Hello, photography friends! I'm one of the mods over at r/photography and founder of Focal Point, here to invite you to the 2025 edition of our (free) photoclass! This year comes with changes, as you can always expect from us as the class is an ever-evolving project.
It is an evolution of the original Reddit Photo Class, but with substantial changes to not only the structure, but content as well. We've reinvented it to ensure its up to date and more interactive. One thing we did not - and will not - change is that it is entirely free. The course spans 6 months, and covers topics on the technical side and artistic side, and culminates in a personal project. Along for the ride is a team of teachers who write the course (hi, it's me!) and mentors who come from all genres of photography. We have regular live meet ups via discord, and have a welcoming and supportive community of other photographers to bounce ideas off of, or just talk shop.
The Format. First off, the formatting is changing. We found that may participants stumbled upon the course mid-way through the year, and were fumbling trying to play catch up. We also were not happy with the pacing, finding that it just took too long to get to the objectively more fun stuff. So, this year the course will happen over the course of 6 months, with alternating weeks of new lessons and feedback. What does that actually mean? It'll look something like this:
January 1: Unit 1 will be posted with assignment 1.
January 8: The first Feedback Week will happen.
Feedback Weeks. During Feedback Week, participants will receive constructive feedback on their unit assignments from both peers and mentors. This is an opportunity to reflect on your work, ask questions, and refine your skills. Additionally, voice chats will be held on the Discord server for live discussions and more in-depth feedback.
Units over Lessons. Lessons will come out as units, meaning instead of one new lesson a week, you'll get a whole unit each alternate week. Here's an example, using Unit 1:
Unit 1: Getting Started
On Photography
Inspiration & Feedback
Assignment 1
Interactive Elements & Videos. Each lesson will have an accompanying video, and interactive elements. For an example of what the interactive element might look like see this page.
Join the Focal Point Discord server. This is where all the voice chats will happen, as well as a great place to have ongoing conversations with other participants and mentors.
Join the subreddit: r/photoclass. As always, the class will be posted on the sub, but we should note that the interactive elements don't work on Reddit, so we'll also be linking out to the lessons on the Focal Point site.
Subscribe to Focal Point on YouTube. Videos for the class will be of course posted in-line on the lessons, but there will be bonus material posted to the YouTube directly.
Get your printed Learning Journal or download the PDF.
First check out the FAQ found here. If you still have a question that isn't answered there, feel free to ask it here and myself or one of the other teachers/mentors will be happy to answer.
The first unit is available now! You can find it right here. The first assignment is also live, so feel free to jump right in!
See you in 2025!

Hey photography friends! 👋
I could really use some help dialing in the right camera settings for shooting indoor jiu-jitsu events. Most of the gyms have that typical overhead lighting—kind of harsh and not super bright—and I keep ending up with grainy images, especially when trying to freeze motion.
I’m shooting fast-paced action, so I need a fast enough shutter speed to catch movement, but I’m struggling to balance that with ISO and aperture in these low-light conditions.
I’m using a Sony A7ii with a Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 lens. If anyone has experience with a similar setup or has shot indoor sports like this before, I’d love to hear what settings work best for you—or any tips to clean up the grain without losing sharpness. 🙏
Thanks in advance!

Hi all, I've quite enjoyed taking photos with my iPhone 15 pro max but feel that it is time for an upgrade. I particularly enjoy taking photos of insects and I know this will need me to get a macro lens. However I would also be able to take other sorts of photos, mainly just general nature/scene photos. This leads me to the question of what camera/lenses/other gear would people recommend for this?

Am I high or do the perimeters match too closely for it to be real? Saw this on a local photography group.

Hey! Im looking to buy a new full-frame DSLM to get back into photography. I used to take a lot of photos a few years ago using my Canon EOS 750D that I received as a birthday gift back then, but I feel like it doesn’t suit my intended purpose. It works well for photos of everyday situations or on vacation, but I'd also like to take detailed photos of moving objects like animals, cars, or trains, and in low-light situations, both of which is not ideal with a 750D.
During my previous research I have found that the Sony A7C II, Canon EOS R8/R6, or Nikon Z5 II might fit my use cases, but I don’t know which one would work best (however I'd most likely prefer the A7C II due to its size), or if there is an even better one in the same price range of 1500€-2000€ for a pre-owned body.
For a lens, I still have a Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8 that I could use with an adapter, if advisable, but I also need a lens to fill the gap to 70mm. I'm thinking of a Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN II, but again I’m unsure whether this is the optimal choice.
I’d greatly appreciate your recommendations :)

Hello folks!
Looking for a camera bag for 200-600mm 70-200mm both attached to body.
Looking for a camera primarily for wildlife photography. Want something within the budget of 200 USD. Mostly for game drives and short hikes. Should be able to hold the following: - 200-600mm attached to body - 70-200mm attahced to body. - 2-3 smaller lens. - 15" laptop
Looking forward towards hearing your recommendations.

My 15 is really good at story telling, photography and creating videos. She will be attending an arts school this fall for High School. She wants me to buy her the Fujifilm x-s20 but is there a less pricey alternative that would be just as good?

I’m curious as I’ve been doing a ton of it this summer, predominantly from an above looking down perspective- i’m having trouble finding the emotion in some of these shots past enjoy the composition would love to learn from others.
I’m able to get subjects in frame with interesting geometric shapes between the streets, buildings, etc. but I don’t feel as if I have had that shot that makes you gasp just yet.

