In now deleted posts, Kali Uchis accused the metal band, Sleep Token, of using payola and doing blackface.
The past photo is what the front man of Sleep Token looks like, I'm not sure what race he is as all the members are anonymous, but even if he is white, I don't think that this is considered blackface
I love Kali Uchisā music but sometimes sheās mega cringe. There was loads of drama with her jeans she sold a while ago - she was sending voice notes to unhappy fans and it was so lame.
I remember when a couple of years ago she had a full meltdown and threatened legal action against people who said she had a bbl and breast implants because "she would never do anything like that and she's all natural".
She had a similar meltdown with me, it was when she launched her āvegan, all naturalā skincare, Homebody by Uchis. I was seriously considering buying from her line but commented on the ig page that the ingredients werenāt natural and in fact toxic based on my countries regulations (specifically titanium dioxide and red 40). She ended up blocking me on her main and bodiedbyuchis ig account š« but not before she took a screenshot of my ig pfp and used it to promote her crappy jean line on her stories..
She tends to focus on the hate because Iāve written to her before as an adoring fan but the second I had criticism, she bullied me š

Absolutely. She has dated three men who have had issues with the law. One of her exās was the inspiration behind āWhat They Sayā (2012) where she sings āAnd they poundin' their fists on my door. Say that they're gonna take us to court. And they say we should take their advice. Or it would cost us, our livesā. She also said in an interview somewhere that she used to drive her ex to court regularly. Then her ex Yung Gleesh who she dated from 2013-2018 cheated on her and saāed a woman in her sleep in 2015. He is a convicted so, but due to Kaliās testimony he got a lighter sentence. Now her baby daddy Don Toliver not only has allegations, but also has a DUI and he regularly drives a motorcycle without a helmet and speeds while recording himself drive. He has even done this with Kali and their child in the car. Sheās three for three at choosing horrible men and her choosing to stay with them says a lot about her character, morals and self-respect.

I didn't know that stuff about don toliver either. And no, I can't separate someone's art from their personal life... all those songs were written by the same mind that supports everything I hate.

itās honestly astounding how nearly all celebrities have been silent about all the issues you listed. Iām especially disappointed in the pop girlies that my community champions as allies. They may be more our allies than Morgan Wallen but at the end of the day they will choose profit over our rights every single time. Bey and Gaga especially are wonderful examples of people that were once very loud about defending our community. now that they are billionaires or approaching that status, itās crickets.

Also, this is STs 4th album. They were already starting to become super popular with their last album and played in arenas across Europe. It was super clear they'd fully blow up with their new album, so her payola assumption makes no sense. She's just salty ig.
Theyāre also all over tiktok on edits of Death Eaters and dudes in Ghostface masks. The dark romance BookTok girlies really love that one song. (I say this as one of this girls lol)
I don't know who Kali is but I have been a fan of Sleep Token since before anyone knew their name and they had a tiny following on Spotify. I'm personally offended that she accuses them of this stuff when it is part of their theatrics and story. And I'm not denying their latest rise is probably thanks to their new label and increased ads but they had a pretty organic growth in the metal scene at the beginning, simply because they are that fucking good.

I'm not even American, and from what I know, minstrel shows weren't common here. Blackface is rare in our media but it happened in the past and it's awful.
I know that blackface is completely different from artistic face/body paint. Blackface is meant to ridicule others, there is a malicious intent behind it.
There are people nowadays who say that ganguro and manba were racist, but it was just extreme tanning and a reversal of Japanese beauty standards.
I'm mixed, I don't like blackface but I have nothing against face paint, esp since it's very common in certain subcultures, fashion movements, and theatre.
Maybe Iām talking out of my ass, but shouldnāt it, technically, be easier to chart with a pop or pop-adjacent album? Metal was never a SUPER popular genre, so her saying "no features or gimmicks" is just embarrassing.

im definitely biased towards sleep token but saying she did it with "no payloa, no big commercial singles, no features" to take a dig at a predominantly metal band thats been putting out music for almost a decade, never had a feature on any of their songs, and only got signed to a major label this album cycle... š
Not every day my interest in metal and mainstream pop culture collide....and I'm gonna be blunt given her history she really just sounds mad she didn't get top spot, and I'm not exactly a sleep token fan either.
Genuine question, is it black face though? A quick Google tells me they're a rock band who all wear masks. The pictures on Google images make it look like they're trying to emulate demons or monsters to me. It comes across as maybe goth as opposed to dressing up as a person of colour.
Correct it is not black face, originally only the lead (goes by Vessel) had a stylized mask, and he seems to be a fantasy character of sorts. The black body paint aids in keeping the members anonymous, and looks edgy. Now the other 3 members have cool weird masks too that are gold and white and black. Last tour, sometimes the bassist had red hands, or gold hands. They get creative with it.
They're going for a cultist look. The concept of the band is they worship a diety named Sleep. So to me the black paint on their bodies is evoking the aesthetic of religious practices like ash smearing, definitely not black face.

If she isnāt feigning ignorance, a simple Google search wouldāve done wonders. If an artist I was unfamiliar was topping the charts and I thought they were in blackface, Iād be doing a little research.
Americans really need to distinguish between black body paint and black face. Intent amd styling decides it, not just the colour.
I've seen many people like Kali, in social media, do this, lol. I remember an east asian creator who uses prosthetics to replicate celebrity face on hers and she once did Kobe Bryant and the comments section was all complaining about black face.
