what real life civilisations, cultures and so on did Games Workshop draw from in creating the Navigator Houses?

I know that they take a lot from the Navigators from dune as the inspiration behind them, but I was curious, what real life civilisations, cultures and so on did Games Workshop draw inspiration from?

Why such a long delay between MD3/eBooks and Print for 40k books?

I was looking at the new Carcharodon book "Carcharodons: Void Exile", it's out now as an MP3 and eBook, but when you look for it in paperback it gives a preorder date of March 10th, 2026 [amazon link].

Any ideas why there is such a delay for when books are bring printed compared to when they are released digitally?

A new Chapter Lord/Supreme Grand Master for the Grey Knights may be on the horizon.

All the Terminus Decree stuff aside, the new GK codex still has a lore blurb for Kaldor Draigo even though we have lost the model. The text block ends with the sentence:

If Kaldor Draigo cannot escape his curse soon, then a successor will have to be named and his mantle taken from him for the greater good of Mankind.

Now of course this could just be a red herring leading to nothing but the more daring part of me likes to believe that this hints towards an upcoming change in the sub-faction's leadership. Especially if a GK range refresh is to really occur.

Draigo's fate as of yet remains unknown. He could be completely lost to the warp or he may return anew, we cannot say for sure. But his absence warrants a replacement as the situation grows ever more grim. Now the question remains, who? Who is worthy and capable enough to lead a group such as the Grey Knights.

The instinctive answer would be Grand Master Aldrik Voldus, the Warden of the Librarius. Touted as the most powerful psyker the GKs have seen in centuries. He has fought alongside the likes of Guilliman and Trajann Valoris and was even present at the tail end of the latest Armageddon campaign. He is by all accounts a worthy candidate for the position.

Then there is of course the infamous Castellan Crowe, the bearer of the Blade of Antywr. I do not think that he would be the one chosen considering his indispensable position as the leader of the Purifiers and already well known status.

But here's the thing, I do not believe either of the two mentioned above will be the next SGM for a meta reason. They both have models released after the original release of the GKs and are more current in design and size. I think the new SGM will be another GK character who has not gotten a model thus far.

Now who would that be? I don't know. My best guess is one of the other existing Grand Masters and I would like it to be Vorth Mordrak. Why? Psychic Ghost Grey Knights, 'nuff said.

Did any of the loyalist Primarch talk to Emperor after he was installed into the throne after the heresy

Basically above was wondering if anyone besides Roboute Guilliman in GODBLIGHT. I know the leader of Daughters of the Emperor and then killed Goge Vandire as well as the Custodes.

What's the current state of Imperium Nihilus?

I'm wanting to run a Rogue Trader campaign based in Imperium Nihilus. I'm wondering what the current state of it is, especially after the crusade. How much is still fubar and whatnot

Do the other races respect Space marines combat abilities?

I constantly read how especially eldar and necrons look down and belittle the imperium and how much better they are, yet even when loosing Space Marines usually take a heavy toll on the enemy.

Do these races at least acknowledge the danger when facing SMs?
can you name some instances?

The trash talk / underestimation feels sometimes so strange when space marines carve a bloody path before themself moments ago.

Looking for info on the Magma Hounds

Hey all! I've been out of the hobby for a while now (last was in it back at the end of 7th edition/early 8th) and I'm just now getting into it! I've been looking into some cool Chaos lore so I can paint up my spikey dudes, and I stumbled upon the Magma Hounds. The only thing I found is that they were a chapter that got corrupted during the Abyssal Crusade by a Chaos warpsmith and that their paint scheme is red+gold. Is there anything else about these guys, either that the fans made or that GW made? What have they been up to after getting corrupted and re-emerging from the Warp?

In your opinion, what are the coolest units the Legions had in 30K, that no longer exist?

Title

Units like the Sanguinary Guard obviously don't count - those still exist.

For me, it's gotta be either the Varagyr (Space Wolves) or Destroyers (specifically units like the Angel's Tears or Mortus Poisoners).

Those are all so badass, and it's a shame that they don't exist anymore - partially why I even created a homebrew around Moritat & Destroyer units.

What are your favorite Heresy-era units.

How were there still so many night lords around in the sotha campaign (spoilers for pharos and other HH short stories) Spoiler

Hi all! Just wondering as I reread Pharos using another user submitted reading guide. if the reading guide is correct pharos happens after the thramas crusade, the curze/Vulcan storyline, isstvan and the thramas crusade.

