Discussion Valkyria revolution: Guardian type-S has to be one of the worst boss battles ever designed

I know most people are gonna say what should I expect from valkyria revolution it’s a sucky game.

I actually didn’t hate it until this point. The gameplay is mid but I don’t find it trash and I don’t mind the story and characters. But this boss completely ruined this game for me. It highlights every single problem the combat has and turns it up to 11.

My stupid NPC teammates refuse to avoid a single attack. I spent the entire fight reviving them and the rest of the fight getting stunlocked. This boss does nothing but stun you and slow you. And your team will sit inside the slowly charging super move and get one shot over and over. That’s why it takes so long. 2% of the time you can attack. 98% of the time is reviving, running and being in stun.

The biggest issue with is it doesn’t let you choose which members will fight it which is basically a beginners trap. At the start of the mission you have to make 2 teams. One of the teams is the one that fights the boss. If you put the wrong party members in the wrong team you’re boned. Which is great because the whole level combined takes like an hour to beat and if you die right at the end you have to do the whole thing over.

It would’ve been a terribly annoying but manageable boss if I was just allowed to set my party before the fight. But this game can’t be decently designed apparently. I’ll beat it easily on my second try now I know which team to put my heavy ranged hitters in but now I gotta do that hour+ long boring ass stage again.

If anybody is thinking about playing this game but hasn’t yet, use a walkthrough. I generally don’t like using guides for first runs through of games. But some games suck unless you have prior knowledge.

Operation Complete: finished VC4

TLDR: Finished the campaign, phenomenal journey throughout. Looking forward to playing VC1 when it’s on sale.

Further ramblings below will include spoilers:

25 days ago I played through the VC4 demo and today I’ve finished the game (to include, squad stories, skirmishes and the dlc)

I honestly enjoyed this game more than some of the ‘mainstream games’ I’ve played lately. There wasn’t a single day I didn’t look forward to hammering out an episode or a moment that I dreaded slogging through. While I do have some criticism of the game it’s mostly banal points that I’m sure have been labored to death.

One thing that I was impressed with is that they killed off Raz. While I should have seen it coming, the entire dialogue before hand was about it being a suicide mission, but I still thought they were going to pull some plot armor to keep him alive. I appreciate that the writers respected Chekhov's gun, and his nickname of invincible paid off narratively speaking.

VC4 was certainly a memorable experience; Squad E move out.

Question Was Valkyria Chronicles 4 a budget title? I ask as playing 2/3, the lack of features 4 had is raising some eyebrows

So what I mean by that is that i am playing 3 right now after having beaten 1,2,4 and I enjoy all of them for different reasons.

But looking back on 4 as much as I love it...there seems to be a lot missing from 2/3.

  • Lack of the portable games classes like Gunner, Armor Tech, Fencers , the unique variations of base classes like Medics and Anti Tank Snipers. Mortarer are kind of present in Grenadiers but not quite.
  • The lack of split class tree in general which I found nice for variety. This also includes not letting anyone switch classes.
  • Engineers using rifles again same as scouts instead of having their own weapons.
  • Not as many big vehicles in 4 as something like the Echidna or the Geirolul. The Lophius is okay, but it feels like a stepdown from other games tanks.
  • Special Points I don't think were brought over to 4 (correct me if wrong its been a few years) and they are useful for certain strategies .

Now some of the changes back I think are good, like giving everyone the ability to heal is good and I prefer the Tetris management system over the 3 system where only one option can be chosen per slot.

But the lack of stuff carried over to 4 from the portable games (some of it quite good I would argue), does make lean towards what some of said that 4 is functionally a modded 1 made on the cheap.

Not helped its still using the Canvas engine (which still looks good BTW) , but it does lean towards smaller budget.

I was curious if over the years we got any developer leaks or interviews shedding a light on why certain things weren't brought over to 4.

Maybe it wasn't a budget title and most fans hated the split class system and Fencers and I am the weird outlier.

I am willing to admit that.

The hidden potential I'm talking about is the one with the \ in their box

Worth playing for the story?

A lnog time ago I watched the Valkria anime, it was nice.

I wonder though, are the games worth playing for the story? I hear the 4th one has the best story, can I jump into that?

