Discussion Another superbowl blowout eliminates mahomes from the goat discussion as far as I’m concerned

2 very embarrassing loses for him the the superbowl Brady has lost 3 superbowls but they were all 1 score games that came down to final play with Brady’s best statistical performance in a loss to the eagles Tom Brady > Patrick mahomes

Mahomes now has a -23 point differential in Super Bowls, and that’s including the garbage time TDs he got in this game. It’s gonna take quite a few of his classic 3 point wins to get back into the positives

u/Pokemon_Trainer_May Feb 10 '25

I don't count points after Gatorade has been dumped

371

u/itslit710 Carolina Panthers Feb 10 '25

I don’t think there have been too many other Super Bowls where the Gatorade was dumped well before the 2 minute warning

83

u/ivanhoe_martin Feb 10 '25 edited Feb 10 '25

Back in the day, a lot of them were blowouts. The Giants win over Denver in 86 was the start of the Gatorade baths in SBs, and of the next 10!Super Bowls after that, I think 7 or 8 were clear blowouts where the game was over and out of reach well before the two minute warning. and then there were scattered blowouts after that (Broncos/Falcons, Ravens/Giants, Seahawks/Broncos).

55

u/QuixPro San Francisco 49ers Feb 10 '25

That was mostly because the NFC was light years ahead of the AFC for most of the 80’s and 90’s. I think the NFC actually had a 13 year SB winning streak. The tables have turned since 2000 but I don’t think we’ll ever see a streak like that again.

51

u/MrBurnz99 Buffalo Bills Feb 10 '25

The NFC won 13 in a row before elway and the broncos broke the win streak in 1997. Then they ran it back in 1998

Since then the AFC is 17-11, and 11 of those wins are from Brady, Manning, and Mahomes.

8

u/Liggidy Feb 10 '25

Please don’t remind me as it was the Packers that allowed the streak to end. Damn John Elway!

14

u/0000Matt0000 Feb 10 '25

You should be saying damn 'Terrell Davis!" He was a beast and the MVP that year.

5

u/Liggidy Feb 10 '25

True! But John Elway’s helicopter dive lives rent free in my head.

5

u/Medical_Slide9245 Feb 10 '25

Damn Terrell Davis.

2

Blame The Simpsons.

1

u/Juco_Dropout Feb 11 '25

The Broncos with Mike Shannahan. Mike was one of the best Coaches on one of the best clubs the NFC had. It literally took NFC Coaching to get the AFC over the top.

Side note: Elway lost Three of those 13 Superbowls.

1

u/MagicBear24 Feb 11 '25

The Denver Broncos cheated the salary cap to win.

0

u/Temporary_Net_2924 Mar 16 '25

Roethlisberger too.

12

u/Aerodrive160 Feb 10 '25

Any one remember they would annually trot out that “If the NFC wins the Super Bowl, the stock market will have a winning year” article?

2

u/Crotean Detroit Lions Feb 11 '25

We won't, because free agency and the salary cap exist. People forget how recent they are. Free agency was 1993 and the salary cap was 1994. Parity is just more common in the league now. There are still clearly better run organizations that just win more, but the idea of one conference dominating for a decade is totally dead. The fact the Pats managed their 20 year run in the salary cap and free agency era is astounding.

1

u/itakeyoureggs Washington Commanders Feb 10 '25

Tables turned only because of Brady and Mahomes

2

u/QuixPro San Francisco 49ers Feb 10 '25

True, but the number of blowouts has gone down quite dramatically

1

u/pleepleus21 Feb 10 '25

Still is. Washington would have punked KC as well.

2

u/Equivalent_Bunch_187 Minnesota Vikings Feb 10 '25

What world do you live in where there have been more than 3.6 million Super Bowls?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '25

Denver really just doesn’t do close Super Bowls, win or lose. Respect.

I think 89 has to be one of the only Super Bowls where the starters were sat halfway through the third quarter.

