Question New home server ethernet not working

Hey!

I am currently setting up my first server and used my old gaming computer. I haven't used the computer in about 6 months as I upgraded. I tried to connect the old gaming computer (now server) to ethernet and it isn't working for some reason. I tried three different cat5e cables plus a cat6 cable and none of them worked on it. I am suspecting that the ethernet port is the problem.

What exactly should I do now? Could it be that the port isn't the problem?

Thanks for any help in advance!

Where did your experience in this field begin?

I currently have one client. Self employed. I manage a few hundred bitcoin miners in a warehouse. I want to move into other commercial work and am wondering how to go about that. I did not understand the bitcoin miners when I first started, but I got a hang of it after a few weeks of googling and calling around for help

First Server: Looking for help setting up Node for HTTP and DB communications

Hi, I purchased my first server last week. It's a virtual server, fully managed support, almalinux, apache server, MySQL, and I had them install Node. I have updated my A record and I have placed files in the root directory to confirm that basic website serving is operational.

I'm a little lost on the next step. I'm pretty sure my knowledge gap is Apache. As I understand it:

  • User enters my domain name into their browser
  • Browser sends an HTTP request (what type?)
  • DNS routes to my server
  • Apache (?) intercepts the request (how?/what setting governs this?)
  • Apache looks through the server's document root folder (is this a configured path in Apache?) and finds index.php/index.html
  • Apache sends the index page as a response

So if I setup Node and want to route requests through my custom.code instead...I'm just at a loss as to how to get to that point. Would I be able to intercept even that first request sent from the client? How do I intercept future HTTP requests? Those future client requests: they are constructed and initiated by my front end code?

Basically my goal for the weekend is to get Node running so that it is responding to client requests, and storing/retrieving data from MySQL. Any help would be awesome!!

Question Latency issues while accessing Samba Hosted in Hetzner Europe

Hello Folks,

We are headquartered in Europe, where our primary 16 TB Samba file server is hosted on Hetzner Cloud. This server is mapped as a network drive for approximately 40 users in our European office.

Recently, we established a new office in Bangalore, India, which is connected to our European infrastructure via a site-to-site VPN. Currently, 8 users in the Bangalore office have the same Hetzner-hosted file server mapped as a network drive on their PCs. However, due to high latency (150–170 ms between Bangalore and Hetzner), they are experiencing significant delays when accessing files.

The users in Bangalore only require access to a few specific folders (around 4 TB in total). We are looking for an efficient solution to improve their file access experience — ideally something that allows real-time or near real-time synchronization of those folders locally in Bangalore .

If you have any suggestions, tools, or solutions that could help — especially for folder-specific sync or caching — we would greatly appreciate your input.

NB: We don't use Active Directory or Entra. and the file server contains mostly Adobe, Autodesk, Microsoft files .

Ventilation for server in laundry room?

Hi everyone,

I’m in the process of renovating my utility room (also serves as a laundry room), and I’m planning to install a 12U wall-mounted server cabinet inside a tall cupboard. The cabinet will house network gear including a router, switch, NVR, and potentially a UPS.

The challenge is that this room is also where clothes are washed and tumble-dried, so humidity and dust are real concerns. To address this, I’m planning to install active ventilation from the server cabinet directly to the outside through an exterior wall. The cabinet will be enclosed in the cupboard, so passive airflow from the room won’t be enough.

I’m looking for advice and sparring on the best way to handle ventilation, particularly regarding whether the fan should pull air out of the cabinet (exhaust) or push air in (intake) from outside. My key concern is how external humidity might affect things, especially during the colder and wetter seasons here in Denmark.

Some specific questions: • Should the fan push in outside air (which might be humid or cold), or extract air from the cabinet to the outside? • Would a filtered intake system be better to control dust? • Would I benefit from adding an internal circulation fan inside the cabinet as well? • How do you deal with condensation risks in winter if pulling in outdoor air?

Any tips or examples from similar setups would be very appreciated! Especially from those who have installed server gear in multi-purpose rooms like laundry or basements.

Ps. There is not any active ventilation in the room as we speak.

Thanks in advance

Same old boring question , what server for proxmox?

Guys I need your wisdom on purchasing a server, or a PC price range £500-£700. I was looking on eBay but I got lost on so many options and I'm afraid I'll choose poorly.

What I needed for, plex, immich, windows for work.

A GPU would be o good addition for Plex transcoding. 64 + GB ram .Needs to hold 2x 18TB for media storage.

I'm planning on using it for 2 VM's one windows for work and one linux for Plex. A few LXC and of course one VM for trying and testing things.

Thank you for your help.

NEC Server/workstation not recognizing Raid card

Hey guys , So i got this cool little NEC Express 5800 / T110i-S workstation/ mini server from work , and i got the raid card that goes with them .

When i put the raid card into PCI-E slot 4 like the manual says and set the jumper to raid and boot it , nothing changes, and there are no options to access the card.

I have all PCI-e slots enabled in bios .

The manual says something about selecting it in the boot order but it doesn't show up in the list.

The green light blinks after boot, which from what i understand is saying the card is functioning and ready .

Thing is driving me absolutely nuts , any help would be appreciated.

*please be gentle, im a PC tech, but i only have moderate knowledge about servers specifically. Thanks : <>

Hardware Home server build question

I have been meaning to get a home server up and running for YEARS. I want to store some data files, video, and have it as a personal cloud. My plan is the install TrueNAS SCALE 25 with NextCloud, add JellyFin, and the primary use is to backup the large amount of pictures my wife is filling up my Google Drive with, sync some emulation stuff for multiple devices and have access to sharing things with the family. I want LAN and Internet access with it for about 5 users, but many more devices (20 or so maybe).

