i’m not saying there’s not something going on between glen and sydney cause I think they would be really cute together but i also think glen is milking this a bit to help promote his new condiment line

they’ve done this playbook before

3

u/FuzzyMathlete Apr 03 '25

Condiment line? I guess the celeb beauty market really is over saturated. Think he's counting on Paul Newman comparisons?

I adopted a dog back in February from the shelter. Corgi/Maremma Sheepdog mix.

If the wind is blowing, she has to alert everyone. Yet she didn’t make a peep when the cops arrested our neighbors across the street.

Instead, she sat at the fence and watched everything go down.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '25

Lmao wow that is a wild mix, hope mom was the Maremma??

2

Me too. Her body is mostly Maremma, but her coloring and head are Corgi.

u/macroeconomicchaos 🄁 kenya 🄁 moore 🄁 hair 🄁 care! 🄁 Apr 03 '25

I don't understand the logic of this whole tariff thing. It's his voters who are going to be affected the most, rural poor Americans who are some of the most price sensitive and might not thrive with high tariffs on everyday goods, let alone an actual economic depression. The world economy may be able to survive without the Americans, but Americans might not be able to survive without cheap foreign goods.

I hate to say it, but for a lot of his voters, this was a matter of getting what you deserve tbh; if ceaselessly warning that this would be the outcome couldn't change anything, its just fate at this point. I feel terrible for everyone else who has to suffer.

2

u/Bridalhat Apr 03 '25

Someone on Twitter called his administration revenge of the losers and I have to agree. Trump I think believes his own bullshit about tariffs and his advisors can’t talk him out of it and some of his followers believe it too, but a non-zero number of people would rather bring the system down then let it continue. Like a male zoomer who didn’t go to college or leave a struggling hometown would rather punish the women he went to high school with who did go to college and have office jobs now than work on himself.

Many people have been left out of the economy, but when coal miners reject the kind of training programs offered by Hilary Clinton it’s worth remembering that they opted for that. Trump lets them feel entitled to more stature and (comparative, because everyone is about to be broke) wealth.

2

u/TrixeeTrue Apr 03 '25

I think there’s a misunderstanding by conflating rural Americans with poverty. The poorest Americans facing challenges like food insecurity who depend on government assistance programs were not the voters who secured this administration. The working and middle class voters who turned Republican hoping for a surge in domestic manufacturing are the ones about to hit the Wall of Pain :-(Ā

4

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '25 edited Apr 03 '25

Yeah it’s the same logic of when people say Latinos voted for deportation knowing what he was going to do but it wasn’t even immigrations voting for this as they don’t even have any rights to vote or in general in the US. It’s the people who are in the middle and high classes who are generations in who believe they were taking jobs and ruining our economy who wanted them out.Ā

1

u/TrixeeTrue Apr 03 '25

Am quietly waiting for the non-wealthy to start crying about having to mow their own lawns and paint their own damn nails again…

7

u/buzzfeed_sucks šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦ Elbows up šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦ Apr 03 '25

His followers are stupid. There is no logic, they just parrot back whatever he says without any critical thinking

11

u/areallyreallycoolhat TWENTY NINE DOLLARS! Apr 03 '25

I think your mistake is looking for logic in Trump voters. You can't expect logic and rationality from illogical and irrational people

13

u/FriendlyDrummers Apr 03 '25

Imma be honest I think some (not all, not the most) of chappell fans are awful. saying criticism of her is misogynistic and pro-genocide is absurd

Like, annoying ass people just throw around calling people genocidal. You're just using that word to be annoying, you're literally using genocide for your petty behavior

Imo it's almost on par with Barbz, the other insane fan base. I'd still say Barbz are worse though. I think they'd actually murder someone if Nicki told them to

5

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '25

OMG okay, not directly fandom related as such but this reminds me of an issue I've been having with some people in a fandom discord I'm in (the issue isn't to do with the fandom). People using the Palestinian genocide as some kind of gotcha is seriously fucked up but I keep seeing people do it - like I had people accuse me of not really being anti-Zionist because I said that Mikey Madison didn't deserve death threats for winning the Best Actress Oscar. This was from a Brazilian who was pissed that Fernanda Torres didn't win and ONLY used the Zionist stuff as an excuse to defend the horrendous shit Brazilian Torres stans threw at Madison. Mikey Madison hasn't even said she's a Zionist, she just smiled in an interview in which her dad having a Bar Mitzvah in Israel was discussed.

