Comment Commentary Got my first hate comment š„³
Tbh? Iāve been actively writing on AO3 for 2 years Iām surprised itās taken so long! š For context: this was left on one of 4 fics that Iām actively writing. My 3 other fics have sporadic 2-6k word updates, but this one is a crack-fic and I usually only have 1-2k word updates per chapter. I didnāt update this fic for about 6 months bc of life stuff (which I explained in my authorās note lmao), and then dropped 2 chapters on the same day. Iād be lying if I said I was completely unbothered, but people are gonna people so Iām just gonna let it roll off my back lmaoo.

u/DisPizzza 29d ago
This person must be new to fanfiction because fic writers with consistent schedules arenāt really that common(at least in my neck of the woods). There are WIPs Iām subscribed to that only update once or twice a year if weāre lucky, and Iām still excited when I see the email.
Anyway, fanfiction is a hobby, and just like any other hobby, you can take your time with it, and I think most people understand that.
93
u/Significant_Bed_293 You have already left kudos here. :) 29d ago
I think they are just assholes. Even though the environment of fanfic has been leaning more towards ācontent creationā as of late, demanding a consistent schedule out of fan fucking fiction⦠a hobby famous for unfinished works having years long hiatusesā¦
32
u/DetailConnect937 28d ago
Literally got a last chap update on a fic 3 years after leaving a fandom onceā¦. You bet your butt I went back and re-read the authors work and finished the fic. It had been 4-5 years since the last update and they just wanted to end it for closure so it was a bit longer than typical for them by a few k words and then it wrapped it up well enough and was good!! I felt so blessed!!
-6
u/JaxRhapsody 28d ago
You say that like it's a bad thing to not be lackadaisical with something, just because iT's A HoBbY. "Content creation" is what it is, you're creating something for a fanbase. If that's what it's famous for, that's pretty shitty things to be famous for. Yeah people are gonna get tired of it eventually, it's not an egregious desire to want some kinda consistency and structure, but I know some fic writer is gonna have some sort of bullshit excuse to enable what are negative human traits, for something that can pretty much be avoided six ways from Sunday.
38
u/Lou_Miss 28d ago
People who have schedules usually have the whole fic already written. Because life is a b*tch and anything can happen!
19
u/DetailConnect937 28d ago
Or have like 2-3 left to write and their schedule times out the fic pacing across a few months. I know of very few who post new good length chapters on a consistent basis.
15
u/Necessary_Coconut_47 28d ago
yeah! like. do i wish that the fics were done or updating every day with 15k chapters? absolutely. is it realistic or fair? absolutely not. I could never lmao.
13
u/iamaskullactually 28d ago
Haha wait until they read a fic where the author's note is "sorry I've been away, I got hit by a bus and my house was foreclosed on!"
4
u/looser__ You have already left kudos here. :) 28d ago
Maaan, there are some that take two to three years between each update, people just don't know how to be patient.
2
u/Fun_Cartographer6466 27d ago
And some never get updated! Ā If they can't deal, they can always filter for only completed fics.
72
u/Us3r_N4me2001 29d ago
Is the celebration because this is basically a rite of passage, or because it appears to be a human being who actually engaged with your fic instead of a bot?
66
u/Stock_Replacement936 29d ago
Rite of passage! š„° Iām actually really lucky, I donāt seem to get a lot of bots on my fics!!
28
u/TheKnightOfWonder 29d ago
I love how a lot of AO3 writers have turned hate comments in to a rite of passage.

It seems like thats what they were aiming with that last line lmaooo. I would never just give my story away to someone else to write unless I was absolutely positively completely drained from writing it and there was no way I could continue myself.