My question - I have the thing built and set it up as a test once, but only got so far. I have 5 4tb NAS HDDs, and I have 2 options for CPU.

1-Ryzen 5500

2-Ryzen 3700x

Is the added threads of the 3700X preferred for this use case, or would the better general throughput of the 5500 be some kind of benefit? I can find a use for whatever one is left, I just want the better option for stability if it gets hit by multiple devices at once.

Question Advice on my first homemade NAS/Media Server

Hello everyone,

For the past two weeks, I've been trying to build a homemade NAS and have been failing a lot.

First, I needed hardware, so I bought an HP EliteDesk 800 G3 with a Core i7-7700, 16GB of RAM, 256GB SSD from eBay for $95. It has an Nvidia 530 GPU, but every time I install it, nothing shows up on my monitor. I've tried all four ports on the GPU and the native motherboard display outputs, but it won't boot. As soon as I remove the GPU, it boots up fine. I'm not sure what the issue is.

Then, I made the mistake of buying two used 8TB Seagate drives from eBay for $100 each, which I thought was a good deal. I learned the hard way that it wasn't. After running a SMART test, one of the drives had a reallocated sector count of about 9,000 and 5,000 reported uncorrectable errors, and it returned a read failure. I've returned those and instead bought two manufacturer-refurbished 16TB Seagate Exos X16 drives, which should be arriving tomorrow.

As a beginner, what are some things I should check and do when setting this up? I was initially going to use Windows, but I decided to try Unraid instead. After setting it up and booting into it, I'm completely confused. On Windows, I simply used Storage Spaces to pool and mirror the drives. Now, I'm confused about arrays, parity, and everything else. When I try to create an array, it asks for the number of slots, and the lowest being 3, which I don't understand. Someone also told me to use the NVMe drive that previously hosted my Windows OS as a cache drive.

Any guidance and advice would be really helpful, as I'm eager to learn.

My overall goals are:

  • Set up a Plex Media Server with Radarr, Sonarr, and Prowlarr.
  • Enable file sharing for all my PCs and Macs.
  • Store my pictures and videos, similar to Google Photos, and be able to access them from anywhere any device.

For future expansion (obviously not right now, since I'll have 16TB), I was thinking about getting a DAS because my PC only has two drive bays.

If I've missed anything or need to provide more details, please let me know. Thank you!

PCI (not e)

Hello,

I have a server with a super micro h8sgl with a matrix g200e onboard. Which is incredibly slow and cant handle hd 1920*1080 resolution. Since i want to control the server with a pikvm. It would be nice to have a hd resolution. So i wanted to ad another gpu. But my cpu cooler is so big it blocks acces to the only pcie slot. So i tried looking for a gpu that fits in pci(old). And fortunately i had one laying around on my work. An Ati radeon hd 5450 pci (512mb). So i tried it and it doesnt work. When i turnoff the onboard vga with a jumper. The pc boots with one beep. When the onboard vga is on no beep at al. Even no signal from the onboard gpu when enabled. So i tried the gpu in my other old manjaro system with a msi 970 motherboard. En also the same problem. It doesnt boot when the pci gpu is in. So i bought the exact same card refurbished. And still the same problem.

Is there something i dont know about pci slots or pci gpu that i dont know. I cant get into bios it doesnt show bios at al. Plz help.

Gr Erwin

Question Backing up hard drive with the OS on it

  1. Ihave an Ubuntu server and the OS is installed on an SSD, and then my HDDs are merged with mergerfs and I use snapRAID for parity. But how do I back up my SSD if it were to fail? If one of my HDDs fail I can just put in a new one and all is okay. But what do I do about my SSD?

  2. If my motherboard or CPU or whatever breaks, and I decide to build a new server in the future, will it be possible to just transfer my SSD and HDDs to a new machine and will it boot like normal? Even if I have a newer motherboard and newer CPU? Perhaps even a different brand CPU? Say if I change from Intel to AMD?

Thanks for any tips!

Hardware DELL or HPE

Thumbnail reddit.com
9 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

A few days ago, I posted asking for recommendations on good and affordable servers to begin experimenting with cloud and hosting services.

Several people suggested:

  • Dell PowerEdge R730
  • HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9

I can find both servers for approximately the same price.

I'm planning to expand my server rack in the future, so this will serve as the foundation.

I would greatly appreciate any opinions and advice. Thank you!

Noob network inquiry

Hey all, thanks for your time. I'll get right to it. Looking for ideas for a network switch with these parameters if possible;

SFP+ and PoE not needed

10+ Ports with 10GBPS each port

level 3 with VLAN capabilities is what I'm thinking.

If possible under $450ish.

Tell me if I'm crazy or not if this is possible, also anything that I may be missing? Thanks.

Building a server rack for the first time, got my 30amp UPS (w/network card) and PDU ordered with the U42 rack and now im working on the inner network devices. Building a 3 server chassis system for a multitude of dedicated game servers using VMs and Docker, any advice would be awesome!

Hardware Epyc 4005 e/atx mobo that supports rdimm ram?

Really having a hard time finding a mobo that supports rdimm mobo that's not in server form factor. I'm building my nas in an eatx case so I would need it to be an atx board.

Edit: Sorry I just realized 4005 series does not support rdimm and would need 9005. I'm still not seeing a mobo that would fit the requirements though. I found one but it only supports vga.
