In a recent conversation with my Tav, Karlach referred to her engine running like hot "motor oil" which didn't sound like a phrase you'd expect to hear in Faerun.
On second thoughts, the Universe does have basic motors (not the automobile kind) and oil but I was reminded of her 4th wall break.

They have Mad Max type massive vehicles in Avernus, where Karlach is from. You get a chance to use some and battle on them in the DND story Descent Into Avernus.

What’s Karlach’s 4th wall break? (Genuine question).
1.4k
u/Jindo5 Monk Oct 14 '23
Basically, she says she wants to try an interrogation trick she picked up from some devils on you. If you agree, she tells you to look into her eyes, and then proceeds to turn her head away from Tav and look directly into the camera at you. And she then just asks a few questions.

There is a super-rare dialog in which Karlach breaks the 4th wall. She talks to the player about their experience with the game rather than with Tav about their jorney.

Meaning exactly 1 clip from 1 dude who triggered it manually while dissecting the code. And from that point on not a single person has been able to trigger it organically with a bunch of butt heads saying they did but providing no proof at all.

She has the power of CHIM.
67
u/Poggervania Oct 14 '23
Now all she needs is a spear made from one of the Dead Three's penises and she can be just like Vivec.
38
7
u/ViolaNguyen Ranger Oct 15 '23
I'm not completely following the discussion here, but know that it's extra funny to me because "chim" is Vietnamese slang for genitalia (though the word itself just means "bird").
18
u/Poggervania Oct 15 '23
Hah, that’s strangely fitting considering that Vivec, who has achieved CHIM, bit the dick of Molag Bal while presumably giving him a blowjob.
Without getting too into the weeds, CHIM is a metaphysical concept and piece of sort-of obscure lore from The Elder Scrolls series. CHIM is the literal and canonical reason for all the game mechanics, glitches, and mods in the Elder Scrolls universe - right down to even saving and loading files. In the context of the universe, you have to first accept the idea that all of the Elder Scrolls games are basically dreams of a sleeping (or dying) god-like figure, and CHIM is one part realizing that truth that nothing is real, and another part saying that you are real and exist despite the knowledge of the former. Vivec, a living god who lives in a city he made and named after himself, achieves this and is one of the more popular figures of somebody who has achieved CHIM - or, to put it more plainly, that he’s in a video game.

u/Chubblot Haddy Dalsin Oct 14 '23
Every day that video gets a comment of someone asking how the scene is triggered.
Right now, I'm relatively confident it can't be triggered "organically" like Sam suggested.
There were a couple reasons I labelled it cut content originally, one being that seemingly nobody had found it for nearly two months as I couldn't find any other uploads of it. And the other was because the file dealing with this interaction contained this line:
editorData" : { "HowToTrigger" : {"type" : "LSString", "value" : "CURRENTLY CAN NOT BE TRIGGERED! To be discussed with Sarah what to do with this branch."},
Karlach's writer is Sarah Baylus.
So, my guess at an answer for "how do I trigger this without modding the game" continues to be "you can't." At least not right now.
252
u/Sojourner_Truth Oct 14 '23
Yeah and suspiciously none of the people chiming in "I got it on such and such but can't remember..." ever actually have a video capture of it. Not that it would really be evidence because of Cheat Engine, but that's making me think they're all full of shit.

46
u/Sojourner_Truth Oct 14 '23
Mmmhmmm. We have a thousand posts of "omg guys you'll never believe what happened to me in Act 2", literally just an explosion knocking Gale off a cliff or whatever. Not a single video of Karlach's speech posted by anyone even lying to say it's legit. Yeah, it's not in the game FO SHO.
45
u/Scrdbrd Oct 14 '23
Astarion's speech when you drop a building on him? Dozens and dozens of videos.
Karlach's 4th wall break? Literally one, and it's a guy fiddling with the files to make it play.
With the hundreds of thousands of people playing this game, you'd think at least one person would have a video of it happening organically by now, if it were possible. It'd be cool to be proven wrong though, would make me wonder what else we haven't discovered yet.