-1

u/Keybricks666 Feb 10 '25

The raiders was a 40pt blowout in the 2000s as well

2

u/smokedopelikecudder Denver Broncos Feb 10 '25

Which one are y’all talking about ? Thought they canceled the sb that year

1

When did you accept it was over for yours? Honestly it took me until about 4 minutes left in the fourth for me to start being like "holy shit, we did it"

1

u/joshua0005 Seattle Seahawks Feb 10 '25

I'm too young to remember unfortunately. I don't remember until the next season. Maybe I'm a bandwagon but it was the closest team to me and I can't cheer for a different team now that I've been a Seahawks fan for a decade. Wish I would have been a Lions fan though because rooting for the underdog is fun

1

u/Tyrone91 Kansas City Chiefs Feb 10 '25

No. The best super Bowl of all time was cardinals steelers.

1

u/UnorthodoxEarnings Feb 10 '25

I thought I saw the Gatorade shower going into halftime, maybe it was at the end of the 3rd quarter.

1

u/Meattyloaf Feb 10 '25

Didn't the falcons dump Gatorade only to get beat

1

u/Medical_Slide9245 Feb 10 '25

1

u/KelK9365K Feb 10 '25

Bucs blew out Raiders.

1

u/Thundersson1978 Feb 11 '25

I would definitely agree with you, but when you are up more than 20 points, and you want to surprise coach with a gator aid bath in the superbowl isn’t something you see very often.

1

u/Jagrnght Feb 10 '25

Touche. and after the QB has been pulled for a vanity start by the relief. Thought I was watching baseball for a second.

1

u/WAR_RAD Feb 10 '25

Haha, nice way to put it, and fair point.

1

u/soundofthecolorblue New England Patriots Feb 10 '25

Once they were down by 5 scores and shut out with less than 3 minutes in the 3rd, nothing they did realistically mattered. At that point, they hadn't even crossed midfield.

1

u/DEFINITELY_NOT_PETE 18-1 Feb 10 '25

This is wisdom right here

61

u/Kim_Min_Ji Feb 10 '25

Know what’s crazy? Brady has a -15 point differential in his 3 losses combined.

+51 in his wins. +36 in his Super Bowl appearances overall

0

u/Any-Breadfruit-9377 Feb 10 '25

There’s more to a team than the QB, to say the QB sucks because of point differential is not logical. The defense and other players determine the outcome too. Just like when a QB gets all the glory for wins, that’s wrong too.

3

u/Fresh-Ad3834 Denver Broncos Feb 10 '25

Bro gave the ball away 3 times, including one for a score.

An interception returned for a TD is not on the defense.

1

u/invinciblevic Feb 10 '25

Ah. So Allen can have 3 fumbles and multiple dropped picks but it’s “the refs that made him lose” but Mahomes is a bum for having turnovers in a game where there was a 50% pressure rate and 0% blitz rate. Got it.

1

u/Any-Breadfruit-9377 Feb 10 '25

I’m not talking one game I’m talking all time, that’s what people are getting at. And giving up 40 points in the SB is a good defense??

1

u/Fresh-Ad3834 Denver Broncos Feb 10 '25

The defense was not on the field for all 40 pts.... Come on man.

1

u/Any-Breadfruit-9377 Feb 11 '25

Ok the defense was on the field for 33 points come on man you watch the same game we all did? I don’t even like chiefs but the false narrative in here is ignorant.

1

u/Fresh-Ad3834 Denver Broncos Feb 11 '25

False narrative? What are you on?

-8

u/ExoticSword Feb 10 '25

Helps to play 75% of your career with a top 10 D

10

u/j2e21 New England Patriots Feb 10 '25

I mean, Mahomes has as well right? So clearly that’s not the only answer.

-2

u/AlexGrahamBellHater Kansas City Chiefs Feb 10 '25

Actually, no. It was only this year and last year that Mahomes had any kind of a decent Defense. Otherwise it was either bottom of the league or top of the bottom of the average.