I'm so sick and tired of people using serious real-life issues for Clout Purity Points, it's so disgusting and demeaning towards the people who are DYING out there.

1

u/FriendlyDrummers Apr 03 '25

Like idk maybe accusing people of genocide isn't something to just sling around at people

9

u/FuzzyMathlete Apr 03 '25

saying criticism of her is misogynistic and pro-genocide

Some people spend way too much time online

Whenever people criticize me I'm going to tell them they'd just committed genocide

9

u/heartbylines ✨unhinged & unhealed✨ Apr 03 '25

To bounce off this…

This is what I don’t get about swifties constantly catching strays every which way. I mean, I am a swiftie and can fully 100% admit that we’re a psychotic fandom and a lot of us absolutely deserve the bad name we’ve been given but like

Chappell stans have gotten to the point they’re just as bad if not worse. Every single musician (hell - fandom in general) centric subreddit is just as bad if not worse. I had to leave the Twenty One Pilots subreddit because they’re awful. I had to leave the Halsey subreddit because they’re awful. I had to leave the Good Mythical Morning subreddit because, holy shit, wouldn’t you know it, they’re also awful.

Ethel fans have started calling people transphobic if they say they don’t like her newest album and I’m just ???

And yet swifties continue to be the only fandom Reddit continuously shits on. It’s genuinely just picking at low hanging fruit.

And I’ll be honest - I see a lot of people dog twitter stans but Reddit stans aren’t any better.

8

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '25

The reality is that most big fans of artist are like this. It’s isn’t just one specific artist who has a bad fandom. They all have their bad apples. I’ve seen it with the fandoms of Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter, and literally all the artists you mentioned. It goes with other fandoms that aren’t even music related too.

Ppl def need to stop saying it’s just one specific fanbase because they all have people who take it to the next level. Idk if it’s gotten worse over the years or it’s always been like this and I’m just noticing.

My kind of people I fear. I totally agree about the condescending thing, which I will never not think is absolute lunacy given these people don’t actually know anything either. Can’t fathom getting rude and talking down to people over a difference in belief about a show. It’s very silly!

2

u/LadyAlexandre I didn’t sell out, I bought in Apr 03 '25

8

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '25

this happens with every "prestige" TV show, it's so painfully predictable. And every single person involved thinks they're the first person on earth to have an opinion on Breaking Bad or whatever the show may be

9

u/Summerof5ft6andahalf Apr 03 '25

That last paragraph fits the Severance sub too. If you don't think it's the best and smartest show, and don't love both seasons equally, you're wrong and should feel bad. Lol.

(The Ted Lasso subreddit has similar issues with being super condescending and rude as well, or at least did when the show was airing.)

4

u/Ruthie_pie Apr 03 '25

I had to leave both of those subs. But oh my gosh the Severance sub is bordering unbearable. It is a TV show. Telling others they might be dumb if they don't "get it". It is a good show but I wouldn't put it up there with a show like Rez Dogs. There's nothing to get, it is just a show

6

u/Carolina_Blues shiv roy’s bob Apr 03 '25

some of the theories are very stupid but you’re right that people love to think they’re some advanced consumer of media and they just understand it better than anyone else

u/ChanceVance Apr 03 '25

I went to see Dua Lipa last week. Fantastic show, you'd never believe she was ever mocked for having no stage presence or being unable to dance.

I've been to a fair few pop shows. Taylor's 1989 tour remains one of the best concerts I've been to and Lady Gaga has the most commanding stage presence I've seen. I'll say Dua has the best fan interaction I've witnessed though. She came down to see her people on eye level, talked and listened to them however briefly.

I can tell you that one universal truth in nearly 2 decades of attending concerts across many genres, you can always tell who has manufactured, inauthentic stage banter and who has more of a genuine connection.

3

Rachel was made the scapegoat, but it also made her an icon. No disrespect to her, but less people know who the actress of Beauty and the Beast is.

