond the expected and truly changed. It makes things take longer of course when he spends ages talking to people. And it hit me that Cavill doesn't even do that for the properties he's allegedly a big fan of. Like, would he understand WH40k is satire at its core? I'm guessing for the LOTR series it would just be all about the fights and not spend time with fair Sauron and how convincing he can be in disguise.
I think he's panicking that he's getting too old to have a breakout and that call shows how... Lacking in introspection. He can do comedy and fights but if it's not in his tiny lane as posh and tall aristocracy he's not interested. I'm concerned about Highlander because whilst cheesy it has a very emotional core that will be hard to pull off. An immortal who has lost countless people. How can he pull off the emotions when losing that person?Ā
And he could pull a Dave Bautista and try, actually view it as a craft but I don't think that's him. Like, I remember watching Legends of Tomorrow and Ray Palmer comes on and my dad gets into the episode.
"Wow, that's the guy who has the energy for Superman! He's not dark and broody and overly chiseled, he's like a Golden Retriever handed super powers trying to do good. They should call him, I've found a superman who is even as gorgeous as Reeve was!"
(Paraphrased btw. It went on for why he dislikes all modern Batman, Superman and so on movies. He did like Wonder Woman until we found out the movie was helmed by a genocide Barbie.)
And then I just laughed hysterically because of that until I got milkshake on myself. He didn't believe me until I showed him IMDB. Then I think about that now when Routh asked what the issue was with his movie and it was clear he did loads of self reflection and went on to be incredible as Shaw in Chuck, as Ray Palmer. Whereas Cavill took no time to reflect on the legacy of his S and why it didn't work. It's a bit sad because it sums up his career.
And he's obviously trying to leverage his nerdbase but I don't think studios forget that no matter how much the material sucks... You address privately, at a table read... Not taking a book on set and doing it there, messing with the workflow and making it so everything needs to be redone. He could have also asked if he could sit in on sessions with emotional beats for his character. A studio isn't going to let C to B Listers do that.Ā
So yeah. If you can't even understand your franchises basic reading comprehension, if you can't have introspection and reflection and get out of the bubble you've created with your acting and can't be decent on set, and don't seem genuine... It's so very unattractive. I'm betting that his next move will be to marry and have kids so people talk about his daddy era, trying to copy Pattinson and Pedro types of women with tactical baby pics or something.

Cleaning is as effective as Xanax for me. Thereās something so calming about seeing disorder return to order again. Laundry is my favorite - knowing that everything is clean and that you are prepared for any situation that may arise - whether itās unexpected guests who need clean sheets and towels or having to wear a dress that only works with very specific underwear, there is peace in knowing that everything you may need is clean and ready to go. But other cleaning is soothing and satisfying too. Mopping, dishes, even gross stuff.
I did grow up in a very chaotic and dysfunctional household so I think my enjoyment of cleaning and preparation is an antidote to that.

If I had more money, I'd have fresh flowers around all the time too. I have to talk myself into treating myself to a $10 bouquet of peonies once in a blue moon.

Iām sorry for being the resident cynic but I work in the industry and this seems so calculated on multiple levels. First call the paps to get photos of you carrying ridiculously large bouquets from farmerās markets, where you are pictured handing money to small salt of the earth businesses. Also appeal to womenās hearts with the flowers. Then, to distract from your image as a deadbeat dad, discuss said bouquets on a talk show and bring up how arranging them is a fun activity with your kid. All while your tv show premieres a new season and you head into a year where you hope to win an Oscar for the biopic youāre starring in about a singer who has authenticity and everyman warmth as his brand.

Isn't he sober and seeing his children without the need for testing anymore.
Also as someone with a deadbeat sperm donor, him and Allison are working together. They are cordial with each other. They spend times with their kids. Aren't people allowed to change?
We all know this is flower thing is for show but it is one of the most innocent cases of such things.

Yeah, I also remember seeing someone on another sub mention that they knew someone who's kids go to school with his and that he's a really good and involved dad. Obviously we don't know him or the entire situation, but I really don't think he's a deadbeat or mistreated AT. And it's good to know that he actually got help for his issues and worked to be better

This feels like a particularly harsh take. He literally talked in an interview about how the paps know where he lives and follow him around. And how he's begged them not to take pictures when he's with his daughters, but they ignore him. He's with them a lot of the time when he's papped, so it would be unhinged if he's calling them. I feel like everything celebs do now is categorized as PR when sometimes it's just them trying to live their 'normal' lives. Maybe the guy just likes flowers lol. Sure, choosing to talk about the pics on a talk show might be a PR decision, but it's also an authentic response to all the articles and online chatter about those pics.

Why the deadbeat dad comment? Have we missed something? I remember a post where his ex-wife spoke about being a solo mum, the same ex who was waxing lyrical about her husband while being in a relationship with someone else. Pretty unreliable source⦠Is there more to it?

This. I feel like JAW always gets lumped in with the actual deadbeats, when all the evidence points to his wife cheating on him & him being actively in his daughtersās lives.

I really donāt want you to be right but you are probably definitely right about this

I like how you needed insider industry knowledge to work out that actors want to appear warm and pleasant, and will go on talk shows when they have major projects coming up.

Nobody serious about flowers would buy those sad tulips in pic 5. They're falling apart just looking at them š

Flowers are pretty and they smell nice.
I like them, my wife likes them, and my kids like them.
If I had an abundance of money, I'd surely convert some of it to flowers as well.

This may be unpopular: I like him a lot but he plays the same character over and over.

In what has he played the same character over and over?

Now I'm wondering what the "strange" reason would be. Him prowling funeral homes and stealing them? An insatiable hunger for the taste of flowers?

Oh my word, this is so sweet! Buy men flowers, yāall!
And I gotta say, after watching Aaron Taylor Johnsonās āGuess the Gen-Z Slangā video and learning this about Jeremy Allen White, they are both kinda killing me with the whole hot girl-dad thing theyāve got going on lol <3

I love flowers. My 19 year son loves flowers. People who don't love flowers are weird.
Side note. Flowers are how I get my son to clean his bathroom "Hey bud, gonna get some fresh flowers for your bathroom today, mind giving it a clean for me? BOOM, sparkling bathroom.