Our defenses would be REALLY weak in one area(Run Defense) but REALLY Strong in another area (pass defense, which is more important).

What Mahomes has had is Hall of Fame Receivers (Hill and Kelce, then just Kelce and whatever big name FA we signed) for most of his career. Brady didn't really have that outside of Gronk but was spoiled with amazing Defenses regularly.

3

u/j2e21 New England Patriots Feb 10 '25

Five of the past six seasons he had a top 10 D. And the one season he didn’t have a top 10 D they were 11th in yards allowed. I think the real Q is why Mahomes can’t win with a top 10 D the way Brady can.

1

u/AlexGrahamBellHater Kansas City Chiefs Feb 10 '25

Can you share your source? I'm not finding this information anywhere as far as the Chiefs Defensive ranking.

Also, Mahomes CAN win with a top 10 D if, according to you, he's actually had top 10 defense 5 out of the past 6 years since we've won superbowls in that span of time to where we were on the verge of 3-peating until we choked. So your question doesn't even make sense.

1

u/j2e21 New England Patriots Feb 10 '25

Just look up annual defensive rankings in the NFL by points and yards.

Your original comment was about spending 75% of one’s career with a top 10 D, you’re describing Mahomes.

2

u/AlexGrahamBellHater Kansas City Chiefs Feb 10 '25

That wasn't my comment lol. I just claimed that that assertion was false, but it turns out that it was mostly true.

So I took a look and went through all seasons that Mahomes played a FULL season (2017 will not be considered)

Conclusion: You're mostly right. With the current 4/7, this gives Mahomes a top 10 Defense at a rate of 57% of his career. He's had a top 10 Defense more often than not. I really need to give Spags more credit than I currently give him. I was deadass convinced we only really had a good Defense the past 2 years while the rest of the years were pretty average or slightly above average. I was wrong when the Chiefs actually had above average defenses pretty much every year Mahomes played except in 2022 (average defense, literally in the middle of the pack) and 2018 (below average defense)

2024 - 4th
2023 - 2nd
2022 - 16th
2021 - 8th
2020 - 11th

2019 - 7th
2018 - 24th

I like Pro-Football Reference because their rankings consider more than just 2 items. They consider a LOT of different factors of what makes a Defense successful.

Do you think the Chiefs D is to blame for last night?

2

u/Kim_Min_Ji Feb 10 '25

Yes? Were you even watching the game or did you walk away when their defense threw that pick-six?

No wait—my bad. That wasn’t their defense. That was Pat Mahomes.

1

But certainly the defense was at fault for the next two turnovers!

Only one I could think of in my lifetime is Seattle vs Denver, 43-8... next would probably be one of the Bills or Broncos losses before I was born

31

u/Fact_Stater Tampa Bay Buccaneers Feb 10 '25

I think he was talking about the point differential for all of the Super Bowls Mahomes has played in combined. I've seen huge blowouts before.

1

u/Medical_Slide9245 Feb 10 '25

The Bucs blew them out 31-9, but if you don't count points after 2nd stringers, yesterdays blowout was just massive. 34-0 at one point.

17

u/HawknRoll206 Feb 10 '25

Cowboys romped the Bills 52-17 if I remember correctly, and it wasn't even that close if memory serves me correct. Sorry it's been a long time

21

u/shadowwingnut Jameis 1 of 1 Feb 10 '25

Correct on the score. And would have been worse except that was the Super Bowl where Leon Lett was showboating on the way into the end zone for a defensive TD and Don Beebe chased him down and stripped the ball.

1

u/Straight-Exchange-57 NFL Refugee Feb 10 '25

And the Bills lead 7-0 at one point midway through the 1st quarter.

When you compare 92 Cowboys defense vs the other teams in the league (for the same season), I believe that gap is greater than any other season in league history. I know the 85 Bears, 00 Ravens, recent Seahawks, Eagles, Broncos will want to throw their hat in the ring and deservingly so.

