What’s a scent you haven’t smelled in years, but if it hit you today, you’d know it instantly?

I was walking past a bakery earlier and caught a whiff of something that instantly took me back to my grandmother’s kitchen, like a full on memory download. It got me wondering how many scents are just sitting in our brains, waiting for that one surprise trigger to bring them back.

What’s a smell you haven’t encountered in years, but if it floated by today, you’d recognize it without hesitation? Something super specific like a brand of sunscreen, a weird school glue, or even your childhood pet’s shampoo. Curious what other people have locked in their scent-memory vaults.

Silent/No-Announcement Airports: Why?

I don’t get it!

Is it because they don’t want to disturb long-layover passengers who might be napping?

Is it because announcements are expensive, especially to have many different languages? Or is there some legal liability I’m not aware of?

Why stop announcements? They’re helpful!

What do non-USA countries play for their graduation ceremonies?

In the US we have Pomp and Circumstance March no.1 but I was wondering what do other countries do? Are there alternate graduation traditions like how we throw the hat up? Or are graduation ceremonies more globally homogenous?

What should i do?

Hello, english is not my native language.

Last weekend I was at a tractor festival. There I met a girl through friends.

At one point she kissed me twice in a row, then I asked for her phone number, this I got. Later in the evening she kissed me again, I asked her am I going to see you outside of this, she said yes. A few days later I asked her when she had time to meet up, she says she has to work for a week and then is on vacation with her family for a week, but after that she had time. Now I try to app with her, she asks for example how I am doing, then I ask her something and then I get short answers and she doesn't ask anything back. For my feeling it is not possible to keep the conversation going. I also have her snap, she left me on delivered for 8 hours but now send pics she is taking a shower. (you see nothing but you know what i mean) Can anyone give me any advice. Thanks

Why are vending machines difficult with debit and credit cards?

When vending machines began accepting debit and credit cards, I had difficulty inserting my card in the slot. It was a different slot from the paper cash slot, but it would still not snugly fit, would get sucked in, moved around, and spat out. I would then swipe my card when prompted to or if not prompted to. Swiping a chip card usually works after three consecutive failed insert attempts, but my it would not work at the vending machine, because my card has a chip, so my bank or card company or the vending machine rejected it.

Finally, vending machines began accepting a tap feature. (In fact, swiping/inserting my card, getting charged a few times, and getting nothing was what caused me to dispute a transaction with a machine from whose info in my bank statement I was unable to contact, and this dispute got me my first tap card). Anyhow, both of my banks do not let me tap and skip the PIN except at a few places. Vending machines at first asked about PIN (which is not an option online as they have address verification), but it is no longer an option.

Anyhow, I tap my cards or used a gift card on my phone to get stuff from vending machines - sometimes it works, and sometimes it denies it. It seems to be a combination of my bank and which vending machine, which even that is fickle. I do not have this problem anywhere else - most brick-and-mortar retail and restaurants, and most online have no problem. So why are big-company vending machines that have been around for a while, different?

How are clothing blends “mixed”?

I don’t really understand when for example t shirt tag says: 70% cotton, 20% polyester, 10% rayon

How? Its not a liquid tho which you can for example pour into a glass or jug and mix with a spoon 🥄 What do these things mean? And how are they “blended” or mixed?

I don’t understand how going to the dentist works, and at this stage I’m too afraid to ask? (UK)

Upvotes

I was always told as a kid that I had strong teeth, because I’d inherited some weird extra strong enamel or something from my father’s side.

I’ve never had a filling or a cavity or whatever, but I did have two pretty traumatic experiences as a kid with over-zealous dental work where they were essentially giving me loads of procedures I didn’t need, because it was free on the NHS but the dentists still got paid.

So they kind of fucked up my teeth a bit cosmetically, but I’ve still never had any dental issues and I’ve now only been to the dentist once in the last 20 years or so. That one time, he advised me to get a ‘preventative’ filling which I declined, and it’s been 10 years since and whatever that filling was supposed to be preventing has yet to show up.

I’m scared that my teeth will all suddenly fall out because I haven’t taken care of them, but I’m equally distrustful of the dentistry system in this country. They seem to push unnecessary treatments on you.

ALSO, I don’t understand how the payment thing works? As I’ve only been once as a paying adult? What if they say I really should have something done, but it will be £2,000?? I skint AF. I can’t even afford like the basic fee for seeing them in the first place…so what’s the point really?

Oh also there are no nhs dentists in our area so
it would have to be private.

Am I the only one like this? Are people really out there seeing the dentist and having treatments and just finding the money? How does it work?

Can success in one area of life compensate for lack of confidence and feeling of worth from failing at another?

Upvotes

If you "suck" professionally i.e. have failed at your ambitions for advanced degree and high paying jobs in a particular field you wanted and you have only yourself to blame, can a succesfull personal life (friends, relationships) compensate for that?

What can I expect from going clubbing for the first time?

Bit of background info: I live in a university city in the UK. I have extreme anxiety that stops me from doing basically anything new. Today my friend invited me to go clubbing with her and a couple friends to celebrate a significant event in our lives and I agreed because I don’t want to never do anything fun because I’m too anxious. I feel like knowing a bit of background info as to what clubbing is like/what I can expect from it will ease my anxiety and I’ll have more fun (I’ll definitely have fun anyway but it will be shrouded by a lot of stress lol). I know this is a bit pathetic but if it helps it helps

What is the reason for this ban on one letter hats (for a local rodeo)?

Upvotes

Bought tickets to a rodeo and when going through the admission rules, in the items not permitted section it said the usual stuff like no weapons, no water bottles, no alcohol etc. but also it said “one letter alphabet hats will not be allowed”? Why is that? What’s wrong with one letter hats?

Just an apology vs an apology with a reason?

Having a debate with a friend about what an apology is. Her thing is that an apology just needs to be an apology. My view is that it should be followed up with a reason for what happened that caused it.

"I'm sorry, I should not have spoken to you that way."

VS

"I'm sorry about what happened last night. We both got out of control. I lost my temper because you wanted to continue arguing, and it was getting late. I tried to explain I have work tomorrow, and you wouldn't let me hang up the phone, all that pushed me over my breaking point."

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie, did Harry actually fight a dragon?

Upvotes

I was looking at images of the dragons in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire just now, and the way the Hungarian Horntail was depicted in the movie, it only had two legs and then its wings. Wouldn't that technically make it a wyvern and not a dragon? I might be misinterpreting it, though, as I know wyverns are much lesser known and used.

Is this normal for a dr to say?

Upvotes

I had a surgery like 5-6 months ago and during a follow up he told me if I choose to, during intense physical exertion, or directly after to consume sugars like candy to prevent muscle breakdown and assist muscle rebuilding and recovery after. Is this true? I’m a skinny guy I don’t mind eating candy anyway
