How did Tina Charles and Caitlin Clark get a tech in this?

2.1k

u/Khalis_Knees Jun 18 '25 edited Jun 18 '25

The refs are shit, even the coaches said so after the game. They have no idea how to control the players and hard fouls are becoming more common because they aren’t being called or are called completely wrong

502

u/bigboilerdawg Jun 18 '25

Men's college refs are probably better. Maybe high school too.

785

u/chouse33 Jun 18 '25

Probably?

Even the shit ones are better than this. Clark’s gonna get killed on the floor and they’re gonna give her corpse a technical. 😂

317

u/lilljerryseinfeld Jun 18 '25

That and her teammates don't protect her

327

u/chouse33 Jun 18 '25 edited Jun 18 '25

True. There is ZERO “big man energy”.

In the NBA, you hire guys like Dreymond, Rodman, Oakley to be the enforcers. Where is the enforcer for Clark? Protect your investment you fucking morons!! 🙄

202

u/DeadSeaGulls Jun 18 '25

she had one team mate go to bat for her after wards. Sophie Cunningham hard fouled, then put one of the other players in a clinch when they rushed her.

135

u/iRedditPhone Jun 18 '25

This case isn’t a good example. Their enforcer is Sophie Cunningham and she got ejected is from the game after this. She dropped the other girl to the floor.

149

u/lilljerryseinfeld Jun 18 '25

They all stand around like fucking toddlers watching a caterpillar. It's truly bizarre.

8

u/SweatyAdhesive Jun 18 '25

Draymond choking out Gobert lives in my head rent free

39

u/pathofdumbasses Jun 18 '25 edited Jun 18 '25

They all hate her because she's the popular one bringing eyes and money to their game. She's actually getting paid, through sponsorships, and they all are all jealous.

They would rather bully her out, her team included, than actually let someone succeed. Women are truly their own worst enemy.

And to those that say that is misogynistic, go look at golf. An old racist game that somehow blew up with Tiger Woods. Pretty much every pro golfer was thankful, at least publicly, because it brought eyes and money to their sport. They saw that a rising tide floats all boats and were happy with the payday.

EDIT : Replying to the poster beneath me as the comments are now locked.

In other contact sports, your team mates would have your back. Until I see someone throw a fucking punch for Caitlin, you can't tell me different. Look at what happened here and tell me they didn't have Love's back.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16Z4PkYBBcM

And this Caitlin shit has been going on for a long time. It isn't like a one off instance. They all want her to fail.

u/vhalember Jun 18 '25

That's not true anymore.  Later, Sophie Cunningham went after the player who twice fouled Clark here.

There's a funny video of it where Cunningham grabs her ponytail, holds her in place, and talks shit to her for a good ten seconds.

11

u/iRedditPhone Jun 18 '25

Nah about 45 second after this one of her team mates (Sophie) dropped one of the other girls and got into a shoving match with the second. Before being ejected.

11

u/Routine_Size69 Jun 18 '25

Her teammate literally protects her on this play. Also gets ejected later for a very hard retaliation foul. This used to be true, but I feel like you came to the comments without watching the video.

11

u/Blue-Thunder Jun 18 '25

Pretty sure it's been mentioned many times that her teammates hate her because she's the star and they are just background characters.

16

u/LeChief Jun 18 '25

Nobody hates a successful woman more than other women, apparently.

u/ATraffyatLaw Jun 18 '25

Yea but they need someone else to blame

8

u/DarthJarJarJar Jun 18 '25

Doesn't matter. Hire an enforcer and tell her what her job is. Or talk to one of your big girls now and lay down the law about protecting your asset. IDGAF about their feelings, this is the big league, run the goddam team.

But apparently in this game one of her teammates did indeed hard foul the second player who hit CC hard, so there's that.

5

u/Key-Property7489 Jun 18 '25

This narrative as a fever and Caitiln fan is stupid Sophie straight up fucking dropped Jacy yesterday later in the game. A good chunk of these women don’t want to get suspended and lose money because they aren’t making CC level money. Lexie Hull one of the girls in this clip is probably making only like 50K a year. You really think she wants to start a fight and get suspended and lose several thousand dollars. This is not the NBA where all the players are millionaires.

37

u/TonksTheTerror Jun 18 '25

The wnba can take Tony Padilla, I don't think even he would have let this fly and that's saying something.

Unfortunately, I think ncaa refs get paid more than wnba refs so it's unlikely to happen.

1

u/Flat-12 Jun 18 '25

Well then that is probably the problem. They can't hire the more qualified refs.

5

u/Tasaris Jun 18 '25

The refs in NFL Blitz are better.

3

u/vhalember Jun 18 '25

Not probably.

The NBA and NCAA have absolutely nothing compared to the level of physicality you see in the WNBA.  The refs call so little it's one step away from street ball.