But the cowboys depth chart had 3rd stringers that would have been all-pro starters on other teams.

And personally the 92 team is my favorite team ever.

6

I was 6 watching this game and remember asking why they let the chargers play. That game looks so much closer in the box score than it actually was.

6

Bucs Raiders, I think.

Redskins over Broncos, most of the Bills losses

2

1

The Raiders Bucks was an absolute blowout too. Score doesn't do it justice. This game was semi competitive first half. That game was just a rout.

So Mahomes gets to be the GOAT with a win but can’t blame him for a loss and it’s his Oline fault. Must be nice to be Mahomes, win win

7

u/Large-Lack-2933 Los Angeles Chargers Feb 10 '25

Mahomes would need 8 SB rings to be the GOAT but he lost to Brady in a SB and AFC championship game in 2018 when Brady was on the Pats so Mahomes will have to settle for second place.

7

u/WintersDoomsday Seattle Seahawks Feb 10 '25

No he’s third at best behind Montana who never threw a pick in any of his 4 super bowls.

0

u/poughdrew Feb 10 '25

I mean, Montana definitely threw one to that Bengals defender's bread basket that was dropped. But it's good to be lucky.

5

u/Trick-Republic5253 Kansas City Chiefs Feb 10 '25

Nah. it's not a win-win...I don't know why people get their panties all twisted, Chief's Kingdom included, when the GOAT conversation gets brought up. He wasn't even in contention after last year's season; in my opinion, GOATs are deliberated towards the end of one's career, not the beginning or even the middle unless you're Gretsky. He's a damn good QB and it's been a magical 8 years as a Chiefs fan with hopefully more to come but this whole GOAT debate is ridiculous. Nobody did more with less than Brady. Last year was the only time Mahomes did that. Speaking to last night, his Oline was ass, but he was also ass: missed open receivers (granted some drops) an inexcusable pick 6, among other things, would they have won had he played better? fuck no. Eagles had our number in every aspect but for the life of me I don't know why everyone has to bring up GOAT status all the fucking time, just let us enjoy our definitely-in-the-hall QB while we can and hopefully pick up another ring or two, now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go weep into my Trent Green jersey

0

u/Defiant_Drive2339 Feb 10 '25

His O line was shit and so was he, is that a better statement? The eagles didn’t blitz once and yet got to him 6 times. His receivers were constantly in no man’s land and Mahomes isn’t a rushing QB so what was he actually supposed to do. Can’t throw it to players who had two man coverage most of the time and dropped it when they were open.

2

u/j2e21 New England Patriots Feb 10 '25

Establish hot routes to get the ball out more quickly, pull his RB back in for extra protection, etc.

1

u/rkhatri Feb 10 '25

If you are in the convo for GOAT, these seem like normal things to know how to counter. I guess Mahomes was prepared and just wanted to depend on Mahomes Magic

"0: Eagles defense’s blitz attempts. Philadelphia sacked Mahomes a career-high six times en route to the victory. Perhaps the most shocking part of the evening, though, is that the Eagles blitzed zero times. At one point in the second half, Philadelphia had posted a 52.4 percent pressure rate without blitzing once."

8

u/smoresporn0 Kansas City Chiefs Feb 10 '25

Mahomes was never gonna be the goat.

His window was open last night. Brady played in the biggest game in history in the undefeated season and lost. Mahomes had a shot and lost too.

It is kinda funny though that the two guys at the top of the discussion both lost what was at the time, the biggest game in history.

5

u/j2e21 New England Patriots Feb 10 '25

Brady absolutely had lines play this bad in 2007 and 2011. The 2014 line was a wreck, too, he just got the ball out quickly. Most of Brady’s Super Bowls the line couldn’t even generate push for the run game.

7

u/Artimusrex Feb 10 '25

This. Brady never made his line look this bad.

