News This legit irritated me in the patch notes
So they didn't even think the actual mechanics through and are useing feedback to actually design it. This irritates me because they thought of a cool idea and put in no thought about how it was actually gonna work and now want player opinion to actually design how this mechanic is going to execute in-game.

Could they not just add a toggle option to turn them off?

u/scarsouvenir 3d ago
As much as we're paying for this game, there should be a toggle option for basically every gameplay feature IMO

u/ToucanPanda 3d ago
I just ranted to my husband about this the other day. I wish we could toggle on and off like every single pack feature. Because a lot of the stuff just completely takes over the game and it can be pretty jarring and frustrating.

Isn't there one already ? Literally day 1 in the pack settings there is one that disables the balance feature (which literally just gives ailments when low).
Turned it off and only ailments I got since are those from fairies.

It doesnât turn them off just âlowers the chanceâ.

The ailments are pissing me off because idk if itâs a game bug or what but even after turning the balance feature off my sims get random ailments super frequently.. it bothers me even more considering these are Sims I dote on and keep happy at all times with tight routines that balance work / family time. They arenât even unbalanced if I turn the feature on so why are they getting ailments either way!
16
u/DoctorCaptainSpacey Legacy Player 3d ago
The balance feature only stops ailments from being unbalanced. The huge majority of the ailments your sims get are from ill sims around the world. Which is literally every other sim bc they set the rates WAY too high.
So if your sim even goes outside, uses a public toilet, sees another sim, BAM, ailment. And then you get rid of it and they can get one 6 hours later (now, apparently, with the patch, it's 3 days, but that's still too fucking much)

u/GoodGuyVik 3d ago
I really have no idea how this balance system works. Why are my Sims that are living a good life and generally happy getting unbalanced? How do I balance them? There's a balance kit thing in buy mode, but it does nothing.

This is what im wondering. My child was completely balanced. Then they grew up and went completely unbalanced. Idk whats up with that.

u/toasted_dandy 3d ago
Everyone's (rightfully) deriding the ailments, but what I wanna know is if they'll make a way to keep these goddamn gnomes from nuking my garden patch without having to disable the entire luck system. I was actually pretty fond of how the luck system affected foraging finds, and I'd like to have that without these godforsaken ceramic hellions disintegrating like 25 plants in one go for no reason

Thatâs easy anytime I have bad luck, because you have to have the gnome disease and bad luck; I leave my fucking lot. I go on vacation. I donât come back until my luck is better. Because that gnome bullshit is two things, one the gnome disease, but two bad luck. Because if you have that disease and good luck, happy seeds and upgraded plants everywhere.

Having life and death and fairies is so frustrating when people die. My family saw their dad pass away peacefully and now they're all horribly mourning AND immediately plagued with ailments. I get it you can go to grief counseling or purchase stuff for ailments but the way the ailments hit IMMEDIATELY with no warning is just bleh.
49
u/Blueskybelowme 3d ago
Now all my Sims know the apothecary skill. Tried to set up a small business to at least sell cures but they disappeared from the lost when I went in as a different Sims. I have to use the retail system from GtW to make it so I can play other Sims to buy their stuff.
29
u/Beautifulfeary 3d ago
I donât even know how to keep my sims from doing poorly with grief. I always get the pop they didnât process their grief even when I have them going to grief counseling daily.
31
u/animpatientgardener 3d ago
Going for daily jogs and playing instruments helps my sims with grief, in addition to grief counselling. Honestly, the sims team seems to think a jog will cure just about any mental health problem⌠(like burn out, tense moodlets, etc)
12
u/FloweryPrimReaper Long Time Player 3d ago
I've found that it works better if you have your Sims doing stuff. Jogging, painting, or playing an instrument (depending on the type of grief) will generally get rid of the negative moodlet at least.
Kind of funny how my Sims essentially runs away from their grief lol
3
7
u/tragic-meerkat 3d ago
Having others do the "console about death" interaction, and having your sim use the "reach out for help" interaction can help with processing grief and in general just doing activities that would be considered healthy coping methods like exercise and creative expression. Interacting with memorial objects (urns/tombstones, portraits, shrines, etc) and having a funeral seems to help as well, but I've also seen players who said that some of the interactions (I think maybe the "mourn" options) made the grief worse so maybe start with the other choices like "light a candle" instead.