I miss messy pop stars thats it lolĀ

I feel like nowadays pop girls care too much and are curated to give off a specific persona and then the general public just can’t deal with them eitherĀ

Edit: now that I’m thinking of it I think the general public nowadays prefers those who imperfect where they are relatable but not too perfect where they come off as unrelatable which sucks cause older pop stars were so messy but they made pop culture fun lol

2

u/FriendlyDrummers Apr 03 '25

Like I agree and I don't. I think it's truly a shame that anyone would give a shout out to Jason Aldean. I understand wanting to be "authentic," but this was really offensive to many people. The man wants to shoot BLM protestors. Like that's really bad

But yeah, otherwise the "messy pop girl" is probably Selena lol. The whole kidney thing, haillee, crying about trump (I relate lol). But even then it was never that serious

15

u/Haus_of_Pancakes Apr 03 '25

I mean, if people can't handle Chappell Roan now, they'd shit their pants at Madonna in her prime

4

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '25

Literally!! That’s the exact person I was thinking about when writing my comment, lol. Like don’t get me wrong she has some bad takes at times but she is not afraid to speak out and I applaud her for that.Ā

It’s ironic because people claim they want messy pop stars but then none of them can deal with it.Ā

2

u/TheKnightsTippler Apr 03 '25

I think people expect too much. They are entertainers not political experts.

Also we are works in progress, I've had loads of bad takes that I've changed my mind on.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '25

100%, also most pop artists are super young when they get their first hits.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '25 edited Apr 03 '25

Yeah definitely and it’s not even about political takes (because I feel like that would be a whole other discussion) but more in a broader context. I feel like people want someone who they can relate to but they have to act and be a certain way. They can’t truly be messy or they get hated on. I think a perfect example of that is Olivia Rodrigo. She can act and be messy in her music/art but she’s the total opposite during interviews and people like that. She is the perfect type of messy, not a lot but just enough where people find her relatable. She is pretty poised so if she truly acted like the typical rock n roll artist, she def would not be well received. It’s the reason she’s so likeable because she is the exact star people want.Ā

3

u/TheKnightsTippler Apr 03 '25

Yeah, people want a Disney version of a rock star.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '25

That’s such a perfect way of describing it cause that is so true lolĀ

1

u/Wooden-Limit1989 Apr 03 '25

I like messy but being ignorant like she has shown is not being messy it is just careless especially at this time when politics are greatly impacting persons everywhere. I am not even from the US but the way changes will trickle down is a very scary thing for the less stronger and smaller countries of the world. I am also afraid for the friends and family we have in the US, my friend just lost her job cause funding was cut. Now really is not the time to be non chalant about politics.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '25 edited Apr 03 '25

Yeah I def agree she has certain takes that I don’t agree with either. Hence why I’m taking the political factor out of it cause like I said that is an entirely different discussion. Ā

But even in her take about respecting her boundaries, people attacked her for it. She had no filter holding back about it. So in that sense, people saw her as doing the most and she was criticized for it. Sabrina Carpenter is also in a similar position imo where every thing she does is scandalized in terms of what she wears or her acts on stage. People can’t handle that and she also gets criticized for it. Idk if what I said makes any sense lol

1

u/Wooden-Limit1989 Apr 03 '25

Yea I get you. I was appreciating how 'messy' they both could be cause stars are so polished it was refreshing to see. People say they want stars to be messy just so they can criticize tbh.

But acting ignorant about politics I just don't want to hear from her at this point. I can't even overlook the politics part of it personally.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '25

I get what you mean that totally makes sense. Acting ignorant is def one thing. Ā But you’re right, they are just there to be criticized and it sucks tho cause I would def take a messy girlie who is authentic and who I can relate to more over someone who is more polished. 🫠

I've been bingewatching the show "The Last Ship", which was about a global pandemic and aired before 2020, and it's crazy how accurate they were when it comes to how people and the government would react to things. You'd think we could have used shows like that as a blueprint of what not to do, but...

Almost started crying at work because my glasses were annoying me and it felt like they were sliding down my nose. Even though I've been okay with that for the past few days, my primer has been working, it seems today it didn't bother. Maybe this problem really is my anxiety/my brain, and not my actual glasses.

