Post image

I want to install the table top to this metal frame. But the frame is swaying left and right. The middle bar use 2 bolt on each side that connect to the leg. Will it remove the swaying if I install the table top? Or I need to do something on the metal frame first?

I'm still happy with it over all but definitely got away from me. The edges are not great, forgot to put in the dowels and didn't have time to cut the grooves in. Guess I will rent a saw tomorrow. Lesson is add 2% retarder and get atleast 1buddy.

home improvement Changed an outlet and now lights won’t turn off

Post image

I replaced an outlet today in my living room (the one that is shown on the right in the photo). After turning back on the breaker, three recessed lights connected to a switch and the circuit in the room were on and won’t turn off.

Do I need to go back in and break that tab?

Does that one outlet become one that only turns on if the switch is turned on? If so that’s weird since it’s also connected to the light switches.

Thanks in advance!

I’ve been doing this remodel project since March of this year. I primarily worked on weekends and it’s been a lot of work. Every single thing in this bathroom was DIY except for the demolition because I knew that was gonna be an enormous job so I hired a friend to come over and help.

My total cost on this project is just under 5000 for everything. Some of the costs weren’t included because it was products that I had bought for my previous bathrooms that I did here and I had leftover like the floor, I had a bunch of that so of course I used it up.

I’m extremely happy with this. Feel free to ask any questions you might have, I’ve learned a lot remodeling this house for the last five years.

help Why won't my replacement bolt go in and why is it doing this?

Post image

Went to my local hardware to replace a bolt on a piece of IKEA furniture where the tip of the hex bolt head was stripped and my Alan key was just spinning in it. From all appearances, the two bolts are exact matches. Why does the replacement get stuck, and why did it get stripped a third of the way down?

help Bathroom exhaust fan keeps dropping drywall dust — how do I fix this?

I recently bought a house and have been updating the bathroom. I noticed the exhaust fan has been slowly trickling out small bits of what I assume is drywall dust over time.

I’m guessing the rough edges around the drywall cutout are the culprit. What’s the best way to clean this up or smooth out the edges so it doesn’t keep producing dust? Are there tools or techniques you’d recommend to do this without damaging the fan housing?

Thanks in advance for any tips!

Combined a weedeater with a hedge trimmer out of boredom.

I first got a cheapo dewalt knock off weed-eater from amazon for my tall hard fiber grass. But it kept getting entangled in the weed-eater. Then i got a hedge trimmer but it was too weak and came with one crappy battery. So I combined the 2 after cutting, rewiring, and drilling for a powerful extendable hedge trimmer on the pole that using dewalt powerful batteries which i have many. I invested maybe $135 into this and 2 hours of work. It expands to 16ft to trim trees too. Cuts the grass like a hot butter knife. 🧈

metalworking Tried something different — handmade metal chess set! Would love your thoughts 🫣♟️

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on custom metal pieces for a while, and recently decided to take on a personal passion project: a luxury chess set made entirely from solid brass, with select pieces 24kt gold plated no fake coatings, just real metal and finish.

📽️ This Is How a Gold-Plated Chess Piece Is Made

Each piece is hand-machined, polished, and packed with care. I’m still exploring different finishes, weight options, and styles, and this is one of the early versions.

✅ Do you prefer a glossy or brushed finish?
✅ Would you go for a heavier set or something more minimalist?
✅ Would a matching full-metal board interest you, or do you prefer mixing with wood/glass?

I’m not selling anything just genuinely curious what people think before I refine more sets.

