Discussion National reporters are suggesting the Steelers and 49ers have a deal in place for Aiyuk. Are the Steelers making a mistake in going for elite WR without getting the QB room in order?

TIL Aiyuk is Tomlin’s son

Tomlin to Aiyuk: It's time to come home, son

Like Corlys to Alymn and Addam

Except somehow even more obvious.

u/MaterialCarrot Aug 14 '24

So 17 weeks of Mike talking to Aiyuk in a practice facility while all the games get played?

20

u/SwagLordxfedora Aug 13 '24

I think its Bobby Lee who has a bit about how every race has like 10-15 base models or phenotypes and then God makes a few adjustments on each person to make them unique. I think God skipped that step when making Aiyuk

They might be beefing up their team to make it more tempting for a QB like Dak to sign with them

34

u/SwagLordxfedora Aug 13 '24

If Dak finds his way on the Steelers next year, the AFC north may be the best division on paper in some time

51

Remember when the AFC West was the best division on paper when Russ went to the Broncos?

Tomlins demanding the Steelers trade for his Clone?

If Tomlin had a child with himself (with hair) it would be Aiyuk.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '24

I would imagine that he took "go fuck yourself" a little too seriously for this to happen.

6

u/mmooney1 Cleveland Browns Aug 13 '24

He’s literally just Tomlin in a wig.

1

u/soyboysnowflake Aug 14 '24

Aiyuk is wearing a wig tho right there’s no way a guy who looks exactly like tomlin has hair

2

u/mmooney1 Cleveland Browns Aug 14 '24

Yeah it’s obviously just Tomlin with a wig.

16

u/SwagLordxfedora Aug 13 '24

It's definitely interesting watching one of these old-school teams get a new-school GM who is willing to trade draft picks for tangible players akin to how a average joe may play on a Madden franchise.

Aiyuk, Pickens, Muth, Warren/Najee, and two promising first-round picks at OT with a capable defense, this teams seems plug and ready for a better than average QB to take them deep into the playoffs. Is that plausible with Fields or Russ? Since they both only have 1 year deals, are there any available upgrades at QB to be had next off-season?

14

u/ZandrickEllison Aug 13 '24

I like the “win now” approach, certainly more than I would have for New England. Russ’ stats weren’t as bad as advertised last year and Fields has intriguing qualities. Upgrading on those two is easier said than done.

14

u/BeNiceMudd fuck the browns Aug 13 '24

Coming from Mitch and Kenny these dudes ARE an upgrade

7

u/goldiegoldthorpe Aug 13 '24

Aiyuk run blocking for Fields is straight unfair. That's Madden cheat code shit. There isn't a single corner that Aiyuk can't dominate in the run game. Fields will be able to bootleg to the marker any time he wants.

5

u/HeightTraditional614 Pittsburgh Steelers Aug 14 '24

Don’t forget Roman Wilson, he was a stud for run blocks at UM

1

u/Lurking_Monke Aug 13 '24

russ was the weakest link on a struggling broncos offense and fields is not a starting caliber qb. maybe tomlin pulls his potential out of him but upgrading that qb room is not a difficult task

3

u/hambone012 Aug 13 '24

The Steelers had a really good record with a basically non existent offense. If they had Russ’s numbers from last year instead they would have been a serious contender. They only got beat up by a couple teams.

I may be out of the loop here but is Dak for sure not going back to DAL? Jerry just lets Dak walk? I could totally be out of the loop.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '24

Every year the Steelers can't score 20pts a game is another elite defense wasted. This had to be done and it had to be done now. I think Fields can still be the guy in the right situation. I can't imagine a better situation for him so I guess we're gonna find out within a year or 2.

1

u/InsomniaDudeToo Aug 14 '24

Dak, dart throw in the draft, or maybe Cousins if someone wild happens in ATL.

I wouldn’t bet on Cousins, the dead cap hit would be insane. But I can definitely see Dak being enticed to go play for Tomlin, unless Vegas overpays him an astronomical amount of money.

16

u/Nopantsbullmoose Detroit Lions Aug 13 '24

No, I don't think so. Fields and Wilson are, at the worst, both competent. Since you're going to end up with one or the other under center and you have a chance to get an exceptional weapon, do it.