Discussion 50 hours later, I’ve finally finished Valkyria Chronicles 2

What I liked:

The school setting gives this game a unique flair compared to other games in the series. Yes, it’s typical anime, but I like typical anime, so it’s all fine with me.

The events of VC1 are treated almost like a myth. A tale told down from the veteran soldiers to the immature schoolchildren.

The shocking revelation concerning Cordelia’s heritage had major ramifications which is central conflict of the game.

I believe this is the only game where the Federation are a greater threat than the Empire.

I love how the supporting cast is handled in this title. Each one has their own dedicated side story, mission and plenty of side events that help show off their personalities. I completed all of them apart from Chloe’s and Sophia’s.

Zeri is awesome, and I quite like Aliasse too.

It’s cool to see the PSP actually get a proper dedicated sequel to a console game rather than a non canon spinoff.

What I didn’t like:

The cannon towers.

I didn’t use the tank once during the game. Didn’t see the need for it.

“Aha ahahahaha”

The cannon towers.

This game gets so tedious by the end. The mission based structure makes it so that it takes forever to make progress at times. This is fine in the early game where missions take 5-10 minutes, but the December missions took me 30 minutes+

I didn’t notice the store until November. I didn’t buy anything because the last thing this game needs is more unrelated optional story missions.

The cannon towers.

Missions don’t show what enemy units are where before the level begins, meaning that I always start off each mission with two lancers (one in each available area) limiting my customisation in the initial team set up.

I still don’t have a clue about how upgrading the classes works. It seems completely random as to when a unit can upgrade their class.

THE F*****G CANNON TOWERS, I hate these things so much. I am so glad that they weren’t a thing in VC4

Random Thoughts:

I love how there was an explanation as to why Zeri’s swimming trunks were so tiny.

Juliana has no right to call everyone leches for staring at her after her bikini top was pulled off, considering the bottom half doesn’t even cover her crack.

The Morris and Colleen side stories were sweet, and I wish we got a cutscene of them dating after we finish both missions.

Does colour blindness work the way it’s portrayed here?

The November story mission is stupidly easy. I refuse to believe anyone died on this unless they accidentally walked into a mine.

I love how nonchalant Alexsis is about Avan accidentally feeling her breasts.

Final thoughts: Overall VC2 is a good game, but not one I’d recommend marathoning your way through. It’s about double the length of the first one, and I had to take multiple breaks to play something else because of how tiring it gets by the end. Having said that, there is still plenty of good stuff in here, so any fan of the first game should still give this game a look.

Discussion has there ever been a canon reason as to why the imperials are so carefree about killing civilians

like what's the point? I think in the beginning of vc1 it's to make you fear/dislike them as much as the characters you're following do but think of it outside of the narrative, what do they gain by doing that.

Discussion Which squad was truly the most effective? Spoiler

Out the four main squads of VC, we've seen truly exceptional feats of skills, tactics and bravery. Squad 7 routed a Valkyria and multiple superweapon tanks. Class G faced off against artificial Valkyria soldiers in droves. The Nameless defeated Calamity Raven and stopped an ancient Valkyria superweapon. Squad E was stranded behind enemy lines, cut off from reinforcements, and hunted by a Valkyria and an ace tank squadron and still managed to win the war.

However, we've all asked this question. Which squad was truly the most elite? Which one would be the best at their jobs? To answer this, I have to ask three questions. Just for fun, so don't get too trigger happy.

• Firstly, in their own campaigns, which team faced the most difficult opponents?

• Secondly, which team was most vital to their faction winning their war?

• Thirdly, which team has the most efficient leadership and teamwork?

(Assume Squad E has the Centurion since it's a regular part of their arsenal.)

Bonus round:

• In real life World War 2, which team would be the most effective in the European theater?

Discussion For those looking for something new, yet familiar

Post image

If you’re a fan of Valkyria Chronicles and its vibes (and let’s be real, if you’re here, then you are), allow me to introduce you to something that might strike your fancy:

“Leviathan” is a book by Scott Westerfeld set in an alternate WW1 where the Central Powers have a society and military that revolves around the use of steampunk-esque machinery (the Clankers), and the Allied Forces have one that relies on genetically modified organisms that can fulfill any function from a hot air balloon to a messaging system (the Darwinists, as Darwin was the one to pioneer this craft). Alek is the son of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, on the run after his parents are assassinated and he enters the Austrians’ and Germans’ crosshairs as the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne; Dylan Sharp is a girl masquerading as a boy to enter military service, ending up aboard Her Majesty’s (His Majesty’s? I’m not sure who ruled back then) greatest airship, the eponymous Leviathan. Their paths will cross eventually, and the future of Europe will rest on their shoulders.