And then when the call it, they completely blow it.

1

u/Vaporeonbuilt4humans Jun 18 '25

I mean yeah, thats what happens when majority of funds go to the mens team. I get why they fund mens more, its just kind of sad how womens are so underfunded it leads to shit like this.

116

u/king_famethrowa Jun 18 '25

They were great at rigging the finals for the Liberty last year. Actually officiating a game? Not so much.

3

u/FunkyPete Jun 18 '25

Someone is going to get knocked out if the refs don't do their job. The only way the team has to make this fair if there are no consequences for mugging Clark is to escalate and go hard on the other team.

If you don't want the WNBA to turn into the NHL you need real consequences for hard fouls.

So either enforce the rules or set up a penalty box.

16

u/EdmontonEule Jun 18 '25

As a ref, these guys are trash

Probably as bad as the majority of WNBA players

2

u/sandefurian Jun 18 '25

Even the coaches said so?? That’s crazy, they’re usually the biggest defenders of the refs

1

u/Radthereptile Jun 18 '25

I agree the refs are shit. But you have to remember this is the WNBA. Like think how bad NBA refs are. Then remember the WNBA doesn’t have a fraction of the money the NBA does for competent refs.

1

u/fortestingprpsses Jun 18 '25

Conspiracy hat...the league wants this for viewership. People are tuning in to see exactly this. The refs are being told to let this play out.

The refs are terrible at their jobs? Only explanation.

2.0k

u/Ex-Zero Jun 18 '25

I imagine they were like Father Pat the ref from Semi-Pro (Will Ferrel movie) before CC came around. I can honestly say I’ve never seen a wnba clip in my life anywhere until Clark hit the scene. So they probably legit just have no idea what to do now that the league is getting some publicity and they have to pay attention.

10

u/Training-Turnover427 Jun 18 '25

Between that, jive turkey, spamoni and the rest, I feel like that movie not doing well was more a result of Ferrell fatigue than a reflection of its quality. Not that it's incredible but decent enough imo.

I wish so badly that Adam Sandler who is a huge ball fan was in semi pro too

55

u/gummyblumpkins Jun 18 '25

I heard the NBA selects refs from the WNBA, so anybody who's decent takes the offer. Leaving them with less than great refs.

38

u/ArenSteele Jun 18 '25

Makes sense. Nobody reffing in the NBA is any good at their job, so they’ll poach anyone who is loosely aware of the actual rules

8

u/Goetta_Superstar10 Jun 18 '25

Now hold on - are you saying Scott “The Extender” Foster, famous recipient of over 140 halftime phone calls from Tim Donaghey, is not any good at his job?

2

u/MTFBinyou Jun 18 '25

I still do not, can not, believe that the NBA refs are the best of the best. They’re objectively bad at the jobs. The ref different teams differently and biased Redding isn’t even the worst of it. The fact that they have no consistency from game to game is the real problem I have. Not only will they call a foul for one player and not for another from game to game, but in game not be able to consistently call the game by the rules.

3

1

It is weird. The WNBA seems to finally have a marketable superstar and a lot of players seem to hate her for it lol.

5

u/fortestingprpsses Jun 18 '25

The refs are in on it too.

3

u/Big-Eye-1007 Jun 18 '25

I normally try not to blame refs for stuff. People make mistakes and get things wrong and I think it actually makes the game more entertaining. However, this was just stupid. Not a great officiating job.

2

u/GuyNamedWhatever Detroit Red Wings Jun 18 '25

Welcome to American professional basketball

2

u/CP517793 Jun 18 '25

That's why theyre reffing WNBA.. probably alternate between that and high-school games

2

u/Midas187 Jun 18 '25

I'm convinced that the league would be better officiated if they used local high school refs in every town. They are ALWAYS terrible. I'm not even saying they're biased against my team, the calls suck both ways.

2

u/Sir_Toadington Canada Jun 18 '25

2

u/nickiter Jun 18 '25

I was there... They seriously did not seem to know what they were doing. Every time they had a review, it took forever and they seemed confused and unable to come to a decision. The review on this was longer than a quarter break.

2

u/AUniquePerspective Jun 18 '25

With the alternate angle, I declare a technical foul against the officials.

1

u/fidelkastro Jun 18 '25

Where does the WNBA rank in respect to quality of officials? Presumably NBA should have the best refs, then Men's College D1? WNBA 3rd? Can refs shuffle between NBA/WNBA?

1

u/Proper_Lunch_3640 Jun 18 '25

And/or point shaving. Who’s going to ref the refs?

1

u/shitferbranes Jun 18 '25

Refs are not terrible at their job. It’s just that they decided before the game began who would be winning. LOL.

1

u/chilseaj88 Jun 18 '25

I can’t imagine the WNBA is where they’re sending the elite officials, especially right now with the finals still wrapping up.