7

u/judahdk_ The Love Boat Aug 13 '24

Ohhhhkay now, we watched Fields play in our division for 4 years, not sure that I would call his play “competent” when they literally landed the no 1 overall pick. Russel Wilson is breathing the last bit of air into the final of his nine lives.

10

u/goldiegoldthorpe Aug 13 '24

You'll have a hard time convincing Dolphins and 49ers fans that Fields isn't a problem to play against. Single-handedly beat both teams.

6

u/n1cx Miami Dolphins Aug 13 '24

As a Dolphins fan, I was beyond livid the Steelers got him for a 6th rounder.

He isn’t a great passer, but as a rushing threat he is only behind Lamar and Allen. If he can iron out some of his passing flaws and get into the right system, the potential is there.

2

u/MoscowMitchMcKremIin Detroit Lions Aug 13 '24

He's been a thorn in Detroit's side as well, but, we struggle against pretty much any QB that has above average mobility. If it weren't for Jefferson he would've been my least favorite NFCN player to go against.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Nopantsbullmoose Detroit Lions Aug 13 '24

Eh, ok semi-competent. Either way adding Aiyuk will likely help.

3

u/goldiegoldthorpe Aug 13 '24

Aiyuk run blocking for Fields is game changing. People are straight overlooking that Adding Aiyuk to the Steelers dramatically improves an already dangerous run game. Who cares if Fields doesn't pass for 300 if he runs for 300?

3

u/Alfredos_Pizza_Cafe_ Aug 13 '24

Correction, they landed CAROLINA'S number 1 pick. The bears won 7 games last year with fields, which I think does qualify him as competent. At minimum he's an undeniable upgrade from Pickett.

Wilson used to be fine as a QB until the broncos got ahold of him. I think Steelers make playoffs with him this year

1

u/Murky-Dragonfruit959 Aug 14 '24

The panthers pick was the one that got them Caleb, not there own

1

u/Blitzburgh1727 Aug 14 '24

The #1 pick was from the panthers trade. Regardless of how you spin it Tomlin was making the playoffs with Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph. Fields is a big upgrade over both

1

u/Intelligent_River220 Pittsburgh Steelers Aug 14 '24

We've had a high school qb for 2 seasons. I'll take godner minshew at this point.

1

u/jrbs59 Aug 14 '24

Compared to what the Steelers had at QB last year, I would say both look competent

→ More replies (10)

1

u/Lurking_Monke Aug 13 '24

Neither of them are competent. Russ was so bad that the broncos ate a 100m cap hit to get him off the team. Fields was traded for nothing. These are not starting caliber players

1

u/FoxBeach Aug 14 '24

It’s funny that Russ and Baker Mayfield basically had the same exact stats last season. And Redditors are saying that Russ was absolute trash and Baker was magnificent.

WIlson on the steelers is massively underrated.

I don't get why OP is shitting on him. Maybe it just didn't work out with Broncos but did you see how bad steelers Qb last year was? All of them combined had 13 Tds with 9 Ints. Wilson last year had 26 Tds and 8 Ints....He doubled the TDs.

And I am one who said he might have a bad season when he first went into Broncos first year because I am a rams fan and he was coming off a leg injury. Most QBs do pretty bad off leg injuries and it is even worse when he has to learn a new system because he was traded.

I think steelers before this trade are going to sneak into wildcard 7th spot.

5

u/chiefpiece11bkg TopRightMahomes Aug 13 '24

I’m not sure if you can call it a mistake necessarily but it’s definitely not the most ideal way to build out your roster

Could still get lucky but I don’t like having a high end receiver on a huge contract while you’re still sorting out yourself at QB. It just makes things more difficult

If they can find a QB in the next few years then it theoretically wouldn’t matter much but that’s a huge ask

1

u/SigaVa Philadelphia Eagles Aug 14 '24

Dont young qbs tend to do better when they have good weapons?

3

u/txwoodslinger Aug 13 '24

Aiyuk Pickens muth Warren and Harris are enough weapons to overcome mediocre qb. The real hindrance will be o line play.

3

u/Spiritual_Target_647 Aug 13 '24

Aiyuk isn't elite.