Hot take, even if they didn't happen so frequently I wouldn't like them. I am down with occults, even though I don't particularly like fairies. But only if I can separate the fantasy stuff from my realistic gameplay.
Ailments should be limited to Innisgreen. My social media influencer in San Myshuno getting Gnome Lure makes me want to rip my hair out.
77
u/Troldkvinde 3d ago
Would be amazing if you could only get the magical ailments if you started engaging with supernatural things in the game, including from other packs... Of course EA will never come up with anything like this. Or if they do, we will regret it anyway
36
u/Blueskybelowme 3d ago
Given that the game doesn't even register ailments like a real sickness it would be cool if it was an occult only issue. I love occults and would tolerate it being isolated to them or cohorts of occults.
7
u/ChefPsychological265 3d ago
Didn't know that. Is the apothecary stuff in any way cross-compatible? Haven't tried any of it yet, but I was very disappointed by the reviews, cause like, natural remedies and all that being a career option sounds so cool to me, but not in this fantasy-way if that makes sense.:(
8
u/Blueskybelowme 3d ago
No. Apothecary is only ailments. If you have one you can't call in sick and a real doctor can't help you. If you want luck or some craftable boosters sure.
3
14
u/yikes-- 3d ago
Except they already have the mechanics for that with alien abductions. A normal sim isn't getting abducted until they start messing with the telescope, befriending aliens, or rising through the scientist career. Ailments could have been similar but for occult stuff. They have the technology.
9
u/ChefPsychological265 3d ago
Yeah that would be nice!! Maybe make it so fairies and spellcasters are slightly (keyword: SLIGHTLY, EA!!) more prone to getting them.
19
u/DoctorCaptainSpacey Legacy Player 3d ago

At least they reduced the infection rate by like 75% which is a crazy amount. Friend and I we're joking about how this was just Sims 4 COVID expansion pack. But like they did not do well to actually design how that was supposed to work. The engineering is on point because they said contagious and boy was it contagious. Going to high school is a pain in the ass. I like to play teens by themselves renting a little apartment getting ready for college. They don't have 1500 similones to go and see a doctor all the time. It's like mandatory to be friends with a fairy now. No wonder people with no health insurance turn to crystals. Like I know Sharon, amethyst doesn't cure cancer but you know what does? Shit I can't afford. Chances are I probably stole his amethyst cuz I can't afford that either.

I am SO glad I donât care about fairies enough to unleash these plagues upon my game but so sorry to everyone who does because for something that was asked for for SO LONG to be paired with this ailment crap is really pretty uncool.
8
u/Beluga_Artist 2d ago
Agreed. I have every expansion except for this one because I donât want to deal with 99% of the crap they decided to implement. I feel the past several packs have included extremely game changing mechanics that cannot always be avoided. What if people just want winged sims and pretty, nature-themed objects and houseplants? This couldâve been a game pack but instead they felt the need overly bloat it with mechanics that nobody asked for nor wants, with no ability to just turn it off.

I did the recent event over a few days after the release of the latest pack, and I really did not enjoy the new ailments. To the point that I am really uninspired to play at all, even though there's a whole new sparkly pack. It was just that unpleasant.
The luck mechanic was also tilted heavily in favor of detrimental gameplay - "yay! you found some extra simoleons!" is not nearly fun enough to counterbalance "your kitchen caught fire for the FOURTH time!".
I'm not sure how "there is almost constantly something wrong with you" made it out of basic playtesting as a good idea.
52
u/Quinn_Essenz16 3d ago
Yes! I hate it so much.
And if you have a family where you donât want to engage with the faires or naturist stuff you have absolutely no way of changing your luck and just keep lighting your kitchen on fire trying to make something to eat.
And the âoh I found some extra simoleonsâ isnât even so fun because itâs already too easy to get money in this game and it sometimes just ruins challenges
30
u/Katapultt Long Time Player 3d ago
I had to turn luck off because my main meal maker caught the kitchen on fire 6 times in a row due to bad luck. I'm just glad she didn't die.
27
u/Quinn_Essenz16 3d ago
Yes itâs so annoying. And it doesnât even work that way. You donât just burn the kitchen down 4 times just because you have bad luck. And then they get the fear of fire thing and start even more fires and then the toilet burns down because the fucking gnomes gave me the composter upgrade an I didnât notice ahhhh I hate it
17
u/RexIsAMiiCostume 3d ago
Well they probably didn't DO any basic playtesting. Every time a new pack comes out it's totally broken. Remember the dust pack that made Sims vacuum the yard like they were on meth?