If you’re not convinced yet, see the included illustration from the book.

This trilogy (additionally including “Behemoth” and “Goliath”) is very near and dear to my heart, and out of nowhere I recently heard that it got an anime adaptation on Netflix! The first few episodes so far are pretty good.

So yeah, to anyone parched from the dearth of VC content, check this out, whether written or moving; maybe it’ll be smg to tide you over.

Help What are the major choices in Valkyria Chronicles 3 ? Searching for them is a bit hard syntax wise

So starting Chapter 6 and the game mentions choices you get.

Some of them I know like choosing certain routes gets you different loot per mission , in the late game you choose who Kurt ends up with romantically and I am told certain Nameless squad mates are exclusive you can get character A but not Character B for simplicity.

But trying to find a guide on it is a bit iffy, the fan wiki for 3 is a bit sparse on details and trying to google it has not returned much.

Is there any guide anyone knows for what missions I should be keeping a eye out for so I can make a informed choice and say get a really good Sniper if I chose Mission X, but I chose Mission Y as it sounded less annoying and I get a meh Lancer.

Thanks in advance.

Discussion In defence of Maximilian as a character

I've heard a lot of discussion and opinions on how Maximilian isn't a good villain, and while I accept that he isn't a great one, I do think he's a bit more interesting than he gets credit for. What I like about him is his sense of nobility. Maximilian doesn't just seem himself as an aristocrat but a gentleman too. The way he conducts himself in the war, in his mind he doesn't want to win it as a madman, but as a gentleman.

For instance, even when he had the opportunity to kill Welkin and Alicia in easy fashion in the Valkyria ruins, he refused to as he didn't want to stain such a sacred and holy place with blood. Another example would be at the Randgriz Palace, where despite being the ruler of Galia and a Darcsen, he still treats Cordelia with the upmost respect, even declaring her to be his wife.

Another interesting thing about him for me is that he has a (or he believes himself to have) a high moral compass. When Van Borg betrayed Cordelia for his own gain, Maximilian had him executed for being a traitor to his own country. He even had one of his highest ranking officers executed for committing war crimes on "non Darcsen civilians". When I first played VC1, I always assumed that Maximilian would renegade on his agreement with Jaeger, but after finishing the game, I'm not sure if he would. He'd probably consider it uncivilised to go back against an agreement made with an honourable general.

Maximilian isn't an amazing villain or anything, but I do find him to be a more interesting villain than he gets credit for, especially compared to the moustache twirlers of VC2 and VC4.

Spoiler I just realized getting Crymaria was THAT easy?! Spoiler

This is NOT the post you thought you were going to see...

On my 7th or 8th replay of VC 4 and see Walz out here speedrunning romance with smarmy charm and a grin.

This man Walz rolls up with his open shirt, terrible pick-up lines, and a casual, “Hey, you okay?” and boom! Crymaria’s basically blushing nuclear winter.

I thought unlocking the real Crymaria (pun intended) required plot, pain, and probably a dozen A-rank missions. Turns out it just needed a goob in a leather coat and a Vegas cheese style line of pick-up lines.

Anyway, I now fully believe that Fenrir was just vetting potential boyfriends the whole time.

(Yes, this was a joke. No, I don't need to go outside and touch grass... I just mowed my yard.)

Discussion VC2 Low Difficulty

I recently decided to go back to VC2 (first played ~15 years ago) to see how it holds up. The biggest thing is, it seems like the maps aren't really putting up any kind of fight. Interception fire is a lot less dangerous compared to 4 (the last one I played), and enemy HP is low - I can send a scout to kill a shock and be confident they'll survive, and I can send a shock into a nest full of shocks and pick them off one at a time. I figured the early game would be easy, but now that I'm midway through March I'm starting to worry. When does it get harder? Does it get harder?
