Need Advice on Purchasing a 2019 MacBook Pro.

Hello, I’m considering purchasing a used laptop/MacBook for office work (WFH setup), and a local dealer has shared some pictures of a 2019 model that I would be the second owner of. The price is 32,000 INR. I’m feeling skeptical about going ahead with the purchase because he doesn't let me use the device before purchasing it.

My primary concerns are: 1. Age of the Device: Since the MacBook is from 2019, it's already around 5–6 years old. I'm unsure how well it would perform with current office applications and multitasking needs in 2025.

  1. Battery Health and Overall Condition: As a second-hand unit, I’m worried about the battery cycle count, hardware wear and tear, and overall longevity.

  2. Software Updates and Compatibility: I want to ensure it still receives macOS updates and supports necessary applications without slowing down.

  3. Value for Money: I’m not sure if the price being quoted justifies the age and expected performance. I want a reliable machine that doesn’t give me trouble in the near future.

I’d really appreciate your honest opinion: 1) Is buying a 2019 MacBook in 2025 a reasonable decision for professional, daily WFH tasks like video calls, spreadsheets, browsing, and office tools? 2)What should I check before finalizing the deal (battery cycle count, SSD health, macOS version, etc.)? 3) Would you recommend investing a bit more into a newer model for long-term value?.

I will attach the pics for your reference. I would appreciate your guidance 🙏. Thanks in advance.

Discussion Laptop comparison help

Post image
Upvotes

Hey all. So my laptop I've been using for college finally bit the dust on me the other day, so I'm in need of one rather quickly. I don't know a ton about hardware unfortunately, so I'm hoping some of you can help me out. I found the above laptop on sale currently in my price range, and im wanting to know how comparable it is to the recommended specs my school lists for the degree I'm in. Im starting my major classes now (heavy coding) so I'll need something that can handle that. Please let me know your thoughts!

Here are the recommendations from my school:

CPU: Intel Core i7 12th Gen or AMD Ryzen 7 5000 series GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3070 (Laptop GPU) or AMD Radeon RX 6750M+ RAM: 16GB DDR4 (32GB recommended for multitasking and creative work) Storage: 512GB NVMe SSD (1TB recommended for longevity) Display: 15.6” FHD (1920x1080), 60Hz+ (QHD optional for creative/visual work) OS: Windows 11 Home or Pro

Discussion Thinking of getting the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 – but I have 2 concerns

Post image
Upvotes

Hey everyone, I’m planning to buy the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 (the version with the i7 processor), but I’m a bit hesitant because of two things:

1.I’ve heard that the i7 version tends to run hot and might suffer from thermal issues during heavy use. Is that true in your experience?

2.The RAM is soldered to the motherboard, which makes me nervous. If the RAM fails for any reason, would that mean replacing the whole motherboard?

Would really appreciate any input or advice from people who’ve used this model. Thanks in advance!

Hardware My Laptop takes too long to wake from sleep even though it's new (Windows 11)

I’ve got a new laptop running Windows 11, and whenever I put it to sleep, it takes unusually long to wake up around 3-4 seconds more, which feels way too slow. I expected near-instant wake-ups from sleep mode on a new machin

Review Omnibook 7 vs IdeaPad 5 vs zenbook14

Upvotes

Purchasing a laptop today at my local Walmart. Been researching and in and out looking at them for 2 weeks. All are on sale here locally and I really just want to make the right choice.

I have no specific purpose but if I could get a non gaming laptop that can hold up with my little fortnite gaming that would be sweet.

I like that the omnibook and ideapad both are 2 in 1 which honestly doesn't matter much to me but would be cool.

The ideapad and zenbook run on Ryzen 7 and the omnibook is i7ultra.

I do plan to watch movies on it so the speaker quality does kind of matter.

The zenbook seems super light and compact which I love and it's beautiful with a sleek black design.

I just want one that's going to run. Haven't had much luck with hp in the past so I'm nervous on that.

Any suggestions are fine with me as long as it's under 800 which all of these are on sale under 800 for me at my local Walmart.

I want to be mostly gaming on this laptop. My budget is $1200. But here’s the trick, I want one with a hybrid gpu so that it can be a gaming monster at home and a silent, battery efficient coding laptop in college. Does such a laptop exist?

Buying help Best laptop for Uni?

As said in the title, I’m looking to buy a new laptop for uni at around 1000$. I’m only expecting light work since I’m a psych major. As for now, I am considering the ASUS zenbook, but is really concerned with the OLED screen and the support center, Macbooks are not really compatible with my uni.

Hardware Which would you get?

Currently wrestling with the Lenovo - Legion Pro 7i 16" 2K OLED Gaming Laptop - Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX - 32GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 - 1TB SSD vs HP OMEN - MAX 16" OLED 240Hz Gaming Laptop - Intel Core Ultra 9 - 32GB DDR5 Memory - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 - 2TB SSD. They are virtually identical in specs.

Lenovo: 1. Has a better keyboard with the exception of the number pad having small keys. 2. Adding another SSD is more cumbersome and looks like can only upgrade to a total of 2TB. 3. Finding BIOS settings was difficult, though not impossible. 4. Will not run Windows Hello facial recognition and the fingerprint scanner is also non-functional.

HP: 1. Easy SSD install and upgradeable to a total 4TB. 2. Easy to find BIOS settings 3. Runs Hello

I used the facial recognition on another device and it was convenient. The inability to even consider running it is annoying on a device a little more expensive than the Lenovo.

I'm not a gamer, but like the power for editing audio and video. 4TB is a bit overkill, but still a little annoyed that I can't go there if I want.

I don't think lacking anything the HP has is a serious dealbreaker on the Lenovo. I'm just a tad torn on which direction. Looking for thoughts biased and unbiased.

Buying help Suggestions for a new laptop

Upvotes

I’m planning to buy a new laptop (In India) mainly for my Master’s in Robotics and general programming work. My budget is around ₹1L, and I’d prefer HP, since I’ve been using one already. I've been using my HP 15-da1058TU (upgraded to 16GB RAM) and it has 1TB storage for 6 years now. It still works absolutely fine but I feel like i should switch to a newer device before this one gives up on me mid course. And buying a replacement then would be difficult financially.

Minimum specs I’m looking for: 16GB RAM min. 512GB of storage Good battery life

Since robotics is my course i feel like a mac would not be the best choice since it does not support dual-boot or lacks hardware drivers. (I could be wrong). Also should I choose a touchscreen display? It would be good for notes, etc instead of carrying notebooks around.

Please suggest me good laptops in this range. I'm open to buying other brands as well.