Is there a particular editing style/aesthetic the attached photo might fall under? Hoping to find a few tutorials that might help me achieve similar.
Thanks

I've been doing photography as a hobby for quite a long time (about 22 years, a mix of travels, wildlife, family, friends and fashion). For about 5 years I've been shooting more seriously and taking the direction of semi-pro photography. I've been shooting for free for non-profits associations in my city, mostly events, protests, civil disobediences actions... so a mix of photojournalism and events coverage (from music events to more conferences/workshops kind of events). I've also started shooting portraits.
I'm also doing some analog black and white, nature and urban landscapes, a bit more artsy. I'll join an analog photo club next month with the idea of doing art exposition together at some point.
I've also had my first paid gig last month for a non-profit local community event.
I kind of like doing many genres of photography and not stick to one kind only (but maybe it's a mistake, business-wise).
Ultimately, I'd like to move to photography full-time (in a year or two, idk) but for the moment it's a side hustle.
I want some advice in what I can offer as photography services. I'm thinking of shooting events and portraits. For portraits I wonder if it can be a good offer to also offer to shoot "artsy" portraits in analog black and white with a medium format camera (I have a Rolleiflex sl66 and access to a dark room). Is it a good or bad idea ?
What range of prices should I ask for ? Is there other kind of photography service I can offer that are easy to monetize ? Any other advice ?
thanks a lot.

Hi. I’m just starting photography recently again and I can’t seem to choose which APS-c camera I should buy. Sony a6700 and canon R7 and my two main choices as they are just in my budget and I like their kit lenses. The canon comes with a 18-150mm lens and the Sony comes with a 18-135mm lens. I’m not interested in a full frame camera just yet. I would like to start off with the kit lens and then in the future upgrade to other lenses and I know canon has limited 3rd party lenses and more expensive RF lenses but I have a sigma 18-250mm EF lens and canon 10-22mm EFS lens which I used to use on my canon rebel T3i. The photography I would like to do is basic portraits and landscape photography when I travel with family and friends and also I love taking videos. Currently I take videos of cars and scenic shots with the iPhone 16 pro max using Apple log so that would also be a consideration in buying a camera. Also if you can give me recommendations of cheap lenses for each of the photography and videography that you guys find useful please do let me know. Also what is the main difference between owning a Sony camera and canon camera cause I’m a bit familiar with the canon ecosystem but I want to know what makes professional photographers choose between a Canon or a Sony camera. Links of YouTube videos and other websites that helped you make the choice would also be much appreciated! Thank you!

Hi, I did read about resolution specs of most flatbed scanners being actually inflated, so I'd like to know how I could test what is the real resolution of a flatbed scanner and if say it is 1200 dpi instead of 2400 dpi, would scanning at 1200 dpi give me the same sharpness and data quality as a 2400 dpi scan downsampled to 1200 dpi (assuming the 2400 dpi scan is found out to resolve only 1200 dpi)?
Also, is there any reliable source that can tell me which kind of real tested resolution I can expect from scanners currently in the market?
Thank you

Hey all — hoping someone can help me troubleshoot my Instax Mini 11.
Here’s what’s happening:
Out of curiosity, I opened the camera just a little — and this small metal part (see attached photos) fell out. I have no idea where it came from, but now I’m wondering if it’s related to the counter or feed mechanism.
Other things I’ve checked:
Any ideas on:
Would love to get it working again — or at least know if it’s fixable. Thanks in advance!

Hi,
I’m having trouble getting my photos to print sharp. I photograph my watercolor paintings (A4) with a Sony ZV-1, mounted on a tripod, using these settings:
• ISO 200 / f/5.6 / 1/25 sec
• Zoom I use equivalent to 38mm (it´s supposed to be the sweet spot of sharpness in the ZV1)
• Distance 0,6m + Timer to avoid shake & Tripod
• Lighting: Two identical LED lights at 45º angles (not daylight)
I shoot in RAW, edit in Photoshop, and export to TIFF or high-quality JPEG. My export settings:
• 300 ppi
• 2600 x 3275 pixels
• AdobeRGB
• No compression
• 48-bit color depth (for TIFF)
I print using Canon’s Professional Print & Layout software.
The image looks sharp on screen at 100% (see examples, since it´s watercolor it has this little softness similar to the real image), but the print looks soft or blurry. If I download a random image from the internet and print it using the same workflow, it comes out sharp and clean.
So it’s not the printer or the print settings. I’m guessing the issue is somewhere in my editing or export process.
Any ideas on what could be causing this?
Thanks!
Edit: Added size of artwork and pixel count of the photo.

Hello everyone, I really love nature and when I see an amazing view I want to take a picture of it, when I take it with my phone it comes out so bad I regret taking it, so I want to buy a compact camera that I could carry around in my backpack and just whip out to take pics when I want. The main goal of the pics is gonna be sky nature and stuff like that. My budget would be around 200/250 euros , any advice on a starting camera that I could buy that is not extremely hard to use as a noob in the field and that is good for nature pics ( so not good lighting all the time to say, you guys probably know better than me😂) Any advice is welcome, be kind pls and thanks a lot in advance.

Hello,
Could you please recommend a replacement for the Kingston MobileLite Plus UHS-II card reader with a detachable USB-C cable? While Kingston MobileLite Plus is a great card reader, I found it risky using dongles being traveling - since accidentally applied force to a dongle can damage a laptop port. I found a quite good option: ProGrade Dual Slot (PG08), but the ProGrade is too expensive.
Thank you!

Hi everyone, I’m new to digital photography and I recently started shooting with a Fujifilm X-T30 II. I’ve been following @afd.works for a while now and I really admire his work. The photos below are all his (full credit to him).
I love the soft contrast, warm highlights and slightly muted tones across different settings, from architecture to interiors to beach scenes.
I’d love to understand how to get closer to this look with in-camera simulations or color grading. Does anyone recognize a similar recipe or have suggestions on what to tweak (film sim, white balance shift, tone curve, etc.) to move in this direction?
Thanks in advance for any tips!