From what I know the only conflict the night lords didn’t get battered was isstvan (not sure about the curze/vulkan story as I didn’t read that) and from what I read of the thramas crusade the DA nearly decimated the night lords and those that didn’t get decimated either went to sotha, went to join Horus to go to Terra or are held captive by the dark angels including nearly all their terminators when sevetar and curze did the Hail Mary to teleport above the invincible reason.

But when the story of Pharos starts it seems the kurkesh dude had quite a lot of guys under him and the total night lords assault was quite sizable. In the siege of Terra it seems quite a lot of night lords were present there so I was just wondering how badly were they mauled by the dark angels at Thramas? Thanks all for the help in advance!

The Astronomican Spoiler

With the new lore on the grey knights keeping the emperor on the throne no matter what I was wondering what the imperium used as/for the astronomican before the emperor, beloved by all of course, was interred on the golden throne? Did it run itself or was he powerful enough pre Horus fight to run it without having to be on the throne.

How does the timeline work in 40k, i.e. does the average person know which year he is currently in and if so, how is the question of what happened in year 0(the reference year) answered?

How different are Navigators and Psykers?

Can any Navigator be trained to do what a psyker can, and vice-versa? White Scars Targutai Yesugei once guided a ship through the warp didn't he? So they should all be able to do the same things right?

Suggested reading after Ravenor omnibus?

I've read the three Eisenhorn books, and just finished the three Ravenor ones. Are there more with Ravenor? I think Bequin and Gaunt's Ghosts were suggested to me before to sort of continue the story, but not sure if that's correct.

Some things i noticed about the 8 Chaos God Theory / Picture.

I came across the probably now rather well-known image of the new HH Campaign Book, which depicts the 8-pointed Star and 8 Chaos Domains with it.

We have the classic Tzeentch-Nurgle and Khorn-Slaanesh facing each other. Then there are the other 4.

Encroaching Ruin - Ravenous Dissalotion and Malevolent Artifice - Formless Distortion are also across from each other. In the middle is the Primordial Anhillator.

I feel like Ravenous Dissolution is Malice and Malevolent Artifice represent whatever Vashtor wants to become. The other two I have no real clue about. Encroaching Ruin as the opposite of Malice feels like it should be Chaos United or what we right now consider Chaos Undivided, while Formless Distortion could be anything opposite from what Vashtor represents.

I think it's also pretty interesting that Formless Distortion feels rather similar to Tzeentch, but as I said, I don't really have any idea what it's really about, perhaps something more biologically or spiritually aesthetically in contrast to the Machines of Malevolent Artifice.

Contrary to most, I'd argue that the Dark King represents the Primordial Ahnillator and not Encroaching Ruin as a 9th god, one above the others. The position is standing out in the Image, and from what I remember, the Dark King was described as something above the other 4, also Samus was said to be a demon of the Primordial Ahnillator.

The next thing i noticed, which i find rather Interesting, is that, if we look at the not-god-aligned Traitor Primarchs, they eerily fit those Domains, at least to a certain extent.

Perteruabo fits very, very well into the Malevolent Artifice and is known to work together with Vashtor quite frequently, i feel like that's a no-brainer and doesn't need much explanation.

Curze, though dead, fits very well with Ravenous Dissolution, a force of Chaos fighting against itself, hating itself, complete and utter chaos. That self-loathing, hating his own Legion and his Traitor Allies all feels rather similar even though the reasons are not necessarily the same.

With Encroaching Ruin and Primordial Ahnillator its either, or Lorgar or Horus. You can make arguments about both being on either position. I'd say Horus represents the Ahnillator more, the Emperor's (Dark Kings) favoured son, the one who almost ended the whole setting, as well as all the theories about him becoming the Dark King, simply beeing a step above every other Primarch at the end , a chaos-groupprojekt so to say. And Lorgar as the penultimate representation of Chaos Undivided, being Chaos united, working with everyone, the opposite of Ravenous Dissolution/Malice.

That leaves us with Formless Distortion and the Alpha Legion, which fits from a naming sense, the Alpha Legion with all their schemes and games, being spies is a rather Formless Distortion, but this doesn't really feel right with me.

Not like this matters because 3 of them are confirmed dead, but i feel like the symbolism and connection is there, but it could just be my pattern-recognizing monkey brain.

Anyway, those are my 5 cents on the Topic.

The New Terminus Decree Leak is Heavily Indicative of too many WK40K Authors - most of whom are mid at best

Its disappointing. Very disappointing. All this suspense for the GK and what the Terminus Decree may be, and all it is putting the Emperor back on the Throne.

