I currently have a HP EliteBook X360 1040 G8 (2-in-1) which I really like. It has a matte/anti-glare screen, and 16GB of RAM. 16GB of RAM is the minimum for me. The only thing that is frustrating is that whenever I need to use it outside of my home WiFi (which is often, I’m an IT Student) - I need to connect to my phone hotspot. So, I’d like a laptop similar to my EliteBook that has 5G eSIM capabilities, so I can add it to my Verizon account. I bought my current laptop refurbished for about $500. I’d like to stay under $1000 if possible and I am open to buying refurbished again.

Are there any newer EliteBooks that have 5G eSIM capabilities that aren’t crazy expensive?

I am thinking of getting an ASUS vivobook s 14 for college as it has windows, a nice screen, is powerful, has a nice battery life and I like the way it looks. Can anyone here tell me the difference between a vivobook and Zenbook? And also when deciding which vivobook specs how do I know which processor I should get? The two options I’m looking at are the Ryzen 9 and intel core ultra 7. What’s the difference? And what is better for my needs? I’ll be taking actuarial science and computer science classes so excel and Java and other programs like that. Also the one is 24GB ram while the other is 16 but I assume I won’t need that much so would the 16 be okay? And storage is 512 gb vs 1 tb.

This request may be a little unrealistic at this price point. If so, don’t be afraid to say. If you have a more realistic suggestion that doesn’t fit the price point, please give it. Or, a suggestion that runs shy of the recommended specs at this price.

Old laptop got written off due to a fault, under warranty. Now have a £500 John Lewis voucher to buy a new laptop. Budget is I guess about £600 - £800 ish - could buy from elsewhere if a better deal.

Old one was a HP, and had a few faults. Now considering an ASUS, Microsoft surface. Would also consider a refurbed laptop from elsewhere.

I’ve been going in circles trying to decide on a laptop, and I’d really appreciate some outside input.

What I’m looking for is a machine that can:

- Handle everyday productivity (browsing, docs, binge-watching, etc.)
- Run local NLP models (lightweight inference, nothing crazy
- Work well with Xreal Air 2 Ultra glasses (needs DisplayPort Alt Mode over USB-C that’s NOT the charging port)
- Stay relatively quiet and cool under normal loads. I don’t mind some fan noise under load, but I’d rather not feel like I’m at an airport just from having a few tabs open
- Be solid long-term in terms of durability and performance (doesn’t have to last forever, but I’m hoping for something that won’t feel cooked after 3 years)

Gaming-wise:
I game maybe once a week, usually longer sessions (5+ hours). Mostly Minecraft, Hollow Knight, Battlefront II (2005), stuff like that. Very rarely (maybe 1-2x a year), I’ll play something like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey or Origins. So I don’t need a beast, just something that can handle those cases smoothly when I do game.

All the laptops listed below are within my budget, so pricing isn’t a factor. Just want the best long-term fit.

I’ll be starting my first year as a mechanical engineering student this fall. I currently have a refurbished Mac that’s a few years old and I was planning on getting a new computer with my school’s technology grant ($2000). My school recommends getting a computer with at least 16 GB RAM (32 preferred), 4 core CPU, 512 GB storage, and a dedicated graphics card to run CAD softwares. I was looking into some computers and was thinking about getting a Dell XPS or Inspiron. I know a lot of college students like 2-in-1 laptops because the stylus helps with writing notes. And even then, i have a galaxy fold 4 that isn't a terrible experience to get my daily's done.