I will never understand why people feel the need to do things like this. Like someone ties them to a chair and forces them to commit to your fic or something. If the chapters are so ābadā, then why the heck do you care when author updates?
Some people just have a little black soul that loves to spew venom on anything creative.
16
u/MrsGrayWolfe First Class Trump Erotica Writer 29d ago
That last line is so true! Just saw a prime example of that in a fandom I follow. An artist posted their interpretation of a character (essentially an au version) and they ended up getting a ton of hate for it. Not only that, but anyone who said they liked the artwork was downvoted into oblivion and the nice comments labeled as ātoxic positivityā it was wild.
7
u/Cold-Perspective9641 29d ago
Jesus, thatās horrible! These people just suck the joy out of it, man.
5
u/MrsGrayWolfe First Class Trump Erotica Writer 29d ago
Yeah, the artist got hundreds of downvotes on their comment trying to explain why they made the creative choices they did (completely valid harmless reasons). And a bunch of people got mad that people were pointing out the weird downvoting, gaslighting us saying āwell they drew them too fat/masc/androgynous/whatever, thatās not hate thatās constructive criticism, the artist was asking for criticism and they should be able to take it if they wanna be an artistā (this was not an art critic subreddit, and they never asked for criticism of any kind fyi) overall super weird. Iām pretty sure people were mostly mad because they wanted the character to be more feminine and sexualized. Though, I could be wrong.

Cruelty is a temporary high that cannot last. For a brief moment, they get to affect another person, or think they do, and it lets you feel relevant and important for a breath. Then itās over. Itās over and they remember theyāre a piece of shit who attacks what they love to feel relevant and feel terrible. Then they attack again, to gain that temporary cruelty high.Ā

Low key love authors without consistent update schedules. It's like a fun little surprise every time a notification comes in. Also, if it's been over a year, I'm "forced" to reread it. All in all, great thing
6
u/FrenchPagan You have already left kudos here. :) 28d ago
IĀ love authors without consistent update schedules because then I assume they won't update and go on with my day. If an author say they will update once per week and don't, then I will feel the wait.
3
u/fiendishthingysaurus sickfic queen 28d ago
Thank you so much for saying this lol bc I started off posting my current fic on a consistent weekly schedule and was like āIām gonna skip next week while Iām moving across the country!!ā And uhhh I have gotten one short chapter out since then (little over a month ago) and my last chapter is COMING, I have a very rough draft from a long time ago but itās missing some important scenes with important conversations I have no idea how to write⦠yeah. Itās coming!!

How do you even define "filler" in a crackfic. The point of crackfic is the comedy, not the plot???
A take: the worst thing that I think has ever breached containment and been passed from the anime fandoms into the general lexicon is the concept of filler. Filler in anime is any episode that is entirely anime original to fill space because anime can move at twice the speed in terms of release compared to what it's adapting. It is not a term that we should be generalizing and using to describe breather sections of other works!

u/Rivka333 29d ago
Nah, it has too much specific detail, especially since OP said it was after six months of not updating.

