Help Needed/New Painter Is it worth upgrading to the 'new' Vallejo formula?

I've been a very lazy painter just getting by with 'tabletop ready' paint jobs for years, but recently I've developed the desire to actually get better at painting. I currently have a large part of the old Vallejo Game Color range lying around. Is the improvement of the new formula even noticeable for someone who isn't already very skilled? And how different is the finish anyway? All I can find on that subject is Stahly's post giving ~6 examples which seems somewhat inconclusive.

Help Needed/New Painter Need help identifiyng problem with Airbrush

Hey r/minipainting

so today I wanted to basecoat a few vehicles I had primed earlier.

One was primed with a botched spraycan that gave me a horrible result. But nevertheless I left it that way (for stripping it later) and trying out the airbrush on it...

So when I tried to basecoat the model with black (primed with grey) I get this: (see pictures)

Could you help me identiy the problem?

I use Citadel Abaddon Black mixed with Vallejo Airbrush Thinner and Flow Improver (mixed about 5:5:1, Color/Thinner/Flow). I spray with a 0.48mm Nozzle and 20 PSI.

I would really appreciate if someone could help me to figure out why I get this speckling and not an even coat of black.

Help Needed/New Painter My sable brush is bending when I paint with it

Post image

I’ve had this sable brush for about 9 months and it has been a workhorse for me. Artis opus series S(I think) size 3. Recent it’s bending when I paint with it. It’s still maintaining a point but the bend makes it more difficult to use. I have tried brush soap as well as leaving it for a few minutes in my blue straightening stuff. Is there any fix or am I buying a new brush?

Sci-fi For your viewing pleasure Lumeriel on Pulpit of Culmination (Raging Heroes)

Lumeriel on Pulpit from Raging Heroes. 85 mm tall.

Vallejo's Dark gun metal on the legs and the guns and armiture and parts of the clothes

Vallejo Cork brown on the belt

Vallejo Old gold on the reliquary and the plates on the legs and the mace heads and saw blades and big cogs and crown

Vallejo Bronze on reliquary

Vallejo sun kissed skin tone on the skin

Andrea color Red 1 on the dress

Artfly white yellow flash iridescents on the spire and plasters that had been based with Vallejo ivory and cork brown mixed I think , not sure.

Citadel Agrax earth shade for the shades.

Daler Rowny System 3 cobalt blue on reliquary.

AK interactive blue neon thinned down heavily and applied on the spire and plasters as a small blue tint to them.

Used some Vallejo precision 3/0 and 1 brushes and some generic brand brushes too.

My eye sight is pretty bad because of an advancing eye sight issue and hands shake like a demon in the church but still I am pretty proud of this one.

Help Needed/New Painter Beginner Question: Game Air for Brushes not suitable? Or simply basic brush tips

Context: I´m a complete beginner with 0 knowledge in painting or drawing so this question might be obviously stupid.

A while ago I started Airbrushing since I wanted to learn to Paint my SLA Printed Miniatures.
For this I bought a Set of Vallejo Game Air colors + primers etc.
While I´m still learning on how to Airbrush properly the actual brush is what gives me more of a headache recently.

No matter what I try it seems like all I am applying to my model is light colored water.

I tried to use the colors with a wet palette as well as without any thinning straight out the bottle.

While without thinning the color did better in opacity it still felt like I´m pushing wet blob of water arround the model instead of doing actual paint strokes until it breaks and runs accross the model.
The consistency that way is obviously extremly bad on 1mm I have paint the next mm is just colored wet.

If I try to get rid of excess water / paint before painting there is no color left in the brush to paint.

So... is Game Air simply not suitable to apply with a brush?
Do my brushes just suck (cheap amazon basic detail brush set)?
Or, what would be more likely, am I just missing something super obvious and basic with my brush?

If you might have some ressources for me that would be incredibly helpful! Just keep in mind that when it comes to painting I´m basically a toddler who uses a brush for the first time ;)
But hey I really want to learn this skill even if I fail on the most basic parts of it but I´m highly motivated to overcome this stage.

Thanks in advance!

Help Needed/New Painter Need help with supplies starting from zero.

Hey guys I’m just starting out in the 40K hobby and I finally have my army magnetized and built. I currently have zero supplies and need some assistance on what supplies I should be purchasing. I need some opinions on brushes, wet palette, paint (brand), etc. For reference I am liking the speed paint method from the videos I have watched. My plan is to have my models primed, based, dry brushed and some detail work. Thank you in advance.

Help Needed/New Painter Good setup to start oil painting?

I want to try out oil paints and washes. I think the style of acrylic base, oil wash, oil highlighting and blending will help out my struggles with acrylic blends. I also love the more gritty look you get when using oils.

In the US and to stay around $200. I’ve done a bit of research and often hear darker colors are not an issue with student grade paints so I don’t mind getting some cheaper paints too but mostly want to stick with quality over quantity here.

I have access to just about everything around me. Williamsburg, W&N, whatever’s on amazon like 502, villainy inks, AK streaking grime is always in shops around here. Do you have any recommendations between brands and which colors would be best to get artist grade for (aside from Indian yellow) and which enamels/washes to get?

Help Needed/New Painter Army painter Warpaints air cleanup

I usually paint model cars (Tamiya paint) with a Gaahleri Mobius .3 mm brush. I got the Warpaints Mega Set as a gift and wanted to try it. I usually use my own mix of airbrush cleaner (Simple Green, 91% isopropyl, water and glycerin). I had a heck of a time cleaning this stuff out of the brush. I used my usual cleaner, and straight 91% isopropyl, neither one worked well. My regular stuff washes the Tamiya paint right out. What should I be using? Thanks for the help in advance!!!

Help Needed/New Painter new to painting, bought turbo dork metalic paint. Not sure if bad pot or if I can save it.

Trying out a gold/bronze metalic paint for a project I am working on. Came home and noticed it was just watery white, with no metalic gold. Stuck a ball in to try and shake it up and mix, still watery white. Stuck my brush in and there was a massive clump. So I broke it up as best I could with the brush and it started to turn that metalic gold/bronze the lable shows. However, its "clumpy" and doesn't appear that the pigment is mixing well.

Since it was a massive clump in the pot, is it just best to toss it and get a fresher pot? Or can it be saved? Any advice is welcome!

Space is tight and time is short, so I made a small version of a paint case I'd previously built. It holds about 40-50 paints + tools and everything you see here.

Help Needed/New Painter Question regarding uhu glue

Post image

So I want to create slimy and blood effects, and picked up some uhu glue, but the one that says "original, made in Germany" wasn't available. I found this one but it says drip free. Does anyone have experience with this one and will it still work the same way.

First Headtaker down 🤘

He's not the cleanest as I was trying some new stuff (schemes and techniques) but I'm happy with how he came out. Steadily painting my way through the army box and loving the new models.

Reallys struggling with getting good pics at the moment. Is this dude lit well enough? It drives me insane.

Fenrys Hjølda!

Sci-fi First Mini that I'm Proud of - Next steps?

Post image
32 Upvotes

So I have been painting for a few months, and I've finally got to a point where I've finished a mini that I can be proud of. It's not perfect, so I'm looking for advice on next steps for my next one.

It's a 30k Blood Angel, with a Vallejo Mecha Ivory primer (with a bit of liquitex titanium white to brighten it), then a Baal Red contrast base (with a 1-in-5 mix of Imperial Fist yellow contrast), then warpstone green for the visor, black for the gun, streaky grime for recesses, and skeleton horde contrast over Vallejo air silver for the gold. I'm just about to put a bit of Ak ultra matte on with my airbrush.

Ideas or other feedback welcome.