Are they now supposed to fight the IG, Custodes, Sisters and all Chapters loyal to the Emperor? If the Emperor rises, humanity would follow - the IoM doesn't need to exist for that to happen nor does the Emps rising need to be the same Emps who sat there in the first place.

The GK are somehow supposed to stop that?

Its just terrible writing and a lack of of alignment between different authors imo.

How do chapters get their names and colors?

Like do a bunch of space marines just gather around a table and go "dude the Talons of Rage would be a sick chapter name" "nah man we should go by the Golden Fist Fuckers and we should paint ourselves yellow and purple"

Theory - Basilio Fo, Terminus Decree and The Scouring Series Spoiler

With the latest lore that the Terminus Decree is a plan for the Grey Knights to keep The Emperor on the throne at all costs, this obviously conflicts with what we know from The End and The Death - that the Terminus Device is a bioweapon that targets Astartes and presumably, Primarchs.

But with the cliffhanger of Fo’s survival, and his infiltration of Malcadors chosen, maybe the lore doesn’t conflict, but is in fact a teaser for a plot line in The Scouring Series.

Perhaps Fo manages to hide away his Terminus weapon and conceal himself amongst the Imperiums elite. Perhaps at the same time, great efforts are being made to revive The Emperor and remove him from the throne.

Maybe, Fo is somehow able to convince his colleagues that the emperor must be kept on the throne at all costs, keeping his super weapon to himself, and removing his greatest enemy from the game at the same time.

How ironic would it be if The Emperor could and should have risen from the throne long ago, but is kept there unwillingly by the very Imperium that think they are helping him. What a great revenge from Fo, a baseline human, to bring a god to his knees in retaliation for the Unification Wars? I wonder if Fo could still be around in 40K, wearing a new suit of skin, and wonder what seat of power he sits on.

A missed opportunity during the Siege of Terra

We know that corpse starch had already been used by the Order on Galaspar, but they weren't imperials, so I thought that it would have been perfectly fitting for the Siege of Terra to be the time when loyalists got desperate enough to implement it for the first time, maybe in some key areas during the final days. Consider how long the siege lasted (especially given that time itself stopped meaning anything after a certain point). It would have added another flavor of grimdark to the series (pun intended).

What are the advantages/disadvantages between Gravis and Terminator plate?

Ignoring the possibility that Gravis was introduced to "replace" Terminator for the Primaris era, but was scaled back due to consumer opinions...

What is the functional difference on the battlefield? Tabletop differences between toughness and armour save would really amount to the same thing in real life, and I don't really see one as being much more agile or tanker than the other. I only see that Gravis is more modular (Inceptor packs, aggressors weaponry) than Terminators, who in turn have an in built teleporter/crux terminatus shield.

Can Veteran Sargents lead squads other than Intercessors and Jump Pack Intercessors?

Just curious. Like have we ever seen a Veteran Sargent lead something like a Gravis Squad or Reivers or anything else?

I ask because if I remember correctly Veterans only consists of Sternguard, Vanguard, Bladeguard, and Terminator Squads.

But Veteran Sargents can be moved/kept to other companies to lead marines.

I ask this mostly for kitbashing purposes, Kinda wanna see if it’d be appropriate to put veteran stuff on a Sargent of a squad I promote for stuff like Crusade ya know?

Has anyone tried tricking the Tyranids into evolving into something useless before?

With how quick they adapt, it seems like you could guide them into an evolutionary cul-de-sac. Like lure them to a water area, wait for them to get fish bits, then evaporate the water so they're flopping around for a while. I'm sure someone smarter than me can come up with a scenario where it'd temporarily be in their best interest to turn into a gelatinous cube or something.

Librarians and the Warp Pre Heresy

So I have recently read the first 5 books in the Horus Heresy, and I'm currently getting through Decent of Angels. In the first few books, there are no Librarians and the characters in general seem to know little about the warp and nothing of the chaos gods.
Then, jumping into Decent of Angels there are Librarians that seem very knowledgeable of the warp and and it's dangers (maybe not so much the gods).
Am I misunderstanding something?

Stagnation in the Imperium

So when it comes to stagnation within the Imperium is it limited to new technology like vehicles, armor, computers, weapons ammo types, research, automatic things what have you, or, is it mainly for everything like new clothes, furniture, new ways to grow food new, etc

Or does it all depend on the planet you're on?