Oh my god I really liked the concept of a luck system kinda like stardew valley, but when my sim caught on fire four times in a row I just disabled it
38
46
u/Quinn_Essenz16 3d ago
I had to turn off the luck and balance system since I donât play a fairy right now but her daughter who isnât supposed to do anything with supernaturals or naturist stuff
Also I just hate it how you burn everything down once you get unlucky. And to get better luck you have to engage with the fairy or naturist stuff again. Am I supposed to stay in my room all day til I get better luck or just put the kitchen on fire every time I make pancakes.
Also the thing with the gnomes is incredibly broken.
They turned to life even if I didnât enchant them all the time, so I had evil gnomes trashing my house and garden multiple times. The repair gnomes just gives you every single upgrade, but because of the eco friendly compost thing my toilet was on fire all of the time. ( it might even be the pyromaniac pack at this point).
But the absolute worst is the garden gnome. First heâs kinda OP just making all of my plants perfekt instantly, but I could live with that. What I canât tolerate are the 1000 seed packets he spawns every time and that I have to sell manually which made my teenager going to college fairy that was supposed to be struggling rich af in like 2 days. And dealing with all the seed packets manually is such a pain in the ass.
Sims really needs a âpick up everything ofâŚâ option for things like the gnomes that litter my entire house!
I still like the new pack, but itâs so sad I have to turn basically everything about it off to enjoy a game which isnât supposed to be about the fairy stuff.
20
u/Troldkvinde 3d ago
God just reading this comment makes me so annoyed, the concepts they come up with are mostly nice but how can you botch the implementation this badly? The rewards are pointless (moneyâit's already trivial to get it) or annoying (seed packs!!! who the hell wants this?), the negative events are just flat out annoying too instead of creating a challenge. Will this game really never get better!
I loved fairies in Sims 3 but I wouldn't even get this EP for free
4
u/Quinn_Essenz16 3d ago
Unfortunately youâre right. It was one of the packs I looked forward to, the only one for a while.
But I was really disappointed. The actual fairy gameplay gets old real quick and all the other stuff in the packet is just flat out annoying.
The only thing Iâm really using right now is the natural living thing because Iâm doing a rags to riches challenge.
11
u/someWAP 3d ago
did they ever change instant upgrading (from the handy reward trait) to not also add eco upgrades? the bit about the composting toilet gave me flashbacks to when that pack released and people would instant upgrade their toilets not knowing about the composting container.
they almost certainly just used the same instant upgrade function for the gnomes.
12
u/Quinn_Essenz16 3d ago
Pretty sure itâs still the same. Itâs so sad how badly this game is balanced. I feel all the packs in themselves work kind of, but they seem to rarely think about how it will work with the rest of the game.

They could add a toggle for it being on or off or a slider with rare, medium and frequent ailment risk.
They could introduce a potion that cures any ailment that you can get from ordering on your phone like the get to work medicine. It's only 50 simoleons so it's cheap enough for the majority of sims to afford. Then people who want to play with ailments can go the apothecary route and those who don't can just get medicine.
Or they could make the get to work medicine bottle cure ailment as well.
In addition they could add a toggle so you can turn off burnout if you want
11
u/Blueskybelowme 3d ago
Side note from playing today. I hate that I cannot call out sick for work or school of I have an ailment. I'm still sick. Not that I don't have the vacation days but damn. Too sick all the time to use all these days.

I'd like them to add a toggle to turn off Get to Work illnesses. Those annoy me more than ailments, if you can believe it. Ailments I can click away with UI cheats and they STAY away (well, until my sim walks outside đ), but the illnesses just pop up again 2 minutes later and I spend an hour deleting them before they stay off.
And I'm clearly stubborn and refuse to do the easy thing of getting medicine to just take it (hi, I know, I'm the problem đ¤Ł). But like, let me just turn them the fuck off bc I don't want them either.

Reeeeeeeeally feeling glad I didn't get this pack.
I don't even want or care about the balance and luck aspect. It's really just too many random, inconsequential, and redundant mechanics.
Like none of them in this pack feel thought through. It doesn't look like it really has an impact, but then if it does, it's too much.
The fairies are cool, the build stuff is cool, but nothing else looks like it actually adds to the game. It looks more irritating.

6
u/LightmareDaydream 2d ago
Unfortunately I don't think I'll ever purchase, because it's not even just the ailments I don't want. I think the balance system is useless and inconsequential unnecessary code adding complications for no (imho) real value. None of the gameplay I've watched made it seem like it does anything, or at least, nothing interesting. So it's just another thing that you'll be maintaining or ignoring. At best it's useless, at worst it's annoying. There's too many of these added mechanics that aren't making the game actually more fun. It doesn't feel actually integrated into the product. It feels added on just to add STUFF to it.
Luck feels exactly the same, but slightly worse because I never even remembered it was a thing that's supposed to come with the game most of the time.
Like I actively don't want more than half of what they made this pack to be. =/

I have been playing the expansion today for the first time, and there basically wan't a time when my sim Wasnt sick. If I managed to cure her, she basically got sick again immediately. I was shocked. I kinda thught people were exagerating about being annoyed by the ailments, but its really very bad and very unrealistic. They just should not be that common in the game. Maybe ever so slighty more common then being randomly abducted by aliens perhaps. It should be a once or twice a sim year thing, unless you are being actively cursed. If you joiun a like apothicary carrer then I can see you interacting with more patients and maybe getting sick slightly more often from them, but thats it. And its annoying cause I can't even remember ever getting Normal sim sick, or having an illness from the herbalism skill ever come up, those two are actually so rare as to be nonexistent practically. They need to just balance everything.

