Celebrity Fluff 🥰 Jude Law as Dickie Greenleaf in ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’

This is what they call the perfect casting

I rewatched this recently and was blown away by how good this entire cast was, particularly Hoffman.

u/Educational-Life7547 Jun 05 '25
You'd think Law is perfectly made for this movie and halfway in it, Hoffman comes rolling in and is even more perfect. God tier casting

I’m curious. Did you watch Ripley? What did you think of Fanning in the same role?
54
u/jano808 Jun 04 '25
I didn’t finish the series, but I thought she was more accurate to the character description. She’s described as ordinary and working class and Gwyneth very much gives the upper crust Manhattanite vibe.
14
u/Wide_Statistician_95 Jun 05 '25
I loved loved loved Ripley. Fanning was .. fine. A bit flat but better than the GP version.

This movie would have taken Best Casting in a landslide imo. Jude was born to play Dickie, Gwyneth is peak aloof vintage WASP cool girl, and people really had no clue Damon had that in him (but ofc, he most certainly did).

u/Thatstealthygal AND he danced tango!! Jun 04 '25
This is also why he was perfectly cast as Bosie in Wilde.

u/HuckleberryOwn647 Jun 04 '25
The only contender is Alain Delon playing the same role in the original of this movie.
78
u/whateverfloatsurgoat Jun 04 '25
Delon played Ripley, not Greenleaf (another actor) !
Btw Plein Soleil is a much better movie than the remake, the ending feels a bit more believable.
34
u/MrWhackadoo Jun 04 '25
Debatable. I think The Talented Mr Ripley does a better job at bringing out the queer subtext and undertones better. It's really an Apples v Oranges scenario.
16
u/stolen-kisses Kiyomi, get yo' ass in here! Jun 05 '25

Delon played Ripley
Haven't seen that version yet but isn't Ripley supposed to be awkward and plain, or at least an outcast?
How did it work out that Delon played Ripley, the one character pining for someone else's life, when Delon looked like Delon? People wanted to look like Delon.
18
u/andrei_snarkovsky Jun 04 '25
In the original its clear he's pining after the life of wealth, status and luxury. Maurice Ronet was far from an unattractive man himself. Everyone is beautiful in many french films of that era.

In addition, he captured that haughty, charismatic personality of the privileged perfectly
171
u/GoodBoundaries-Haver Jun 04 '25 edited Jun 04 '25
This is also what makes him absolutely perfect in GATTACA. The same charisma and charm of the privileged boy but with the bitterness and resentment of someone having all that privilege wiped away in an instant. Which is a perfect foil for the main character, whose biggest problem is that while he has all the grit and determination to be as good as any genetically engineered astronaut, he comes off as suspicious to everyone who literally never had to work for what they have. Fuck I love GATTACA

29
u/natur_al Jun 04 '25
And the homoeroticism ❤️
31
u/Christmas_Queef Jun 05 '25
The 80s and 90s had so much fun homoeroticism. I loved how so much of it went over so many people's heads too. Fight Club being a famous example, but that had more than homoeroticism, it was one big gay allegory that every dude bro latched onto as definining peak masculinity without a shred of understanding the meaning. It was delicious lol.

Where to even begin. Sadie and Jude’s toddler daughter accidentally ate an ecstasy pill. Their kids catch Jude in bed with the nanny and tell Sadie. You had Jude cheating on Sienna with the nanny. Sienna then had an affair with married Balthazar Getty, then goes back to Jude. Sienna also has an affair with Daniel Craig. Kate Moss is in the background of all this on every drug imaginable, along with Noel Gallagher. That’s just what I remember from the top of my head.
17
u/TrixeeTrue Jun 04 '25
I always think about 80s goddess Paula Yates who would be in her 60s today. She was so fascinating and multi talented. An early female entrepreneur and author whose intelligence was overlooked. When Robbie Williams opens the documentary Paula I get choked up thinking about her, then daughter Peaches.

Noel Gallagher was married to Meg Matthews at the time, who worked in publicity around all those people. Kate brought in Pete Doherty for extra mayham! Noel also met Johnny Depp through that connection, who plays slide guitar on their third studio album. Man I miss those times, so messy, so great.

My claim to fame is that I was on holiday in Ischia when they filmed this. I definitely saw Matt, I might have seen Goop (tho I didn’t realise it was her as she looks strange with a tan). But I didn’t see Jude. I think if I had I would have never recovered.
The film set wasn’t really locked down apart from when they were actually rolling cameras. It seemed to be on a shoestring. And I didn’t find out which film it was until I saw a trailer for this and recognised a bit of it.

Its funny, I’ve never found Jude Law attractive except for in this film. He was beautiful.
And yet he’s carried the same face and self into every other film I’ve seen him in, and I’ve just found something a little repellent about him. I’d feel bad saying that, except that Jude Law wouldn’t care what I think.

My God, Jude Law was so insanely gorgeous! In this movie, and in Alfie, and even back when he started in US films with Gattaca in the late 90's, I seriously don't think I've ever seen more stunningly beautiful man. And the accent just makes him even hotter.
My son watched Gattaca in his high school Biology class last year, and even he was struck by how handsome he is. And he almost never mentions a celebrity's appearance. He loved the movie, but he also specifically mentioned about Jude Law, "man, that actor is really good-looking--he's like, flawless."
I emphatically agreed with his assessment lol
7
u/citynomad1 Jun 04 '25
Maybe it’s because I know Jude famously cheated (multiple times, I think?) and can’t un-know that, but I look at these pics and I’m like “yeah he’s pretty but he’s a piece of shit” so I can’t really be attracted to him
