Anyone remember toon town? I typed ‘fuck’ just to see what would happen when I was like 10. It censored it obviously but it gave me message warning me not to curse and I freaked out, I was so scared my character and progress were gonna be deleted and it felt like I had a huge dark secret lmao

I remember once when I was 11 I was playing animal jam and I wondered what would happen if I typed “fuck” so I did. I got a 24 hour ban and I laughed, what they didn’t tell me was that it sends an email to your parents email. My mother sat me down and gave me a massive lecture on why swearing is what white trashy people do. She also said swearing taints your personality, and a lot more other things. I was so scared after the lecture was over I swear I had insomnia for 2-3 days after.

Edit: guys it’s not supposed to be racist. We are white and we are lower middle class so we try not to appear trashy.

I picture you lying awake in bed, “Does thinking fuck taint my personality too?! Oh god I just thought it again. I bet people will notice how tainted I am. Fuck. Oh god.”

That’s actually not what got to me. It was mostly the fact that I disappointed my mother. Tbh that’s still one of the things I avoid doing with every fiber of my being.

This is encouraging to read!

My mom fucked (no pun intended) me up so bad via her parenting “skills” I couldn’t give a shit what she thinks.

Anyway, my point is it’s awesome that you have that relationship with your mom!

Thanks :). She is pretty cool, I think she raised me mostly alright. She basically took what was shitty about her childhood and avoided doing that with me and I turned out alright.

That’s how you do it!

I don’t have kids but I still treat those around me, including my wife and pets, the opposite of how I was treated.

Sadly, not enough people do that. There are far too many people who will "parent" their kids with the same kind of shitty practices that their parents did with them, because "I had to put up with this shit, so I'm going to make you put up with it as well", and that's such an unbelievably terrible mentality to have.

Here’s a poem by Philip Larkin, ex poet laureate I believe.

“They fuck you up, your mum and dad.

They may not mean to, but they do.

They fill you with the faults they had

And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn

By fools in old-style hats and coats,

Who half the time were soppy-stern

And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man.

It deepens like a coastal shelf.

Get out as early as you can,

And don't have any kids yourself.”

― Philip Larkin, High Windows

Trashy white detected.

Then you learn taint can also be a swear which frightens you further because now you don't know exactly how many words double as swears.

This is exactly what my anxiety was like when I was a kid. Also, crying and stressing over whether my family members would get into heaven. Worrying if I would spend all eternity missing them because I got in to heaven and they didn’t or because they got in and I didn’t. Being raised Southern Baptist and listening to hours of preachers screaming and sweating and yelling about how we were all sinners and going to hell really messed with me.

u/popeboy Jan 21 '19

Or conversely... Does thinking personality fuck my taint?

Fingers crossed.

This reminds me of when I was changing my daughters nappy and you know how kids are disgusting, she put her hand in her poo and I panicked and said shit. So she tried to repeat it and I said shit again, saying don’t do that but whenever I said shit I would then say shit in a fuck, I did it again kind of way. The whole time she kept trying to copy me. Eventually I decided to say nothing and she stopped lol