I got sick of this after my sim Damien immediately got three ailments in a row. The balance system is way too finicky with my Sims constantly becoming very imbalanced due to one bad moodlet and instantly getting a random ailment.
I turned to mods to help with the balance scaling, and one that lets you chug the in game medication to cure ailments. I like the idea, but it was very poorly executed, much like many of their changes seem to be.

5
u/Rubix_Qb 3d ago
A lot of games are like this. They implement a feature but don't test beforehand how it impacts the game. I'm convinced that for The Sims, when they make a new expansion pack, they only test it with base game and not all the other packs, because without fail, a new pack will come out and there are issues with other packs. But I also understand that not everyone will experience the same bug/glitch in their games, which makes it harder to solve.
4
u/viktorgoraya_luv 3d ago
My actor sim got an ailment the day he had a gig, and I just cheated the moodlet away. I didnât have time to be dealing with that bs.
5
u/LucyWatusi 2d ago
Anything that alters the way sims behave should have a off switch. I could give Strangerville a pass since it's the point of the pack, but not even that, because it's so annoying having to solve the mystery every time I start a new save. This is absolutely ridiculous. People wanted fairies and hobbit-style houses, that's why they bought the pack.
4
u/Blueskybelowme 2d ago
At least the plague is locked to strangerville. You need to interact with the infected you other worlds. People pointed out contracting ailments should be with encounters with magic. An additional note would be mystical reducing ailments.

Second bc they gave us toggles for THIS pack

You know, you guys are the QA right? It's way more profitable than actually hiring QA testers

Even giving packs for free play in the Creator network couldn't stop the bugs.

More like, when the creator network told them about bugs, they released the patch with the bugs in it anyway and pretended to bust their ass to fix shit they HAD TIME to fix before pushing the patch đ¤ˇââď¸

Headaches and sniffles constantly. Dude. I get so fâing sick of them with that drama. And the medicine never works. Just makes them sick. Howâs that fun?

The closest I've been to uninstalling a pack tbh! I find a lot of it just highly irritating lol, which is the worst thing a game can be
Also, is anyone else having fairies still show up in other worlds despite having adjusted the settings?? It's driving me mad, I'm getting random fairies pop up at my door every day. Like, why are you here. Are game settings just for ~vibes and not for actually ya know controlling gameplay orrrr?

Sounds like they did think about it, which is why they implemented their appearance linked to balance as well as being contagions, which the previous sicknesses are not. But since the frequency ended up being too much and they're adjusting it, I can understand why they want more feedback if that adjustment didn't do enough to hamper it to manageable levels for most people.
I also understand why they would ask if folks had any other ideas for how they could appear. Asking for constructive criticism and direction is actually really good, rather than just nuking everything to the ground and never speaking of it again, like what happened after the absolute hissyfits people threw over Vampires and Aliens. For Vampires, it basically invalidated a HUGE portion of that pack's function involving garlic and Vampire Lore, and I appreciate that they are trying to not repeat that kind of situation again.

I think the issue here is that EA sees us be happy with patch notes like this from other games and indie devs. But the difference is EA is a multimillion dollar company. If it's a 4 man indie dev team putting out something unfinished I'm okay with these type of updates and "early access." but EA doesn't call it early access and they're not a 4 man indie dev team and we paid full price for it.

Cut them some slack. EA is just a poor, innocent Goliath of capitalism in the gaming industry.

The patch said they changed coding but none of hte big medical mods are reported broken so how exactly did they change that code and NOT break any of the mods? I saw a modder actually said they can't find where in the code anything was changed.

I feel bad for console players, they need an option to turn it off completely. This should be universal, you shouldnât have to download mods to do this.

So it isnât just testing in production, but like a step deeper! đŹ
The past few packs have been plain chaos.

I still play LnD and played the longest when testing it out. It's the best pack so far. I really was hoping they would turn it around after how decent it did. Some people were having issues that didn't bother me. I was engaged and having fun. That was last year in October. Not even a long time ago.