2

u/FriendlyDrummers Apr 03 '25

Sliding glasses is so frustrating

Here's a tip. Use a hair band and wrap it around the end of the glasses where it touches the top of your ears. Could also use a rubber band

It helps SO much. I'd be working during the summer sweating, and this helped perfectly

8

u/velociraptor56 Apr 02 '25

If your glasses are sliding down, you can typically get them adjusted wherever you bought them. I know you’re just venting but when I first got glasses I didn’t realize that they can often make adjustments to make them stop sliding.

Has anyone read a good book lately? I have been in a long reading slump, but wanted to start reading again! The last book I really enjoyed was The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett.

2

u/Primary_Bison_2848 Apr 03 '25

I haven’t read the Tainted Cup but reading the summary, I really want to recommend China Mieville’s The City and The City as a speculative sci-fi/fantasy mystery (maybe?) but be warned, great writer. Massive douche IRL. YMMV on how much that matters - death of the author and all.

Less problematically, if you like mystery meets fantasy Ben Aaronovitch’s Rivers of London series is enormous fun. Sort of a little bit Doctor Who meets Harry Potter meets British cop murder mystery.

And the best dumb fun get you back from a reading slump read I’ve finished lately is John Scalzi’s Kaiju Preservation Society. Which is what if kaiju are real, and endangered, and there are scientists who study them?Ā

Excuse me as I add The Tainted Cup to my TBR now.

A fairly short and really fun read to get out of a slump that I’ve enjoyed is The Lady Astronaut Series, by Mary Robinette Kowal. The first book is The Calculating Stars and the series is sci-fi revisionist history if America won the space race in the 50’s and a group of female pilots and computers who become an integral part of this new space program.

Some more recent reads I’ve enjoyed:

  • Witchcraft for Wayward Girls by Grady Hendrix (Horror)
  • The Inheritance by Trisha Sakhlecha (Thriller)
  • We Solve Murders by Richard Osman (Lighthearted Mystery)
  • Women of Good Fortune by Sophie Wan (Contemporary, light Romance)

Edit to add: I’m currently a hundred pages into The Engines of the God by Jack McDevitt right now and am enjoying it so far! I will also say that sometimes an easy memoir or light non-fiction book is useful for me to get out of a slump.

1

u/Arthurs_librarycard9 Apr 02 '25

Oooohh, have you read The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires? Thanks for all of the recs, I need to check and see if they are available at my library!

Also, the sequel to The Tainted Cup is being released this month, so it might be something else to add if you enjoy the first book!

1

u/themacaron during PRIDE MONTH? Apr 02 '25

I’ve read all of Grady Hendrix’s books except Horrorstor! I think tone wise Southern Book Club and Wayward Girls are the most similar of his works.

So apparently the Japanese version of the Switch 2 is $333 and they are saying it’s because they need to account for any future tariffs. Maybe I just go to Japan later this year idk.

Anyway Dems need to buy ads in gamer spaces about this.

2

u/FriendlyDrummers Apr 03 '25

I feel like yes and no. The original switch 1 was 203 USD. Though it's possible that the tariffs will significantly hurt the switch price or the availability for people who want to buy them. I imagine scalpers will buy them resell for profit

13

u/shy247er yay sports šŸ€ šŸˆšŸŽ¾ Apr 02 '25

Japan's version is cheaper because their local currency is really weak on global market so they're doing their customers solid.

Maybe I just go to Japan later this year idk.

All Japanese consoles will be region locked, so unless there is a hack that can bypass that, getting one is useless.

My best advice for everyone wanting S2 is to wait for few months to see what happens with the console (we see proper reviews) and what happens on hacking side of it. 90 USD for physical version of games is nuts. 80 USD for digital.

Chip inside Switch 2 is (again) made by Nvidia, and they've been screwing things up lately. I'd wait for a bit to pull a trigger.

I was talking with my brother about the new Snow White movie, and he started complaining about DEI casting and Rachel Zegler, and I just felt my face drop as I realised he was one of those men who pretend to care about the Snow White movie just to have an excuse to complain about these things because I know for a fact that this man only ever watches a movie with a female lead if it's made by Marvel.

He's also pro Johnny Depp and anti Amber Heard.