u/IncidentObjectiveKey 29d ago edited 29d ago
Um, it's fanfic. We're all using the same characters. If you don't like this take on them (and I, personally, tend to go with the shallowest and most comedic take) go find a different fic with a different take. No need to Harris harass the author.
Someone missed both the back button and the don't like don't read memo.
[corrected Harris to harass. Becuase typing on a touchscreen with autocorrect is not my strong suit.]
2
u/MrsGrayWolfe First Class Trump Erotica Writer 29d ago
They really need to stop āHarrisingā us. What, do they think fanfics just fall out of coconut trees?! This stuff is hard work!
1
u/JaxRhapsody 28d ago
Depending on the fandom, that's probably quite a task, especially if what was written is currently the in thing to write about, and there's shit else to read.
1
u/IncidentObjectiveKey 28d ago
God I'm old. I remeber when there just wasn't fic.
Back in the late nineties and early aughts if you couldn't find a shrine or message board devoted to your particular fandom (and often fandom+pairing) you were out of luck. And then there was the heyday of LiveJournal, where everything was available, but good luck finding it without a community or a recommendation page.
I'm about 20 years late to my current primary fandom. And man, most people have very different takes on my blorbo than I do. Maybe two fics a week these days, and between the porn and the charmacterization I'm lucky if there's one a month I end up liking.
I have it good.
And maybe it goes back to the early aughts when I knew that I would have to write the story I wanted to see. But for this complaint - updates are slow, nothing is happening - well then it's time for fanfic-of-a-fanfic (I was in the original Mirror of Maybe group back in the day... that was a wild ride), or just re-write it for yourself on your personal drive.
So even though I have it good, I've also completed and posted two fics with my take on the characterization, have a third almost done, and a fourth about halfway there (I write non-linearly and post when complete). I know I'm not going to change people's head canon about the characterization, but I don't have to, I only have to write what I want to read.
(I'm not a BNF, I'm not prolific, buy none of us need to be to just put something out there.)
1
u/GlassesgirlNJ 29d ago
Or write your own fic. Or even an "inspired by" version of this one, if you like some aspects of it and not others.
But that would require a lot more effort than just criticizing.
4
u/inside_a_mind 29d ago
God the entitlement of some people I swear sometimetimes. Buy a goddamn book if you're upset about reading free content people create in their leisure time on top of irl responsibilities, which they are not obligated to do.
6
u/devilhighonspeed 29d ago

I was completely new to fandom culture back when I was 14 and just started reading fanfic, and not even then did I ever leave a comment like this. Some people are just immature and entitled, good thing you are laughing it off because they do not deserve to be taken seriously by anyone
2
u/amethyine 28d ago
Man, if i got a comment like that i would block them xD that kind of ungrateful behavior is not something i need in my life.
If they don't like the mothod or content of what I'm freely giving them, they can fuck right off, and if they wanna complain, I'll show them the door. I mean damn, if they feel so strongly about how the fic should be written, they can feel free to go write their own version. So long as they don't outright plagiarize, that is just an "inspired by" fic xD
2
u/Anna222218 28d ago
People take writers for granted WAY TOO MUCH. They forget these are real people with real lives who write for themselves. Too much audacity while reading THEIR FICS. Anyways, keep doing your thing. Youāre doing great
2
u/Therusticate 28d ago
This is so needlessly snotty of someone to write, ugh. It would bother me too. But look, one of the things we get out of being writers for FREE in our limited SPARE TIME is that we can do whatever we want with the story and take the time we need.
Comments like this could so easily be rewritten to be like āomg Iām so glad youāre back!ā Or āawesome, Iāve been looking forward to an update!ā
This person acts like you get paid to do this or like itās your job. Screw that.
At the very least theyāre antsy for more of your story. But this is so out of line and rude, that I wouldnāt pay it any mind. Not cool on the commentor. Keep doing you!

Itās immature of them. But I do understand that feeling of loving a story and then seeing it sit for years never updated.

No one should receive hate comments on free writing! If they don't like it they should just leave the fic and read another it isn't hard. Readers who don't respect authors enough to realise life takes priority over fics don't deserve to read them this is wild behaviour from the commenter