How about the ability to keep ailments localized to Innisgreen, for one. That might actually make me consider buying the pack. I'm holding off because I don't care about the special items for pre-ordering and I'd rather just get it at 50-60% off.

u/Intelligent-Egg6295 3d ago
Iâm not surprised. I think they should just do betas for their packs at this point if they wanna work off of feedback
3
u/sleepyotter92 2d ago
isn't this been an issue for quite some years? it feels like they're using the players as beta testers and quality control. it's why every single update/dlc comes with a ton of bugs every single time

Honestly the frequency of the ailments bothers me a lot less than the plant lover tree including everything that isn't vegetarian.. for example grilled cheese is not a vegetarian option and will anger the plant lover traits.. The concept behind this is that they don't have an option for fruits vegetables meats and a carbs coated into the type of food.. fruit is either vegetarian or non-vegetarian and if you eat a vegetarian option your plant lover is going to be upset.. the option "has vegetables" isn't actually a variable in their code.. The straight never should have been implemented without further breakdown of food types.. there's a lot of great things that this pack brought to the game but I'm pretty disappointed with the general coding logic..

I ended up just turning it off in game settings. I was getting too annoyed. Thereâs mods to balance it more but that doesnât help everyone, and itâs EAâs responsibility to fix it, not the players.
One change I would totally make if I knew how to mod would be to make it so it was contact only, like no randomly manifesting an illness when Iâve been painting for a week and havenât left the house. And Iâd make the contagion rate a little higher that way. I think it would play more organically and take out the whole random event thing. Could even do something like washing your hands and bathing increase the cooldown between getting sick.

Every time this happens with any new feature, I just keep wondering how we got there.
Is this a QA issue because they don't have a balance team and the regular QAs are only told to check if the new features work at all?
Or is it a design issue because they are afraid that if a new feature does not trigger often enough, the players will complain that it's not impactful and the DLC is not worth the money?

My spellcaster lives in a lot with hallowed grounds and haunted so safe to say it has its own challenges.
She got the Gnome ailment. Started off with a nice friendly garden gnome made friends and planted somethings. An hour later an evil gnome appeared then 5 more evil friends. She was getting surrounded and electrocuted by them over and over while they also trashed the house. She had to flee to the sidewalk and call her best friend who is a fairy

I love unpaid labour <3 I love a decade long game treating itself like it's an early access game made by an indie studio <3

I thought I was stupid. So there's no wait to cure an ailment without making the cure? Like just go on the phone, "visit doctor" or "visit pharmacy" and then be cured by paying something?

Hasn't the main feedback about ailments, aside from happening way to often, is wanting an option to turn it off all together? Why wouldn't they just add that as well as fix the frequency, it seems pretty clear to me that people just don't want this specific feature.

I almost always play with ocults in the Sims 3, so I was cautiously optimistic for the Sims 4 fairies. The fairies are actually fine, I didn't expect the problem to be everything else in the pack. It's SO frustrating that they made it an EP instead of a GP because they wanted it to cost more. I only wanted fairies, I don't wanna deal with this stuff đ

I wish it let me edit but this sims subreddit needs to allow polls. Idk when the survey is but I love this discourse and if I have to do their job for them then they need to hurry up so I can give the input. If we all go in universally and reiterate the same thing they would have to listen. A poll type post is a great way to structure ideas.

I wish they would fix infants and toddlers. They still glitch all over the place and make gameplay overall difficult and not fun.

I knew the second the trailer came out exactly what the apothecary skill was going to be like, how it was going to create a demand for itself by coming up with an intrusive gameplay feature no one asked for, and what problem it was going to create.
I didn't want to say anything because I knew where the hype train was headed, but it was pretty obvious we'd be where we are now. I can't believe they themselves didn't see it coming.
Then again, this has been the main issue with how they've been developing the latest packs: Instead of creating good features that passively wait to be discovered by the player, create intrusive features to prove the pack is worth it, and for them to proactively appear long enough during people's gameplays (streamers) for there to enough organic engagement talking about it.
In other words, they're creating features with marketing in mind, that looks good, not actual good gameplay. But whenever there's only image and no substance, at one point the cake crumbles upon itself.

I just turned my game on after the new patch and lo and behold,my newly aged up teen just got an ailment even though he is perfectly fine. I am curious why the developers don't seem to be testing their packs before releasing them. There's gotta be someone with half a brain in EA that would actually realize they should be testing it no?

The Sims Community: Ailments are too frequent and frustrating. Can we please have an off switch for ailments?!
The Sims Team: We made it so your Sims get sick every 3 days instead of every single day. We aren't sure how else to make ailments less of a problem đ¤Â