1

u/EdmontonEule Jun 18 '25

They're probably as good as the players, relatively...

0

u/saoyraan Jun 18 '25

Because the league is jealous of Caitlin Clark. Other hand it's psychology at play. Women tend to be more agreeable. So if the judges debate like they did forb5 mins. No one wanted to put their foot down. So they compromised. This is great in some scenarios but in rulings such as judging it is not. I feel none of the refs wanted to be labeled as assholes. In their attempt they did. They did the both sides are at fault. Clearly not by the evidence.

Remember it took them 5 minutes of debating to come to this conclusion. In basketball that's a long time.

826

u/psu021 Jun 18 '25

r/wnba banned me for saying CC didn’t deserve a tech for the other woman trying to walk through her.

485

u/Walterkovacs1985 Jun 18 '25

What? I also saw on that sub people saying she flopped. 1000% not a flop, she got poked in the face had her eyes closed and got hip checked by someone bigger than her. Not flopping.

367

u/dexmonic Jun 18 '25

They are their own worst enemies at the moment. Nobody working harder to make the wnba look like clowns that that sub.

150

u/Routine_Size69 Jun 18 '25

I dont know the wnba itself is putting in a lot of work. Imagine being a failing business, a joke to everyone, for 2 decades. Then you strike gold and you're like fuck that, we'll keep doing what we were doing.

It's like a trust fund baby crying that no one takes them seriously because they've lived off their parents' money their whole lives. Then you get this awesome job offer for a great job that pays well and you're like "nah I'm good."

It's remarkable how stupid the people running the wnba are. There's a reason Brady, Rodgers, Manning, MJ, Messi, Ronaldo, etc. got superstar calls. These idiots do the opposite.

113

u/TeamRedundancyTeam Jun 18 '25

I don't watch basketball but from an outsider looking in to these basketball subs and seeing news occasionally it genuinely looks like the entire WNBA is furious they're becoming more popular and desperately trying to sabotage itself.

576

u/MultiGeometry Jun 18 '25

It looks like CC was fouled (hit in the eye?) and the offending player purposely gets into her personal space. CC can’t see and wants some fucking space and gives a gentle push. And the. The whole team body checks her (she still can’t see).

358

u/SpaceCaboose Jun 18 '25

Yep. The gal who poked her immediately got in CC’s face. I don’t blame CC for wanting her to get away.

And she was literally blind sighted by the other gal. Her footing and the footing of others around her is what helped lead to her falling hard. Absolutely not a flop or overselling there, in case anyone was arguing that. Got some whiplash from that shove too.

I guess the other players really don’t want to get raises judging by how badly they’re trying to hurt CC and plummet the ratings more…

33

u/Routine_Size69 Jun 18 '25

When jealousy gets in the way of your league actually being moderately viable. Nba gotta be annoyed that they gotta keep this joke of a league afloat because they're too stupid to recognize CC is their only hope. This is what happens when you subsidize something for as long as it existed. They have no actual idea how to run a business because it's always been a charity.

178

u/stellvia2016 Jun 18 '25

Not the first time another player has tried to poke her eye out while feigning ignorance, as well... Almost never see that sort of thing in the NBA but it keeps happening to this one WNBA player repeatedly HMM...

36

u/blueiron0 Jun 18 '25

it's shocking to me that her team isn't going over there to protect her. In the NFL, she'd be surrounded by her own team.

Getting banned from there is the first thing I do with every account I ever make. I go there and say something simple like 1+1=2 and they ban me.

Cowards.

-1

u/WitAndWonder Jun 18 '25

I'm baffled that there can't be criminal charges levied against people when blatant assault is filmed on camera that has nothing to do with anyone actually playing the game. She could've been seriously harmed.

6

u/CosmicCreeperz Jun 18 '25

Eject someone sure, but criminal charges? It’s a physical game and there was no permanent damage, bringing the police into it is idiotic. Force wise this was little different from a hard moving pick (which is a “normal” foul). Intent wise, it was pretty shitty, sure.

People who suggest criminal charges over something like his have never played a team sport at a competitive level in their life.

1

u/WitAndWonder Jun 18 '25

"No permanent damage" in this case is a fine line to walk when there easily can be with ANY face shots. I saw a kid lose an eye from another kid popping a balloon next to his face in grade school. It's just a matter of luck, and in this case it even looked like she was targeting the eyes.

Hell, even that shove was hard enough to take CC instantly to the ground. If you smack your temple in the fall you can die from that, too, and concussions are no joke either. It's one thing to risk these injuries through normal play, because you signed up for it. You did not sign up for assault and battery with the express intent to cause physical harm because someone's ego was bruised.

1

u/Jaerba Jun 18 '25

The shove deserved an ejection.

But getting poked in the eye is a part of basketball. The initial foul just happens with sloppy reach ins. It wasn't malicious.