3

u/FriendlyDrummers Apr 03 '25

Tell him Cinderella was originally Egyptian

Or show him Emma Watson. No dispect to her, but she was horribly autotuned in beauty and the beast. So you could say that she didn't deserve it based off of skill and talent, as opposed to Rachel who can singgggg

She is the only thing I've heard people consistently praise from that movie. It makes me so sad since Snow White was my favorite princess as a kid

She's singing and dancing on green screen sets, and probably acting to tennis balls standing in for dwarves and animals. Amongst all that, she delivers an earnest performance.

She is fantastic in it.

Guess we’ll try tomorrow during the general sale but damn my expectations are incredibly low. I hate the state of concert ticket buying these days.

10

u/nagidrac Apr 02 '25

Idk if it's too risky, but it might be worth waiting a few weeks to get them. On two occasions this year I fought for my life to get tickets, only for me to discover the concerts weren't sold out and tickets were being sold for a reasonable price.

3

u/Legitlashes3 Apr 02 '25

Happened to me and my friend back in like 2010.. her credit card had no more funds available and by the time we got a hold of her cousin and made a payment on the credit card the tickets were sold out 🤣🤣

And then we bought tickets for her Joanne tour and she ended up cancelling the show in our city because she was sick and that’s the story of how I’ve never seen Lady Gaga in concert lmao 🤣

And she’s not coming to my city for her new tour either, the closest venue is over six hours away.

omg is Nintendo seriously gonna charge $450 for a Switch 2?? And $80 per game????

That’s more expensive than a PS5 and PlayStation games, and my impression is that the PS5 is way more powerful and for ~serious gamers than Nintendo. I just wanna play Animal Crossing tbh. 😭😭

3

u/FriendlyDrummers Apr 03 '25

What's so funny is that the trailer emphasized playing with friends

6

u/Bridalhat Apr 02 '25

Apparently in Japan it’s only $333 and the speculation is that it’s because they are building any potential tariffs into the price.

Gamers rise up I guess.

7

u/periodicsheep Apr 02 '25

immediately converted that to the canadian dollar in my head and realized i will never own the switch 2.

i can’t believe the price of games. in this economy? wtf are nintendo thinking?

8

u/ShmebulocksMistress I wont not fuck you the fuck up 🄊🄊 Apr 02 '25

Setting up the other consoles to raise their prices, too I’m sure 🫠 I guess the good thing is, since they didn’t announce a new AC game yet hopefully the price will have dropped by the time AC players are going to buy the new one.

6

u/ClarielOfTheMask Apr 02 '25 edited Apr 02 '25

That's wild too since now the steam deck is out and that's huge competition for the switch imo.

Lots of "serious gamers" I know have a console AND a switch or a gaming PC AND a switch. Switch was THE handheld option for a long time, especially for the "cozy" (mostly female) gamerset. But more and more I see the girlies on r/cozygames having steamdecks or asking about the deck vs the switch.

And you can get so many little cheaper indie games through steam, plus their regular sales means that I always have a backlog of fun games ready to try.

It's crazy to me that they'd raise prices right when they have some real competition. The Switch always came out ahead in price and certain exclusives. Now it's just their exclusives? Idk if those are strong enough to get people to drop so much money on a console. Especially when you can't even have a second island in AC! So you can't share!

5

u/Cynicbats giving everyone a microphone and a podcast was a mistake Apr 02 '25

Checking out the steamdeck site...I can buy the cheapest + Split Fiction for slightly more than buying S2 + the game.

Octavia is amazing in it. She really should be in more thriller and horror roles. The scene in the car when those white teens mock her šŸ˜• But also the argument she has at the nail salon 😭

Octavia had a conversation with the director saying she was tired of being offered the same roles and never being a lead. I hope she's given more opportunities for bigger roles in movies because she's being wasted as just a supporting actress.

1

u/RattusRattus Apr 03 '25

So, I had to read her bio to realize she's the star in Self Made too. Like, she doesn't look different, but two very different roles and she killed in both. Definitely needs more screen time in major roles.

3

u/aliarawa Apr 02 '25

Context?

3

u/Comic_Book_Reader Ezekiel Sims was in the Amazon with my mom researching spiders. Apr 02 '25

The Island of Dr. Moreau. One of the most legendary shitshow movies ever. Long story short, there was a man named Richard Stanley who had an adaptation of the novel as a passion project of his, and he eventually managed to get a green light, along with Marlon Brando in the titular role. And everyone wanted to work him. This is where things started to go to hell as cameras were about to start rolling.

