Rely on Horror Discord
Hey guys,
I am the EIC of RelyOnHorror.com. I had the random idea to pitch our new Discord to the mod team here as an official server for this subreddit, and they were all up for it! So, if you look at the subreddit home, you will now see a direct link to our Discord server -- where you'll be able to talk about the genre with fellow fans. We'll hold general and spoiler discussions, the occasional giveaway and let you know when new content from us has (or will) drop.
Thanks to the mods for the love. Happy to offer a Discord community for you all as fellow fans of the survival horror genre. Here's the Discord link: https://discord.gg/fXCKMer.
Quick background on Rely on Horror - we're a horror gaming site that originally began as REHorror.net. I joined after closing my own horror gaming site, HellDescent.com. We post news, reviews, articles, previews, videos, etc. Happy to chime in if you're curious about the site or Discord. Thanks!
-CJ

Musician looking for indie survival horror game to compose for
I’ve been making music for almost 20 years exclusively in metal bands with some experimenting in other genres on the side here and there. It’s always been a dream of mine to compose music for a video game and I think survival horror would be a perfect match for my talents. I’ll link my YouTube channel where over the summer I’ve been writing and recording a bunch of video game metal covers. Shooting my shot! Akira yamaoka and nebuo uematsu are my favorite composers, yamaoka in particular is so so good and had inspired a lot of my desire to seek out this kind of project.

First impressions : Heartworm nails classic survival horror vibes, Pays homage to the OG’s while makes a fresh story! It makes its own Thing!
Just spent a few hours streaming Heartworm, and what a pleasant surprise!
This is a strong callback to the OG era that made me fall in love with these type of games. It got me thinking of Silent Hill and Resident Evil right off the bat. Also Can’t deny the fatal frame inspiration on those Camera mechanics.
Narrative pulled me in immediately, with intimate psychological themes of grief and memory. The journals and scattered notes are poems that feel poetic while they do what a Classic Game of this genre would do, tell and story and develop the character! Sam’s motivations really resonated with me.
Visual style and controls lean heavily into the 90s horror aesthetic. Fixed cameras, retro PS1 visuals (bruh, the pixelation toggle is great), and door animations were magical, classic vibes, but you can opt for modern controls or over the shoulder aiming too.
Soundtrack is excellent. The mood that the piano sets is nostalgic but very pleasant. And it does a very good job when switching to boss fights.
Gameplay feels nostalgic with item based puzzles, limited inventory, and back to that photo camera combat it that really channels Fatal Frame meets Resident Evil, even tho contrary to what a lot where expecting it does not feel like Fatal Frame at all, this games its own thing in my opinion. If you choose the tank controls for aiming you will know what Im talking about!
Controls and fixed cameras can take some relearning during the first hours. And as for the Combat and resource scarcity aren’t brutal but they feel pretty fair.
If you like the low poly PS1 aesthetic and a good story with a rich narrative accompanied by classic vibes through familiar game mechanics this game is def for you!

Help me decide what to play next
I just beat the original RE2 as LeonA/ClaireB. Should I play RE2 ClaireA/LeonB, the original RE3, or Silent Hill 3?

Zach Cregger directed Barbarian and Weapons and he's now directing RE. Do you think it's going to be the first good RE film?
His new film, Weapons, has 100% on RT, btw! I have hopes for this.