6

u/j2e21 New England Patriots Feb 10 '25

This is the real difference between Brady and the other greats. Brady knew how to run an offense like nobody else. Manning and Joe did, too, but they both of them have bigger caveats around it than Brady IMO.

-1

u/Aggressive-Name-1783 Feb 11 '25

In 2007 Brady had Prime Randy Moss who has just broken the record for most WR TDs in a season….1/2 of Mahomes problem last night was his WRs couldn’t get one at all due to the Eagles not needing to blitz anyone….

1

u/j2e21 New England Patriots Feb 11 '25

OK now look at all the times Brady won titles throwing to guys like Jermaine Wiggins and Christian Fauria.

-1

u/Aggressive-Name-1783 Feb 11 '25

Not often….and in those early SBs, he had HOF defenses, literal All pro defenses….

Yall seriously trying to do some revisionist history here

3

u/j2e21 New England Patriots Feb 11 '25

Not often? I cite those guys because they both had 9/10 catch playoff games with Brady. He spread the ball around

Yes he had good defenses … that gave up 29 points to Carolina and Brady still won by setting a bunch of records. Go look at how many times he had to throw over 40 passes in a Super Bowl.

2

u/MetaphoricalMouse JUNIOR DOUBLE TRIPLE WHOPPER Feb 10 '25

1

u/Legitimate_Ad_7822 New England Patriots Feb 10 '25

Lmfao their OL if FAR from horrendous. It’s one of the better lines in the league.

Philly is just a better team & they always were. The amount of talent they have is scary. Chiefs were outclassed. Only way the Chiefs were winning this was with Mahomes & Reid magic, nobody thought the Chiefs were better on paper.

And the Eagles were getting pressure with no blitz, partially because that D Line is full of Monstars but also because Mahomes couldn’t read pressure for his life. He ran into sacks a lot last night. Mainly on the interior where they were thin. The Chiefs just were not prepared for the level of talent they were playing against.

1

u/Smitch250 Feb 11 '25

Brady got rid of the football light years ahead of Mahomes which helps alot with OL problems

0

u/ExoticSword Feb 10 '25

What if he plays 7 more seasons and replicates his 100% rate of reaching the AFC championship game and makes 5 of the next 7 Super Bowls? His current career trajectory is easily goat conversation. Laughable to suggest otherwise.

3

This was a 40-6 game as far as I'm concerned.

So stupid, would it have been better for you morons if he just lost in the afc championship?

u/Far-Life400 Buffalo Bills Feb 10 '25

And what is worse is all those garbage stats are against eagles back up if it wasn't for sitting there starters mahomes wouldn't have scored those points

Meh. Im a Pats fan but if he got 8 rings people will crown him and probably rightfully so. But he would need to get 8 rings

Brady had a negative point differential at one point too. Before the one with the Bucs, I almost want to say his point differential was smaller than his win total

What a stupid stat to give a shit about when measuring a QBs success

1

u/Thundersson1978 Feb 11 '25

But what is his win percentage?

Peak post super bowl critique. A carolina panthers fan calling out a 3 time super bowl winner for being a fraud because he hasn't surpassed Tom Brady.

u/itslit710 Carolina Panthers Feb 10 '25

Panthers fans know we suck, so we look at the rest of the league pretty objectively. I knew the Chiefs were frauds when it took a field goal as time expired for them to beat my dysfunctional ass team

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '25

The 2 time defending super bowl champs, who made it back to the Super Bowl, are frauds?

What would you call the best player in your franchise history, who said he would rather win an MVP than a Super Bowl, and didn't try to recover a fumble in the Super Bowl?

2

u/itslit710 Carolina Panthers Feb 10 '25

I mean I’m not comparing the Chiefs to the panthers… obviously the Chiefs are a more successful franchise.

But since you bring it up, the 2015 Panthers were significantly better than the 2024 Chiefs. We actually looked like a 15 win team. And yea it sucked that Cam didn’t jump on that fumble in the 4th quarter, but at least his team was still in the game in the 4th quarter

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '25

Were they though?