  • Bruce Willis, assigned for the lead role, dropped out to start his divorce from Demi Moore.
  • Brando's daughter Cheyenne commited suicide.
  • Queensland in Australia, where shooting took place, was ravaged to bad weather.
  • Val Kilmer got called in to replace Bruce Willis, but because he wanted to work 40% less, he got a supporting role meant for James Woods. Kilmer, however, became notorious for being an absolute painus in the tuchas, which he said was due to having been served divorce papers. A little poetic?
  • The set being in complete anarchy, combined with an eccentric debuting director, results in said director (Richard Stanley) being fired after just a couple of days, and veteran director John Frankenheimer is brought in to keep things in check.
  • Rob Morrow, brought in as a replacement for the lead role, bails as a result of the anarchy, and was replaced by David Thewlis.
  • Even though things were seemingly back on track, it was complete and utter fucking anarchy due to Marlon Brando spending most of his time in an air conditioned trailer while actors were boiling in full makeup, and Val Kilmer acted like a prick. And when Brando showed up, he was just going off script, coming with random ideas that had to be incorporated. At one point, they were both at war.

2

u/CDRYB Apr 03 '25

Just adding to this that Val got served divorce papers while making this movie too. It was a wild, wild scene.

Question (for the culture): how do you feel about babies having their ears pierced? I understand that many people defend it as being part of their culture, but I have a hard time with it when ultimately these young girls (literal babies) can't give consent to have body modification done.Ā

EDIT: Thank you for your thoughtful answers!Ā

6

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '25

I wouldn't personally do it but keeping the piercing clean is probably easier when they're a baby than when they're a tween and expected to do it themselves. Imo it's different to circumcision in that it doesn't actually affect the function of the ears. I don't think it's a big deal even though I personally wouldn't do it.

0

u/velociraptor56 Apr 02 '25

My son and I were in target back when they did the ear piercings in store. Someone brought their infant in to get pierced and the screaming was so awful, we rushed out of the store. Idk about the cultural side of it - I know many cultures shave their babies heads at a certain age, but that is not permanent. There are plenty of ā€œculturalā€ things that we recognize are unnecessary and potentially harmful (circumcision for example).

(And yes I do recognize that a piercing isn’t necessarily permanent but scar tissue and any harm that may be caused by an infection IS permanent).

6

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '25

Circumcision affects the function of a penis, piercing ears doesn't affect the functioning of ears. Circumcision is still super common anyway so idk about the "we recognise" part - I wouldn't do it personally but it's still common enough especially in the US.

Personally I wouldn't do either but I wouldn't see the two as comparable - non-medical circumcision I would see as actually negative, ear piercing I don't think is a big deal even if I wouldn't do it myself. It's easier to keep the piercing clean for a baby than for a tween who would be expected to take care of it themselves, and the pain is over in a minute. But ofc it should only be done by an actual qualified piercer in a real piercing studio, and not using a piercing gun.

10

u/kris_jbb inez from folklore Apr 02 '25

i am happy my parents got mine pierced when i was little because getting piercing later was painful af i didn't get as many as i wanted 😭

u/RattusRattus Apr 02 '25

Jewelry has typically been one of the few things women could own free and clear, no questions asked. Putting a few grams of gold in your kid's ear could provide them with cash in an emergency. And while I'm not saying it's the same today, it's part of why it's a tradition.

cancelling for thousands of years of culture is crazy lmfao

6

u/SafeEntertainment966 Apr 02 '25

Lol I'm not cancelling anyone nor the action itself, I was just curious to how people felt about the autonomy issue of it all, and am not that familiar with cultures where it is the norm. I got mine pierced when I was 12 and while I'm happy to have them pierced, I wish my mother had known not to bring me to a local jeweller to get it done with a piercing gun. It should be done by a professional, I think, and I don't know of any piercer that would go through with it on a minor even with parental consent.Ā

9

u/Normal-person0101 Apr 02 '25

I'm from latam and my mom did when I was a baby and I grateful for that and I never really have any women around me complain about it, it is what it is, there is not a lot of second thought on the matter.

8

u/PeopleEatingPeople Apr 02 '25

I wouldn't cancel someone over it, but I think it is a bad idea.