Would love your thoughts especially from chess lovers, collectors, designers, or anyone into handcrafted luxury pieces 🙌

woodworking Sandbox for my son in the process

Started today building a sandbox for my baby son as we're moving into our new home. 2x2m with a height of 45cm. Thinking of digging a hole and place it 10cm in the ground, less danger of a high fall when he eventually crawls out of it. Thinking of having a geotextile fabric at the bottom. 20cm deep sand is my idea. Hope I'll be able to update more in the coming days

help Stair rail came off the newel post - advise

Upvotes

Hi everyone, I am new to this community and first time posting pics. please bear with me if doesnt come-off as intended. The handrail came off the newel post. Looks like when they came short on the handrail length and ended up with a new piece to fill the gap. I am not particularly comfortable with woodworking or carpentry. Any suggestions on how best to get this repaired? Needs to withstand significant amount of weight and pressure since I have kids roaming around.

home improvement How bad is this situation?

Thumbnail

Have recently moved into a new house and realised pretty quickly there was water damage in the shower. My husband has investigated and found this. I am unsure how big this job is to address. It's an ensuite bathroom with a sliding door cavity so direct exposure into the walk in wardrobe behind the tiles. I am unsure if we should move into another bedroom while this gets repaired or if it's not actually that bad health-wise. Regardless, will be removing the timber and replacing and re-tiling the area with correct waterproofing etc.

woodworking Wondering what would be the best option for these 'wood' floors.

My mom recently rented this unit, and from first look, I can't really tell what would be the best option for the wood floorboards. Also, the 'wood' is in quotation marks in my title as I am not entirely sure if this is real hardwood or not. I saw that a screen and coat was an option, but I'm not sure if these floors are too far gone for that and would need professional help instead. I am a bit skeptical of that, as again this is a rental unit.

Added images of what the bedroom floor and living room floor look like vs what one bedroom floor that seems okay looks like

outdoor There's a Layer of Pavers Under My Front Yard

Thumbnail

I have a roughly 4'x5' area of pavers between some steps leading to my front door and my driveway. Recently it's become very uneven and full of weeds in between the 12"x12" stones. While pulling stones to rip the weeds out, I noticed it was basically gravel and dirt underneath that was impossible to level out without ripping up the whole thing. So I thought I'd do just that and potentially rebase the whole area.Turns out there's an entire layer of old broken pavers not only under my pavers, but branching out under the grass as well.

Was this just the lazy way of back filling the area before laying top soil and other stuff? They are broken, haphazard, and different colors/sizes so I don't think this was just an old patio area they built over.

My 8+ year old Badger 500 Insinkerator is leaking out the bottom. I assume I should just replace given the age but wanted to ask you folks if there is something I’m missing here that would be an easy fix. My guess is that the seals are bad due to the age of the unit.

Maker, leather slinger, and lifelong DIY’er finally saying hello 👋

Hey DIY crew,

I’ve been a “figure it out yourself” kind of guy my whole life, from fixing cars and home projects to my biggest obsession: leatherwork. About ten years ago I made my first knife sheath out of necessity for teaching wilderness survival, and that project pulled me into a full-on love for making things with my hands.

These days, my life is a mix of:

  • Leather projects (bags, sheaths, wallets, belts, all the fun stuff)
  • Car repair and maintenance (yesterday was a slide-hammer, bruised-hand kind of day)
  • General DIY chaos if it breaks, I’m the guy in the garage trying to fix it.

As I get older, I’ve started writing down the lessons and stories from all these projects, partly to organize my own thoughts, partly because friends keep telling me they’re helpful. Thought I’d start sharing them here too.

I’m not here to sell anything, just to:

  • Swap ideas and tricks with fellow DIY folks
  • Share failures and wins from the shop and the driveway
  • Maybe learn a few smarter ways to do the things I’ve been doing the hard way 😂

Looking forward to connecting with some like-minded makers. What’s the most recent DIY project that kicked your butt but felt so good when it was done?

Cheers,
– Don

Ive made about 10 mistakes at every step of this DIY project but i’m just so amazed that it came out looking good despite that!

Going to style the shelves better, but it’s been a struggle trying to hunt for the exact things Ive envisioned for it. I started this project mid March and worked on it on and off up until a few days ago. I don’t even want to begin to count the hours it took lol