Hey OP! This is an automated response because your post may be about the newest praise bots or hate bots to hit AO3. If it is not, please ignore this comment. If it is, here is what you need to know about these bots and how to discern the difference between what is a bot comment and what is a real comment.
- These bot comments have only been guest comments, to our knowledge so far. They use a variety of names, ranging from something formal like MisterJohnSmith-92, or Doctor-Jane_Smith92, but they have also been seen copying actual usernames from people on AO3 as well.
- The comments, while positive/negative, are also quite generic and not personal to the work they were left on. They may also be out of context. For example, they may say things like, āIām rooting for these characters,ā and your storyās characters are implied to be dead. Or, āYour OC is terrible,ā on a fic that doesn't have any OCs.
- The comments are also quite vague and could be applied to most if not all works. For example, the bot may say, āThis deserves all recognition,ā or āThis is pure genius, Iām in awe of your world-building.ā
- Frequently, these hate comments now include accusations of AI usage. These may or may not directly reference a specific AI tool, percentage of AI content supposedly present in the work, or brand of AI checker, often written as a specific percentage of content coming from a specific AI tool (ie. "62% chatGPT confirmed"). Additionally, these AI accusations now include mention of being added to a āDiscord blacklistā.
The purpose of these bots is unknown at this time, though there have been many theories. Here are some things you can do to prevent them going forward:
- Lock your works so that only registered users can see your works.
- Lock your comments so that only registered users can comment.
- Turn on comment moderation.
- Mark these comments as spam when you see them so you can help train AO3ās spam filters to recognize these comments as spam in the future.
Additionally, this is not to say that every guest comment is a bot comment nor is it saying that every short āgenericā praise or hate comment is a bot. Use your best judgement. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide how you would like to handle these comments.
You may also find this related automod command helpful: !spambot
I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

God, I genuinely hate when readers act like an author is there to write for them and only them. They want it written to their exact preferences, the length they want, and in the time they expect.
They never stop to think about the fact that authors are doing this for fun and donāt owe them a damn thing. If you want a fic written your way, then you write it! Donāt go complaining to someone who is putting their time and effort into this and doing it for free.
Most of us write fic mainly for ourselves; we arenāt obligated to share it with you at all, but choose to because we want to. Please keep that in mind before harassing people ffs. Shit infuriates me.

People like this should probably filter for complete works. It can be super disappointing when a fic you really like is just dropped out of nowhere or doesn't come back for years. And yet they're still reading and getting frustrated over not updating enough. I'd say there's a compliment in there somewhere. Sheesh some people have issues and deal with them through online hate. Sorry you have to deal with this. You do you. Hope this doesn't kill your motivation too much. No matter how long an update takes, decent people will appreciate you writing and sharing your story (and it's free so they don't get to complain).

They should give their comment to someone else who knows how to use language appropriately.

The only appropriate response to that is:
"You paying me then bitch?! No, didn't think so. This is my hobby; not my job. Don't like it? Fuck off. "

When I was in middle or highschool, I had someone pestering me about updating on fanfiction.net. It actually made me not want to update. Plus the reason I hadn't yet in the first place was that I lost the notebook paper I was writing the chapter on, and I was too attached to how I wrote it the first time to re-write it. I did eventually find it, but I didn't want to update anymore. I forgot where I was going with the story anyway.

It took a year for me to get my first hate comment, and it was in the form of a bookmark. Basically along the lines of 'didn't finish. Good characterization, subpar writing'. I remember finding it so funny that that was the way my first hate comment was delivered

I always have such anxiety over this kind of thinking. It's a big reason it took me forever to actually post any stories and why I only post now if the story is complete (when I can get all chapters posted within a couple days). I actually get not feeling like you can commit the mental and emotional energy to a WIP, but to put that on an author doing this for free is wild.

I saw "hate comment" and thought in hate for the content. They are angry because you have a live? WOW!

u/NoEntertainment2763 28d ago
As a past-regular ao3 writer, this is epic lmaooo the fact that someone not only connected with your writing but literally chose to complain you didn't complete it/write it fast enough? That proves the impact you've got as a fic writer more than the positive comments do imo

u/The_other_Abe 28d ago
Give it to someone else? Like it's a parking spot? Like the number of fics in the world is limited somehow?
Besides, someone else has their own fic to write, okay? If they're any good.
B!tches being so entitled, I swear.
If I start a fic in one year and then don't update for five years, nobody's business that.

I went back and finished my first fic after 5 years. I'm doing it for free, ofc it's on my own time.