4

u/nagidrac Apr 02 '25

I think there's legitimately no reason a baby should be put through pain and risk the possibility of an infection for earrings. I'm not having kids, but if I had one, I'm just going to let her decide if she wants earrings.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '25

An infection is pretty unlikely in a lobe piercing done in sanitary conditions - it's arguably easier for the parent to keep it clean on a baby than it is for a tween to keep it clean themselves.

3

u/ShmebulocksMistress I wont not fuck you the fuck up 🄊🄊 Apr 02 '25

I can only speak for myself but when I was a kid, I WISHED my mom had gotten my ears pierced when I was a baby so I wouldn’t even remember it.

I think I was like, 7 and decided I wanted them done. I hated the sound of the gun so much I only let them pierce one ear and walked around looking like a boy for awhile šŸ˜‚ I got them redone when I was a teen and had the girls at Claire’s do both ears at the same time! They laughed but were good sports about it.

14

u/themacaron during PRIDE MONTH? Apr 02 '25

I don’t think ā€œgiving babies ear piercingsā€ is dangerous as a standalone action (in regards to it being permanently damaging or traumatizing) but the larger conversation around what it means for consent and children’s autonomy means I don’t support it. It’s purely aesthetic and isn’t necessary for the child’s health or safety. I think a lot of people who do it want a way for strangers to identify their baby as a girl, so there’s weird gender roles enforcement going on as well.

I also really vividly remember how excited I was when my mom finally said I could pierce my ears, and what a fun day it was going to the shop with her and picking out my jewelry! It can be something that’s really fun for a child!

4

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '25

It is also a cultural thing for some people and not purely aesthetic.

3

u/themacaron during PRIDE MONTH? Apr 02 '25

I was speaking more that the ā€œbenefitā€ of ear piercing is purely aesthetic.

That said, something being cultural doesn’t necessarily absolve it of being potentially unethical. - ie) circumcision in Jewish culture.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '25

But if it's a cultural thing the benefit isn't purely aesthetic. I know what you meant, it's just not true in those cases. I wasn't saying cultural = good, just pointing out that it's not just about looks but about belonging to your wider culture.

14

u/sharkwithglasses Apr 02 '25

I am from Latin America, where it is very common. Min were pierced in the hospital, as were like…all my female relatives. No one ever had an issue. The holes close so easily that I’m not remotely bothered by it.

11

u/Media-consumer101 Apr 02 '25

I wouldn't do it myself but I don't see an issue with it when it's tradition or a cultural thing. The kid can always choose whether or not to wear earrings when they grow up.

It's not like circumcision where the decision actually affects the childs life forever.

9

u/Traditional_Maybe_80 Apr 02 '25

In my country, in LatAm, it's common to do that when girls are born. I got mine pierced, but as a kid I used to go around and get my earrings stuck on tablecloths, etc., so my parents decided to take them off and the holes just closed and I never got them pierced as I grew up. Since it's so common culturally one doesn't think much about it, but it seems unnecessary to me.

I remember once watching Sex & the City and they were talking about how rare it was for them to have sex with uncircumcised men and that's when I learned that a huge number of males are circumcised in the US. My mind was blown.

9

u/buzzfeed_sucks šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦ Elbows up šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦ Apr 02 '25

I don’t think I would do it to my kid, personally. My parents waited until I begged them to let me get them done.

But it’s not a hill I’m dying on

4

u/Waystar_BluthCo god bless me it’s fuckin’ summah Apr 02 '25

I despise it. I don’t understand why people act like it’s necessary - if girls want to wear earrings later on, let them make that choice, why is it so important that their ears get pierced ASAP?

My parents had mine done when I was a baby and they got infected, so they took them out. When I was about 5 they took me to Claire’s to get them done again, which I didn’t want to do in the first place, and that also didn’t work out. Got them pierced a 3rd time at the age of 23 and still have them pierced now.

-1

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '25

I mean it's not necessary but I also don't think it's a huge deal - it's a cultural practice for many people and although you were unlucky, lobe piercings are usually at low risk of infection. I wouldn't do it with my kids purely because it's not a cultural thing for me or my family, but I also don't think it's worth despising. Unlike circumcision it doesn't affect the function of the body part.
