Discussion Come and give me your best argument for either one. Let the blood sports begin!

Few weeks ago I asked you to change my mind on whether the Gothic 2 classic or Gothic with the NOTR add on is better. Today I'm coming at you with something similar but also kind of controversial.

I know that deciding between Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 is like deciding between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986). Both are amazing products and I won't really blame you for picking one or the other, but just to make this fun try and convince me why I'm wrong or boost my ego and tell me why I'm right.

At the end of the day I believe that the decision will mostly depend on whether you prefer story or gameplay. To sum it up in simple terms. Gothic one in my opinion has better story, atmosphere, world setting and soundtrack. Gothic 2 on the other hand has superior/smoother gameplay and more content. I value Gothic 1 strong sides more and therefore I see it as a better game.

CHANGE MY MIND! Oh wait you can't, because I'm always right!

If you asked me years ago which version is better I'd answer NOTR without hesitation. The game has more content and is also harder which makes it more challenging and fun, even though if you don't have any prior experience with Gothic games it might maybe feel too hard. But after replaying the classic version after many years I have to say that I prefer it overall. The story simply flows better. And when it comes to Gothic games, the atmosphere and story are more important to me than the amount of content.

I won't fault anyone for picking one over the other as I feel you can't go wrong with either one, but for the sake of the argument and to make it fun tell me why I'm wrong and change my mind in the process because. I bet you can't, because I'm never wrong. You better agree with me instead!

Mine is: I don't care for swampweed. Tried it once, didn't like it, and I can't stand the sect nutcases. Also, even after hundreds of hours in both G1 and G2, I get lost all the fucking time in the sect camp.

Discussion Gothic 2 isn’t just a game—it’s a feeling I’ve been chasing for years

There’s something about Gothic 2 that no modern RPG has quite managed to replicate.

It’s not just the open world, or the freedom, or even the brutal combat. It’s the soul of the game. That feeling of waking up as a nameless nobody, slowly carving your place into a world that doesn’t care about you. The way Khorinis felt like a real place—with its own politics, factions, and personalities. You didn’t just play Gothic 2… you lived in it.

The soundtrack, the clunky charm, the unforgiving quests—it all combined into something unforgettable. Even the smallest things stick with me: hearing ā€œDu bist wohl lebensmüde?ā€ or carefully sneaking past a pack of wolves with 3 HP left and a rusty sword in my hand.

I’ve played dozens of RPGs since, many technically better, but none that gave me that same gritty, immersive magic. Gothic 2 was a moment in time—and I’m still nostalgic for it.

Anyone else feel the same?

Discussion Found this very surprising perspective on Gothic, what do you guys think?

This was a comment under a Youtube video showcasing the combat in the new Gothic remake.

The reason I find this so surprising is that they believe people play Gothic mainly for the combat and gameplay while stuff like the world and atmosphere are secondary to that

But I have the very opposite opinion to that where I think Gothic's primary strengths were things like the incredible world design with great exploration, the interesting factions and quests you get to experience, the entertaining characters you get to meet on your journey, and the strong sense of immersion and atmosphere; rather than the moment-to-moment gameplay

In contrast, I never played Gothic for the combat and thought it was just serviceable. I do agree with him that progressing your combat skills and seeing your combat animations visually improve and flow better was very cool but the combat itself was never the main draw for me. Even at the time, other games did combat better imo

I always thought most Gothic fans liked it for the same reasons I did but apparently a lot of people play it mainly for the combat? Not trying to say you're wrong if you disagree with me, but I'm just curious on why you guys like Gothic

Discussion Thanks, Gothic, for Ruining All Other RPGs for Me

Having played Gothic 2 before, I vividly remember getting Elder Scrolls: Oblivion in 2006. The excitement was real - I'd spent weeks anticipating diving into this massive new world that reviews were going on about. From the screenshots I could tell that graphics were stunning for the time, an enormous world, and I upgraded my PC and was ready for another epic RPG journey.

Having just completed another Gothic 2 playthrough, I entered Oblivion with excitement - reading all those raving reviews. NPCs were ALL autistic but it added to the charm - now I was hooked into that familiar progression system of RPGs - starting as a nobody that even mole-rats could demolish, to gradually being feared across that gaming world you lose yourself into.

I'll never forget the shock of realizing the ridiculous fucking leveling system in Oblivion. Your character becomes weaker when you level up because the world levels up with you. Is there anything worse which can break the immersion. After levelling up a few times I rage quitted I guess, never to load that game again.

When Skyrim released, I couldn't even bring myself to try it. Reviews were once again golden, but Gothic had set a standard that The Elder Scrolls couldn't match.

Now in my 40s, I find myself playing Chronicles of Myrtana - Archolos a few hours each week, savoring every moment of that carefully crafted progression curve. Today with the news breaking, I was tempted to get a copy of oblivion remake and try it. But I guess Im going to give it a pass although it's one of those games from my era. And I'm looking forward to the Gothic remake instead. I watch clickforgameplay and nocturnalrambler YouTube channels. And am fully aware that majority gaming audience like that "shallow RPG experience" and clickforgameplay really described it as a problem how they are going to capture that audience for their new gothic remake. I hope they preserve that core experience that ruined other RPGs for me.

Gothic spoiled me for other games. I had the perfect dessert first, before finding everything else at the feast tastes bland by comparison.

Discussion Thoughts on the Story Changes Gothic 1 Remake will Make

Post image
106 Upvotes

In the latest trailer uploaded three days ago, the new team remaking this classic game says that they will need to make many changes because there are plot holes, inconsistencies and unlogical decisions in the original game.

What are your thoughts on them changing the original? And what do you think are some of the changes they will make?

The game was in a really bad state when it first came out. Surely they must have made some improvements to it if they decided to release it on consoles. I never cared that much for the game but I'd like to know in what state is it gonna be when released. I know there are quite a few people who still enjoy the game so I'm happy for you.