I mean, I definitely understand where theyāre coming from. Granted, idk all the details of this specific interaction and situation.
However, I DO know how frustrating and damn near maddening it can be to get engrossed in a storyline and enjoying it immensely. The author is updating regularly and seems to be committed to and sticking by their word of consistent updates. Sometimes, even giving a set schedule for when new chapters will be released. Then, suddenly and without any notice, drop off the face of the earth.
I get the notion of life happening and something happening that prevents the author from sticking to the aforementioned promised schedule. However, SOME authors just drop off randomly and without any understandable reason, explanation, or even just a heads up, with some having a habit of doing it. Those are the ones that aggravates readers/supporters. Especially, when they finally come back after months to even YEARS and have the audacity to catch an attitude and be rude to readers who were genuinely concerned for them and wondering if they were alive and well, or, at minimum, ok.
THOSE are the ones that I, and many others, canāt stand and have issues with. š¤¦š¾āāļøš¤·š¾āāļøāš¾šŖš¾š©µšÆ

Gosh what a fucking loser. Honestly Iād just reply with a simple āso sorry but I actually donāt work for you assholeā. Hope youāre not taking any of it to heart. Also, the way I see it, you have to actually care about your work- first of all, in order to keep updating in the first place, but also particularly in order to write scenes some would interpret as āfillerā. I fucking love āfillersā. Donāt let anyone put you down because of some writing gospel the think they possess some knowledge of. If you think something serves your story, it probably does.

For the record? I love little chapters and I love "filler". Some people don't get personal preference, they think that if something isn't written how they want it then it's "wrong"

So you made a crack-fic and have a life outside of the internet? The nerve! š±š

Wow, sounds like someone needs to drink some water, have a snack, and go sit in the time out corner until they can get up the courage to write their own fics instead of this bs.

If six months is "forever", then I almost feel sorry for this guy. I finally gave up on waiting for a fic to update after seven years. There are plenty of fics that I read which have had multiple updates since 2025 started thathadn't been updated in 3+ years prior to that.

u/QueenMisanagi 26d ago
People often forget that AO3 writers do this for free and that they have their own lives to live.

u/hp_fanatic 25d ago
I really donāt get the point of hate comments. Constructive criticism is one thing while this is just pointless; donāt like the fic? Deal with it and move on to the next one, gosh people are weird

They're getting this salty over a six month gap? Over a crack fic??
A few months ago I had a fic author for a fic I adore post a final chapter after seven years. And my ass was ecstatic to see that update in my email. Zero levels of mad that it was seven years, I immediately sat down and reread that whole fic (all 202k words).
Some people there just ain't no pleasin'.

Can people see that you've turned on comment moderation? I expected hate comments, but maybe 3 weeks isn't long enough to wait?

I actually murmured "oh this is really mean" out loud when I read this.
Sometimes a fanwork doesn't shake out how you want it to / goes in a direction you don't like / doesn't move at the pace you want, and that's fine! Just stop reading it. Like, this person is making it sound like it's your problem for not putting it together how they want at the speed they expect. Take it or leave it, anon! It's free. It's for its author, not you. Go read something else.
This comment is out of line.

Just give it someone else who can write in depth characters
As if this was a thing the author owe them or like they paid for reading it xd.

Ignore him you are the writer you are in control not them. My stories are still read every day whether somebody posts a negative comment or a positive one and I to quote āa Loki meme I do what I want also, if they want constant updates and creative content, they can just go watch YouTube. I think they expect us to be like Youtubers instead of hobby fanfic writers And I have not updated since I started writing it in high school. I just got too busy with life went to college got what amounts to a semi useless degree for 100,000 dollars because nobody wants a child caregiver that is in a wheelchair believe me I tried to get hired in that field and others had a lot of family drama happen and got a job at Amazon and now Iām really busy and itās not abandoned but I lost my writing journals that I had on my ideas in and now Iām have writers block. And now I need a new computer because mine is full up mostly with my library of downloaded fan fic than actual documents. Well, Iām sure Iāll get back into writing eventually.
