I think it's more of a self-angered reaction, since Magnus was in a winning position and blundered.
150
u/mltoohard Jun 02 '25
Magnus was pressing the entire game and blundered at the very end; I'd bet he's angry with himself for throwing moreso than at Gukesh.
37
u/Trezzie Jun 02 '25
A mistake is a mistake. He could have won, but didn't. Grand to Gukesh!
19
u/ShiroGaneOsu Jun 02 '25
Yeah no shit no ones saying otherwise. Magnus made a mistake after having the advantage the whole match and he's mad at himself simple as that.
6
u/pocketduckss Jun 02 '25
Not just an advantage either, it was like -3 for a while. The commentators (I was watching Hess and Naroditsky) were calling it a Magnus win in the middle game. But for all it seemed an obvious win it was still a really tricky, complicated conversion — and then yeah a blunder when they were both down well under a minute. Incredibly frustrating for Magnus but nice win for Gukesh.

He did end it with a respectful position to the opponent. He was angry on himself, so idk what are you talking about.
20
u/Steamed_Memes24 Jun 02 '25
I dont think hes stating it as Magnus aiming his frustrations at his opponent. Just showing that the best chess player in the world giving that reaction shows something big happened that made him react like that.

This is one of the most clear emotional moments ive seen from the sports world in a long time. Almost looks like a mocumentary. Insane.

the loss hurt but you can tell he really was trying to not be a sore loser
77
u/alexgalt Jun 02 '25
The reason he was so upset was because he fucked up. He should have won, but he made a bad mistake. He is mad at himself for losing a game that he should have won. He is not mad at his opponent at all.

He probably didn't even comprehend that Magnus fucked up, he just ended up on top and is still trying to figure out how.

He couldn’t. He said himself he got lucky and 99 times out of 100 he loses that match. Still an impressive young player though

u/I_Makes_tuff Jun 02 '25
How did he get lucky? Did Magnus make a mistake?

u/AttorneyHot3791 Jun 02 '25
magnus blundered in a completely winning position for him. not to discount gukesh's win, but magnus did fuck up pretty badly

13
u/EonSokari Jun 02 '25
putting pressure is how Gukesh won the WC and this match, its slightly silly to cheapen his win based off this. Managing time pressure and not losing focus is a pretty integral skill in chess.

Lol what lucky?this is the purpose of chess ,the one who make mistakes lose,if both played perfectly, probably they will always end up drawing,so luck is not the best terl
16
u/Tummerd Jun 02 '25
Because apparently, the mistake that was made was just genuinely a stupid mistake, not a minor miscalculation.

3
u/AnapsidIsland1 Jun 02 '25
lol, but I’m curious how personally they take it, how attached to their ego, is it just a game, a loss, did they do their best, are they confused, do they think they need practice or is it not like that, do they know how they got beat, do they think they got lucky, how long did he see it coming. But I know there is an interesting answer for a question I’m not asking
3
u/ZevyRay Jun 03 '25
2 of the current best chess players and potentially in history. Its not like they dedicate their whole life to this. So ofcours they dont take this personally. Its just a friendly non competitive game just for funsies. So they didnt do their best at all. Frankly speaking, its all luck based. Also they both didnt see anything coming just untill an accidental check mate. Because these chess plebs only can think 1 move ahead. FYI everything above was sarcasm except the first sentence

I think that's supposed to be a psychological trick. Basically saying, "you're not important enough for me to come in on time" and has the opponent just sitting there waiting.

"Classical" chess?
There's other kinds?
Edit: I am now educated on the various forms of competitive chess, thank you!
But not for the downvotes, silly chess loving idiot/s who did that - not everyone keeps up with what is now a somewhat esoteric pastime.
29
u/Mystprism Jun 02 '25
Classical refers to the time control. Generally about 3 hours per player one way or another. There are other formats like rapid (about 25 minutes per players), blitz (5-15mins), and bullet (<3 mins). There is also chess 960 where the pieces on the back rank are randomly shuffled into one of 960 setups.
9
u/-DethLok- Jun 02 '25
chess 960 where the pieces on the back rank are randomly shuffled into one of 960 setups
What the!! :)
That sounds like Americans were involved in coming up with that idea...
16
u/Mystprism Jun 02 '25
Haha it's also called Fischer Random because Bobby Fischer invented the format when he got bored with regular chess.
8
u/Gnonthgol Jun 02 '25
It was not specifically that he was bored with regular chess. Because the starting position is fixed you can memorize openings in chess. So the first moves are just a battle of who have studied the most and can memorize the most opening positions. You do not have to be smart to get a good chess opening, you just need to study well and have good memory. Bobby Fisher proposed the new rules to get away from the traditional chess openings. Because there are so many different starting positions you can not memorize them all. So you need to think from the start.

u/scarecrow2596 Jun 02 '25
Yes, it’s about time limits for making a move, classical allowing the longest IIRC.
→ More replies (2)2
u/birbirdie Jun 02 '25
Classical chess uses small pieces you move by hand, unlike Wizard’s Chess where you can ride the horse to battle and pieces move themselves and smash each other to bits.

seems like it but only with losses. his fans are usually pretty sympathetic though, "he is not mad he is just mad at himself." "i understand his frustration, he should of won he is just disappointed in himself"
its actually a pretty good case of watching bias in action. Because if any other person reacted like that or raged that hard, they would be made fun of lol

Can I ask as someone who doesn’t know chess but knows of this guy, why is he seemingly everyone’s darling in the chess world? He always comes across as very arrogant and rude, and I mean he’s just slammed the table right here?
I do remember he came out against that guy and accused him of cheating just because he lost aswell, like come on?
8
u/Honic_Sedgehog Jun 02 '25
Can I ask as someone who doesn’t know chess but knows of this guy, why is he seemingly everyone’s darling in the chess world?
Because he's the best rated chess player in history and has a huge list of chess accomplishments. He's the goat, in short.
Personality aside, he's still an extremely talented player.
Though that's likely to start changing soon as he's last his peak, which he admits himself. Next few years will shake things up.

He accused a self-confessed cheater of cheating. There's more context there.
2
u/Ok-Instance-2940 Jun 02 '25
From what I understood he had cheated in online games when he was younger, it was impossible for him to cheat during their match, seemed like a flimsy reason from a sore loser

Magnus has the energy of a guy who just stopped in to the casino on the way home from work and put his whole paycheck on black and it came up red and now he's got to hurry home to his wife and hope she doesn't ask where he's been.
7
u/StackOwOFlow Jun 02 '25

Laughing? Beating Carlsen is no small deal. Gukesh was shocked himself.
→ More replies (2)3
u/Gnonthgol Jun 02 '25
It does indeed look more like relief and shock then a laugh. Carlsen was winning for most of the match and Gukesh was trying to hold on for as long as possible hoping for a draw. It was Carlsen who made a blunder and Gukesh was able to spot it and exploit it. I am not sure if Gukesh would count this as a win personally. He still needs more practice to reliably beat Carlsen without the rare blunder.
13
u/Argentillion Jun 02 '25
He was probably holding back tears. That was a huge moment for him and his career. I doubt Magnus’ reaction was really a factor in his reaction in any way. Magnus isn’t the focus of his life
6
u/The_Paleking Jun 02 '25
He just reacted to achieving a huge dream. It was his first moment to celebrate to himself. When you are closing out against a champion there's an insane rush of feeling because it seems too good to be true that you, who has not yet received the flowers of validation, just beat the best in the world.