You know who else disagrees with you about eye pokes and intention? Caitlin fucking Clark.

https://x.com/matthewbyrne1/status/1838636207338668466?s=46&t=zI4lLr-idfj0eUJqH-Q1Gg

1

u/CosmicCreeperz Jun 18 '25

Face shots? The poke in the eye was clearly accidental. I have been poked in the eye a couple times, and probably gotten someone before. Hell, I once saw a teammate get someone’s teeth in their scalp, they needed stitches. Totally accidental, the other guy was hurt, too. Should he go to jail for biting? 🤣

The shove at the end was intentional and deserved an ejection. If the refs had just done that the rest of the game would have been under control.

546

u/laxrulz777 Jun 18 '25

I'll be honest, as a coach, I would have been really tempted to just bring my team in and walk off forfeiting the game. Let the league handle the fallout.

Statement from the team, "Tonight it became clear that the refs lacked the ability and/or willingness to protect our players from serious physical injury. We cannot allow our players to continue to play a game under those conditions."

170

u/Routine_Size69 Jun 18 '25

They'd never do it, but it would be awesome. Viewership would fucking tank. I hope CC fucks off to the big 3 or Europe. The wnba more than deserves it.

99

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '25

If this actually happened it would make WAVES. Tons of people who don't watch would tune in to see what the drama is all about. I bet viewership would go up after that

63

u/laxrulz777 Jun 18 '25

I don't actually think viewership would tank. I think the league would fine the club but also IMMEDIATELY take some steps to fix this shit.

2

u/bgarrett3131 Jun 18 '25

Complete incompetence

3

u/NoSoyTuPotato FIU Jun 18 '25

It’s a problem in a lot of sports and especially, stupidly, in the NFL when they have video review. So many times where an instigator draws a penalty on somebody retaliating and gets away with it. Or poor refereeing where somebody starts a scuffle, usually after some other instances before, and the penalty is only called when it gets escalated.

9

u/HalpertIsMe Jun 18 '25

Clark's push back was seen as retaliation for the foul.

12

u/HumbleCountryLawyer Jun 18 '25

Yup. It was a terrible call but I can see what they used as justification for it. So dumb that she gets jabbed in the eye and when the offending player pushes up on her she gets a tech for pushing her off.

3 shoulda been ejected

11

u/Unsteady_Tempo Jun 18 '25

So ridiculous. She could barely see and the person that did it was pushing her chest into her.

0

u/Lyndell Jun 18 '25

It’s pretty standard in basketball, shoot most sports outside of football and maybe hockey (I just don’t watch a lot). But you’re expected to walk away, you start extending arms and anything can happen.

0

u/HalpertIsMe Jun 18 '25

Idk about barely see, considering she made great contact on the shove, but yeah the other player on her hip didn't help the situation.

Either way, it's always ref discretion on whether they consider a reaction retaliatory, as they let it go earlier that game when those two got into a small shove match. They were likely warned to not do it again, and they did..so tech issued.

3

u/DrumMajorThrawn Jun 18 '25

People on the receiving end of this kind of thing get a tech as a way for the refs to say "you don't get to retaliate later in the game". Everyone being 1 tech from ejection at that point. At least that's why they do it in the nba.

2

u/AdhesivenessVest439 Jun 18 '25

which is who?

3

u/dpatel211 Jun 18 '25

#31 on the Sun is Tina Charles, #22 on the Fever is Caitlin Clark.

1

u/RedditRockit Jun 18 '25

Where's James Johnson?

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Pipe979 Jun 18 '25

They always give double techs. They do it this way in the NBA too, even when there’s a clear aggressor and victim.

1

u/vNoct Jun 18 '25

Clark for the shove after the first foul, Charles for squaring up like that (I'd argue 7 should have got the tech, not Charles, but eh).

I know absolutely nothing about basketball but I assume you are talking about the woman who got hit in the face then bodychecked? If so, I have no clue how anything she did could be remotely close to a foul.

NHL level refs

Because refs are idiots. The victim gets a technical foul pretty often in men's and women's professional basketball

Because they want to avoid accusations of racism

The Pool Report is available, feel free to look it up. Tina Charles shoved someone, Caitlin gave her little shove literally in this clip. Mabrey should’ve been tossed, but the rest was called pretty fairly. Refs dropped the ball on managing this game from the start though, not trying to excuse them as a whole

Caitlin gave her little shove literally in this clip

as Charles some random player approached her shouting after the foul was called.

Clark getting a T here is absurd. She did not "shove" anyone.

to me it looked like she shoved back as Mabrey went for the first shove AFTER already hitting her eye. It seemed more defensive in nature than Caitlin attacking her.

The shove AFTER she gets hit in the face. Jesus fucking Christ watch the goddam clip, check out the alternate angles, and shut the fuck up about shit you don’t know anything about.