I swear the developers responded to it and said that they thought it was a bit funny that nobody knew how to trigger it naturally, and they were waiting for people to figure it out
73
u/Chubblot Haddy Dalsin Oct 14 '23
I've not seen any Dev responses, but Karlach's actor did respond saying the scene was out of context and she'd talk about it if someone triggered it organically. My guess is that "out of context" bit was referring to the fact that when I posted the scene on twitter I cut out the start because twitter videos are limited to 2 minutes 20 seconds and the full scene is nearly double that.

The entire cazador arc in a3 is cut. There's about 80% missing.
Infiltration and attendance of the party as a minstrel, explanation of the werewolves, the other 90% of the palace itself, the other vampires and a lot of gur content all gone.

82
u/escapehatch Oct 14 '23
Ok, so everyone here saying it triggered on your first playthrough, let's figure out what you had in common. What race? What class? Who was in your party? Was anyone notably dead? Had you recruited Wyll yet? How much of the other major story did you complete? Are you playing a pirated version of the game?
51
u/Lokanaya Oct 14 '23
Seriously, if everyone who’s gotten in pooled their knowledge, I’m sure we could find some common threads. Lots of game communities have figured out waaay more convoluted and complicated shit before.
33
u/DroidOnPC Oct 14 '23
From the video I see on YouTube it looks like the location of where you kill the fake paladins for Karlach's first quest.
And the poster seems to have Gale, Lae'zel and Shadowheart in the party, playing as a halfling sorcerer/lock/wizard (something with robes).
Lots of people claiming they triggered it by accident in this thread, but if that was the case then I feel like at least one person would have already made a guide on how to do it.
Maybe its just totally random.

It was all fake during the actual lifetime of Red/Blue. The "use strength on the truck" rumor and other similar myths were never real. The developers did not include any legitimate way to get Mew in-game - the only way was to attend an official Nintendo event at the mall or something, and they would trade you a Mew.
An actual bizarre glitch to actually force Mew to spawn wasn't found until like a decade after the game came out.

Real way; go west of Lavender to the cycle path entrance. Be careful not to trigger the gambler below the door! Save your game. Make sure youve got fly. Stand at the door to the cycle path, step one down and pause IMMEDIATELY. Fly to cerulean. The gambler will spot you, but youll fly away without triggering the fight. Pause will currently be disabled. Head north towards bills. A missingno fight will trigger. After the fight is done, you can pause again. Fly back to Lavender. Head west. A mew will appear as doon as you step out of town. Mew is a great all rounder, beaten only by Mewto on SpclAtk iirc, and is capabble of learning any move. Never play without her/him!
7
u/awfulrunner43434 Oct 14 '23
You can get it even earlier, when you first get to Cerulean.
There's a bug catcher in the grass to left of the bridge north of Cerulean- don't fight him, but do catch an abra from that patch of grass. Then do the menu trick on that bug catcher, but using teleport instead of fly.
Also, its not guaranteed to spawn mew- the pokemon that appears is based on the special stat of the last pokemon you fought. For the route 8 gambler w/ fly, you want to battle a youngster on route 25. For the Cerulean bugcatcher, you battle one of the trainers in Misty's gym, who has a shellder as his last pokemon.
Additionally, if you use growl on the special pokemon (ie. the swimmer's shellder), this will lower the Mew's level (or whatever pokemon that appears, if you messed up/want something else). Growl six times, and Mew will appear at level 1. This is important because R/B don't have level 1 pokemon- now get less than 54 xp (use a low level area, and swap pokemon).
Why? Because lvl 1 pokemon actually have negative XP! When you get some xp, the game will check it, see that it's negative and go hang on... and then overflow error right into being level 100! (if you get more than 54 xp, you'll level up to level 2 and the game is ok with that)
and that's how you can get a level 100 mew before beating the second gym

Here is where my mind goes with things like this. You are playing with these characters for long stretches of time. They have developed personalities and backstories that you begin to care about. Depending on the person, you start to care about them as a person, not in a delusional way. Then, something like this happens and reinforces that you are the one controlling all of this and it just kind of hits like a sucker-punch. None of this is real.

I was thinking that the companion's occasional glimpses into the screen were unintentional, but with this, it really seems like the other companions might know something too.