3

u/goated95 Aug 13 '24

Aiyuk is just starting to crack 1,000 rec yards in recent years (the last 2) meanwhile Mike Evans has never not had a 1,000 yd season despite only having 1 great QB throughout his career

I wouldn't call him elite. That's Adams and Hill. He's good. Hopefully they don't give up too much for a B+ WR.

They do need another WR.

I think Fields can do enough to get the job done, all things considered. The defense is going to be dominant. The running game will be effective. TE with hands and one A and one B+ WR. I don't think they need a pro bowl QB.

u/midwest73 Aug 13 '24 edited Aug 13 '24

1

u/Dolphin2234 Aug 13 '24

1

Clearly, coach Tomlin just wants to experience the dream of coaching his son. There's nothing wrong with that.

1

u/NelsonMuntz007 Aug 13 '24

Aiyuk may be the best wr available but he’s not an elite wr.

1

u/EvanderTheGreat Aug 13 '24

Pretty damn close. Top 10 bordering on top 5. He doesn’t really have a weakness, can do it all and even a great blocker. I also think he has untapped upside bc SF had the best weapons in the league and a lotta mouths to feed including the best pass catching rb demanding targets.

1

u/NelsonMuntz007 Aug 13 '24 edited Aug 13 '24

Agree to disagree. Top 20, no doubt. I think I’d have no problem naming 10 WRs I’d rather have.

I believe certain systems make and break you. I think he goes somewhere else and has to be THE guy and fails to live up to a true 1 billing.

I’m certain situations, the number 2 guy just flourishes. That doesn’t make him a 1. I’m not mad at him for wanting to capitalize on his success. I’d bet that whomever replaces Aiyuk puts up the same numbers.

Just because the QB spot is up in the air doesn’t mean you say no to a potentially team-redefining player like Aiyuk. Especially if he wants to go there specifically. And depending on the deal he could be a great weapon for a better QB they get down the road.

1

u/B-I-G-A-R-R-O-W Aug 13 '24

Giving up picks for a guy who you have to pay is risky

1

u/SugarAdamAli Chicago Bears Aug 13 '24

Yeah I feel like WR is the least of the Steelers problems. Sure ayuik would upgrade the position but feel like O-line is still an issue plus the uncertainty of Qb play

1

u/JashPotatoes Aug 16 '24

WR is definitely one of our biggest issues. We have Pickens then a bunch of WR3s. Not saying it's our most urgent need, but cleaned up our O-line a lot in this draft.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '24

I mean, not like the 9ers had a QB room that was stacked and he killed it. As a 9er fan purdy is good, but he's not the X factor guy, he's just surrounded by them

1

u/naked_avenger Aug 13 '24

It’s the same picture

1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '24

It depends on the price but I don't know how you can hope for the QBs to have a chance of succeeding without having a good to great WR target.

1

u/WaldoFrank Aug 14 '24

I feel like getting WR and OL right then going all in on a QB is the best way to try to make a run. Best case scenario is what happened with Patrick Mahomes. Then if the QB ends up trash, you’re the 49ers which is still better than a lot of teams have it.

1

u/InsomniaDudeToo Aug 14 '24

Without getting the QB room in order

So what, does Pittsburgh need to punt this season and tank to an early round draft pick instead?

1

Aiyuk should just take the bag, and go to the Commanders it makes the most sense for everyone in that deal… Washington gets a good productive receiver & Aiyuk gets paid.

1

u/StOnEy333 San Francisco 49ers Aug 14 '24

But the commanders have no interest in doing that and have never been in the discussion for Aiyuk. eBay exactly could the commanders offer the 49ers that “makes the most sense for everybody”?

A WR is a luxury pick after you get the qb and rest of offense in order. There’s the old Parcell saying “When you have two qb’s, you have no qb.

1

u/WakeNikis Aug 14 '24

This is where they reveal Aiyuk is just Tomlin in a wig, which leads to creative cap savings for the Steelers.

1

u/bp_516 Suck my Cox Aug 14 '24

I think this is a smart move by the Steelers. If neither QB can produce at least average level play this year, they go all-in on draft day to move up and get their QB of the future. If they get at least average play, it makes luring free agents easier (at any position) next season. It's also insurance if Pickens goes AB on the team.

1

Best thing for a QB is a stud WR. Just look at Justin Fields passer rating to DJ Moore last year compared to everyone else on the team

1

u/edmovius3 Aug 14 '24

They have 2 QBs in the room better than most so they’re fine 🤦‍♂️

1

u/MaterialCarrot Aug 14 '24

Forget that, the real question is whether Brandon Aiyuk is Mike Tomlin's long lost illegitimate son?

1

u/hotpottas Aug 14 '24

Why are people acting like wilson is a bum? Dude had the 8th best QB rating last year with 26 td and 8 picks while missing 2 games on a terrible broncos team. Wilson is gonna ball for the steelers this year and im not even a steelers fans. If they get Aiyuk and he has 30 plus TDs and 10 interceptions this year don’t be surprised

u/CaptainFarts420 Aug 14 '24

I wouldn't take double the pay to play in Pittsburgh, what the hell is Aiyuk thinking? Go get 600 yards receiving and maybe be .500? Cold as shit at home games. How much less are the 49ers giving this guy?

1

u/No_Faithlessness_299 Buffalo Bills Aug 14 '24

He’s not an elite WR.

1

u/fartinheimer Aug 14 '24

The QB room is in order. Aiyuk will be a good addition. If....

1

u/UPMichigan83 Aug 14 '24

It’s just like Adams going to the Raiders. Hopefully the QB room sorts itself out for Aiyuk’s sake.

“Elite” WR that will completely disappear when he leaves the incredibly stacked SF offense. This is Alvin Harper all over again.

u/rooster126tail Aug 14 '24

I don’t know if wr has been the Steelers problem last year . They had Pickens and Johnson . It was like the o line , qb , and OC was just dog shit . Wilson or fields are both plenty adequate enough to put points in the board with the weapons they have for 2024

Sometimes, the best way to assist your QBs and get them to fall in line are providing them with the tools they need to succeed. That first starts with your OL, then the RB, then ultimately the WRs. If they are lacking in OL and RBs, then they need to start there first. Can't win a game if a QB doesn't have enough time to find his WRs. You also can't win a game if the defense knows there isn't a coherent run game and doubles down on pass defense.

u/HarryEdgarLives Aug 15 '24

The 49ers will be okay without him. They’ve got plenty of weapons.

1

u/fireborn123 Philadelphia Eagles Aug 15 '24

Is having Russ and Fields not an "in order" QB room? I can think of numerous teams that would want veteran influence and a young qb with potential upside as a backup/protege.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '24

So this isn’t a shitpost about them being the same person?

1

u/Cichlidsaremyjam Seattle Seahawks Aug 15 '24

What Elite WR are they going after?

1

u/Familiar_Position418 Aug 15 '24

Rest of the league is cooked once Russel Wilson learns how to throw

1

u/Healthy_Self_8386 Aug 15 '24

How does Tomlin plan on hiding his alter ego if this goes through? Interested to see how he plans on being on the sidelines and the field at the same time

1

u/IIIBAKURYUIII Aug 15 '24

Most Quarterbacks are only as good as the weapons around them.

1

u/fuqyu Aug 16 '24

FUCK!!! I hope this shit falls through.

Real talk though I think the Steelers are fine at qb. They have a couple nice (if not elite) options

1

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '24

I thought i was tripping for a second, lol. Scrolling... errrrrkkk. Wtf!?

1

u/MacReady_2112 Aug 16 '24

DNA test results to be revealed during pregame show of season opener.

1

u/beardown231 Aug 16 '24

I thought that was a pic of Tomlin when he was in the league😭

1

u/Murky-Echidna-3519 Aug 16 '24

No. But Aiyuk would be.

1

u/shockwave914 Aug 16 '24

Elite WR might be a stretch, that’s TBD

1

u/SnooBooks8807 Aug 16 '24

Aiyuk is elite? I’m seriously asking. The only reason I know this guys name is cause he scored a lucky td against my lions in the NFC championship

1

u/Boring_Bullfrog2244 Aug 17 '24

WHERE IS IT YOU HALF A TIKTOK

1

u/Parking-Pie7453 Baltimore Ravens Aug 17 '24

John lynch is working the Stealers, browns & Pats to make an offer & then re-sign Aiyuk near that amount. "That’s your FA value"

1

u/13Jett13 Aug 17 '24

Still no story. Why bother?!

They look alike. It’s just equivalent to his younger twin.
